Welcome to North East Scotland College
To create one college from two is no easy task and a lot of work has been going on
behind the scenes, but what does all this mean to you?
Since the merger of Aberdeen College and Banff &
Buchan College on 1st November 2013, the newly
formed North East Scotland College has entered into
an exciting new phase.
In this, our first combined prospectus, we offer you a wealth of courses across Aberdeen
and Aberdeenshire. You can now study in the city or close to home in Ellon, Inverurie,
Fraserburgh or Macduff – the choice is yours.
About to leave school?
For those who are leaving school and making big decisions about their future, we’re
here to help. Our wide range of courses and subjects mean there’s a lot of choice, and
we welcome any enquiry you might have before applying.
Returning to education?
If it’s been a while since you studied – whether at school, college or university level –
we have a range of courses available from full-time and part-time learning to flexible,
self-study courses. Whilst at College you’ll meet many other students who are also
returning to learning, so whatever your age and background this is a great chance to
continue your education!
Currently employed?
We offer a comprehensive range of courses which are designed to meet the current
and emerging needs of people who are currently in work.
Employers and Businesses
Our business and vocational training services are specially designed to help you
develop your workforce.
And that’s not all....
The personal touch
We have friendly and helpful teams of tutors and Student Services staff who are on
hand to help you get the most from your College experience. Our class sizes are small
and support and guidance is on hand should you require advice or someone to chat
through any concerns.
Cutting edge facilities
We pride ourselves in having the most up-to-date facilities available for you – with IT
Centres and Library+ in all campuses, fitness suites, common rooms and cafés, coupled
with specialist training facilities including: Engineering, a Welding Technology Centre,
TV, Radio & Recording Studios, Hair & Beauty Salons, Training Restaurants and Kitchens,
a Studio Theatre and Music Practice Rooms, fantastic Computer Hardware Labs and
much, much more.
Courses for everyone
It doesn’t matter what qualifications you leave school with – there are levels to suit
everyone and opportunities to progress from introductory level courses to Higher
National Certificates and Diplomas. You simply enter at the level which suits your ability
and experience.
A brighter future
Whatever your future goals are, we can help. If you plan to continue with your studies,
we have agreements in place with 11 universities and, as a result, all of our HND courses
have articulation routes to a degree, allowing you to make a smooth transition from
the College to university.
However, we understand that not everyone wants to go on to university and so we
offer many vocational qualifications for a wide range of occupations including Care,
Catering, Engineering, Hairdressing, and Automotive. Some courses can be studied at
your workplace, others at the College or by a mix of College attendance and workplace
training.
We also offer work experience in many of our courses. As such, we have close working
relationships with the local business community and strong partnerships with national
and international businesses who could well be your future employer!

We’re with you all the way
Our dedicated team of enthusiastic and approachable staff are here to offer support and guidance
on a range of aspects relating to student life.
Pre-entry Guidance
For pre-entry and application guidance and advice, the Information & Booking Centre at our Aberdeen City Campus and our Admissions
Office at our Fraserburgh Campus are both staffed by highly trained professionals with years of experience in working with students and
helping them though the application process.
Money Matters
Money is a very important consideration when coming to College. You can organise an appointment with one of our Student Advisers before you book on to a course – this
means you’ll get a better idea of how affordable coming to College is given your financial circumstances.
Childcare
We understand that coming to College can be difficult for parents, especially when it comes to securing suitable childcare. Our Student Advisers can help you find out more
about the funding available, making the combination of family life and study easier for you.
Fraserburgh Campus has its very own nursery on campus, providing you with the option of studying whilst your child is close at hand. The popular Busy B’s Nursery can cater
for children between the ages of six months up to five years and is open five days a week from 08.45 to 16.15 during term-time.
Applying for a course
For most courses a ‘first come, first served’ approach is adopted in offering places to those with the necessary entry requirements, so apply for your course early to increase
your chances of securing a place! For some courses, there is a formal selection process to identify the people most suited to the course, and to place them at the right level
of study.
The application process normally takes six to eight weeks (although at peak times it can take longer). After that you will be notified by post as to whether or not your application
was successful. If you are offered a place it’s important to accept your offer – your offer letter will tell you how to do this.
Some courses are in very high demand, so you may not be offered a place on your first choice of course. In the unfortunate circumstance that we are unable to offer you a
place, you will be put on a waiting list and we’ll keep in touch. There are always people who change their mind and places can become available throughout the summer, even
on high demand courses.
For all enquiries, your first point of contact should be our Information & Booking Centre. Call 0300 330 5550 or email [email protected] to discuss your options, or to
arrange an appointment with one of our advisors.
12
Guidance Tutor
You will have a designated Guidance Tutor who will act as your key point of
contact for all matters relating to your course, progress and attendance, as well
as any personal matters you may want to discuss. Our Guidance Tutors work
closely with the lecturing teams and will support you with various issues that may
affect your learning whilst at College.
Learning Support
North East Scotland College is an inclusive and diverse college, and our Learning Development Centre is in place
to offer learning support and advice to all students studying in Aberdeen. For students studying in Fraserburgh,
Macduff or Ellon, pop into the Student Services workroom at the Fraserburgh Campus where staff are available
to help.
Careers & Employability
Not sure what you want to do after you leave College, or the opportunities that your choice of course could
lead to? Our Careers & Employability Team is on hand to help with any enquiries and each of our enthusiastic,
knowledgeable advisors will gladly aid you in pursuing your professional ambitions – whatever they may be!

