Emmitt G. Coakley Memorial
Highway a Possibility

The life of Emmitt G. Coakley is
one that is deeply inscribed in many
hearts of the people of Callahan and
the surrounding communities. Many
educators who worked with him,
students who were taught by him,
and just friends adored his wonderful
smile! Mr. Coakley served as a teacher,
principal and substitute teacher. He also
served on the Nassau County Zoning
Board for many years. Emmitt G.
Coakley passed away March 6, 2014.

DON'T FORGET TO
fond memories (I’m sure there are those
who have some not so fond memories)
that wish to remember him a special
way. He probably wouldn’t be behind
this because he was never concerned
about himself…always others. A small
group of friends got together and have
worked hard to try to get a portion of
US Highway 1, between 5th Avenue and
Old Dixie Highway, named Emmitt G.
Coakley Memorial Highway. The road
name will not be changed, just a couple
of signs placed in his memory.
In a recent Town of Callahan council
meeting, Resolution 2014-R23 was
approved which concerned renaming
a portion of US Highway 1, Emmitt
G. Coakley Memorial Highway. The
highway is state-owned however as
respect for the Town of Callahan and
protocol, the resolution went before the
council for approval. The resolution
must also go before the Nassau County
Board of County Commissioners and
then through state legislation. State
Representative Janet Adkins has been
very helpful and supportive of the
resolution.
“The main thing is not to change
the name but to honor and memorialize
the life of such a fine man,” said
Paul Schwend, Callahan resident and
businessman who attended the council
meeting. “He did so many great things
for so many in our town. It’s just a way
to honor him.”
“Mr. Coakley was a great leader
who was truly larger than life!” added
Callahan President Bobby Rau.
Your vote counts so don’t forget to vote! Early
voting will continue through Saturday, November
1 at the Callahan County Building and the Hilliard
County Building from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Election Day
is Tuesday, November 4 and the polls will be open
from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Voters must vote at their precinct
on election day.

Harrison Retains an Attorney

The Callahan Town Council met
Monday, October 20 for their final
meeting of October. The first order
of old business was the second public
hearing on the Land Development
Regulations. The council was unable
to vote on the item because it was
not advertised. Town Manager and
Public Works Director Mike Williams
requested looking over the regulations
again to make some much needed
changes. Town Attorney Jeb Branham
advised the council to advertise the
item as it was voted on at the first public
hearing, with minor changes. “This
really needs to be passed as soon as you
possibly can,” added Branham.
The council once again discussed the
mutual aid agreement between Nassau
County Fire Rescue and the Town of
Callahan Volunteer Fire Department.
The council requested that Mayor
Shirley Graham re-send the agreement
back to the county for their approval.
In other business, Attorney Branham
advised the council that Carrie Harrison
has retained an attorney. “It’s not clear
what her (Harrison) intentions are. I
have been in contact with her attorney
but not at length,” said Branham. “She
has not paid the additional money that
was requested. It doesn’t sound like she
plans a lawsuit against the town but at
this point I don’t know. I’ll update the
council when I know anything else.”
Harrison is the town employee that
paid back over $40,000 to the town in
what was described as an ‘oversight’
in insurance payments. The town had
an auditor go back four years and that
was the amount he came up with to
be paid back. The town council later
decided that Harrison should also be
responsible to pay the auditors fees and
any attorney’s fees that occurred during
the investigation. The amount left
owing was $2500 that was to be paid by
October 1, 2014. Harrison is no longer
employed by the town.
Resolution 2014-R24 and Resolution
2014-R25 were both approved which
concerned sending the application for
the FRDAP Grant in the amount of
$50,000 each for Ewing Park Phase III
and Phase IV, for much needed upgrades
to Ewing Park.

