Connecting Veterans
fter learning that two of our hospice
patients, Raymond Zuniga and
Richard Hoegh, were not only WWII
veterans but fought during the same time in
the same area of Europe, Hoffmann team
members offered to bring the two together
for a luncheon so they could meet and
share their stories. The two were thrilled to
say the least.
During the luncheon Raymond Zuniga said,
“It is wonderful to finally be able to speak
with someone who understands and
believes what I went through.They
expressed their deepest gratitude to
Hoffmann Hospice for arranging the
luncheon and for honoring them with a
certificate for their service and a formal “We
Honor Veterans” pin provided by Hoffmann
Spiritual Counselor Mason Wren.

site was an onion field. Now this field

This 18-year dream of Tom and
Beth Hoffmann broke ground on
April 9th, 2014, and since then dirt
has been moving! The Klassen
Corporation was chosen by the
Board of Directors of Hoffmann
Hospice as general contractor for the
project and has been hard at work in the
Bakersfield summer sun for almost six
months.
A lot of work went into getting the site
ready for the foundation including
moistening the soil, grading the entire site,
staking the property, digging trenches,
and precisely laying all of the underground
plumbing and electrical work. Once that
was complete the steel was put into place
and the concrete foundation was poured.

This foundation marks not only the base on
which the structure will rest, but the
foundation for expanding end of life care
for many Kern County residents. Every year
there are Kern County residents who are
eligible to benefit from hospice care but
don’t receive services because of a

shortage of community resources. When
the hospice home opens its doors in
summer 2015 an estimated 1,800
additional families will have the opportunity
to receive compassionate hospice care in a
home-like setting.
Hoffmann Hospice is proud that this project
to expand end-of life care for Kern County
residents is backed by donations from
community members, on-going fundraising
efforts and the financing support of Valley
Republic Bank.

Sequel Returns to Kern Countyy
any of you may recall last November
when 12 local Sonic Drive-In
restaurants helped Hoffmann Hospice kick
off their fundraising campaign for Kern
County’s first and only hospice home. But the
story actually starts much earlier.
In 2012 Sonic franchise owners Scott and
Tani McMillan made a personal financial
commitment to support Hoffmann’s early
fundraising efforts and wanted to do
something additional that was a natural
extension of that commitment. In November
of last year they launched the inaugural (and
now annual!) “Hoffmann Hero” month at 12
local Sonic Drive-In restaurants, including
locations in Shafter, Delano and Tehachapi.
When asked how they came to be involved
with Hoffmann Hospice even though neither
had ever had family members utilize
Hoffmann services, the McMillan’s said the
suggestion had come from Milt Cole, their
former Senior Pastor at Riverlakes
Community Church. It was Milt, who also
served as a member of the Board of Directors
for Hoffmann Hospice, who encouraged the
McMillans to consider Hoffmann Hospice
when “giving back” to the community.
As a relatively new business owner, Scott
McMillan wasn’t sure how to proceed. “Up to
this point I hadn’t ever really contemplated
giving back to the community; I had neither
heard of Hoffmann Hospice nor had a clue
what hospice was! It took me a couple of
years to get my head around ‘giving back,’
but once I fully understood it was one of my
responsibilities as a business owner, we
jumped in with both feet. After doing more
research on Hoffmann Hospice we knew it
was one of the organizations we wanted to
partner with and help support.”
Based on the success of last year’s promotion,
it appears both the general public and the
Sonic staff are equally excited the event is
back. The “Hoffmann Hero” is a one-of-a-kind
drink specially formulated by Sonic’s creative
management team. It is the signature menu
item to order throughout the month of
November. 50% of all Hoffmann Hero sales
will go to Hoffmann Hospice.
Last year the drink became so popular that
local Sonic restaurants competed
ted to see
which could sell the most Hoffmann Heroes
during the month. This excitement and
energy inspired restaurant customers who
would invariably ask about the drink, giving
Sonic staff the opportunity to help raise
awareness about Hoffmann Hospice and
its services.
November is almost here – so get ready to
treat the family, your girlfriend, your
employees or customers to a “Hoffmann
Hero” at your favorite local Sonic Drive-In and
become a Hoffmann Hero yourself by
supporting one of Kern County’s most
dedicated non-profit healthcare agencies.
(Inside secret…the Hoffmann Hero is also available in
Slush form and rumor is it’s even better than the drink!)