Full-time study next year, so if you feel that Full-time College study
isn’t quite right for you at the moment, then investigate our Part-time
opportunities further by visiting the website:

Exceptional Entry
Exceptional Entry is the name given to routes to Further Education for
those whose date of birth requires them to remain in school until the
winter break.
These course options mean that you can study for your school
qualifications whilst also working towards a qualification here at
College, where the courses are designed specifically to provide you
with key skills needed for employment, or for moving on to Further or
Higher Education.
If your 16th birthday falls between 1 October 2015 and 29 February
2016, you would be eligible to start certain Full-time, Non-advanced
courses at North East Scotland College from August, even though you
are still officially a school pupil.
Between August and the winter break in December, your school would
be regularly informed of your attendance and progress, but to all
intents and purposes you would be a Full-time student at North East
Scotland College. If during that period you decide that College isn’t
quite right for you, you still have the option of returning to school at
any time.
If you are interested and want to find out more, speak to your Guidance Teacher at school or email us at:
[email protected] for more information.
Please note that your school will be asked to provide consent for your application to be considered.

The North East Scotland College Students’ Association is run by
students, for the benefit of students. We strive to make sure that your
experience at College is the best it can be; from the fun, social side of
things to the more serious, educational side where we’ll represent you
at all levels – from running Class Rep meetings to lobbying MPs. We also

links between you and the College.
So for those who want to have an active say in their education and
really embrace the student experience at College, the Students’
Association is a great thing to get involved in!
We have countless student-led groups and campaigns for you to join,
and you’ll find that throughout the year we organise a jam-packed

gain work experience and boost your CV all whilst spending time with
enthusiastic, like-minded people and forming lifelong friendships!
When you choose to study at North East Scotland College you will