What a beautiful world God created!
I was the lucky one who got to go on
vacation last week! Because Jessie and
I are such a good team…no one even
realized I wasn’t around. How blessed I
am to have such a wonderful employee
and even better friend! She did a great
job in my absence. Thanks Jessie!
Roger and I were honored to take my
parents (Jim and Julia Stearn) to Pigeon
Forge, Tennessee last week and also
meet up with my sister and her husband,
Marci and Dave, and my oldest brother
and his wife, Dub and Carol for a
mountain get away! Mom and Dad had
a trip planned with their church however
the trip was canceled. We saw how
much Mama really wanted to go so we
all decided to make it happen. We made
the trip in two days. The first night we
stopped in Madison, Georgia. As we
began the second leg, we began to see
more of God’s beautiful creation. We
made it to Dillard, Georgia just in time
for lunch. We had lunch at the Dilliard
House. If you’ve never been there, it
is truly something to experience. The
restaurant itself is so neat and the
windows are huge. You just sit and
enjoy the beautiful landscape while you
eat and eat and eat! It is served family
style and you get as much as you want.
It was another great experience and
wonderful memory.
We couldn’t wait to get to our
cabin, as Roger and I were the ones
who found it. We were a little nervous
about how everything would be. It
was magical! We rented an authentic
mountain cabin, three stories tall, with
wood everywhere. It was beautiful.
Both porches stretched across the front
of the cabin with a breathtaking view
of the mountains. Each day brought a
different look as the colors continued to

change. Our first morning there,
the temperature was around 45.
The morning we left it was a
chilly 39. The days were beautiful
as the temperatures soared only
into the mid 70s. It was perfect.
Marci, Dub and Carol trekked
out one morning to do a little
walking. They quickly realized
that we were in the mountains
not hills. Daddy and I chose a
short walk but it was a steep climb
back. Good thing I distracted Daddy
with some big acorns that I picked up
for decorating. Everyone kind of did
what they wanted to. I know Mama
didn’t stray far away from the deck and
the beautiful view. That’s really all she
wanted to do. She was so content and
that made us all happy! We all went to
the Dixie Stampede one night for dinner
and the show. It was a great show and
good gracious at all the food. It was so
good.
We headed out one day and went to
the Old Mill Village. The decorations
up there are so amazing. I’ve never seen
so many pumpkins. It seemed like each
corner was decorated for fall…such a
beautiful time of the year. Roger made
sure to pick up some mulling spices for
our cider at Thanksgiving. Oh my…that
stuff smells so good on a cool night. I
can’t wait! We all finally met up and
went to eat at the Old Mill Restaurant.
I think we did do a lot of eating. That’s
what you’re supposed to do on vacation
right? Such a cool place to eat! Just
really good ‘ole country cooking and
lots of it! Marci made a stop at the candy

A Fallen Rider
Dear Editor,
The rest of the story…A Fallen Rider.
There will be one less motorcycle on the
roads of Nassau County from now on. For
the people who live here and the families of
Veterans in hallowed earth, this biker will
be absent. They probably never knew how
much he cared for them. You see, here is the
rest of the story. Rocky Cleary was a huge
part of the placement of over 700 Flags at 18
cemeteries in the county. From Brickyard
to Deep Creek, Haddock to Mills, Callahan
Community to Buford Grove, Hilliard
Community to Jones, Live Oak to Kings
Ferry and many others. If you happen to see a
flag, he was a part of getting it there. He rode
everywhere, rain or shine, to reverently place
a flag. It was about the mission. No veterans'
grave would go without a flag.
Though as a Graverider, we don't get
to see the faces of friends and family when

they visit a cemetery, he knew the happiness
brought when it’s known that a loved veteran
will not be forgotten. He was an original
member of the Blank Check Society (BCS)
of America, a plankowner of the Nassau
Chapter and a Ride Captain and Graverider.
He wore his colors with pride just like the
Red, White and Blue of old Glory. Rocky
tragically passed away last week and will be
tremendously missed.
Whether you rode with him or not,
his bond to this community made you his
brother, sister and friend. With perseverance,
we shall continue the mission. But if people
were to visit a cemetery, after the BCS has
placed flags, and just happen to notice that
a flag is missing. Do not worry, it only
means that Rocky is delivering hand to hand.
Condolences to his wife and family. Ride
hard, Ride far, Ride free, Ride in Peace.

