A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Friends and Family of Wyoming High School,
It is hard to believe that our Fall season is wrapping up and we are moving
in to the Winter sports season (I hesitate to say "snow" season!). It is also
time for our Parent-Teacher Conferences. Please see the schedule below
and mark your calendars. All conferences will be held in our main gym this
year. We look forward to seeing you. If you should have questions please
feel free to contact me.
On Thursday, November 13 we are doing some conferences a bit differently, by scheduling with some parents and students. These conferences
have already been set and the office has been in contact with parents. Even
though this is happening, we will still have all teachers available in the gym
for these times as well. Again, come at any time on the 3 days!
The other bit of information I would draw your attention to in this newsletter
is the article on the Math Across the Curriculum and Article/Math of the
Week. These are school-wide initiatives that we are taking on to help our students. In essence every Monday all students are reading an article or completing a common math problem. This happens during our Extension time
(3rd hour) and we then discuss the article or problem as a group. Also, all
teachers are looking to make connections across the curriculum with math.
Please read the articles as we continue to use these strategies as a staff.

Counselor Corner
1. Students need to work on recovery as soon as they can. After school tutorial and Math Café are great opportunities to
get help.
2. Sophomores and juniors should be working to keep their
grade point averages up. It takes a lot to bring a GPA back
up.
3. Sophomores and juniors should be taking advantage of their
3rd hour extension study sessions for the ACT and Work Keys.
4. .Juniors will be taking the ACT on March 3rd and the Work
Keys on March 4th as part of their Michigan Merit Exam.
5. Seniors should be applying to colleges now. Transcripts
need to be requested through www.parchment.com .
Parchment allows for transcripts to be sent safely, securely
and easily. This is a paperless transcript that goes directly
to the college or university.
6. REMEMBER – scholarships should not charge for you to
apply. Check out scholarship information from Mrs. Harig’s
blog http://whsseniorsonly.blogspot.com

8. Students planning on applying to GRCC need to have their
application in by December 1st. Applications are online and
have no application fee. www.grcc.edu . Students applying
to MSU and U of M should have their applications in by
November 1st for best consideration for scholarships.
Students applying to GVSU need to have their completed
application and transcript by Dec 31st to be considered for
scholarships. Check the website for the college of choice
for important dates.

EXTENDED LIBRARY HOURS
The Media Center will be open for extended after school hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A snack and late bus will be provided.
The Media Center Lab will be open for student use Monday through Friday from 6:45 to 7:15 in the morning.
MATH CAFE
Come to The Math Cafe! The Math Cafe will be open in Mr. Retan's room (45) from
2:45 - 3:45 every Monday and Thursday. Math, coffee drinks, and cool tutors. The
Math Cafe is open to all students in all math classes. Take advantage of this great opportunity!
SENIOR ALL-NIGHT PARTY INFO
We will be placing another order for Senior Sweatshirts just after Thanksgiving so that students
are able to receive them before Christmas break. Sweatshirts are $60 due at time of ordering
and are your senior's ticket to the All-Nighter. Order forms/permission slips can be picked up in
the office. Mrs Huizinga will be at school during lunch Nov 7, 14, and 21 to collect orders. If
you'd like to order a sweatshirt as a Christmas gift for your senior, please contact Doreen Huizinga at 516-0862 or [email protected] to make those arrangements. All money is due
for the Envelope Fundraiser. Please return all collected donations in the office as soon as possible. The Goal for this fundraiser was for every senior to fill 10 envelopes with $10 each by
asking for donations to the Senior All-Nighter. If we reach our goal of $25,000 there will not be
a need for any further fundraising. Please encourage your senior to fill his/her envelopes.
SAVE THE DATE
November 10 - Senior Parent Meeting at 7:00pm in Room 56 (across from the cafeteria).
There will be an Auction planning meeting following the general meeting. All senior parents are
welcome.
December 5 and 6 - Barnes and Noble Fundraiser - Plan to do your Holiday Shopping as a
percentage of all sales will be donated to the Senior All-Night Party. We are in need of volunteers for this event! We will be providing entertainments in the form of crafts, music, and reading with a special reading of The Polar Express on Friday night. We will also be providing free
gift wrap on Friday and Saturday. Please visit the Facebook page for volunteer times.
February 7 - Auction - Our annual Auction will be held at the Moose Lodge at 2630 Burlingame
SW. Tickets will go on sale at the end of November, $10 per person or $15 per couple, and will
include a catered dinner. This is an adult only event. If you'd like to donate something to the
auction please contact one of the officers listed below.

