This team consisted of Margaret Sloper, Joan Toomey, Angelia Bleach, Sally Lynch and Patricia Dunn (the average age of the team and the caddies was 63). The caddies are really part of the team as the players play 36 holes in one day and the caddies contribution is of great assistance. As our numbers are small if you are not in the team you are probably going to be a caddy. This year our Pennant team was awarded 'The Team of the Year' at the East Otago Pat Dunn, Sally Lynch, Joan Toomey, Angelia Bleach, Margaret Sloper Community Sports Awards. Well done to every one involved. If anyone is interested in playing golf they are only too happy to get you started. Sam Clulee Local boy Sam Clulee has just been away at the National 'Hatch Cup' Hockey Tournament in Palmerston North where he played for the Otago Team. Sam started playing field hockey last year as goalie and was named in the team then also. The team placed 12th in 2013 and this year they placed 6th Louise Ritchie overall. The team had a draw in the quarter finals and lost in a shootout, then won the next game which was also a draw with a shootout. Sam enjoys playing goalie and hopes to continue with Under 15 next year. Sam was named Otago Waikouaiti local runner up in Design Competition MVP 'Most Improved Player' at the tournament. Sam would like Jennifer Mandli-Roger’s bag design titled ‘Eco As’ came out runner up in The to thank his sponsor – Warehouse’s inaugural competition to create an eco-inspired design for its Waikouaiti Auto & Engineering. reusable bags. Ms Mandli-Roger who has a background in creative directing was shopping online one morning and saw the competition being advertised on The Warehouse website. “I was at home with the flu and thought I would give it a go,” she said. “I didn’t think I had a shot at winning so when I got the phone call saying I was runner up, I was over the moon.” Ms Mandli-Roger has won a $300 The Warehouse gift card and the winner of the competition, Graedon Parker will have his winning sketch printed onto thousands of reusable bags that will be available for sale in all 92 The Warehouse stores by early next year. The designs were judged by a panel including The Warehouse CEO Simon Turner, The Warehouse General Manager for Marketing, Lorraine Breheny and The Warehouse Environment Support Manager, Greg Nelson. November 2014 POWA Community News Page 11 Hi everyone, Welcome to what is hopefully my last report for the Fire Service. Calls since last report: 1. Scrub fire off Horse range Road. Quite a number of appliances and tankers attended this one including Palmerston, Waikouaiti, Weston, Hampden, Kakanui and other Rural Fire units. 2. Because the above fire left the area rather bare of emergency response our Fire Appliance and a crew were turned out to sit at Palmerston Station to maintain the Fire Services minimum response time in case of another emergency. 3. Scrub Fire for our Tanker only to back up Waitati VFB. 4. Scrub Fire Karitane It’s been back to normal training and exercises mostly concentrated on portable pump work, Breathing Apparatus and Hose running. Also all our hoses were tested during the month. Every year throughout New Zealand all hose is tested to 20% above normal operating to ensure that it does not fail during an emergency. One member has successfully completed a seven day recruit’s course in Dunedin to put the finishing touches on the training he has had within the Brigade. This is the second time that he has done this as he re-joined the Brigade after several years working overseas. Several members did some joint training with Palmerston St Johns and it was well received. Early November the Fire Service is interviewing for the Chief Fire Officer position. Although this is a non-paid position the CFO holds a lot of power under the Fire Service Act 1975 so the appointment is by the New Zealand Fire Service and not by the Brigade. With the coming of the B-B-Q season please make sure your equipment is clean before lighting. Please take care with children around and don’t mix cooking and excessive alcohol consumption. While I was away recently in Christchurch I was impressed at some of the younger members who are stepping up and organising, coordinating and communicating. It’s nice to get a phone call “Hi Boss, This is what has happened, this is what I have organised, do you agree?” For all that the older generation say of the younger ones I feel the Brigade has some great future leaders in its ranks. We can supply Fire Safety products like smoke alarms, small fire extinguishers and fire blankets. As usual if you want any more information (not relating to current emergencies) feel free to call in at the Fire Station any Wednesday night between 7.30 and 8.30 pm or ring 465 7386 during that time . Cheers, Anthony Nally, District Chief Fire Officer East Otago Arts and Crafts Exhibitiion The Arts and Crafts Exhibition was held this year in the Community Centre at Palmerston to coincide with the weekend of celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the town. Other events that took place that day were the Kelly's Canter, Paddy's market and tree planting. The exhibition was very well supported by all the clubs, Puketapu Patchwork, Happy Hands , Spinners and Weavers, Woodturners, Camera Club, East Otago Art Group, Sandra Chapman the leaded glass maker, Peter Gregory. Do not wait for your mammogram to have this problem checked. Open Day Waikouaiti – A Township of Firsts The Town Garden is looking very beautiful at this time of the year with the rhododendrons in flower and the roses in heavy bud. It is well worth a