Newsletter
November 2014
Dear Parents/Guardians:
In the October newsletter, I shared with
you the work that the Rogers Planning
Team had engaged with in order to
establish instructional goals for our
current school year. We will continue to
instruct in student- centered/
differentiated classrooms that emphasize
both content and skills leading towards
students developing deep conceptual understandings that they are able to independently apply to new situations.
On Friday, November 14th, at 9:30 a.m.,
please join me for our first Parent/
Principal Coffee in the Rogers Cafeteria,
so that I may highlight some of these
instructional initiatives established by
our planning team. In addition, the
Rogers School invites you to our Parent
Visitation Day on the 14th as well. During our Parent Visitation, which runs
from 9:30 to 1:30 p.m., you will have the
opportunity to follow your child’s schedule and experience the excellent instruction I have observed in their classrooms.
When you arrive at Rogers, please remember to sign in at the Main Office and
obtain a visitor’s pass. The coffee and
visitation events are a fantastic way to
build strong connections to our school, in
addition to supporting your child’s continued progress and growth.
are able to deepen their conceptual
understanding and move towards
increased independence. Hopefully
you will be able to join us on
November 14th to see the incredible
work that both our students and
teachers have been engaging in.
Thank you for everything you continue to do at home in order to ensure
your children are ready and excited
to learn each and every day. That
level of support sets all of us up for
success in maximizing every child’s
continued progress and growth.
I hope that you and your family have
a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Sincerely,
Dennis DesRosiers
Principal
Rogers Middle school
As I visit classrooms, it is exciting to see
students extend their thinking by writing
carefully crafted responses to questions
that require them to take a stance and
develop their ideas fully. In addition,
they have been receiving clear and specific feedback from their teachers during
individual and group conferences. By
engaging students in higher level thinking tasks and providing clear feedback
that establishes concrete goals, students

CONGRATULATIONS!
E-NEWS
E-news is a way of communicating with Rogers parents.
From time to time, we will send out e-mails telling of an
event that occurred at school, or reminders and information regarding upcoming activities, deadlines and opportunities for students and parents. We continue to send
home printed newsletters and letters, but e-news allows
us to send messages to you quickly at home or at work.
To register, send an e-mail to:
[email protected]
Include your child(ren)’s name(s) and grade(s) in the body
of your e-mail. Your e-mail address will remain confidential.
We will only use e-mail addresses that have been e-mailed
to this special account. When you change your e-mail address, please let us know so you will continue to receive
our updates.
Dignity for All Students
The Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) was enacted in 2012 to promote a safe and supportive environment
for all students, on school grounds and at school functions. In West Irondequoit we continue to maintain a culture of mutual respect and our Code of Conduct provides expectations for students, staff and residents as they
work, volunteer and visit our schools. In each school, a DASA Coordinator has been appointed and trained to
handle human relations in the areas of race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender (identity or expression) and sex. The coordinators are available to assist students and families with any concerns.
The DASA Coordinator at Rogers School is Principal DesRosiers. Mr. DesRosiers can be reached at 336-4717.
Procedure For Reporting An Absence / Tardy
Absences from school for any reason should be reported by phone on the day of absence and each successive day the child is out of
school. Please call the Health & Attendance Office at 336-3030 before 9 a.m. to report your child absent. Please leave your child’s
name, his/her teacher’s name and the reason they are not attending. Please keep your child home from school until they have been
fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. When your child returns to school a written note is required
by law.
If your child will be late for school for any reason, please also notify the Health & Attendance Office at 336-3030 prior to 9 a.m.
When your child arrives at school, a written note is required.
This procedure is used to make sure we know where your child is at all times. Calling the Attendance Line prior to 9 a.m.
will help eliminate calls to parents. Also, we are required to have a written excuse on file for all student absences, tardiness
or early dismissals as part of their permanent record.
Early Rochester Day
Please Help!
The fourth grade is in need of metal lids from
frozen juice cans. These will be used for an
activity on Early Rochester Day. If you use
frozen juice at home, please consider saving the
lids for us. You can send the lids to school
with your child anytime and the lids will be
sent to the fourth grade. Thank you for
supporting our special event.
Note: Please do not send any lids from soup or
other canned goods as we only use the juice
lids.

Mrs. Evans & Mr. Cardon
November will be “Fitness Month” at Rogers School. Students will be finishing up our
Cross Country Running unit. During this unit, students will learn about “aerobic” exercise
and how to take their pulse. We will learn about the heart and the effect exercise has
on our heart rates. The Cross Country running unit will culminate in our annual Rogers
“Run for the Apple” meet.
Sixth grade students will prepare for the fitness test, as well as be involved in a Team
Handball unit during the month of November. Sixth graders will participate in the
district fitness test held later in November.
Fourth and fifth graders will be involved in a “Fun and Fit” unit. This unit will prepare
students for the district fitness test held later in November.
Rogers Chess Club
Chess Club will have two meetings this month. Meetings are held from 3:05 – 4:00 in
Miss Flood’s room (#306). Students must arrange for transportation home prior to
