The Aggies fell at home to Texas State 37-29, Nov. 1. The loss was the Aggies seventh straight, moving them to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in conference
play.
Despite a pair of career-highs for the Aggies, NM State couldn’t seem to

during the game. While the Aggies would always cut the score to a one
or two possession game, in the end the Bobcats held on to take the one
score game.
NM State running back Larry Rose III set a new career high in rushing
yards, carrying the ball for 181 yards on 24 carries and one touchdown.
Rose also added 45 receiving yards for 226 yards of total offense, leading
the team. Aggie quarterback Tyler Rogers went 36-for-52 for 404 yards
and three touchdowns, a career high in passing yards. Wide receiver
Jerrel Brown had a season high 139 yards on seven receptions and one
touchdown. NM State leading receiver Teldrick Morgan added 70 yards
and one touchdown as well.

Jerrel Brown Into the Record Books
NM State wide receiver Jerrel Brown placed himself into the record books against Texas
State Nov. 1, when he caught an 86-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Rogers.
The 86-yard completion is the longest of his career as well as the longest for the Aggies
this season. More importantly, the pass is the third longest completion in Aggie history,
behind a 94-yard pass to Kim Locklin (Oct. 16, 1982) and a 96-yard connection with
Chris Williams (Oct. 7, 2006).
Brown finished the contest with 139 yards on seven receptions with one touchdown.
139 yards is his career high and the first game he broke 100 yards receiving in his career.
Last year Brown was the Aggies top receiver, recording 33 receptions for 484 yards and
two touchdowns. This season he has recorded 30 receptions for 399 yards and two
touchdowns.
Aggies Set Three Career Highs in Loss to Bobcats
Despite the losing effort against Texas State Nov. 1, three separate Aggies had career days
with two Aggies making their way into the record books.
Quarterback Tyler Rogers threw for a career high 404 yards against the Bobcats, putting him in the top 25 for single game passing records. Running back Larry Rose III had
a career high 181 yards rushing, with 122 of those yards coming in the first half. Rose
finished with 226 all-purpose yards and one touchdown.
Wide receiver Jerrel Brown had a career high 139 yards receiving on seven catches.
More importantly, he grabbed a short pass from Rogers and after breaking a tackle took
the ball 86 yards for the score. The 86-yard reception was the longest of the season for
the Aggies, and third longest in Aggie history.
Tyler Rogers at QB
Tyler Rogers has been named as the starting quarterback for the NM State Aggies for the
2014-15 season and has started in all games other than the game versus Idaho.
Rogers has recorded 2,159 yards on 206-327 passing, with 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Rogers has also rushed for 121 yards this year and two touchdowns.
In his debut behind center, the sophomore quarterback went 18-27 for 158 yards and
two touchdowns. With a pass completion rating off 66.7 percent and only one interception, Rogers had an efficiency rating of 132.86 against Cal Poly.
Rogers set a career high in passing yards Nov. 1 in a loss to the Texas State Bobcats. He
went 36-52 for 404 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in the 37-29 loss.
His long of 86 to Jerrel Brown was the longest pass of the season for the Aggies and third
longest in NM State history.
Rogers is a transfer sophomore who played one year at Western Arizona. He played
one season with Arizona Western as the team’s starting quarterback. He threw for 1,832
yards and 14 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. Rogers also ran for 364 yards
and a team-best 10 touchdowns. Rogers missed two and a half games down the final
stretch of the season, but was able to dress for the Matadors third straight appearance in
the Fisher Automotive El Toro Bowl.
In high school Rogers was the starting quarterback at Liberty High School for four years,
leading his team to three league championships. He threw for 5,903 yards during his
high school career, including 76 touchdown passes. Rogers also ran for 1,691 yards and
26 scores. As a senior, Rogers was the league and district player of the year, while also
being selected as a first team all-section and second team all-state. He was one of two
quarterbacks from Arizona selected to play in the California vs. Arizona All-Star game.

