Rising Romance
confirmed for Mackinnon
Rising Romance (NZ) (Ekraar) lines up in the Gr.1 Mackinnon Stakes tomorrow.
R
ising Romance (NZ) (Ekraar) will make one more
appearance at the Melbourne spring carnival.
Co-trainer Donna Logan has confirmed a start in
Saturday’s $A1 million Gr.1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at
Flemington with James McDonald to again take the mount.
“Initially I was [hoping to be back in New Zealand]
because we planned to come and have a crack at the
Caulfield Cup and go home, but the way she pulled up out of
the race there’s no reason not to go forward,” said Logan.
“She’s bright and well and I’m very pleased with how she
pulled up. I’m thinking, ‘Oh, well, if that’s the case we might
push on’.
“She actually galloped on Saturday because she had
gained quite a bit of weight ... Her constitution is amazing, so
realistically when you’ve got a horse thriving like that it would
be silly to head home and miss a race like this.
“Coming back [to 2000 metres] is a bit of a question
mark, obviously. I think [Rising Romance is] capable of it and
without a sprint in her feet she should cope with that. It’s
going to be a bit of a pressure race, so you’re going to have to
be hard and fit for it, which she will be.”
Rising Romance was a gallant second behind the Japanese
raider Admire Rakti (Heart’s Cry) in the Gr.1 Caulfield Cup and
she has progressed well in the interim.

stablemate Telepathic (NZ) (Mossman), who will be in action
on Melbourne Cup day.
“There’s a nice fillies and mares race at Flemington for her,”
Logan said.
She was referring to the $A200,000 Gr.3 Hong Kong
Jockey Club Stakes (1400m).
Placed in the Gr.3 Rough Habit Plate during a Queensland
winter carnival campaign, Telepathic finished second over
1200 metres when resuming at Randwick earlier this month.
“I’m very happy with both horses – they are really thriving,”
Logan said.

One winner Costume (NZ) (Savabeel) is
worthy of a tilt at Saturday’s $A1 million
Gr.1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington,
but isn’t sure just how the Savabeel mare
will measure up.
Costume flew to Melbourne on
Wednesday night and had a light trot
and canter at Flemington on Thursday
morning.
“She had a good flight over. She
travelled well and seems bright,”
Rogerson said.
“She did all her fast work at home so
she’ll just do a bit of light work leading
up to the Mackinnon.
“She’s drawn nicely in barrier two, but
she’ll still get back a bit. It’s a good field
with some really nice horses in there,
some that raced in the Cox Plate and
Donna Logan’s horse Rising Romance
that ran second in the Caulfield Cup.
“We know Costume can run good
time and she did that both times in her
weight-for-age wins in New Zealand, but
it’s hard to weigh up the form and know
just how she’ll go. But I am very happy

Criterion to back up in Mackinnon
Stakes
Criterion (NZ) (Sebring) will get
another chance to claim a Group One win
this spring with the four-year-old to run
in the Mackinnon Stakes ahead of a likely
trip to Hong Kong.
A dual Group One winner of the
Rosehill Guineas and the Australian
Derby, Criterion pulled up so well after
his luckless seventh in the Cox Plate,
trainer David Payne said he had no
hesitation about the quick back-up into
Saturday’s Mackinnon (2000m).

Laing duo fit for Derby
Trainer Robbie Laing has not given up
on back-to-back Victoria Derby wins.
Laing won last year’s Victoria Derby
with the now-retired Polanski (Rakti)
and has Cuban Fighter (Teofilo) and The
Mighty Jrod (NZ) (Pentire), two of the
outsiders, in Saturday’s edition of the
2500m feature at Flemington.
Group One winner Hampton Court
(Redoute’s Choice) is the dominant
favourite to give Gai Waterhouse her
second Victoria Derby, almost 20 years
after Nothin’ Leica Dane (Danehill).
“They don’t have the dominant form
of Polanski but they can stay,” Laing said
of his duo.
“They’re very fit. They have worked
extremely well since their last runs and
when others are getting tired, they’ll be

Bolton is hoping success at his home
meeting on Thursday will be a forerunner
to a major victory in Australia this
weekend.
He has enjoyed a good run of form
with his small Taranaki stable and the win
of Elvis (NZ) (Road To Rock) at Trentham
last Saturday was followed up by the
maiden triumph of Sweet Magnus
(Magnus) at the Pukekura Raceway.
Bolton will be at Flemington on
Saturday to watch his in-form Neena
Rock (Fastnet Rock) take on the top
mares in the $A500,000 Gr.1 Myer Classic
(1600m).
“I’m looking forward to it and she
deserves her chance at it,” he said.
Trained for him by John Sargent, the
daughter of Fastnet Rock placed in her
first two Sydney starts before she won
the Gr.3 Angst Stakes at Randwick.
Back on the home front, Bolton’s