visit. While there, why not have a read of the history of the district recorded there. Maori people have lived in the area for centuries. Europeans visited the Otago coast sporadically from the time of Captain Cook but the period around 1840 marks the European settlement of the area. Over recent months I have written of the families who came on the Magnet, the 175th anniversary of their arrival being celebrated early next year. Thank you November 2014 POWA Community News Waikouaiti Police Community Report On the 1st October 2014 Police attended a minor domestic dispute at a Hawkesbury Village address. The male party was removed from the address for the evening, no further action was required by Police. On the 2nd October 2014 Waikouaiti Police dealt with the burglary of a Burraness Street, Palmerston address. Due to information received by a member of the public three juvenile boys were located, spoken too and all the stolen property was recovered and returned to its owner. All three boys have been referred to Oamaru Youth Aid. Without the information from the witness being relayed to Police this offence would likely be unsolved. No matter how small that piece of information may seem to you, it could just the piece we need to track down the offenders. In the early hours of the 12th October 2014 Police were called to a young female walking in the middle of State Highway One, near Goodwood. The 16 year old female was located before any harm came to her and she was returned home to her parents in Oamaru. On the 14th October 2014 Police attended a non injury vehicle accident on State Highway One, Waikouaiti. The local female driver was issued with several infringement notices in relation to this incident. Also on the 14th October Waikouaiti Police attended an incident in the Kimberly Rest Home Car Park, Ronaldsay Street, Palmerston where a vehicle was badly damaged. Any information regarding this incident would be greatly appreciated. On the 17th October 2014 a report was received that damage had been done to a private fence and recently planted plants pulled out at a Johnny Johns Drive, Hawkesbury Village address. Wilful damage is such a pointless crime, but can have major effects on its victims. Think before you act. Waikouaiti Police are also actively patrolling State Highway One and all the townships in our area for seat belt compliance, graduated licence breaches, drunk and drugged drivers and warrant of fitness and registration breaches. Please keep your vehicle up to date, comply with your licence restrictions and use the courtesy buses that are provided at our local hotels. That's all for this month, take care. In 1840, when the Rev Watkins arrived, he was the first missionary in the South Island and the Mission House at Waikouaiti was the first such building. Watkins conducted the first Christian marriage in Otago. St John’s Church in Waikouaiti was the first Anglican Church built in Otago and Southland and is the oldest one still in use. The first European children in Otago were born here in Waikouaiti. Waikouaiti’s fortunes have fluctuated in the intervening years but we have a long and proud history in New Zealand. The museum is looking for new volunteers to man the museum counter and information centre. If you are able to spend a couple of hours a month with us, we would be very grateful. Training will be given. Our volunteers do a fantastic job and are to be congratulated, but when we are short, a few people are obliged to work a lot of hours. Speed was a contributing factor to this collision. The local male driver has been charged with Careless Driving and will appear in the Dunedin District Court in November. They were the first selected group of emigrants to land in the South Island when they came in 1840. They established the farm at Matanaka while working for Johnny Jones. The homestead at Matanaka was the first large dwelling house built in the South Island. Matanaka has the oldest complex of farm buildings in Otago. Waikouaiti had the first signs of organised farm cultivation, and the first crops of any size between Nelson and Bluff were grown here. The first large group of cattle, horses and sheep to arrive in the South Island were landed on Waikouaiti Beach. The first sheep to be shorn in the South Island was shorn at Waikouaiti. A ruby pear tree, planted in 1847 and surviving at Cherry Farm is believed to be the oldest fruit tree in the South Island. JP’s contribution to the community through his role in the police force and the Waikouaiti Primary School Board of Trustees is very much appreciated. This along with the work both he and Eve have undertaken with the Blue Light Disco for the young ones and Eve’s work on the volunteer fire brigade has shown their commitment to the community over the last decade. I have no doubt JP and Eve will serve their new community with as much intent and commitment as they have shown to ours. JP has indicated it is likely he will take up his new role late November early December so please take the opportunity to show your appreciation of their service to our community prior to their departure. They are already Phone 465 7999 / 0800wkfish avoid into reconstruction and Bob 1 and Bob 2 (John and Darryl) and their team of the wait electricians, plumbers and so on have been creating lots of questions from children which they answer for us daily. We are documenting the changes and excitedly await their next moves! This week we received our brand new drinking fountains from “For Everyone” who are supported by Ritchie McCaw, Ali Williams and Dan Carter. They look fabulous and even have