Higher National CertiFIcates (HNCs)
HNC qualifications are a higher level than National Qualifications.
Subjects are studied in greater depth and units are usually around 40
hours in duration. An HNC is achieved on successful completion of 12
credits.
National QualIFIcations
National Qualifications are Non-advanced
qualifications (i.e. not HNC/HND) which include
National Units, National Courses (e.g. Highers &
Intermediate 1 & 2), National Certificate Group
Awards, National Clusters and College-devised
groupings of subject-related units.
This type of study can often include job-related training and on
successful completion you may leave to gain employment or continue
your education at a more advanced level using your National
Qualification as a stepping stone.
Vocationally related QualIFications (VRQs)
Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs) are widely recognised
professional qualifications, enabling learners to improve their
knowledge, skills and understanding of specific areas of employment,
normally through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments.
VRQs are usually assessed using assignments, practical tasks, exams or
online tests allowing learners to progress through Levels 1-3.
Scottish Vocational QualIFications (SVQs)
SVQs were introduced to improve the skills of the nation’s workforce.
Available for a wide range of occupations, SVQs are offered at Levels
1-5. They provide an excellent route for those wishing to enhance
career development. SVQs are designed primarily for the workplace but
can be studied at College (where simulated workplace environments
have been established) or through a mix of College attendance and
workplace training.
The College offers a wide range of HNC courses on a Full-time basis. It
will take between 18 weeks and one year of Full-time study to achieve
the award. You can also study on a part-time basis (Part-time day
study, evening classes or a combination of the two). Part-time students
normally take two to three years to achieve an HNC, although Fast Track
courses may allow you to complete it in one year.
Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)
HND courses offer a more in-depth range of study than HNC. An HND is
awarded on successful completion of 30 credits and usually takes up to
two years to compete on a Full-time basis. Some HND courses are also
available on a part-time basis.
Fast-Track Options
Fast-Track courses make it possible to achieve an HNC within one year
through a combination of study, e.g. one day per week, one to two
evenings and part of the weekend. Fast-Track HNC programmes are
particularly well-suited to people who want to combine study with a
career. If you are interested in the Fast-Track route, please check with
the relevant school/study area regarding availability.
Professional Development Awards (PDAs)
North East Scotland College offers PDAs at Certificate, Advanced
Certificate and Diploma level. Certificates may be made up of
Higher National Units, National Units, Workplace Assessed Units or a
combination of any of these. Advanced Certificates and Diplomas are
composed of Higher National Units.
Please note that Certificates and Diplomas awarded by the Scottish
Qualifications Authority (SQA) are continuously assessed throughout
the duration of the course. Assessment may take the form of written or
practical project work, according to the nature of the course.
19
The Scottish Credit and QualiFications Framework (SCQF)
The Scottish Credit and QualiFIcations Framework (SCQF) is Scotland’s lifelong learning framework
The SCQF contains the qualification
frameworks of the Scottish Qualifications
Authority (SQA) and Scottish Higher
Education (HE). The SCQF aims to:
1. Help people of all ages and
circumstances to access appropriate
education and training over their
lifetime to fulfil their personal,
social and economic potential;
2.Enable employers, learners and the
public in general to understand the
full range of Scottish qualifications,
how they relate to each other and
how different types of qualifications
can contribute to improving the
skills of the workforce.
The SCQF is managed by the Scottish
Credit and Qualifications framework
Partnership whose members include
Scottish Government, higher education
and college sectors, employers and the
SQA. Although it is not a regulatory body,
the SCQF Partnership maintains the
quality and use of the Framework as a
whole.
20
The SCQF diagram portrays the frame–
works of HE, SQA and Scottish Vocational
Qualifications (SVQs). However, the
framework also currently contains
over 400 qualifications and learning
programmes such as non-formal learning
offered in the community or by employers,
professional bodies, vendors such as
Microsoft and those offered by awarding
bodies other than the SQA.
The SCQF uses two measures to recognise
learning: Level and Credit.
Level provides an indication of the level
of difficulty associated with a qualification
or learning programme. This is based on
one set of SCQF Level Descriptors which
are developmental from SCQF Level 1 to 12.
The Level Descriptors are used by SCQF
Credit Rating Bodies to determine the
level of learning irrespective of whether
the qualification or learning programme is
academic, vocational or non-formal.
The SCQF Level is an important feature
for learning provision. It has been creditrated in order to indicate the complexity
level of the learning and to clarify how
qualifications and learning programmes
relate to each other. It also provides clarity
for both articulation and progression.
Two qualifications or learning programmes
at the same level on the SCQF indicates
that they are comparable in terms of
difficulty. For example, provision credit
rated at SCQF Level 7 indicates that it is
more demanding than learning at SCQF
Level 6.
The number of SCQF Credit Points
allocated to a qualification of learning
programme indicates the typical amount
of time that it would take a learner to
achieve the learning outcomes of the
qualification or learning programme. Ten
notional learning hours equates to one
SCQF Credit Point.

