From Fr. Tony:
Last week, I mentioned during the homily the
importance of praying for our deceased loved ones. The
highest form of prayer is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Fr. William Saunders, in his “Mass Intentions” article, said
it best. “An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for
several reasons: for example, in thanksgiving, for the
intentions of another person (such as on a birthday), or, as
is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone
who has died.
Please keep in mind that the tradition of offering
Masses for others, particularly the dead, originates in the
very early Church. Tertullian (c. 200) attested to
observing the anniversary of a spouse with prayers and
sacrifices, i.e. the Mass: ‘Indeed she prays for his soul, and
requests refreshment for him meanwhile, and fellowship
with him in the first resurrection; and she offers her
sacrifice on the anniversaries of his falling asleep’ (On
Monogamy, X). Moreover, the Canons of Hippolytus (c.
235) explicitly mentions the offering of prayers for the
dead during the Mass. St. Cyril of Jerusalem (d. 386), in
one of his many catechetical discourses, explained how at
Mass both the living and dead are remembered, and how
the Eucharistic Sacrifice of our Lord is of benefit to
sinners, living and dead. St. Augustine (d. 430) recorded
the dying wishes of his mother, St. Monica in his
Confessions: ‘One thing only I ask you, that you
remember me at the altar of the Lord wherever you may
be.’ Finally, Pope St. Gregory (d. 604) said, ‘Let us not
hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our
prayers for them.’
Given this understanding, we can add some specifics
when a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions:
First, to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord
with the norms of the Church. Second, to offer the Mass
in union with the whole Church and for the good of the
whole Church. Third, to offer the Mass for a particular
intention, such as the repose of the soul of someone who
has died. When we face the death of someone, even a
person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the
repose of his soul and to offer our prayers are more
beneficial and comforting than any other sympathy card or
bouquet of flowers. To have a Mass offered on the
occasion of a birthday, anniversary or special need is
appropriate, beneficial and appreciated.
Therefore, the effects of the Mass bring certain benefits
or fruits. The general fruits of the Mass are the effects
upon the whole Church — to the living faithful as well as
the poor souls in purgatory. For this reason, in the Canon
of the Mass (the Eucharistic Prayer), a special mention is
made for both the living and the dead. The special
ministerial fruits of the Mass are applied to the particular
intention of the Mass, i.e. ‘for whom the Mass is offered.’
The special personal fruits of the Mass benefit the
celebrating priest who acts in the person of Christ in
offering the Mass and to the people who are in attendance
and participate in the offering of the Mass. The intention
of the Mass is also determined by various factors: The
Church may stipulate the particular intention; for example,
all pastors are required to offer one Mass on the weekend
for the intentions of the living and deceased parishioners
of a parish. A priest may also have his own particular
intention in offering a Mass, such as the repose of the soul
of his parents. Finally, a person may ask a priest to offer a
Mass for a particular intention; usually, a stipend ($10 for
our Diocese) is given to the priest for offering the Mass,
which thereby in justice creates an obligation which must
be satisfied.”
However, as Code of Canon Law states, “No one is
permitted to accept more offerings for masses to be
applied by himself than he can satisfy within a year” (Can.
953). Also, “if in certain churches or oratories more
masses are asked to be celebrated than can be celebrated
there, it is permitted for them to be celebrated elsewhere
unless the donors have expressly indicated contrary
intention” (Can. 954). Finally, “the time within which
masses must be celebrated begins on the day the priest
who is to celebrate them received them unless it is
otherwise evident” (Can. 955 §2). In other words, any
Mass that is offered has to be celebrated within one year
that it was offered. However, I pray that this law does not
stop our wanting to offer Masses, because our loved ones’
benefit from them. Keep in mind, the Mass intentions are
not for us (which is why some of us do not want to send
the Masses elsewhere but want them celebrated locally so
that we can be there), but they are for our deceased. Why
delay their time in purgatory any more than they have to
be there? They need our prayers, our Masses, and our
sacrifices, and they need them now.
May our deceased loved ones and all the faithful
departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace!!!

It is two weeks from Commitment Sunday. Information
packets and the Bishop’s accompanying letter has been
mailed out so you likely will have received it. You can go
ahead and make your pledge when you receive the packet
and either mail it in to the diocese or you can drop it in the
collection basket and we will send it in. Next weekend we
will see the video about the Appeal and hear Bishop
LeVoir and others speak on the good work of the Appeal.
The “Light of the World Area Faith Community”
will be doing a Picture Directory next summer. We are
scheduling dates in late July through mid-August 2015. If

The St. Anne’s School Bake Sale at the Library Craft
Fair was a huge success. Thank you to all bakers for
providing their delicious baked goods. Profit from the
event was $504. A portion of these funds will be used to
bring in Professor Jerry Wenzel, who will spend the day at
school on Jan. 26 inspiring students and staff to discover
the wonders of science.

The school applied for and was awarded a $500
Educational Technology Grant by the Catholic United
Financial Foundation. The grant will help to further a goal
of our Technology Plan of equipping all classrooms with
interactive devices and software.
Choices Pregnancy Center will hold their 20th Annual
Holiday Shopping Open House on Saturday, Nov. 15 from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Church, Redwood
Falls. A soup & BBQ lunch will be served and shopping
with many vendors.
Area Faith Community-Pastoral Council will meet on
Tues, Nov 25 at 7 p.m. at St. Mathias.

Lucas Mission on Friday, November 21st at the Crow
River Winery east of Hutchinson on Highway 7. Doors

Request for Parish Members to Complete Surveys:
The New Ulm Diocesan Schools Planning Committee
is requesting parish members of parishes served by a
Catholic school to complete two online surveys: a Schools
Catholic Identity Defining Characteristics Survey and a
Schools Program Effectiveness Survey. Questions for both
surveys are based on the National Standards and
Benchmarks for Effective Elementary and Secondary
Catholic Schools.
Catholic school staff and students (grades 5-12) have
completed similar surveys. Parents have also been asked
to complete the surveys. The results will be tabulated and
analyzed for all of the fifteen schools within the Diocese

The Church of the Japanese Martyrs in
Leavenworth is having a Catholic United Financial
Matching Grant Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, November
9, 2014 serving from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. On the

coffee, chocolate milk and juice. Cost is $6:00 for adults;