PARENT ADVISORY MEETINGS
Parents and guardians are invited to meet with Mr. Robrahn to discuss what is
happening at Wyoming High School. We will be holding these meetings three
times per school year. There will be two meetings per day to accommodate
different work schedules & parent availability. The morning meeting content
will be exactly the same as the evening.

FRONTIERS JOINS LITTLE FREE LIBRARY ORGANIZATION
A Little Free Library is now located outside the entrance to the school's Frontiers program. Little Free Library book houses allow anyone in the community to
select, for free, a book to read. Individuals are encouraged to bring a book to
exchange, but it is not required. The idea comes from a nonprofit organization
that started in Wisconsin. According to the website, littlefreelibrary.org, there
are over 15,000 Little Free Libraries nationwide. The little libraries are part of a
reading initiative taking place in all of Wyoming's' schools. Students are currently keeping reading logs, working to reach a weekly goal of minutes spent
reading outside of the classroom. A district-wide committee has also been developed to work on developing its next step towards Reading Initiative projects.
The ultimate goal is to turn Wyoming into a city of readers. The Little Free Library is just the first step in making this happen.
Along with the new book house, Frontiers students also created an area where
those books can be enjoyed, featuring some new landscaping. Some new trees
were planted as well as some bulbs for flowers we'll see in the spring.

Math Across the Curriculum
Has your student come home frustrated that they are using Math in their Language Arts class? If this is true, maybe this will help explain why your student is
experiencing their frustration. In an effort to improve our students’ math skills and
implement the Common Core Standards, we are implementing “Math Across the
Curriculum”. This simply means that math is going to be used in ALL classes,
even art, band, and physical education. The math department has done a tremendous job of providing every teacher with some practical and important application
type math problems to be discussed and solved during 3rd hour Extension every
other Monday. Many of these examples are found in the ACT practice books that
each student was provided.
Each teacher is using Math where it relates to the content that they teach in
their daily lessons. For example, in chemistry the students were solving problems
using the concept percent and absolute value when calculating percent error in
their laboratory measurements.
Math is an important part of today’s working society and also provides students with numerous opportunities to use their critical thinking
skills.
Article of the week & Math of the week
During third hour extension every other Monday, our students actively read an article of the week. The article of the week is chosen to apply directly to high school
students or to current events. We believe that students should stay informed
about the world around them. We actively read the article to improve our reading
skills. Additionally, by reading about a common topic we hope to build our community. It is nice for all of our teachers and students to have read the same thing--to
have common ground--so we can talk about a specific topic across all of our
classes if we need to.
On weeks when there is no article, every student does math of the week.
The purpose is to build real world connections with math. Some of the questions
are practical and some are samples of standardized math questions your students will see on the PLAN, ACT, or NEAP. An added benefit of solving and discussing math problems as a community is that we get to work on our higher level
thinking skills. All of our students and all of our teachers are thinking about math.
Access to the article of the week and math of the week can be found in the
daily announcements on Mondays. Please check your email. And on Monday
night could you ask your student about the article and math? Together we hope to
grow our minds and our test scores.
Wyoming High School Sports
Wolves Boys Basketball
High School boys basketball tryouts will be November 17, 18, and 19. Information
was given to candidates at the October 28 meeting. The Wolves competed in the
Fall League at the Courthouse Athletic Center on all three levels thanks to volunteers Scott DeYoung and Steve Traylor. Friday, November 28, the day after
Thanksgiving the teams will be scrimmaging at 9:00am. Freshmen at Unity, JV at
Hudsonville, Varsity at Northview. The second preseason scrimmages will be at
East Kentwood Saturday December 6. Elementary teams have been formed (sign
ups were October 21) and clinics will be November 8,15, and 22. Practices will begin in November also. Elementary games begin in January.