HND ANIMAL CARE - NATALIE LAWRENCE (18)
Natalie has always been interested in animals and upon leaving Hazlehead Academy aged 16, she enrolled
on the Introduction to Animal Care course at North East Scotland College. From there she continued onto
the National Certificate in Animal Care and has now progressed to the HND Animal Care which she is
studying at present.
Natalie said, “I’ve always loved animals and decided that if I wanted to work in animal care, that the best
way to go about it would be to get a related qualification. Leaving school after fourth year wasn’t a problem
as I was able to start on the introductory course and progress through the different course levels that the
College has available. I have now finished the first year of my HND and I’m really enjoying the second.”
PROFILE
The College’s animal courses are delivered from a custom built Animal Care Centre at the Scottish Rural
College (SRUC Aberdeen) on the Craibstone estate, which is situated on the outskirts on the city. The
College’s specialist animal care unit is home to an array of different creatures including mice, rats, gerbils,
hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, chickens, rabbits, frogs, reptiles including snakes, lizards and three ponies - as
well as an aviary!
Talking about her time at College, Natalie said, “I have really enjoyed my last few years and have found it
very interesting. The courses have been a good combination of practical and theory work and I feel I have
learned so much. The lecturers are all lovely and very approachable if there is anything you are unsure of
or need extra help.”
Natalie hopes to volunteer in a veterinary practice over the next year to get some work experience. Her aim
is to complete her HND and find a job where she can then study part-time to achieve a veterinary nursing
qualification.

HND TEXTILES (YEAR 1) - JASMIN RAMIREZ (19)
Jasmin Ramirez has always wanted to be a fashion designer, but when she was deciding what to do
after leaving Harlaw Academy, university was not something Jasmin felt ready for. Keen to gain more
experience studying, she applied to study Textiles at North East Scotland College.
“I was planning on doing the HNC course but at my interview they advised me that I would be capable
of the HND,” she explained. And Jasmin is sure that college was the right move for her, having gained
a huge range of knowledge and experience during her time here.
PROFILE
She said, “I want to be a fashion designer, but I love studying textiles. It’s more unique and creative and
more hands on than design. I’ve enjoyed everything about the course – especially making the dresses
and the samples. It’s all new to me, but in a good way. I like to be creative and that’s a real advantage
doing this kind of course. I’ve learned so many new techniques and a lot about how to approach the
making of a textile.”
Jasmin is staying at NESCol to complete her second year of the HND and she is looking forward to
everything the course still has to offer – especially the annual trip that the year two students take to
learn about new textile techniques and materials. Jasmin is currently looking for work experience in
the fashion industry and after completing her HND she plans to move on to university where she can
focus on her goal of becoming a fashion designer.
She said, “After College I want to go to uni to study fashion further. It will be a totally different level but
I feel so much more prepared now. The lecturers at College have been so helpful. They really push you
to think out of the box. I’m so grateful to the College for everything I’ve learned and for the support
of the staff.”

introduction to construction crafts - lewis martin (16)
After studying the Introduction to Construction Crafts course at NESCol, Lewis Martin has developed
a diverse range of skills, gained a qualification, secured a four year apprenticeship with a plumbing
company and attained the Boys’ Brigade’s highest level award. He says he would recommend the
course to anyone.
PROFILE
“The course is great. It’s informative, insightful and will help you decide what you want to go on and do.
When I left school I knew I wanted to do a trade, but wasn’t sure which one. I applied to do the Intro to
Construction Crafts course because it incorporates all the trades – plumbing, brickwork, joinery and
painting – and I thought it would give me a good outlook and a better insight into what I wanted to do
as a career. There are progression opportunities if you want to continue studying after, but it also gives
you a good grounding for job opportunities too.”
Lewis enjoyed the practical nature of the course, getting hands on experience in all the trade areas
covered. He was even able to use the skills he had gained to contribute towards his achievement of
receiving the Boys Brigade Queen’s Badge.
But it was plumbing that stood out to him as where he wanted to develop a career. He applied for
an apprenticeship with CAS Duncan Plumbing and, after passing a Scottish and Northern Ireland
Plumbing Employers Federation test, he has secured a four year apprenticeship with the firm.
“College prepared me for that. It’s given me a really good grounding of knowledge and skills.” Lewis
said. “It’s a really practical, hands-on course and it’s been great to get an understanding of so many
different things.”