New Mexico Talent on Display in 2014
The 2014 NM State football team is filled with local players from
N.M. The team boasts 17 players from the land of enchantment, with
six from the Las Cruces area and nine from the Albuquerque area.
Some of the local players returning from last year are wide receivers Adam Shapiro and Joshua Bowen, running backs Xavier Hall and
Brandon Betancourt and linemen Abram Holland and Matt Ramondo.
Hall and Bettencourt have combined for 564-yards and six touchdowns on 133 carries on the season thus far, while Bowen has 23
receptions for 223 yards and one touchdown.
Valerian Ume-Ezeoke named to Rimington Trophy Watch List
The Rimington Trophy Committee has released its 2014 Fall Watch
List, which features 66 of the best centers in Division I football, including three centers from the Sun Belt Conference. Valerian UmeEzeoke was listed among the preseason candidates for the award
that annually goes to the nation’s best center.
Ume has recorded 29 knockdowns and 11 pancakes, both stats lead
the team.
Ume-Ezeoke started at center for the Aggies offensive line during
the 2013 season, recording 56.5 knockdowns, second highest on the
team. He had a season-high 10 knockdowns against Louisiana (Nov.
2). Ume-Ezeoke’s play helped the Aggies’ leading rusher Germi
Morrison rush for an average of 4.1 yards a rush on 109 carries for
451 yards and a team-high four rushing touchdowns. His blocking
ability also allowed quarterback Andrew McDonald lead the Aggies
in passing, throwing for 2,497 yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging
208.1 yards a game. Ume-Ezeoke was also named to the Remington
Trophy Watch List last season as well.
While more than a dozen All-America teams are selected annually,
the Rimington Trophy committee uses the Walter Camp Foundation,
Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America teams to
determine a winner. The winner will be recognized at the Rimington
Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015.
Aggies in the Sun Belt

Playoff (CFP) the Sun Belt continues to find itself among the
10 premier college football conferences and the new system is
guaranteed universal access based on performance – there are
no automatic qualifiers for the playoff system. Additionally,
the CFP will mean that a spot among the premier bowl games
of college football will be guaranteed to the highest-ranked
champion from the other “Group of Five” conferences: the Sun
Belt Conference, American Athletic Conference, Mountain West
Conference, Mid-American Conference and Conference USA.
With the College Football Playoff included with the league’s
other bowl arrangements, the Sun Belt Conference is tied to
seven total bowl games. The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl,
the GoDaddy Bowl, the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl, the Cure
Bowl (debuting in 2015) all guarantee a home for a bowl eligible Sun Belt Conference team each year. And beginning with
the2016 season, the Sun Belt is also part of a rotation of conferences that will send a team to the Bahamas Bowl and the
Miami Beach Bowl.
The Sun Belt’s 21 non-conference football wins in the 2013
season was a new record for the league - eclipsing the mark of
19 set the year prior. Additionally of note for the league’s nonconference win total was that the Sun Belt fared well against
its peer opponents in the non-AQ BCS ranks. The Sun Belt finished a combined 8-1 against members of Conference-USA (41), the Mid-American Conference (3-0) and the Mountain West
Conference (1-0). The Sun Belt also had the best overall nonconference win percentage when comparing the four non-AQ
conferences.

Looking Ahead
The Aggies will look to take on UL-Monroe Nov. 22 at home
in the Aggie Memorial Stadium. The Aggies are undefeated
against the Warhawks, having gone 3-0 in the series’ history.

went on the road to beat the Warhawks 31-0. The last meeting
between the two teams took place on Oct. 25, 2003 in a close
game, where the Aggies again took the road win 21-14. With
the Aggies having been members of the Sun Belt Conference
from 2001-03 and their return to the SBC in 2014, every game
the two teams have played against each other have been conference matchups. UL-Monroe is currently 2-2 in the SBC and
3-5 overall.