New Melbourne Cup outfit for
Precedence
Veteran stayer Precedence (NZ)
(Zabeel) will have a new set of colours
when he runs in his fourth, and probably
last, Melbourne Cup.
Dato Tan Chin Nam’s familiar black
and white checks will be replaced by the
different shades of Irish green of coowner Sir Patrick Hogan who has bred
many Cup winners but never had one in
his colours.
After missing out on a 2013 Cup start
as the 25th horse in the ballot order for
the field of 24, Precedence is safely in this
year and has recovered from an injury
scare.
The gelding was cut in a scrimmage
in last week’s Moonee Valley Cup.
“He seems fine now and will have a
gallop on Saturday morning,” Dato Tan’s
racing manager Duncan Ramage said.
“He has had three goes at the Cup
in Dato’s colours so this time he goes
around in Sir Patrick’s.”
A Cup win would also move
Precedence’s sire Zabeel within one of his
own sire Sir Tristram’s Group One record.
Sir Tristram produced 45 individual
Group One winners while Zabeel, who
was retired from active duty at Hogan’s
Cambridge Stud last year, sits on 43.

Porotene Park (NZ) (Thorn Park)
will be a regular visitor to the north
in the coming weeks if she runs up to
trainer Rob Patterson’s expectations this
weekend.
A dual stakes placegetter as a threeyear-old last season, the Taranaki mare
will begin her future Group race quest at
Awapuni on Saturday in the Listed Ricoh
Feilding Gold Cup.
She has had three runs to fit her for
the step up to a middle distance with a
sprint defeat of the capable Percy (NZ)
(Sir Percy) two runs back followed by a
late finish at Hawera to dead-heat for
second over 1600 metres.
“She’s done well and she trialled up
really nicely at Waverley last week so it’s

Gollan pair to kick off at Doomben
A lack of suitable races will result in
smart Brisbane stayers Brave Ali (NZ)
(O’Reilly) and Amexed (NZ) (Pentire)
being given short summer campaigns.
The pair, who are both resuming, will
be among four runners for trainer Tony
Gollan in the Padua College Handicap
(1350m) at Doomben on Saturday.
The duo both performed admirably
during this year’s Brisbane winter
carnival where Brave Ali won three races
including the Ipswich Cup and Listed Tails
Stakes.
Amexed showed his class by winning
the Gr.3 Rough Habit Plate and running
an unlucky fifth in the Queensland Derby.
While Saturday’s race is short of the
pair’s preferred distance range, Gollan
hopes it will provide a guide to their

Guineas hopeful paying her own way
The connections of Dramatist (NZ)
(Librettist) don’t have to dig too deeply
for the filly’s late inclusion in next
month’s Gr.1 NZB 1000 Guineas.
Pearl Series success has swelled the
coffers and trainer David Greene, who
shares in the ownership of the threeyear-old, said the syndicate were keen to
have a crack at the Christchurch feature.
“She’s earned something like $41,000
odd in stakes now so we’re treating some
of it as bonus money.
“We’ve looked at it and if we go
ahead she will probably have one more
run before the Guineas.”
Greene has decided on an unusual
lead-up to Riccarton, but one that
timing-wise fits in well being 13 days
ahead of the Christchurch classic. Full

Hong Kong chasing Kiwi star
Hong Kong is keen to see the star
Singapore galloper Spalato (NZ) (Elusive
City) in action at Sha Tin.
The unbeaten New Zealand-bred
and owned five-year-old has been
invited to contest the Gr.2 BOCHK Wealth
Management Jockey Club Sprint (1200m)
on November 23.
Trained by John O’Hara, Spalato has
won all of his six starts at Kranji, including
two at the top level – the Patron’s Bowl in
June and the Singapore Derby in July.
Following a two month break, he has
returned to win his two latest starts over
1200 metres by wide margins.
Captain Cook for Puccini
Puccini (NZ) (Encosta de Lago) is
likely to be back in Group One company
for his next assignment.
A return trip to Trentham is planned
for the Captain Cook Stakes following his
success in last Saturday’s Gr.3 Thompson
Handicap.
That represented a turnaround in
Puccini’s fortunes after his failure to settle
when beaten in the Gr.1 Spring Classic at
his previous start.
The New Zealand Derby winner raced
more kindly in the Thompson and came
with a sustained finish from off the pace
to win for the seventh time in his 20-start
career.
“He didn’t end up quite as handy as
we thought, but that probably did the
horse good and he relaxed,” co-trainer
Jacob McKay said. “Good horses know
where the line is.”
Silverdale (NZ) (Castledale)
Tauranga test for Silverdale

