Enabling IoT
IEEE 802.11ah – Early 2016
– IoT (Internet of Things) applications
• IEEE 802.11ah PHY and MAC has special features specifically for IoT type of applications.
• Envisioned to provide IP connectivity to all types of devices that are currently not
connected to the internet and yet-to-be-invented devices
11a/g/n/ac AP
– Target use cases
• Large scale sensor networks and meters
• Extended range hotspot
11ah AP
Indoor
• Outdoor Wi-Fi for cellular traffic offloading
[Some of these use cases drive the need for large numbers of devices per Access Point. ]
– Enhancements to address Internet of Things (IoT)
– PHY/MAC – trade-off of power, range, rate
• Sub-1 GHz license-exempt bands - limited bandwidth/lower data rates.
• Low Power
• Range up to 1 km - favorable propagation characteristics to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands
• OFDM
• Data rates > 100kbps

Enabling IoT
Bluetooth® Main Features
– Bluetooth technology has 3 generations
• The first 2 generations, up to Core 2.1, replaced cables
• The 3rd generation, AMP (or Bluetooth 3.0+HP) , used 802.11 as
an accelerator
– Bluetooth Core 4.0 enables a world of sensors
• Simple models for device discovery, service discovery and data
exchange result in a radio that does not need to spend time on
the air
• Very low duty cycle = low power consumption
• Also known as Bluetooth Smart

NFC Technology Main Features
The concept is to make two devices communicate,
bring them together or make them touch.
– Based on RFID technology at 13.56 MHz.
– Operating distance typically up to 10 cm.
– Compatible with today’s contactless RFID technologies.
– Data exchange rate today up to 848 kbit/s.
– Three modes of operation: P2P, Card Emulation and Reader/Writer
– NFC is complementary to Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi technologies.

5G Targets
– High Performance
In the early debate on
5G some targets for
attributes associated
with high performance
have been proposed.
The consequences on
the attributes of
availability, cost and
efficiency using today’s
technology then follow.
A better balance
between the upper and
lower halves of the plot
will require technical
breakthrough
