WYATT WOODSON KATELYN COPENHAVER n Friday, October 17, the Bearhawks had their first ever Homecoming dance. Approximately 100 students attended and had an awesome evening! There was a DJ who took student requests, arcade games, video games, and you could even play basketball! Generous parents and local businesses donated plenty of food, snacks, *Article written in past week. Details may have changed. This disease is on everyone’s mind, and it has some pretty crazy symp- toms: -Nausea and vomiting -(Bloody) Diarrhea -Red eyes -Raised rashes -Chest pain and coughing -Stomach pain -Severe weight loss -Bruising -Bleeding, usually from the eyes (people near death may bleed from other orifices, such as ears, nose and rectum) I will concede that these symptoms are frightening. That being said, I’m going to take it upon myself to make this disease a little less spooky. First of all, only eight Americans have been infected; two are currently in treatment within the States, and the others have recovered or died. But all the media blitz around this outbreak is making it out to be the next Spanish Flu. In reality, the disease is pretty hard to get unless you are working on or very near to a symptomatic carrier. Contrary to popular belief, Ebola doesn’t spread through casual contact. The disease is only spread via bodily fluids; e.g. blood, mucus, and sweat. Not only that, but these bodily fluids have to come in contact with an open wound, abrasion, or your face due to your mucus membranes. It is not airborne. The disease has also only spread so virulently in Western Africa because of the lack of local infrastructure and organization in a war-torn region. Nigeria, another African nation, had many cases but is now virtually Ebola-free. This Halloween, you should be more scared about getting black licorice than you should be about getting Ebola! YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED MADI PARSONS W AND DESTINY BOVAIR e received several queries from you guys on Mr. Bishop’s and Mr. Abraham’s Edmodo pages, the only place we look for your questions. We’ll answer some of those today, and since it’s almost Halloween...here you go! Q: My parents think I'm too old to go trick or treating! Suggestions? A: Say, “I won’t be this young forever, and you won’t need to buy dessert for a month! AND, I’ll be out of your hair for a night - c’mon!” and if they still say no, then I’m sorry, your parents are officially not cool. Q: Is it wrong to raid bowls of candy left out on porches by those who are unable or unwilling to give it out by hand? If there is no sign saying "please take one" is it stealing if you take more than one? A: It’s probably best to wait until later to get more than a couple pieces because there are other people that want candy, but If there isn’t a sign saying ‘take one’ and the trick or treating crowd is dying down then go hog wild. Q: Where is one of the best place to get costumes for Halloween? A: Okay, Halloween & More is THE BEST place to go for costumes, decorations, a good scare, anything and everything Halloween- no joke. Q: Is the bus that Principal Sutton rides on considered Bearforce One? A: Yes. A DIMMER UNIVERSE A TOKYO GHOUL YASEMIN OZBEK black hole is a cluster of matter that shrinks into a singularity and collapses on itself, becoming what’s known as a vacuum; usually formed by the destruction and collapsing of a star. Black holes draw in anything around it, including gases and light. It is believed that the presence of so many black holes is the reason new stars are not forming all the time in the universe; the black holes around galaxies are sucking up the hydrogen and helium around them. Scientists have also found that black holes are under the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich effect, or the SZ effect for short. The SZ effect is when high energy electrons obstruct the microwave background radiation of an object. Basically, black holes are emitting so much energy that gasses can not cool and condense to form baby stars, according to the new study conducted in Johns Hopkins University. Halloween Night Traditions O Chloe Jones and Michael Finkelstein n Halloween, different people do different things, depending on culture, tradition, and preference. Various activities are done on Halloween night that reflect our practices. We went around and asked a few people what they were doing this Halloween. “I’m staying at my house and handing out candy to the kids as a ghost that haunts the Ghost Walk. I live in the ‘dime house’ downtown.” ~ Sophia Miller “I’m going to the fair. That’s all I’m doing, that’s all I have planned!” ~ Abby Gerlits “I am going to do “Trick-or-Treat so Kids Can Eat” (An event where you collect canned goods so kids whose families can’t afford it can eat) ~ Taylor Hauser “I’m probably going trick-or-treating. You’re never too old to get free candy.” ~Sterling Baron “What I usually do on Fridays - I go to the movies on Friday. Since Jared quit trick or treating, I usually go to dinner at a friend’s house, or I go to the movies.” ~Mr. Kelly “I’m going to go trick or treating with my daughters in my neighborhood. My oldest daughter is going to dress up as a dragon, my middle daughter is going to be a dinosaur, my youngest daughter is going to be a spider, and I’m going to be a wizard. This is also the first year that I decorated, so I put up a big spider web in our front yard [Which you can see a beautiful picture of on Mr. Abraham’s Instagram, if you can find it].” ~Mr. Abraham “Go big or go home” - Some people are going big and some are staying home- what are you doing this Halloween? Whether you’re going trick-or-treating, spending an evening at home, or practicing your own traditions, Halloween is a time to get together, if anything, to get free candy, and to get a lil’ spooky. WALK AMONG GHOSTS JACK A SARA REBILLARD ction! Mystery! Drama! Supernatural! Horror! Tokyo Ghoul is by far my favorite of the 2014 releases. Its suspenseful take on mystery adventure draws you in for a darker type of anime. Something that lurks in the dark side gives out cookies. Poison cookies. However, Tokyo Ghoul is not for the faint of heart. You know whether or not you can handle horror, though. When a regular highschooler develops a crush on the cute girl in the coffee shop, the story begins. But not all is as it seems in Tokyo. Kaneki’s crush is a ghoul, a flesh-eating monster with immense power. When they both are caught in a horrible accident, Kanekikun’s fate changes overnight. Nobody wants to be a killer. DRESSING UP? EMILY COULTER H alloween is pretty much a national dress up party. Sweets, costumes, makeup, parties; the whole deal. But here’s the question you must ask yourself when dressing up: What will I wear? Zombie: Last year I went for the classic zombie, and it was really easy. I cut a couple holes in a tshirt and add some make-up under the eyes and…. Done– well, almost. Since I had some acrylic paint lying around I put my skills to use and added some “dried blood” around my mouth. Then “Now, just act like you normally do but in a all I had to do was moan and deeper voice” grunt for candy. Note: Zombie Photography Mollie Sullivan 2013 boyfriend not required. Struck by lightning: This year, I’ve decided to do something original (but not really). With the help of Google, I came across the idea to roll out of bed with burnt clothing and a wire umbrella, just like any other day. Of course the costume makes a lot more sense when you have someone with you who is dressed as a lightning bolt, so a lightning buddy is recommended. A Piñata: A piñata, really? Yes. Break out the scissors and craft paper, because a piñata is the way to go. Honestly, forget zombies, forget Harry Potter, forget everything else because this is it— the best of the best. I guarantee that had you dressed up like a piñata at the costume party I attended in fifth grade, you would have beat me and my dragon costume; although it probably would have been out of pity after we’d tried to beat you for the candy!