(Castledale) will tune up for the Gr.2
Coupland’s Bakeries Mile at Riccarton
when he contests Saturday’s Genera
Genus Gallop (1300m) at Tauranga.
Trainer Stephen Autridge has the
five-year-old Castledale gelding in prime
order for his final lead up to the Riccarton
feature on November 12, his target race
which he will go into fourth-up.
The Group Two performer is
assured of a start, but Autridge wants
to see another bold performance as a
confidence booster for the trip south.
“If he put in an average one and we
couldn’t work out why, we’d be thinking
twice about going down, but we’d like to
think that won’t happen,” Autridge said.
“We’d love him to win again this
weekend, but the question marks are
there. His right-handed form is nowhere
as good as his left-handed form and we’d
rather have the track better than worse.
“But I can see him sitting back oneoff, peeling out and if he’s on his game

Cup on past southern visits, Nashville
owes his trainers as he’s the reason that
stablemate Benzini (Tale of the Cat) won’t
be making the trip for the Coupland’s.
“He kicked him in the paddock –
these things happen and it’s not a major,”
Bull said. “He’ll be out for three weeks
and then we’ll get him ready for the

Oaks a Choice long-term goal
Lightly-tried Mastercraftsman filly
Choice (NZ) will be freshened before
she resumes her promising career on her
home track.
“I’ll run her here on December 4 and
then in the Eulogy Stakes nine days later,”
New Plymouth trainer Rob Patterson
said.
“She won’t run below a mile after that
and the goal this season is to get her to
the Oaks. She’s a lovely filly and all she
wants to do is stay.”
Runner-up in her only juvenile
appearance, Choice broke her maiden
at Woodville before she finished second
to Avisto (NZ) (Tavistock) in the Listed
Soliloquy Stakes. She then jarred up
when out of the money at Trentham last
weekend.
“She’s still immature and she’s
never galloped on a hard track before,”
Patterson said.

Weregoingtogetcha to Awapuni
A minor setback has forced a change
of plans for Weregoingtogetcha (Testa
Rossa).
The Group-performed four-yearold won at Hawera earlier this month
to set up a crack at the Gr.3 Thompson
Handicap, but trainer David Hayes erred
on the side of caution and bypassed the
Trentham feature.
“We’ve had a virus through the yard
and he coughed a couple of times so we
played it safe,” he said.
“He’s well now and there’s a Rating 85
mile at Awapuni on November 11 for him
– he should be hard to beat there.”
The Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes at
Trentham on December 6 is a possible
target for Weregoingtogetcha with a
primary focus of having the Testa Rossa
entire at his peak later in the month.
“I want him fighting fit for the
Christmas carnival at Ellerslie – I wouldn’t
be afraid to have a go at the Zabeel
Classic, but we have to get his rating
points up,” Hayes said.
Special Draw ready to resume
Talented Taranaki sprinter Special
Draw (NZ) (Falkirk) is close to a return to
the races.
The multiple black type placegetter’s
career has been punctuated by foot
issues and her spring preparation was
halted following a bleeding attack at
Otaki.
“She’ll kick off in a couple of weeks
at Awapuni in an open 1200 and she’s
probably the best she’s ever been,” cotrainer Chris Bothwell said.
Special Draw has won three of her 16
starts and has been placed at Listed level
in the Levin Stakes, Lightning and Flying

and the Group One performer has again
been sidelined.
The lightly-tried six-year-old is facing
a lengthy spell after he was diagnosed
with a fetlock problem following his

Margin Trader’s stocks rise
Michael Moroney unveiled
a promising type at Bendigo on
Wednesday in the New Zealand-bred
Margin Trader (NZ) (Tavistock).
A $170,000 Karaka purchase by
Tavistock from Might and Power’s family,
the three-year-old was originally sent
to the Melbourne arm of Moroney’s
operation with a classic goal in mind.
“He has always showed us a lot of
ability,” said stable representative Matt
Hoysted. “He came over from New
Zealand for the (Victoria) Derby, but he
got a bit colty and we had to geld him.
“He did a lot wrong today, but you
can see the improvement there. He is just
a big baby, but in six months’ time we will
see the best of him.”
Rider Dwayne Dunn said he was
surprised at how quickly Margin Trader
responded when asked for a serious
effort.
“He has a lot of education to come
that will improve him again, but he
caught me by surprise just how quickly
he picked them up.”