The success as a pass first team has carried into this season,
as the Aggies have recorded 2,279 yards passing on the season
thus far, compared to opponents 1148. Rogers has recorded
2,159 yards passing on 206-of-327 passes. He has thrown for
14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Rogers favorite target
this season is standout wide receiver Teldrick Morgan, who
has caught 53 passes for 675 yards and five touchdowns. Rogers set a career high in passing yards against Texas State Nov. 1,
where he threw for 404 yards on 36-of-52 passing, recording
three touchdowns as well.
True freshman Andrew Allen was named the Aggie starting
quarterback for the game against Idaho (Oct. 18). Allen went
6-of-11 passing, recording 88 yards and one interception. On
the season Allen is 10-of-16 for 120 yards, with a long of 53.
Aggie Memorial’s New Look
After six months, including design and construction, Aggie Memorial Stadium finally has its new field.
The synthetic turf used on the field helps stand up to the heavy
use such as in sports, requires no irrigation or trimming and
the overall upkeep on the field is less than using real grass. The
building of the new field was made possible by a $1 million
donation from Stan Fulton.
There was 74 tons of sand used on the new field as well as 170
tons of rubber infill.
The highlights of the new field include the incredibly detailed
Pistol Pete at the 50-yard line, the state of the art drainage system and storm sewer. The overall sharp and defined markings
on the field are another feature that has been highly touted by
the local fans.
The artificial turf replaces the Hybrid Bermuda that was used
from 1978-2013, which included a quick-draining system beneath the playing surface, was the first Hybrid Bermuda turf
of its kind.

Aggie memorial Stadium has been the dedicated playing field
for NM State since Sept. 16, 1978, when the Aggies christened
the field with a 35-32 victory over I-10 rival UTEP. Eight of the
top 10 crowds in the history of the stadium came against UTEP.
The stadium seats 30,343 fans. The field was constructed for
$4 million and was funded by the New Mexico State Legislature as part of a capital outlay program.
NM State’s Secondary Getting the Job Done
The Aggies secondary is one of the best in the nation, sitting at
No. 2 in the rankings. Behind No. 1 San Jose State (94.5), NM
State has only allowed 143.5 yards through the air per game.
The two defensive highlights of the year game against Cal Poly
(Aug. 28) and Georgia Southern (Oct. 4). In the season opener
against Cal Poly, the Aggies only allowed six yards through the
air. Against Georgia Southern the Aggies only gave up 18 yards
passing, containing the opposing quarterback to a dismal 3-of13 passing night.
Johnson Stepping Up Big for Aggie Secondary
Sophomore defensive back Kawe Johnson has proven to play
an important role for the NM State defense, recording 68 tackles on the season along with a team leading three forced fumbles. And one interception.
Johnson had his breakout performance against No. 17/18
ranked LSU (Sept. 27), where he forced two fumbles and recorded 12 tackles. He also recorded his only interception of
the season against the Tigers.
Johnson has recorded double-digit tackles four times on the
year, with his season high coming against UTEP (Sept. 13). He
also has two tackles for a loss of four yards. Johnson’s 68 tackles places him third for leading tacklers at NM State this season
and No. 12 in the Sun Belt Conference.
NM State Receivers – A Talented Group
NM State boasts a talented receiving core that features five of
last year’s top six receivers led by seniors Jerrel Brown and
Adam Shapiro. The Aggies tend to spread the wealth amongst
the receiving core, which makes any receiver capable of being
a threat to make a play. Of the five receivers who return from
a year ago, each of those players appeared in every game last
season. Each player also managed to catch at least 20 passes
and gain at least 200 receiving yards a season ago.
Although the Aggies have a lot of experience among their receivers, they still are receiving production from their younger
wide-outs. Redshirt sophomore, Teldrick Morgan led the way
for the Aggies in their season opener against Cal Poly on Aug.
28, where he recorded six receptions for 51 yards and caught
the first touchdown of the season for the Aggies on the initial
drive of the game. Redshirt freshman, Gregory Hogan served
as the full-time punt returner and kick returner for the Aggies
in the first game, which appears to be his role going forward.
The receiving core is continuing to play a major role in the Aggie
offense, averaging 253.2-yards a game and 10.6-yards a catch.
NM State has 2,279 passing yards on the season, compared to
their opponents 1,291 yards. Morgan leads all NM State receivers with 63 catches for 745 yards and six touchdowns. Joseph
Matthews is second on the team with 31 catches for 344 yards
and four touchdowns. Senior Jerrel Brown has recorded 30 receptions for 399 yards and two touchdowns, including an 86yard touchdown catch Nov. 1 against the Texas State Bobcats.

