Brief History of Farmor’s School
Farmor's School serves a predominantly rural area which includes some of the prettiest
villages in the Cotswolds. We have close links with our primary schools in Bibury, Down
Ampney, Fairford, Hatherop, Kempsford, Meysey Hampton, Southrop and St Lawrence,
Lechlade. We also have a significant intake from St Sampson's, Ampney Crucis,
Wiltshire and from the independent sector.
The school is situated in beautiful parkland, within walking distance of the centre of
Fairford. The eighteen acre grounds are well maintained by our site staff and include a
modern and well-equipped sports hall. Farmor's School was founded in 1738 with money
left by Miss Elizabeth Farmor and Miss Mary Barker to educate fifty boys in Fairford. In
1815 girls were admitted into the school but they were kept separate from the boys. In
1922 the school became co-educational.
The school moved to its present site in 1961 and became an 11-18 comprehensive
school in 1966.
In 2004 Farmor’s became a Business and Enterprise Specialist School and in June 2007
we were designated a High Performing Specialist School. As a result of this we became
a Science College which complements our Business and Enterprise specialism. The
extra resources that come with Specialist School status enable us to provide extra
opportunities for students both in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities.
In 2014 there are 956 students in the school including 272 in the Sixth Form.
The school has doubled in size in the last ten years and during this time there have been
several building projects to reflect the growth in student numbers and the demands of the
modern curriculum.
Farmor’s School converted to an Academy in August 2011.

Buildings and Grounds
The Academy has a mix of modern and 1960's build accommodation. We have been
working hard over the last few years to improve the teaching and learning environment
through a combination of grounds and building works.
Since 2012 the Academy has been successful in gaining nearly £2 million from the
Academies Capital Maintenance Fund. This money comes from Central Government and
has allowed us to:



Replace windows and doors throughout the school
Replace the roof coverings on all buildings with a flat roof
Build a new Learning Resource Centre for our Sixth form students - this was built
alongside a refurbishment and remodelling of their current accommodation.
During the summer work started on our most recent successful bid, the refurbishment
and remodelling of all of the toilet blocks within the school. The first block is due to be
finished within the next couple of weeks and all works completed early in 2015.

Organisation of Classes
There are 43 x 35 minute lessons a week, most of which are taught in double lessons of
70 minutes. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays there are three afternoon lessons
and school finishes at 3.35pm. On Wednesdays and Fridays there are two lessons and
school finishes at 3.00pm.
In Key Stage 3 students are mainly taught in mixed ability tutor groups. Setting takes
place in Maths (from Y7), Languages (from Y8) and Science (from Y9). English is taught
in mixed ability groups throughout the school, although a small group is identified in Key
Stage 4 which studies English Language only. All other students study both English
Language and English Literature.
BTEC and iGCSE Science have been introduced to provide a range of experiences
designed to meet the needs of the wide range of ability of students in the school.


Mathematics Department Information
The Mathematics timetable is designed to ensure staff teach the full range of age and
ability throughout the school. Year 7 are taught in banded groups and Years 8 to 11 in
setted groups. The Oxford Framework Mathematics scheme is used in Year 7, 8 and 9
and Edexcel GCSE texts in Year 10 and 11. All pupils in Year 11 take the foundation or
Higher Linear papers with two equally weighted terminal papers at the end of Y11. The
top set currently sit an OCR Additional Maths qualification alongside their GCSE in year
11.
In this way the needs and requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met with a
challenging and demanding curriculum.
There is a strong take up of A Level Mathematics in the school and there are currently
three groups in the Y12 and three groups in the Y13 with an additional Further Maths
group in each year. The courses followed are the Edexcel Modules in Pure Mathematics,
Applied Mathematics and Statistics.
All 6 mathematics rooms have interactive whiteboards.