shop and bought a boat load of taffy. Oh
my…it is so good. I can remember that
we used to get taffy a lot when we were
growing up. I guess it was really cheap
and kept us all quiet.
Roger and I trekked out to the
Roaring Fork Motor Trail. We were told
about it by his sister Rhonda. What a
beautiful place that was. The colors were
absolutely breathtaking and the ride was
amazing. Cade’s Cove is more open and
Roaring Fork is very woodsy. There is
a creek or stream, okay some kind of
water running through the entire ride.
There’s just something about water and
rocks. Beautiful! On the way back we
came through Ashville, North Carolina.
Again, if you’ve never taken that route it
is certainly beautiful. I think Mom and
I oohed and ahhed the entire time.
What a special trip this was…
definitely one to mark up in the memory
book. Almost every morning, Daddy
read a devotion with us all. Another
special memory. I am truly blessed to
have such Godly parents who continue
to strive to give God glory for all things,
good or bad. We serve an awesome
God and I was the fortunate one to see
so much of His mighty hand in His
creation. It really isn’t that hard to count
the many blessings that continue to fill
my life. Roger and I also celebrated our
anniversary on that trip. Once again,
how fortunate I am that he chose me for
his wife. I’m thankful for such a special
trip with some of the most special
people in my life.

announced Natura Wines, produced
by Emiliana Organic Vineyards, the
world’s leading organic winery, and
Nassau County Extension are partnering
on an expansion of the UF/IFAS Nassau
County Demonstration Gardens at the
James S. Page Governmental Complex.
A partnership between Natura
and national nonprofit Keep America
Beautiful (KAB), which builds and
sustains vibrant communities, includes
a grant for Nassau County Extension’s
Gardens expansion project. The Natura
grant provided funding for installation
of soil, landscape bricks, a JerusalemThorn (Parkinsonia aculeate) tree and
companion plantings in an area next
to the Extension’s Palm Garden at the
Governmental Complex.
Included
in the landscape design for this area
are multiple installations of Yellow
Coneflower (Ratibida pinnata) and,
Purple Heart (Setcreasea pallida 'Purple
Heart') plants. Micro-irrigation was
installed to provide efficient watering
of the plantings. A stone retaining wall
accents the new area, aids in erosion
control and defines the area.
“We selected the Jerusalem-Thorn
In the Kitchen...
tree to feature in this new area because it
is a drought-tolerant, medium size tree,
growing to just 20-25 feet; it can take the
heat and has beautiful yellow flowers in
the Spring and Summer. It is an excellent
choice for Nassau County homeowners
who want a deciduous, flowering tree in
their landscape, with low-maintenance
requirements,” stated Jordi.
As part of the Natura and KAB
partnership, Keep Nassau Beautiful
supported the Natura grant to Nassau
Extension. Local business support was
evident in that the family of David Page,
recently-retired owner of Page’s Nursery,
donated the Jerusalem-Thorn tree in
honor of Mr. Page who has always been a
big supporter of Nassau Extension under
Rebecca Jordi’s leadership.

