If you ordered a pie last weekend from the Corpus Christi
Chapter of Dominican Laity please pick it up on Sunday after
the 09:30 and 11:30 AM Masses only. The pies come unbakedfrozen and keep perfectly in the freezer for 10-12 months for fast
and convenient baking any time! They are great to tuck in the
freezer for upcoming holidays or to offer as gifts to friends and

NATIVITY MOMS GROUP

PRE-ADVENT RETREAT
Why do we know what to do, but do not do it? Are we lacking
in will, grace or both? How do we overcome our weaknesses?
On Saturday, 22 November 2014, Nativity Parish will host the
South San Mateo Legion of Mary pre-Advent retreat entitled
“The Spirit is Willing, but the Flesh is Weak.” All are welcome to
attend as a great way to get ready for another Catholic Liturgical
Year. It begins with Holy Mass at 08:00 AM and ends with
Benediction at 12:00 PM. Deacon Dominick Peloso will present
three conferences based on Elizabeth Kindelman’s “Flame of
Love.” They will hopefully rouse us out of our sleep as we are
called to arms. There will also be a complimentary continental
breakfast and opportunities for silent reflection. For more

BLOOD DRIVE
CHRISTMAS ADOPT-A-FAMILY
This year Nativity will be celebrating the 24th annual Adopt-AFamily program. In this program, individuals, families, or work
groups can adopt an identified needy family. The adopting family
then purchases gifts for each of the children, and a family gift
(towels, utensils, etc.). They are dropped off at the school gym on
Dec. 13th and delivered by our volunteers. The signups will occur
after the Masses on the weekends of 15-16 and 22-23 November
2014. At that time you will be given suggestions
and ideas for your purchases, some of which
come from the families themselves. On Friday,
12 December 2014, volunteers are needed to
pack the food, and on Saturday, 13 December
2014, more volunteers are needed to deliver the
gifts of Christmas cheer to the families. You may
also sign up for packing, delivery, phone calls or
shopping. We would like to thank everyone in advance for your
generosity this year and in past years. It is truly a blessing for the
committee, participating parishioners, those who received it, and
the parish as a whole. This is a great way to share our blessings
from God with those who have much less. For questions or help,

Our next Nativity Community Blood Drive will be held

Nativity parking lot and the staff make every effort to

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING
Fr. Al is looking for students in the 5th grade and older who
would like to be trained as Altar Servers. Training will begin
in November after school on selected Tuesdays and Fridays.
Applications and the schedule of training can be found in the
vestibule of the Church or on the Altar Servers website: www.
nativitystars.com. Fr. Al is also looking for an adult that would be
willing to volunteer to help with the altar server training. If you
are interested in helping with this very important ministry please

NEW MISSAL/HYMNAL COMING IN ADVENT
On Sunday, 30 November 2014, Nativity will begin using
Journeysongs: Assembly Edition with Lectionary Readings,
published by Oregon Catholic Press. This permanent, hardcover
pew hymnal will replace both the Glory and Praise hymnal,
which is now outdated, and the Breaking Bread missalettes, which
expire annually and need to be replaced. It includes the Sunday
lectionary readings for all three yearly cycles. Other advantages
are that its permanence and appearance reflect the solemnity of
the liturgy, it reduces the number of books in the pews, and will
save the parish money over time. It does have two disadvantages.
First, it does not include the texts of the four Eucharistic Prayers,
but we have noted that few parishioners open the missalettes to
follow them, and these prayers are readily available online for
those who want them. Second, it does not contain
any resources for daily Mass. A pew missal that
would add all these items would be too heavy to be
useful, and none have been published. Daily Mass
participants are encouraged to use other worship
sources, such as Magnificat, The Word Among Us,
or their own missals (as many already do). For more information

PRAYER FOR VETERANS
Almighty God, we commend to Your gracious care and keeping
all the men and women of our Armed Forces at home and abroad.
Defend them day by day with Your heavenly grace; strengthen
them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face
the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of Your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our

SCHOLA SERAPHICA CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Tickets are available for Schola Seraphica’s Christmas Concert on
07 December 2014, 02:30 PM at St. Patrick’s Seminary. Tickets
are $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for seniors and students. They
may be purchased at the Nativity parish office. Seating is limited.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT
St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco is proud to announce an
exhibit of “A Prayer for Children,” which is accompanied by
photographs from around the world, taken and hung by parishioner
Charlene Diane Dorman. This exhibit will be in place until after

DAY OF DISCERNMENT

SAINT MARTIN OF TOURS, Bishop (c. 316-397)
Martin was born to pagan parents; his father was a Roman military officer and tribune. Martin joined the Roman imperial army
at age 15. He once gave a beggar half of his heavy officer’s cloak,
and later had a vision of Jesus wearing the cloak. Martin was persecuted by the Arians, who were openly hostile to Catholics, and
later became first a hermit, then the bishop of Tours. Martin was
the first non-martyr to receive the cultus of a saint.

SAINT FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI (1850-1917)
Foundress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Frances
and six Sisters arrived in New York from Italy in 1889. They worked
among immigrants, especially Italians. Mother Cabrini founded
67 institutions, including schools, hospitals, and orphanages in the
United States, Europe and South America. Like many of the people
she worked with, Mother became a United States citizen during her
life, and after her death she was the first US citizen to be canonized.

SAINT NICHOLAS TAVELIC AND COMPANIONS, Martyrs
(d. 1391)
As Franciscan custodians of the shrines in the Holy Land, Nicholas,
Deodat, Peter of Narbonne and Stephen of Cuneo decided to
take a direct approach to converting the Muslims. On November
11, 1391, they went to the huge Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem and
asked to see the Qadi (Muslim official). Reading from a prepared
statement, they said that all people must accept the gospel of Jesus.
When they were ordered to retract their statement, they refused.
After beatings and imprisonment, they were beheaded before a
large crowd.
Nicholas and his companions were canonized in 1970. They are
the only Franciscans martyred in the Holy Land to be canonized.

Feehan, a well-known local composer, conductor and teacher, on