Andrew Allen Big Play Potential
Aggie true freshman Andrew Allen has seen limited action
for NM State, but in the few plays he has been involved in the
young quarterback has found success in the out of the ordinary
play calls.
Allen is 10-of-16 on the season through the air for a total of
120 yards. Where Allen has really shined has been in the rushing game, having carried the ball 17 times for 143 yards and
one touchdown.
Allen’s highlight play of the year came against No. 17 LSU when
he took a direct snap 79 yards down the field to score the Aggies only touchdown of the game. He also went 2-2 in the air
against LSU for 16 yards.
10
Allen also showed off his impressive passing skills with a 53yard deep throw to Adam Shapiro against Idaho Oct. 18.
Aggie OL Standing Strong
The NM State offensive line has done an outstanding job this
year in protection, ranking among the best in the nation.
Allowing only five sacks on the season, the Aggie line ranks No.
3 in the nation and first in the SBC with only .63 sacks allowed
per game. Two of the recorded sacks came off intentional
grounding calls.
The OL has recorded a total of 87 knockdowns and 28 pancakes. Valerian Ume-Ezeoke leads the line with 29 knockdowns and 11 pancakes.
Andy Cunningham, a two year starter at offensive tackle, recorded 14 knockdowns and one pancake before being sidelined for the season with an injury. While a major loss to the
line, the Aggies have stepped up and filled the spot.
Return of the Lefty
In the 2013-14 season, NM State was one of only two schools
in the nation that boasted left footed kickers starting at both
punter and place kicker. While punter Cayle Chapman-Brown
has left the Aggies, kicker Maxwell Johnson is returning for his
senior year.
In his 2014 season debut, Johnson went 4-4 in PATs for a total
of four points against the Cal Poly Mustangs on Aug. 28.
On the season, Johnson is 29-29 on PATs and 5-9 on field-goals,
with a long of 41 yards against Georgia State Sept. 6 and has
total of 44 points on the season, leading the Aggies in scoring.
Johnson played in 12 games for the Aggies in 2013 as a place
kicker, kicking 29-of-32 PATs, 10-of-12 field goal and 20 kickoffs. He was 2-of-2 on field goals attempts three times in the
season against Rice (Oct. 19), Abilene Christian (Oct. 26) and
Boston College (Nov. 9). Johnson recorded his longest field
goal of his career, against Rice, a 49-yard kick. Over the last
six games of the season, Johnson made 18 straight extra point
attempts, including a 5-of-5 performance against Louisiana

and former Groza finalists selects the top three finalists for
the award by Monday, November 24th. That same group then
selects the national winner, who will be announced on Thursday, December 11th during the Home Depot College Football
Awards, broadcast live from Orlando, Fla.
Aggie Walk-On Awarded Scholarship

Moore played in nine games during the 2013 season at wide
receiver and on special teams. He had one reception for two
yards against San Diego State Sept. 28. Moore redshirted as a