Sauteed Apples
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup cold water
4 large tart apples,
1/2 cup brown sugar
peeled, cored and sliced 1/4 inch thick
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons cornstarch
In a large skillet or saucepan, melt butter over medium heat; add apples. Cook, stirring
constantly, until apples are almost tender, about 6 to 7 minutes. Dissolve cornstarch in water;
add to skillet. Stir in brown sugar and cinnamon. Boil for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat and serve warm.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Here we are again in the fall of the year! I really love
this time of year and can't remember a time when the days
have been as beautiful as they have been this last week.
This time of year brings with it football, fall festivals,
hunting, fishing, holidays, celebrations and family time.
One of those holidays or celebrations is right around
the corner and is known as Halloween. I'm not going to
get into how Halloween came to be, what it means for
us or what we should or should not do. I will however
tell you this, some say follow your heart - Jesus tells us to
follow Him! Moms and Dads, if you send your kids out this Friday, how will they
be dressed? Who will they represent? Homeowners, as kids knock on your door,
what will you tell them? What will you give them? How about a good Gospel tract?
Instead of celebrating with ghosts, goblins, superstitious spells and blood curdling
acts, let's celebrate by representing and dedicating our lives to the life-saving blood
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
We have yet another celebration this weekend and that's the Florida/Georgia
football game. As Christians, how will you act? What kind of witness will you be?
Remember this is just a game. Your relationship with Christ is real and eternal and
how we act during these times can make or break our witness for Christ.
We need to honor God in all situations. The word of God tells us in 1 Corinthians
10:31, “…that whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
This means that we are to do everything we can to glorify God in all things,
all the time, everywhere, period! This doesn't just happen, as Christians we are
supposed to make sure that God is glorified in everything we do and say. As a child
of God our most important relationship should be with Jesus Christ. According to
Matthew 6:33, when our relationship with Jesus is first everything else falls into
place.
So, as we are all out celebrating this weekend let’s remember, be safe, be a
witness and do everything you can to honor the one who died for you.
The Bryceville Community Club held their monthly
meeting last Tuesday. The program featured several
candidates who are on the ballot in the November 4th
election. State Representative Janet Adkins spoke
on behalf of the Republican Party’s candidates for
Governor, Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer and
Commissioner of Agriculture.
Phil Morton elaborated on the
Democratic candidates for those
same offices. John Crawford
talked about the good and bad
aspects of the three amendments
listed on the ballot, while Pat Zeorlin gave a brief overview
of each of the five judges on the ballot for retention on the
Appellate Court of the First Judicial district. A covered
dish meal followed the meeting.
CMS to Honor Veterans
Callahan Middle School is inviting all Veterans Friday, November
7 to their cafetorium for their Annual Veterans Day Assembly. This
assembly is in honor of those who have served in our military to secure
the blessings of America's liberty. The assembly will commence at 10

The Nassau Humane Society is very
excited to announce the Grand Opening of
their new Animal Rescue Center located at
641 Airport Road in Fernandina
Beach on Friday, November 7.

Ribbon Cutting ceremony and

Our new shelter provides
additional space for animal
rescue and indoor protection
from the weather. Capacity for dogs has
increased by 150%, from 25 kennels to 64.
The new cattery has additional space in the
open cattery for the 40-50 cats in our care,
as well as private areas for less social cats
or kittens. Dedicated space for adoption
counseling helps increase adoption rates.
Lab space allows us to care
for animals in a less stressful
environment.
This past fiscal year, the
Nassau Humane Society had a
record-breaking year and found
714 homes for our sheltered
animals. We provide food, a nokill shelter and medical care for
the abandoned, the abused, the
surrendered and the rescued. Our mostlyvolunteer organization strives daily to

the lives of both.

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office arrested Adam Duwayne
Dunlap, 24, Jacksonville, who is suspected of several burglaries
and thefts in the Bryceville area. Dunlap was charged with: 3

of ownership; 2 counts of petit theft; 2 counts of burglary to an
unoccupied conveyance; 1 count of burglary to a conveyance armed;

Guy William Cleary, Sr.
Fallen rider, on October 22,
Guy ‘Rocky’ William Cleary has
taken his final ride. Death leaves
a heartache no one can heal, love
leaves a memory no one can
steal. When someone you love goes
home to our Savior, their memory
becomes a treasure. Rocky has planted that
treasure in all of us with his devotion to the
Blank Check Society honoring veterans to
being there for all his family and friends.
God took another angel home. Rocky- You
will never be gone or forgotten because your
treasure lives in all our hearts and memories.
I love you stallion- your angel.
He is survived by his wife Diana Cleary;
his sons Guy William Cleary, Jr. and Nick
Cleary; his daughters Priscilla Marie Cleary
and Kayla Marie; five grandchildren Jasmine,

