Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle: Made in the Great War Friday 26 September Six years ago, Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with Bellowhead, bought a violin. The label inside gave the date 1915 and the name Richard S. Howard. Research revealed that it had been made by a some-time music hall performer from Leeds called Richard Spencer Howard. When he was conscripted to fight in World War I, his violin had been left unfinished in his workshop. The pieces of the fiddle lay in a manila envelope for nine decades until they made their way into the hands of luthier, Roger Claridge. over ninety years after Richard began working on the fiddle it was finished and placed in Roger’s shop. To mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, Sam has collaborated with story-teller Hugh Lupton, fellow Bellowhead band mate Paul Sartin and concertina player Rob Harbron to create a music/spoken word/film performance based on this story, featuring on stage the actual fiddle made by Richard Howard. 7.30pm at the Civic Tickets £14/£12 concessions. For most people in Britain, Elvis Presley was a legendary figure who only existed in films, on television and on record. only once did he set foot on British soil and that was in the dead of night en route from Germany back to the USA. The “original” Elvis act was based on African American performers including Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Arthur “Big Boy” Cruddup. Thirty five years after his death, the fascination with Elvis lives on through the legions of impersonators or “Tribute Artists” as they are now known. A worldwide phenomenon, Elvis Tribute Artists, perform regularly in pubs, clubs and theatres up and down the British Isles.