HND Legal Services - Josh Biggs (19)
Josh Biggs is studying HND Legal Services at North East Scotland College. The former Aberdeen Grammar
School pupil applied to the College after narrowly missing out on a place on his chosen course at university.
He said, “I thought that NESCol looked like a great stepping stone for me as it gives lots of opportunities to
progress to university.”
PROFILE
Josh considered a few options before settling on Legal Services. He explained, “I thought the course looked
interesting and, as I am keen to study law at The University of Aberdeen, despite the fact that there’s not a 2 +
2 link for progression from College meaning I would have to apply for entry to year 1 of the LLB, I thought that
the course could be a great starting point.”
Working in the legal profession runs in Josh’s family – his gran was a lawyer so it came as no surprise that he
wants to follow in her footsteps.
When asked about his time at College so far, Josh said, “Coming to College has been a good experience for
me. I would recommend it to anyone who is leaving school and not sure about coping at university, or those
who want the option to progress a step at a time. The lecturers are really helpful if anyone is struggling and my
classmates have all bonded really well.”

NC Health & Social Care - Zoe Frieslick (17)
Seventeen-year-old Zoe Frieslick was a pupil at Peterhead Academy for five years before she left to study NC
Health & Social Care at North East Scotland College’s Fraserburgh Campus. She said, “I’ve always liked helping
people – friends trust me with problems. I’ve helped support a family member when she was unwell and I also
help out with looking after my younger brother. Because of this, I decided to apply to study at College for a year
to see if I was suited to working in a care role.”
PROFILE
Zoe has enjoyed her first year at College and has found the experience quite different to school. She said,
“When I started at the College, there was only one person on my course I already knew so it was a great
opportunity to meet people from a wide variety of backgrounds and get out of the ‘bubble’ of being at school.
My closest friend on the course is nine years older than me and we have bonded because we have found loads
of things we have in common. I’ve also found that you are given more responsibility at college and the tutors
are wonderful – they give lots of support when it is needed.”
On completing the SCQF Level 5 course, Zoe plans to continue her studies at NESCol by moving on to the
Health & Social Care Higher course for a year. She said, “Most of my class are planning to stay on to study
the Higher course and I’m happy that there will be quite a few familiar faces next year. My aim for the future
is to study at RGU to become a mental health nurse so I plan to apply for that after I finish the Higher course.”

ESOL - Anastasija Ivanova (24)
PROFILE
Anastasija Ivanova moved to Aberdeen in October 2012 from her native Lithuania because she had
friends who had already moved to the area and recommended it to her. Despite having a degree in
IT and a teaching qualification, she found it hard to find appropriate employment after her move due
to her English language skills.
Coming to NESCol to study ESOL last year was a big step for Anastasija, which she feels has really
made a difference. She said, “I really needed to improve my English and the course has also helped
me to expand my horizons. I really liked the way the course was taught - there was a great mixture
of formal teaching and group work. I also think that the students in my class have really learned a lot
from each other and I would definitely recommend coming here to study ESOL.”

VRQ Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to the Hair & Beauty Sector (Hair Route) - Bogdan Dragos Bouros (25)
Bogdan Dragos Bouros studied hairdressing in his home country of Romania before he moved to Aberdeen
three years ago. He got a job in the city’s Empire hair salon, but he wanted to learn more. After one of his
colleagues sang the praises of North East Scotland College, Bogdan knew what he wanted to do.
“The UK has much higher standards for hairdressers, so I decided to apply for a hairdressing course here. One
of my colleagues was in her third year at the College and told me so many good things about the course – she
was so excited about what she was learning here, so I decided to apply.”
PROFILE
Bogdan has loved his College experience so far, particularly learning in NESCol’s ‘In:tuition’ salon – a fully
operational hair and beauty salon that is open to members of the public (there is a similar salon in our
Fraserburgh Campus).
He said, “Having the hair salon in the College makes a huge difference – you get the opportunity to work from
the beginning with real clients and the standard of the salon is really way beyond my expectations. It really is
on par with salons in the industry – it has everything you need. The tutors are very professional too. They teach
you what you need to know but they go way beyond that. I love coming to College to learn.”
Bogdan is exceptionally passionate about hairdressing and has big hopes for his future in the industry. He said,
“I’ve had jobs in the past where getting up to go to work has been like a chore, but genuinely when I get up now
I can’t wait to go to College or work. I love hairdressing.
“I’m definitely going to stay and do my second and third year – the hairdressing industry is always changing;
you never stop learning. After I finish third year my dream is to join the Vidal Sassoon Hair Academy. I know it
will be hard but I want to be the best at what I do.”