Norman Dane Lloyd, Sr.
Norman Dane Lloyd, Sr, 61, of Folkston,
passed away suddenly in Jacksonville. He
was born in Brunswick, Georgia to the late
Rayburn Cecil Lloyd and Mary Thompson
Lloyd Crews. He retired from Gilman Paper
Company after over 30 years of service. He
was a member of Peoples Baptist Church
in Folkston. Along with his parents, he was
preceded in death by his two brothers Arthur
and Dennis Lloyd; and a grandson Joseph
Story.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years
Linda Sue Lloyd; three children Lavonne
(Eddie) Story, Norman Dane Lloyd, Jr. and
Shawn Lloyd; 10 grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Friday,
October 24 at Victory Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October
25 at Victory Baptist Church with Bro. Ethan
Story, Bro. Mike Easter and Bro. Tim King
officiating. Burial followed in Pineview
Cemetery.

Patricia D. Milligan
Patricia Davis Milligan, 68, of Callahan,
passed away October 22. She was born on July
18, 1946 in Jacksonville to John and Anita
Davis. In addition to her parents, Patricia is
predeceased by a sister Lydia (Nan) Kidd.
Survivors include her husband Cary
Milligan; daughter Christine Eberhart;
grandsons John Carter and Tommy Cobb;
sister Marquita Ward; brother Charles Davis;
as well as nieces and nephews Wendy Smith,
Ki Rieckmann, Dena Kay Nagel, Art and
John Davis and Joe Kidd, IV; and her beloved
dog Tanker. Pat loved her dogs and horses and
also loved to hunt and fish. She will be greatly
missed.

Floyd Mitchell Musgrove
Floyd Mitchell Musgrove,
went home peacefully to be with
Christ, his Heavenly Father, on
October 27. He was surrounded
by many family and friends
the last days as he prepared for his
journey. Floyd was the son of the
late Ollie and Susie Knight Musgrove, a large
Hilliard family of 13 children, he was the 8th
child born. He graduated from Hilliard High,
Class of ’55 and University of South Florida,
with a B.A. in Business, Class of 1976. Floyd
served his country during the Vietnam era in
the United States Air Force. He was preceded
in death by his loving wife of 44 years Lois
Jean Campbell of Hazard, Kentucky; four
brothers Rufus (Buddy), Drady, Mitchell and
AJ; two sisters Wanda Bercaw and Audrey
Mae Dixon.
He is survived by his two children a son
Michael Floyd Musgrove; and a daughter
Michelle Lois Easterling; two grandsons
Sean and Ryan; and a granddaughter
Chloe Easterling of Hilliard; three brothers
Freeman, Alton and Richard Musgrove, all
of Hilliard; three sisters Dorothy Haddock of
Hilliard, Evelyn Dinkins (Dell) of Folkston
and Ann Grooms (Ronnie) of Jacksonville.
Pallbearers are Ron Grooms, Daniel
Lloyd, Jimmie Nelson, Scotty Laurence, Joe
Musgrove, Dell Dinkins, Jr., Mitchell Reed
and Justin Lloyd. Honorary pallbearers are
Bert Geiger, Fred Thrith, William Dimaria
and Damon Foskey.
Floyd had many spiritual advisors that
he loved dearly. Mainly, his Pastor Chris
Woodard, First Baptist Church of Boulougne;
Christian Hoyle, Buford Grove Baptist Church
and Garry Swearingen, Associate Pastor of
San Jose Church of Christ, Jacksonville. The

