Issue No 33, 29th October, 2014 Reflection: All Saints Day – Saturday 1st November All Saints Day, the day on which Catholics celebrate all the saints, known and unknown, is a surprisingly old feast. It arose out of the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their martyrdom. When martyrdoms increased during the persecutions of the late Roman Empire, local dioceses instituted a common feast day in order to ensure that all martyrs, known and unknown, were properly honoured. Question: Is All Saints Day a Holy Day of Obligation? Answer: All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation. However, when it falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated (temporarily waive). All Souls Day – Sunday 2nd November The importance of our College Symbols provides a clear message for all our students. Last week at the Investiture of our College Prefects I made a connection to the Year 12 Farewell ceremony where we made reference to significance symbols. Following is an extract of my speech to the College community: “During the Year 12 Farewell Assembly, four symbols became the focal point for the leadership of the College…The four symbols represent who we are and what we stand for. The College Yearbook is a symbol of our evolving history, our long traditions and our connectedness to this great College. It is here that our story, your story, remains as part of the history of the College. The EREA Charter – the symbol of our connection to the wider community of the Christian Brothers and the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice. A charism that is centred around the touchstones of Liberating Education, Inclusive Community, Gospel Spirituality and Justice and Solidarity. The St. Dominic’s College Banner symbolises a life of development, of challenges and a place where students are nurtured into young men. Young men who are able to proudly take their place in society and be the foundation for the future St. Dominic’s boys. And finally, the College Candle the symbol for carrying our light to illuminate the world with Jesus by our side. It is through Jesus that we become true witness of our faith and it is by following the Lords light, that our light can shine brightly alongside the light of our Lord. These symbols are now returned to our assembly and it is the responsibility of the elected Prefects to take up their mantle as custodians of all that is St. Dominic’s and what it means to be a faithful follower of our Lord, Jesus Christ”. Following the explanation of the symbols, there was a clear message for not only the elected Prefects but for all students… “I left the Class of 2014 with the following words of Ralph Waldo Emerson who stated: “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail…” I challenge all Year 12 to demonstrate their leadership qualities in this, their last year of compulsory schooling and you too are encouraged to take up the mantle and continue to make this a great College where all are welcome and encouraged to be the best person they can be. Let your light shine so that others will follow. Finally I would like to Congratulate you once again on your election and I leave you with the words of Michael Jordan – “Earn your leadership every day”. There is a lot of hard work ahead of you so make sure you earn your leadership as we work together each and every day during the next 12 months. Let us seize the day together”. As we move into the final weeks of the year let us not drop the baton and realise that our work is never at an end if we are to be the best person we can be. Let us all continue to seize the day. I would to thank four young men from Year 7 - Thomas Corey, Benjamin Farmer, Luka Livaja and Benjamin Mamo who assisted at both the Year 12 Farewell Assembly and now at the Investiture of our 2015 Prefects. All these boys were former students of the school and were more than willing to show their gratitude to the school and to the many wonderful teachers who had helped form and guide them during those significant primary school days. With both teams undefeated so far there was plenty to play 1st XI for. Coach Jansz blooded a new manager for the game with Mr V started off slowly but gradually worked their way through the innings Fitsemanu absent. Mr.Mackinnon was given the duties with Jansz feeling he had served his apprenticeship in Year 7 cricket. St Doms with Paul Chester and Kobe Carroll keeping the score board ticking over. But a lack of boundaries and poor running between the wickets Eastwood saw St.Doms only make 104. Coach Jansz was far from happy with this score and let his boys know they needed a big effort in the field to make up for it. The bowlers did a great job to begin with, with Ryan Fletcher tying down an end whilst the damage was being done at the other. Dylan Apicella responded to some tactical instruction from his former Year 7 mentor Mr.Mackinnon tearing apart the middle order with some ferocious bowling at the rib cages of the opposition. Captain Andrew Hazard finished off the tail with his flighty off spin. This great bowling effort along with some outstanding fielding restricted Eastwood to 74 all out giving St Doms a 30 run victory. Well done to coach Jansz and the boys on an inspiring victory. 2nd XI V Eastwood On this marvellous day for cricket out at Meadowbank Reserve, Captain O’Rielly won his third consecutive toss and elected a bat. We looked to get on top early with a stunning quick fire 27 off the willow by Nicholas Sayer. However this and Nicholas Hocking’s massive six onto the road was all to report of in our meagre batting total of 8/69. Our bowling attack has much aggression, variety and poise but the runs were too few to defend on this occasion. St Dominic’s 2nd grade is a well balanced side with great potential and so stay tuned for future rounds of the MCS competition. rd 3 Trained well XI BYE Waiting for Super Coach Pollock to return all refreshed After finally winning the toss, Trent Weir sent his troops into bat against Eastwood. Doms looked sharp and ran up a strong 115 in 20 overs. Trent was a solid performer hitting 45. Then the clouds Year 9 began to roll in. In the 15th over the rain began and distant thunder could be heard. Some even thought Christmas had come early, with a brief appearance from Santa. Unfortunately the gifts only went one way. By the 18th over the heavens had opened and unfor- Opens V Eastwood tunately, in controversial circumstances the game called off. A draw has been called, for now. By the way, Eastwood were only on 57 after 18 overs. Thanks to Mr Rawding for again paying a visit and donating a small gift to the manager. Year 7 V Eastwood Year 7 washed out ... Unhappy coach.