a facility to refill drink-bottles on the side! We are feeling very flash … and hydrated! The senior children participated in their Athletics day in Palmerston this week and plenty of tired and happy faces returned after a very successful and effortfilled day. All participated strongly and we look forward to sending many children on to represent the school at the Zone Athletics. Junior children participate in their day later in November. We are preparing frantically for our School Fair on Sunday 2nd November, and by the time this issue is delivered we hope that you had a great, fun-filled day with us and put in lots of bids on our Trade Me auction of goodies and the Silent Auction at the Fair! East Otago Health Doctors Update Brass Band Concert By Colleen Mackay Saturday 7th March 2015 East Otago Events Centre In the last review, you will have read about Dr Chris Mulholland and Dr Kate Dixon who started working in the practice from late August. This has taken a lot of pressure off our previously overloaded nurses and doctors. It has made a huge difference to our ability to meet the needs of our patients, such as appointments readily available normally on the day you phone, scripts done and sent to the pharmacy the same day and referrals done within a short time of your visit. We are enjoying having the fresh input of ideas into the practice they have brought and regular clinical meetings have seen a great wealth of information and knowledge being shared by all nurses and doctors. This is very beneficial in the ongoing care of our patients. Waikouaiti Library Friday 28th November, 6.30-7.30pm FREE NHNZ Film Screening: Eco Arc (part of the “Megastructures” series) Turning Taiwan’s trash into a treasure. The nine-story Eco Ark Pavilion is built largely from recycled polythene bottles, weighs 50% less than a conventional building, yet is strong enough to withstand the forces of nature, including fire. (duration: 50 mins) Although Chris and Kate leave in January to return to Scotland, we are thrilled to tell you that Dr Catherine Brown will join us in January for 6 months. Catherine is a colleague of theirs and has heard from them of the positive experience they have had, working and living in East Otago. Southlink are working hard on securing a permanent doctor and we may have more news on this, next month. E-COPY Newsletter stickers now available for your letterbox. Pest management involves reducing numbers of possums, rats, rabbits, hares, cats, ferrets and stoats at the lagoon but on farmland, goats, pigs and deer could probably be added to the list in some places. The problem for us is that if we reduce a population of one species then another will rise up and take its place, particularly as the lagoon is not an enclosed area. Ways of managing pest numbers on farms mainly involve trapping and shooting. We have a few traps in selected places on the lagoon and also carry out an egg pricking programme to help keep geese numbers down. The listed pests have a major impact on bird populations as recent work on the peninsula to reduce pest numbers has shown. Funding for pest control on private land is available through the Biodiversity Condition Fund. COMPLETE SPRAYING SERVICE Weed pests require prompt and regular control. This can be a time consuming and expensive operation. Climbing weeds can smother native trees, and weeds that form a dense mat on the ground will prevent native seeds from geminating. Before any new planting all weeds should be removed from the site, mulch if possible. Take care if using herbicides as native plants are very sensitive. Replant any areas which open up and control weeds, especially during spring and summer, at an early stage as this makes control much easier. A plea for anyone with spare time over the summer to take some time to clear long grass from around our plants, every little bit helps. It can be quite relaxing!!! Finally, some of you may have noticed that both culvert covers have been removed. We will leave the lagoon open like this and only replace the covers when the water level is very high or getting too low. We are hoping to encourage overall greater water exchange and ask that individuals don’t interfere, as has happened in the past. If you have any concerns at any time in relation to the lagoon please contact me. Shirley McKewen Chair East Otago Events Centre Last month began with the East Otago Community Sports Awards in which our area was well represented by local people who have excelled in various sports throughout the year. The Centre is frequently the venue of choice by different sporting bodies, whether they are playing in the auditorium or holding meetings. The Otago Volts met here last month as did the Rodeo Club and Gymnastics and the Indoor Bowls club’s AGM was its last meeting of the season until next year. Other types of organizations also enjoy the Centre’s comfortable facilities. Tumai Ora held a ‘Safe Driving’ session in the John Brown room. With the coming of spring and some warmer weather October saw an exciting new development at the Events Centre. The East Otago Market Inc. took place here on Saturday morning at Labour Weekend from 9.00Editor 12.00. It was situated in the carpark and garden area behind the building. There were a number of stalls and many people came to enjoy what they had to offer and they were fortunate to have beautiful, settled weather for this initial experience. The market will be meeting fortnightly from now on so we wish them well and look forward to supporting them too. Eva Hammond (Secretary) E.O.E.C. Management Committee 465 7790 Gardener Wanted!