Irene Fachko Saye-Murray
Irene Fachko Saye-Murray, 90, passed
away October 26 in Jacksonville after an
extended illness. Irene was born in West
Deer Township, Pennsylvania on October 8,
1924, to the late John David and Anna Kunka
Fachko. At an early age her parents moved to
Callahan. She had five younger brothers, all
of whom are deceased.
Irene was married to the late Carl W.
Saye; and is survived by her husband Willard.
E. Murray. She has numerous nieces and
nephews living throughout the Jacksonville/
Callahan area.
After graduating from Callahan High
School, Irene attended Massey Business
College, Jacksonville and began a long career
with the sales department of the Southern
Railway/Norfolk Southern Corporation.
Irene attended Bible Study Fellowship for
many years. She enjoyed traveling, outdoor
activities, and was an avid shrimper.
Funeral services were held Wednesday,
October 29 in the Chapel of Callahan Funeral
Home. Interment followed in Jones Cemetery,
Callahan. Visitation was held prior to service.

Micah’s Place Receives $20,000 Grant
While domestic violence has
experienced a recent boost in awareness
due to recent events, women and
children in Nassau County are in need of
housing, resource and support programs
as they flee abusive situations and work
to rebuild their lives. Micah’s Place
in Nassau County received a $20,000
grant from The Mary Kay Foundation
as part of the organization’s annual
Shelter Grant program to maintain
critical services and programs. The
Mary Kay Foundation awarded a total
of $3 million in funding to 150 domestic
violence shelters in all 50 states, the
District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and
Guam in advance of Domestic Violence
Awareness Month in October.
“It’s been a bigger challenge than
ever for shelters to keep their doors
open and grants from The Mary
Kay Foundation are a vital part in
helping shelters move forward in their
missions,” said Anne Crews, board
member for The Mary Kay Foundation
and Vice President of Public Affairs for
Mary Kay Inc. “The shelter grants are
a signature program of the Foundation
and represent just one of the ways Mary
Kay is committed to ending domestic
violence. We are proud to support local
shelters like Micah’s Place that are on
the front lines of helping women and
children who need shelter and support
from abuse.”
Micah's Place is a Certified
Domestic Violence Center - and the
only one serving Nassau County.
The mission is to provide prevention
and intervention services to victims
of domestic violence and to provide
education within the community to
affect change in behavior and attitudes
relating to domestic violence. Micah’s
Place offers safe, confidential shelter,
advocacy, a 24-hour toll-free hotline,
counseling, legal advocacy, and support
groups to victims of domestic violence.

National Novel Writing Month
Writers across the First Coast
are preparing to stretch their writing
muscles because November is National
Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).
NaNoWriMo, a 30-day writing challenge,
encourages writers to compose 50,000
words during the month of November.
Writers from around the nation and the
world urge each other to meet their writing
goals through online and face-to-face
communication. ‘Write-ins,’ or scheduled
writing times, are planned for libraries
and other community venues across the
country.
For the first time, the Callahan Library
along with the Callahan Friends of the
Library will host a NaNoWriMo Kick-off
party on Tuesday, November 4 from 6-8
p.m. Refreshments will be provided by
The Sweet Spot, Callahan Barbecue and
the Callahan Friends of the Library. All
members of the community are invited to
attend, whether they are writing a novel or
working on shorter pieces.
Many area teachers are offering extra
credit to their students who participate in
one of the Write-Ins.
The Library will also host write-ins
on Tuesday, November 18 and Tuesday,
November 25, from 4-8 p.m. Snacks will
be provided by the Callahan Friends of the
Library.