Head Coach Doug Martin
Doug Martin begins his second season at the helm
of the NM State football program in 2014. Martin
and the Aggies played as an independent team
during Martin’s inaugural season at NM State and
will play as a member of the Sun Belt Conference
in 2014.
under Walker in 2011.
Martin was officially announced as the Aggies’ 34th
head football coach on Feb. 1, 2013, after the departure of former head coach DeWayne Walker to
the NFL. Martin was no stranger to the NM State
program as he was the Aggie offensive coordinator
NM State went 2-10 in 2013 during Martin’s first season as head coach after playing one of the toughest schedules in the school’s history. The Aggies
faced five teams that had participated in a bowl game the previous season
while also playing two teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation.
NM State kicked off the season with a trip to Austin, Texas, to face the 15thranked Texas Longhorns and also made a trip to Los Angeles during the season to play No. 13 UCLA. The Aggies’ home schedule included games versus
Minnesota, which was the first school out of the Big Ten to play at Aggie Memorial Stadium, and Boston College, which was the first school out of the
Atlantic Coast Conference to make a trip to Las Cruces.
The Aggies averaged 20.9 points per game and 382.2 yards per game in
2013, including 141.8 yards per game on the ground and 240.5 yards per
game through the air. The team had a season-high 224 yards rushing against
Abilene Christian on Oct. 26 and a season-high 380 yards passing and receiving versus Boston College on Nov. 9.
Martin’s influence and system began to take shape during the final five games
of the season as NM State went 2-3 in those games and had fourth-quarter
chances for a win in two of the three losses.
Martin would start making an impact on the squad as soon as he accepted the
head coaching position. Before the season began, the Aggies had four players
placed on six different preseason watch lists, the most for any NM State football team in the school’s history. NM State also had 12 players honored on
the College Sports Madness Independent Preseason All-Conference team and
11 players on the Phil Steele College Football Preview All-Independent team.
During the season, senior safety Davis Cazares was nominated as a Bulsworth
Trophy finalist, honoring the most outstanding collegiate football player who
began his career as a walk-on. Linebacker Clint Barnard would be named to
the Capital One Academic All-District VII first team. The Aggies would also
pick up three FBS Independent Player of the Week nods in 2013 under Martin, Cazares and Barnard on the defensive side and punter Cayle ChapmanBrown on special teams.
At the conclusion of the 2013 season, NM State would place five players on
the All-Independent Football team including Cazares, Trashaun Nixon, Austin
Franklin, Andy Cunningham and Davonte Wallace.
In 2012, Martin left his offensive coordinator position at NM State to take the
same position for Boston College out of the ACC. The Eagles ranked 47th in
the nation in passing offense, as Martin guided wide receiver Alex Amidon
and offensive tackle Emmett Cleary to All-ACC honors. Amidon finished the
season ranked 11th among all receivers in the country in receiving yards per
game (100.8). He ranked second among all ACC receivers in both receptions
per game (6.5) and receiving yards per game.
As the offensive coordinator for the Aggies in 2011, Martin helped NM State
rank 47th in the country in total offense and 26th in passing offense.
He helped guide the Aggies to a win
over Minnesota, the program’s first
win against a team from the Big Ten.
Under Martin, the Aggies had three
All-WAC selections in wide receiver
Taveon Rogers, offensive tackle Davonte Wallace and running back Kenny Turner. Quarterback Matt Christian led the Aggies with 2,158 yards
passing and 15 touchdowns in 2011.
With seven seasons under his belt as
the head coach at Kent State University and eight as the offensive coordinator, Martin was instrumental in
building a true football program at
the university. A total of 20 Golden
Flashes earned All-Mid-American
Conference accolades from 2007-10,
including Eugene Jarvis, who was
atop the active Football Bowl Subdivision running backs list with 3,722
career yards on the ground, and Brian Lainhart, whose 17 career interceptions was also tops among active
FBS players.

In 2010, Roosevelt Nix was named
the MAC Defensive Player of the Year
under Martin’s watch. Also under
Martin, four players were selected in
the NFL draft including Jameson Konz (2010 - 7th round, Seattle Seahawks),
Usama Young (2007 - 3rd round, New Orleans Saints), Jack Williams (2008
- 4th round, Denver Broncos) and Julian Edelman (2009 - 7th round, New
England Patriots), with Young becoming the sixth-highest pick in the history
of the program.
Over the past four years, Martin’s offense at Kent State recorded a remarkable 16,907 yards of total offense, averaging 422.6 yards per game during
that spanned including 26.3 points a game.
In December of 2006, Martin signed a four-year extension that kept him in
Blue and Gold through 2010. The extension rewarded a 2006 campaign that
saw Kent State pull off the fourth-largest turnaround in the nation, improving
by five wins over the previous year’s total.
Included in the performance was a five-game winning streak, including four
straight MAC victories - the Flashes’ longest conference streak ever. Furthermore, the nation’s 25th-ranked team in total defense in 2006, limited Miami
and Bowling Green to a combined 17 points as Kent State won road games
against the RedHawks and Falcons in the same season for the first time since
1972. Kent State saw five players earn All-MAC accolades.
In addition to his head coaching duties, Martin also served as quarterbacks’
coach and was the offensive coordinator for all but the 2009 season.
Martin is widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier quarterback mentors. His list of protégés includes three-time All-Conference USA selection and
current NFL passer David Garrard, record-setting CFL quarterback Marcus
Crandell and other pros Richard Alston and Joshua Cribbs, who both played
quarterback in college under Martin before switching positions in the NFL.