QUALIFICATION for Work - Jasmin Abed-Ghers (18)
For Jasmin Abed-Ghers, the decision to come to North East Scotland College has been hugely beneficial. After
leaving Aboyne Academy after her fourth year, she joined the full-time Preparation for Work course before
progressing to Qualification for Work the following year.
PROFILE
She said, “During the Preparation for Work course we got to try out a variety of different things including retail,
gardening and hospitality to see which interested us the most, then this year we have been able to spend more
time on our favourite area. I chose hospitality as I really enjoy it and, with my dad being a chef, I think it has
rubbed off on me!”
This year, through the College, Jasmin has had the opportunity to do some work experience at a major hotel
in Ballater two afternoons a week. She said, “My work experience has been hard work but I’ve really enjoyed it!”
The icing on the cake for Jasmin is that before her course had finished she discovered that she had been
accepted for an apprenticeship in food and drink with the Hilton group.
She said, “I’m delighted to be accepted for the apprenticeship and, one day, I hope to be as good a chef as my
dad!”

HND Acting and Performance year 2 - Andrew JohnS Cameron (21)
From Aberdeen to Cannes, Andrew Johns Cameron’s final year at North East Scotland College was a bit of whirlwind. Whilst
preparing for his final production with his classmates, Andrew was also sharing the red carpet with stars like Ryan Gosling
and Matt Smith at the Cannes Film Festival.
During his time at NESCol, Andrew secured the lead male role in the short film Whistle My Lad, which was screened at the
festival in June. Andrew described his time working on the film: “It was a great experience. I am so humbled to be a part of
the short film. I just keep thinking ‘how did I get so lucky?’ It’s crazy. I just had such a good time and everyone involved in the
project was fantastic. There was such energy about the whole thing.”
PROFILE
“College definitely helped me to prepare for the experience. Things like vocal work, sight reading, improvisation and teamwork,
which we learn about in college, really added to my experience making the film. And I was also able to take the feeling of
being at college – working hard but being part of a family where everyone enjoys what they are doing – and translate that to
being in the cast of the film. I’ve learned from college to have fun whilst you work.”
Andrew was originally inspired to come to College to study acting and performance after watching David Tennant on Doctor
Who and seeing how fun acting could be. After securing his place on the course, he was not disappointed.
“The highlights of my time at College have definitely been the productions we get to put on. You do one in your first year
of the HND and two in your second year,” Andrew explained. “The course requires a lot of individual work, but you work so
closely with your classmates in the productions that you learn a lot about teamwork and you have a great time.”
Andrew is taking a year out to work and pursue his acting career. He is hoping to study at a drama school in the future and
he believes NESCol has prepared him for a career as a performer.
“The course is the whole package. You learn the skills of acting and performance and you actually get to put them into
practice. The whole way through the course you never stop learning. I was able to build my confidence and my eyes were
opened to areas of theatre I wouldn’t have normally considered.”

