HIS WORD TODAY
by Rev. William J. Reilly
The Dedication
of the Lateran Basilica
November 9, 2014
“You are God’s building. Thanks
to the favor God showed me I
laid a foundation as a wise
master- builder might do, and
now someone else is building
upon it. Everyone, however, must
be careful how he builds. No one
can lay a foundation other than
the one that has been laid,
namely Jesus Christ…Are you
not aware that you are the
temple of God, and that the
Spirit of God dwells in you?”
The church we reflect upon today,
a major basilica in Rome, is called
‘the mother of all the churches of
Rome and the world.’ It has a
special place in the history of the
church.
We move from a physical building
and are reminded by St. Paul that
we too are temples of the Spirit.
We are God’s dwelling among His
people. The words of John’s gospel
‘and the Word became flesh and
He dwelt among us’ speak not only
of Mary and the Incarnation, but
also of the reality, that God lives in
and among us.
© 2013 Bon Venture Services, LLC | Diane Diederich
How meaningful as we read these
words is the fact that the person
sitting and praying next to us, is a
temple of God’s Spirit. How
challenging for us to recognize the
presence of the Lord in those of our
family, those with whom we work.
How beautiful we are as we reflect
with Paul that ‘I live, now, not I,
but Christ lives in me.’
As I spend time in prayer, whether
in a magnificent cathedral or
humble chapel, the fact is that the
Lord is present and that is what
really matters. As I spend time with
family and friends, and recognize
the presence of the Lord in every
individual that is what really
matters. The next time I pass a
church, may I remember that His
dwelling is there and also with me.
In the words of Oscar Romero,
Christ is the Master builder, we are
the ministers.

A Word From Father EdYou may have heard the recent story about Brittany
Maynard, the 29-year old newlywed diagnosed with an
inoperable brain tumor and given a prognosis of 6 months
to live, with significant loss of function beforehand. She
and her family had moved from California to Oregon in
order to take advantage of the state’s infamous “Death
with Dignity” law. Despite the pleas of many people, including Philip Johnson who is a Catholic seminarian suffering from the same affliction, Brittany took her own life
on November 1st using a doctor-prescribed treatment.
Some people have described this act as one of bravery,
in which a young person ended her life on her own terms.
However, the Church expresses serious concern of this
standpoint: “Everyone is responsible for his life before
God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the
sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life
gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of
our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has
entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of. Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve
and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just
love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it
unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation,
and other human societies to which we continue to have
obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living
God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 2280
and 2281).
Of course, no one asks to suffer and suffering in itself is
not a good thing. However, the value of human life is
something beyond any possible price as a most special gift
from God. If we or someone we love finds themselves in
such as situation, either physically or psychologically, we
are called by Christ to follow his example of true courage
in the face of death: the way of the Cross, which can ultimately offer salvation to all brave enough to walk it. Yes,
at such times we make use of all reasonable means for
palliative care, but also we do so with recognition and respect for the ultimate dignity of our lives as seen in the
light of God.
For Brittany, and all those who have made such a
choice, we commend to God’s love and mercy. As the
Church also says: “We should not despair of the eternal
salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By
ways known to Him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons
who have taken their own lives” (Catechism, 2283).

ST. DENIS CHURCH
THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In today’s Gospel Jesus challenges us to “stay
awake” by taking time to seriously look at ourselves, the
priorities of our lives, and how we are growing spiritually.
Ask yourself “What would Jesus Christ do?” and then
give your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that
those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving.
The St. Denis Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul serves everyone living in the parish neighborhood, whether they are parishioners or not, since all
are joined together through the realities of creation and
redemption. Our Conference recognizes our responsibility toward all our neighbors as brothers and sisters in
Christ. If you need assistance please call our hotline:
732-223-1383.
Our next general meeting will be Tuesday, November

Discovering hope and joy in the Catholic faith.
November 2014
Stewardship is giving thanks
St. Andrew Dung-Lac
St. Andrew could also be the
patron of the
persecuted. In 1785,
he was born in
Vietnam to a
poor family.
He converted,
and became a
Catholic priest
assigned to the missions. He
was swept up in the terrible
religious persecution of the
emperor, Minh-Meng. St.
Andrew and his companions
were arrested and tortured to
force them to renounce their
faith. They refused and were
martyred. Today, such religious
persecution continues in many
parts of the world.
Catholic Guilt
Popular culture often refers
negatively to “Catholic guilt,”
implying that Catholics are
weighed down by an
unfortunate awareness of
having done wrong. Sincerely
acknowledging true guilt is the
first step toward forgiveness.
God, the Partner
When David faced
insurmountable odds against
the Philistines, he turned to
God for help. He asked if he
should fight, he
followed instructions
carefully, and he gave
God credit for
his victory.

For many Catholics, we think
seriously about stewardship when our
parish or diocese raises money but
real stewardship is about
becoming more fulfilled
and having a greater
sense of purpose. It is
giving back to God in
gratitude for his gifts. And
while it’s not just about
money, good stewards
have all the money
they need.
God’s
family
comes first.
All families
come together
in love to care for each other,
enjoy each other, and support each
other. In God’s family, we come
together in his love to care for each
other, enjoy each other, and support
each other. As good stewards, we meet
the needs of God’s family first, before
we spend time or money on anything
else.
Find your place. Ask God to help
you discern and learn your place in
his family. What are you to do with
your gifts?
Take your
seat at the
table. Find out
where you can
put your talents
to work in your
parish. Talk with
your pastor, with
the rectory staff,
and with parish
leaders.
Think before
spending. Before you commit
your time or money to any purpose,
make sure you have taken care of the
needs of God’s family first. Everything
we have and everything we are comes
from God. He deserves the best we
have to give in return.
Why do Catholics offer
Masses for the dead?
Judas Maccabee ordered
prayers and sacrifices for
Jewish soldiers who died
in sin (2 Maccabees
12:38-46). St. Paul prayed
for Onesiphorus after his
death (2 Timothy 1:18).
Catholics believe that prayers
and sacrifices benefit the
dead.
When we die in God’s
friendship we eventually go to
Heaven, but if we haven’t
properly atoned for certain
sins we have to be purified
in Purgatory first. We pray
for the souls in Purgatory
to help them pass through
faster than they would
otherwise.