SPORTS INFORMATION...
COMMUNICATION YOU SHOULD EXPECT FROM
YOUR CHILD’S COACH.
1. Philosophy of the coach.
2. Expectations the coach has for your child
and the other players on the squad.
3. Locations and times of all practices and
contests.
4. Team requirements, i.e. fees, special equipment, off-season conditioning.
5. Procedure should your child be injured during participation.
6. Discipline that results in the denial of your
child’s participation.
How playing time is determined.
COMMUNICATIONS COACHES EXPECT
FROM PARENTS.
1. Concerns, expressed directly to the
coach.
2. Notifications of any scheduled conflicts in
advance.
3. Information regarding any medical, physical, or emotional concerns.
4. Volunteering to assist at events.
5. Acknowledgement for a job well done.
There are situations that may require a
conference between the coach and the
parent. These are to be encouraged. It
is important that both parties involved
have a clear understanding of the others
COMPETITIVE CHEER
At the end of October there will be Open Gyms for tryout preparation. Tryouts will be held
Monday, November 10th through Wednesday, November 12th. Any interested female athlete
should friend the Wyoming Wolves Cheer page for more details or send an email to
[email protected] - please remember that you must be academically eligible and
have a CURRENT physical on file in the athletic office to participate in the open gyms or tryouts.
There will be a Mandatory Parent/Athlete meeting for all students trying out for Competitive
cheer grades 7th through 12th. This will be held at 7 pm in the HS cafeteria on the first evening
of tryouts - Monday, November 10th!
We look forward to seeing as many people as possible in our gym!!
The Wyoming Athletic Boosters support the Wyoming High School athletes and sports programs by raising money to assist with the needs of athletes when athletic department funds are
limited. The Wyoming Athletic Boosters raise money by selling clothing with the school’s name
and mascot on it; selling popcorn, hot dogs, and other food items at sporting events in the concession stand, holding special events like the Grimm Relays which is held in the Spring and
many other fundraising events.
The Wyoming Athletic Boosters meet the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Wyoming High School Cafeteria. Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings. please join us. As always, we need volunteers to help out in our concession stand at sporting events. If your interested, please contact the Wyoming High School Athletic Department.

Bethany Christian Services is offering classes for youth that are geared toward
students who have a history of past chronic absenteeism or emerging truancy issues. This truancy intervention project is called “3-D Diversion Program” (Decisions Determine Direction). The “3-D Diversion Program” is built
around the national evidence-based program known as Wyman Teen Outreach ®
which highlights the following areas:
Reduce school truancy/absenteeism
Strengthen school success
Improve healthy decision-making
Reduce youth entry or deeper penetration into the delinquency system
Individual Support
Why is it important to get your child involved if they have a past history of chronic
absenteeism or emerging truancy issues?
Each school day, hundreds of thousands of students are missing from their classrooms, many without permission. This can have negative effects on the futures of
young people. Truancy may lead to failing classes; dropping out of school; may be
a precursor to delinquent and criminal activity; places students at higher risk of
being drawn into behaviors involving drugs, alcohol, violence, or unwanted pregnancies. Furthermore, truancy has high costs to society and families. Truancy's
impact also extends into the adult years where it has been linked to numerous
negative outcomes. Consequently, it is critical to identify strategies that intervene effectively with youth who are chronically truant and that interrupt their progress to delinquency and other negative behaviors by addressing the underlying
reasons behind their absence from school.
Bethany Christian Services will be providing the free “3-D Diversion Program”
curriculum to the following local public school districts: Wyoming, Kelloggsville, Godfrey-Lee, and Godwin. Our Truancy team consist of the following team members: Erin Sweeny, Tiffany Clarke, Lita Trevion-Rojas, Ernesto
Starling, Paul Miles, and Freya Yskes. We will be working collaboratively
with each school to provide a quality effort to reduce chronic absenteeism
and prevent emerging truancy issues from arising.
Orientation will be held at the YMCA Downtown, which is located at:

All youth development classes and orientation sessions will include food and fun!