Advanced Professional Cookery - Ashleigh Foster (21) & Pippa Cortis (20)
Ashleigh Foster and Pippa Cortis have spent the last three years at NESCol, working their way through the College’s
Professional Cookery courses, from Introduction to Advanced. The duo, who became friends during their time here, have
both excelled in the course. They are now heading off in different directions to continue their journeys into professional
cooking careers and both are grateful to the College for helping them progress.
Ashleigh said, “Everything we’ve learnt from the lecturers has been invaluable. Obviously, you learn the curriculum, but you
are constantly learning extra things from people with first-hand experience. The opportunities you get are amazing. If you
are willing to listen, the lecturers are willing to share.”
PROFILE
During her three years on the course, Ashleigh has travelled to China to give cooking demonstrations at a seafood exhibition
and also to Edinburgh with the College’s catering company Aramark. Pippa explained how working in one of the College’s
fine dining training restaurants was invaluable to their learning experience.
She said, “Professional Cookery students get to work in the College’s training restaurant, serving members of the public. You
learn about working in a professional environment and, in third year, you really start to think about speed, technical skills and
precision. College has really expanded our skills.”
As well as working in the College’s restaurant, both Pippa and Ashleigh have found employment at the restaurant Giraffe. On
completion of their course, Pippa is going to continue her way up the ladder in the organisation.
“I’ve gone from a Commis Chef to a Chef de Partie to a junior Sous Chef and then a Sous Chef in Aberdeen,” she said. “Now
I’m going on to become the support chef in a team of people who are travelling the country and opening up new Giraffe
restaurants in Scotland. I’ll be helping to organise new kitchens and teaching chefs how the menu works – helping run the
kitchen to make sure everything is to the standard of the company.”
Ashleigh, on the other hand, is continuing to pursue her dream career of becoming a patisserie chef and is moving to
Glasgow to do an HNC and HND in Patisserie.
“I want to be a pastry chef. I’m really looking forward to the course. We’ve learned different elements of pastry at NESCol, but
I can’t wait to really focus on those skills.”
Pippa added, “I definitely think the course has been so valuable in getting us to where we are now – you learn so much at each
level and keep gaining more and more knowledge and skills.”

HND Applied Sciences Year 1 - Ben Mosley (21)
When Ben Mosley attended Inverurie Academy, his career ambitions lay in physics, working in the engineering
industry. But when it came time to apply for his next step in education, Ben decided that he wanted more of a
grounding in other sciences like chemistry and biology, which he had never studied in school. So he applied for
the NC Applied Sciences SCQF Level 5 course at North East Scotland College.
PROFILE
Ben completed the Level 5 course and the Level 6 course and went on to study the HND in Applied Sciences.
And in his time here, he has discovered that his passion lay not in physics, but in marine biology.
“You get taught such a diverse range of subjects on the course,” he said. “It’s been great building knowledge of

HND Social Sciences - Tabatha Forbes (21)
Tabatha applied for the Introduction to Social Sciences course in 2011, wishing to return to learning after a
considerable gap in education.
PROFILE
Reflecting on how her journey at College began Tabatha said, “Having been a mum and holding down a number
of jobs for some years I decided it was time to improve my qualifications and return to education.
“I enrolled on the Introduction to Social Sciences course and soon discovered a love of the social sciences.
I then progressed to the social sciences ‘Highers’ course, where I surprised myself by passing everything and
managing to get pretty good marks.”
For the first time Tabatha realised that studying at first year university level was clearly within her capabilities,
and she applied for the HND Social Sciences course.
“I’m now doing my HND and even considering going on to university – something I would never have thought
possible – or even considered when I first started at College!”
Because of her exceptional work ethic and outstanding achievements, Tabatha was presented with the
Amanda Mills Award in May 2014.

HND Coaching & Development Sport - Rachel Masson (18)
Dedicated student and competitive swimmer Rachel Masson has been training at Aberdeen Sports Village
and Westhill Swimming Pool twice a day whilst studying full-time towards an HND in Coaching & Development
Sport at North East Scotland College.
Rachel’s hard work has definitely paid off because not only did she made great progress with completing the
first year of her HND, she was also selected to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow
during the summer of 2014.
PROFILE
Rachel said, “The past couple of years have been hectic, what with finishing school in Aboyne alongside the
intense training I’ve been doing for swimming trials and competitions. My family have been very supportive
and since I came to College, I’ve also had lots of support there too. I’ve had to travel to compete and train for
swimming and the department has been extremely helpful in allowing me to complete College work around
these commitments.”
She continued, “I’ve enjoyed the course immensely and taking on some new challenges has been great. For
example, coaching primary school pupils was daunting at first but once I got used to it, it was really rewarding to
see the children make progress. Also, football training was new to me – it’s completely different to swimming!”
Rachel is looking forward to returning to NESCol after the summer to continue her studies. She said, “Ultimately,
I would like to train to become a strength and conditioning coach but, of course, in the meantime I will keep up
my training for swimming as my next goal is the Olympic Games in Rio.”