In 2005, Martin’s spread passing attack posted the third-highest yardage total
in school history while the team’s 15 touchdown passes were the sixth most in
a single year at Kent State. The Flashes also reached the 30-point mark three
times in 2005, running the total number of games with at least that many
points to 16 since 2003.
In Martin’s first season, the Golden Flashes posted a 5-6 overall record, winning their final four games for the program’s longest winning streak since
1976. The team also finished in fourth place in the MAC East Division with a
4-4 mark while producing three All-MAC players and two honorable mention
All-Americans.
Martin also handled the offensive play-calling duties and the unit responded to
his coaching, scoring 335 points and racking up 4,168 yards, the second- and
third-highest totals, respectively, in school history.
Under his guidance, the Flashes averaged 30.5 points per game, just the third
time in school history a team averaged 30 or more points. The team also set a
single-game scoring mark in its 69-17 win over Eastern Michigan Nov. 13. Four
times in 2004 the Flashes totaled more than 400 yards on offense, including
two games over 500.
Additionally, in two years tutoring All-MAC quarterback Joshua Cribbs, Martin
saw Cribbs develop into one of the top dual threats in the country. Always a
talented runner, Cribbs finished his career as the owner of KSU career records
for total offense, passing yardage, touchdowns, points and completions. He
also ranked fourth nationally in total offense and completed a school-record
64.5 percent of his passes. As a team, the Flashes had a completion rate of 62.8
percent, also a school record.
While his spread offensive style is his calling card, Martin revamped his defensive coaching staff and saw that unit go from ranking 12th of 14 teams in the
MAC in total defense in 2003 to first in the league in 2004. It marked the first
time since 1987 that the team led the MAC in total defense and just the second
time since joining the conference in 1951. Kent State also ranked 15th nationally in total defense.
Martin was named the school’s 19th head coach on March 1, 2004, replacing
Dean Pees. Martin joined the Kent State staff in January 2003 as offensive coordinator. After just one year on the staff, Martin made an instant impact on the
Golden Flashes’ offense. In its first season under Martin’s system, Kent State
averaged 26.8 points per game, the second-highest in the last 30 years, and
scored 30-or-more points in each of the final six games and did so in a schoolrecord eight games overall.
From 2002-04 Martin’s teams averaged nearly 30 points per game and posted
the highest offensive totals in back-to-back years in school history. From 200203 alone, scoring offense increased by 10 points, touchdowns grew from 24 to
40, total offense was up by more than 40 yards per game and passing yardage
increased by nearly 100 yards per game.
In 2004, that trend continued as the Flashes’ increased their scoring, touchdowns, passing yards and total yards per game.
Martin arrived at Kent State following 11 seasons at East Carolina University,
the last seven of which he was in charge of the team’s offense. He was at ECU
for all of Steve Logan’s tenure there, serving as the tight ends coach and special
teams coordinator for two seasons (1992-93), then another two years as wide
receivers coach (1994-95) before being promoted to offensive coordinator in
1996.
At East Carolina, Martin played a significant role in the development of quarterback David Garrard, who broke 28 school passing records and total offensive records from 1998-01. In addition, Martin coached the top three receivers
in ECU history. During Martin’s time at ECU, the team advanced to five bowl
games; the Liberty Bowl in 1994 and 1995, the GMAC (formerly Mobile Alabama) Bowl in 1999 and 2001 and the galleryfurniture.com Bowl in 2000.
