Politicians seek the help
of builders as civic polls
approach nearer

VASHI: The unexpected results of the
just recently concluded
assembly elections
have made the politicians of Navi Mumbai
work out new tactics to
adopt during the civic
elections which are
just a few months
away. One of the tactics these politicians
have come up with is
that of targeting the
city builders to amass
revenue from them to
enable them fight the
elections in a big way.
The builders are
feeling pressurized by
these politicians. Those
builders particularly
who depend heavily on
civic body to pursue
their business are unable to refuse to part
with the sum demanded by the politicos.
They just cannot afford
to displease these politicians who can be of
great use to these
builders if they manage to win seats in the
civic body.

Since the civic elections are just round the
corner, the builders
have already started
receiving phone calls
The politicians are
of the opinion that
these builders have a
huge stock of black
money and hence it
shouldn’t be a big deal
for them to part with

phase in their business
are in a state of panic
Taking oath to
remove corruption
since they are unable
to decide as to how to
deal with these politicos and how to convince them about the
horrible situations they
are in as far as their
business is concerned.
Those builders, who
have not yet been contacted by the politicos,
keep wishing that they
don’t receive calls from
them and asked to part
with their hard-earned
money.
It is a common
knowledge that builders and politicians are
mutually dependent
and the need of builders’ help is particularly felt by the politicians during the time
of elections. The builders also need the cooperation of the elected
politicians after the
election period. In the
past, many elections
have been won by the
politicians by depending heavily on builders’
money and once they
won the elections they

the ticketless

has decided to act
tough with ticketless
travelers. It has
conduct special
campaigns against
such way farers and
extracted fines
amounting to Rs 5
lakhs
during
the last
9
months
alone.
NMMT
has a
fleet of
360
buses
which
includes
280
ordinary and 90 mini
buses. In addition,
there are 70 air
conditioned luxury
buses which together
run on 44 routes.
Number of vehicles
apart, the undertaking has been suffering
losses day after day,
mainly because of
mismanagement.
Maintenance is poor
and cleanliness is
lacking. That has
been putting off rather
than attracting
passengers. That is
only a part of the
story. The other part
is that the undertaking has been facing
competition from
several sister organi-
zations – BEST, ST
and KDMT, to name
only a few. These
undertakings have
been able to wean a
substantial part of its
patrons with their
prompt services.
May be, NMMT is
able to put up a better
show in the days to
come.

Electricity workers offer dharna

VASHI: Maharashtra
State Electricity Workers Federation organized a dharna in front
of the company’s Vashi
circle office on Thursday. They were demanding the implementation of their long
pending demands.
Their charter of demands includes –
1. Filling up of
vacant posts which has
been pending since
2005
2. Many employees who have not been
given promotions for
the last almost 20 years
or more should be given promotions at once.
3. Higher grades
to those who possess
higher qualifications.
Where no suitable vacancies exist for them,
new vacancies should be
created to accommodate them.
4. About 100 persons working as Operators for the last over 3
years should be given
promotions.
The agitation was
conducted in all the seven zones spread across
the state. The agitation
in Vashi was led by
Krishna Bhoir, Vithal
Patil, Babasaheb Patange and Dilip Patil.

Cyclone affects vegetable prices

NAVI MUMBAI: Cyclone ‘Nilofar’, which is
looming over the Arabian Sea, may
keep the city’s
maximum
temperature
below normal.
The easterly
winds blowing strong,
making the
morning
pleasant and
with the humidity level less too has
brought in the much
needed relief from October heat and relief from
the roaring vegetable
prices.
With a steady flow of
vegetables from cross
region, the rates of vegetable have come down,
says traders from the
Agriculture product
market committee
(APMC).
The tangy tomato
which zoomed up to Rs
40 per kg at the APMC
and remained at the
same rate for almost 60
days has finally slipped
down to 10 per kg for
premium
quality.
“There has been a
bumper crop of tomatoes
this season in Maharashtra thus the vegetable which was sold
between 30 to 40 Rs per
kg at the wholesale
market has come down
to 8 to 10 Rs”, said a
trader from the market.
Not only has the rate
of tomato come down,
rates of other vegetables
like cabbage and cauliflower too has come
down. “Cauliflower
which was sold at between 20-24 Rs has
come down to Rs 16,
while cabbage is sold at
Rs 8 per kg currently.
Ladies finger is between
Rs 18 to 20”, added an-
other trader.
Meanwhile the green
peas is darer and is sold
between Rs 70- 80 per
kg however with the
winters round the corner traders expect the

green peas

Indians strongly believe
in democracy
There was record turnout in the 2014
Lok Sabha election. Haryana Assembly
election reported its highest-ever polling
percentage and Maharashtra improved on
its 2009 turnout figures. The increased
voter participation could be on account of
a desire for change at the national and State
levels, or civil society movements on corruption and other social issues. The recent elections have drawn more enthusiastic electors to the polling booths. The
awareness campaign of the Election Commission together with vigorous campaigning by candidates and political parties aided by greater access to polling booths,
easier process of voting and shorter
queues have all added up to a high voter
turnout.
It is time election commission as well
as political parties start thinking on the
German model of proportionate representation based on the votes polled by a party. This will definitely drive out the corrupt and unscrupulous elements from the
arena. NOTA and the number of absentee
voters should also be taken into account,
and this factor needs serious attention.
High turn out of voters during 16th Lok
Sabha election and now in assembly elections is the testimony of the deepening of
our democracy. People show their faith by
turning out in large numbers and now its
time for our leaders to fulfill the aspirations of people and not break that faith.
This is highly welcome signs for democracy. Larger participation in the election
means the people are still having hopes in
democratic institutions. When the average
voter turnout in UK, US are declining, ours
is increasing.
Higher turnout in voting is due to various reasons. (1) Publicity through visual
media and print media, (2) Personal campaigning by political parties, (3) Cash, free
transport, other sops, such as liquor, etc.

into the accounts office
of Naional Institute of
Fashion Technology in
Sector-4 Kharghar and
took away about Rs 3.5
lakhs cash kept there
on Tuesday night.
The Institute has

Institute’s accounts
office is situated in
one of the buildings
where extension work

a month. Earlier her
second number with a
tarrif rate of Rs. 99, was
put on a certain data
plan without her request or knowledge, she
did not realize the liability till the constant tele
call reminders insisted
that she pay p or else
suffer interrupted services. “Suddenly the paper bill was stopped being sent, and I had overpaid an amount of Rs
4000”, she lamented.
On a positive note,
her visit to the store and
a proper interaction did
help her to reverse the
unnecessary billing!

Despite shouting out
loudly for over half an

me or explain to me how
the whole thing is to be
handled in an affordable
way,” he said feeling
hopeless!

without understanding

What is plausible is
that the customer service executives all in the
age group of 20 to 27
years appear very calm
and try to listen more
than speak, mostly busy
looking at the monitors
in front of them, irrespective of the shouting,
complaining voices full
of woes!
Even after some
‘changes’ are made by
the Officers, most clients
do not seem to leave
with a smile!
“All service providers are the same!” says
Shraddha whose shrill
voice rattled the entire
store! ‘We really have to
learn and understand
how to use the connection, intelligently but we
have to constantly learn
and be alert about our
usage, she admits.