Library+
Library+ is the brand name of North East Scotland College’s regional library
service. There are four Library+ sites at North East Scotland College at Aberdeen
City, Altens, Craibstone and Fraserburgh Campuses.
Each Library+ stocks slightly different materials depending on the courses
delivered at that site. In addition to subject specific materials each library also
has a wide range of other resources, including:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Books
Journals & magazines
Newspapers
DVDs and audio CDs
e-books
e-resources
PCs
Printers
Scanners
Study spaces
Photocopiers.
Library+ also has an extensive online catalogue which can be found in the Library+
area of Blackboard. Here you can access a wide range of electronic resources
including e-books, journals, databases and many other multimedia resources
which can be used anywhere you have access to the internet, at home or in
College. Many of these resources can be downloaded direct to your computer and
used offline too. In addition Library+ also offers support with information skills
such as referencing, searching for and appraising information and research skills.

IT Centre
In addition to the PCs available for use in the four Library+ sites, the Aberdeen City
Campus also features a large IT Centre which is available to all NESCol students.
The IT Centre operates both as a teaching area and as a flexible learning space
where you can work both independently and collaboratively. It houses over 200
computers, a colour printer/photocopier and several black and white printers.
Instructors are also always on hand within the IT Centre to provide you with
support and guidance on the use of basic IT software applications should you
need it. Appointments can be made at the IT Centre Reception.
At Fraserburgh Campus there are many PCs located within the atrium space
of the building which you are free to use whenever you wish. Again, basic
IT support can be accessed in the Fraserburgh Library+ where there are also IT
facilities.

PC Access and Mobile Devices
At North East Scotland College, many courses involve the use of computers in
learning and teaching. This can mean using them at College both inside and
outside the classroom, or for undertaking coursework at home.
Whilst the College has a number of specialist computing rooms to support
particular courses with specialist computing requirements, on many courses you
will be required to bring a personally owned device, such as a laptop or tablet,
to College for the purposes of learning. You will often hear this referred to as
Bring Your Own Device or BYOD. You will be advised by College staff what the
arrangements are for the course you have chosen to study.
If you are asked to supply a laptop or netbook and you have difficulty in meeting
the cost, please arrange to see a Student Funding Adviser to discuss your current
options by contacting our Student Services Reception:

North East Scotland College has formal articulation links with RGU, the University of Aberdeen and many other universities around Scotland, as well as the
Open University. All of our final year HN courses now progress into at least one degree with many having several options.

What does this mean?
No wasted time for a start! In the majority of cases, students who successfully complete their HND (2 years) can go straight into year three of a degree.
132
What’s the catch?
There’s no catch as long as you satisfy the course terms and conditions and apply through UCAS before the January
deadline. By coming to College first it allows you to settle into studying and makes the step up to university less
daunting. It’s also a way into university if you didn’t make the grades first time round.
Terms and Conditions
In order to articulate, you must be on a specified HNC/HND route and have successfully completed your course. You
may have to fulfil certain knowledge requirements or selection criteria. For instance, depending on the individual
course requirements, students may be asked to complete particular modules while at College, go through the
interview process or submit a portfolio of work.
To find out more about the specific degree course entry requirements, students should speak to their Guidance
Tutor or their Curriculum & Quality Manager, but in the meantime, take a look at the pathways available in the next
section of this prospectus and start thinking Higher!
Degree Link
Degree Link is the unique partnership between North East Scotland College and Robert Gordon University (RGU)
allowing students to enter directly into year three of a degree from HND level. As the first and only college in Scotland
to be an associate of a university, NESCol has worked closely with RGU to offer students seamless progression from
one course to another.
Degree Link is mostly offered on a 2+2 basis (two years at College followed by two years at university) but there are
also opportunities for a 1+1+2 – students start on an HNC course and progress onto the second year of the related
HND course at College, before progressing directly into third year at RGU. In addition, there are 1+3 routes available
on certain courses.
The best part of Degree Link is that you can start at a level where you feel comfortable - in College - and still end up
with an Honours Degree.
There are over 30 different Degree Link courses available. More information is available on our website:
www.degree-link.org.uk
