Perspective
One day the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the purpose
of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what they
considered a very poor family.
Upon returning from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?” The boy replied, “It
was great Dad.” So the father asked, “Did you see how poor people live?” The son nodded.
He said, “We have a dog and they had four. We have a pool that covers most of our backyard
and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns around our pool and they have stars
at night. Our patio reaches our front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of
land and they have fields that go beyond their sight. We have servants and they serve others. We buy
our food and they raise their’s. We have walls around us to protect us and they have friends who
protect them.
The boy’s father was speechless. His son then added, “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we
are.”
Isn’t it amazing that sometimes we think someone is poor, but they have all that they need and
the things we would love to have! In 4-H I hope you will reach out to everyone whether they are poor
or rich and become friends with as many new folks as possible. Remember this story as we enter the
Thanksgiving season and throughout the remainder of your life.