Vikings Scalp the Warriors
The West Nassau Warriors traveled
to Raines High School in Jacksonville
last week for a Thursday night battle.
The Warriors fought hard but came up
on the short end of the stick. The first
quarter proved to be a defensive battle.
Raines was the only team to score in the
quarter on a 16-yard pass conversion.
As the second quarter began, Raines
continued to control the ball. The
Vikings were able to score on a 1-yard
run into the end zone however the extra
point attempt was blocked. The Warrior
defense continued to fight and was
able to capitalize on a fumble recovery.
Garrett Delano scooped up the ball and
ran it into the end zone 61 yards for
the first Warrior score. The extra point
attempt failed. The Vikings once again
took control of the ball and moved it
down the field scoring on a 10-yard run.
As the halftime buzzer sounded, the
score was West Nassau, 6; Raines, 20.
The third quarter was again a
defensive battle as both teams fought
hard to keep the other out of the end
zone. Raines was again allowed to score
on a 52-yard run plus the extra point.
Even though that was the only score of
the third quarter it placed more pressure
on the Warrior offense to get something
going. It seemed no matter how hard
they tried…they couldn’t get going. At
the beginning of the fourth quarter, the
Warrior offense tried to move the ball
successfully but to no avail. As the
Warriors punted, the Vikings received
the ball and ran it back 47 yards for
another score. The Warrior offense
didn’t give up. They put together a good
drive and moved down the field. Tison
Crews ran the ball into the end zone
from 3 yards out for the final Warrior
score. Davion Dubose charged into the
end zone for the two point conversion.
With time dwindling down, Raines
was allowed another score. As the final
buzzer sounded, the score was West
Nassau, 14; Raines, 40.
The Warriors were able to tally up 9
first downs and 215 rushing yards on 41
carries. Individual leaders for the game
were: Tison Crews with 7 carries for 87
yards; Davion Dubose with 21 carries
for 83 yards; Brandon Jackson with 13
carries for 45 yards; for the defensive
side Michael Dudzinski had 8 solo
tackles and 5 assists; Bryson Hodges
had 4 solo tackles and 2 assists; Austin
Painter had 4 solo tackles and 3 assists;
and Garrett Delano had 4 solo tackles
and 3 assists.
This week the Warriors will host the
Bolles Bulldogs in a district matchup at
Warrior field at 7:30 p.m. Go Warriors!

Hilliard Beats Bell in District Showdown

Last Friday night the Hilliard Flashes
hosted the Bell Bulldogs in a Class 1A
district battle for a guaranteed spot in
the playoffs. The game started out as a
defensive battle with both teams moving
the ball but stalling. But late in the first
quarter Bryce Jenkins connected with
Robert Weinberg on
a 22-yard touch pass
and Brayden Carroll
added the extra point,
and the quarter ended
with Hilliard up by 7.
In the second quarter
Hilliard scored about
every way possible.
It started with a
Brian Clark 48-yard
punt return for a
touchdown with 7:23 left in the quarter.
About three minutes later, Armani Scott
broke free on a 55-yard touchdown run.
On the next Bell possession, Carroll
intercepted a pass and returned it 40
yards for the score and Carroll added
the extra point. At the half, the game
stood at Hilliard, 24; Bell, 0.
Hilliard’s first possession in the
second half, Scott broke free again
on a 22-yard score. Carroll added the
extra point. Scott broke free again for
53 yards for his third touchdown
of the night with 3:45 left in the
third quarter and Carroll added the
extra point. Scott ended the night
with 11 carries for 171 yards and 3
touchdowns. Bell scored late in the
game with 4:50 left and failed on
the two point conversion. The final
score was: Hilliard, 42; Bell, 6.
Hilliard is now 3-1 in district
play and Bell has one more district

game next Friday night against the
defending state champions, Trenton.
With a Bell loss Hilliard locks the
district second seed. If Bell wins then
all three teams will have a one quarter
playoff to decide the top two teams.
Bryce Jenkins ended the night
passing 5 completions of 16 attempts for
70 yards, 1 touchdown
and 1 interception.
The leading receivers
for
the
game
were: Clark with 3
receptions for 29
yards; and Weinberg
with 3 receptions
for 28 yards and
1 touchdown. The
defense was strong
all night and only
gave up a total of 60 yards in the first
half lead again by Austin Turner with
9 tackles. Thomas Castleberry was a
huge contributor on defense also with 8
tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 1 of which he
recovered and returned for a touchdown
that was called back for a block in the
back. Jacob Waters also recovered a
fumble.
Hilliard looks forward to this week
as they will face Episcopal at Flashes
Field at 7:30 pm Friday night.
