Hacienda Binay

Motives of the accusers, notwithstanding, the fact is the
charges against VP Jejomar Binay are legitimate political
concern that should be investigated.

Before the bar
of public opinion
Is
the Binay affair just "politicking" by rival politicians? Or is it a legitimate political concern
which we Filipinos have to scrutinize?
The accusation: Ill-gotten, referring to VP Binay’s alleged wealth. The defense: All we have are legit
said the Binay camp. The counterattack: A conspiracy against Nognog. The parry by Trillanes: An
absurd conspiracy theory.
So far the defenders had the harder time. Being “before the bar of public opinion” is much unlike
being “before the bar of justice.” Whereas, in the latter, the accused is presumed innocent until
proven guilty, in the former case one is usually presumed guilty at the onset, moreover if he is a
public servant.
Before the bar of public opinion, burden of proof, which in court lies with the prosecution, usually
shifts to the defendant. Therefore, in the alleged ill-gotten wealth issue the onus falls upon the Binay camp. On the other hand, dismissing as absurd the allegation of conspiracy against Nognog is
itself absurd. Such “conspiracy” is not illogical. Demolition jobs are not strange in politics.
But wait, if there is a conspiracy against the VP it does not necessarily mean that the issues raised
are not bonafide. A very high ranking official of the land amassing ill-gotten wealth is a serious political concern, despite that the motive of the conspirators is clearly quite self-serving.
A sin is a sin, no matter how and why it is bared. So why not VP Binay confront his accusers and
prove his innocence before the public? This is not yet a court hearing.
By the way, who owns those roosters at the game fowl farm within the Binay hacienda? Is the VP a
sabungero? Mayor Junjun Binay?
Mercado also said that contrary to Binay’s claims, he is an avid cockfighter, even showing the Vice
President owns a fighting cock farm.
“They cannot deny that. They have about a thousand fighting cocks here,” Mercado pointed out,
adding that cockfighting was Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay’s hobby.

T
wo giant game fowl each weighing as heavy as 4 or 5 kilos furiously clash on midair each going
for a quick kill; you hear thunderous sound of ferocious shuffles and see non stop action. The
Filipino cockfighters will soon witness this spectacle of a fight between Peruvian gamecocks.
(see video of Peruvian fights). Literally, a new dimension is added to Philippine cockfighting— the bigger size of fighting cocks.
These game fowl from Peru are tall and heavy so they pack big wallop but they are surprisingly fast
and quick for their size. Fights between
two Peruvians are entertaining and exciting. Filipino sabungeros will soon enjoy Peruvian fights as a group of Peruvian game fowl breeders in the Philippines form the Philippine Peruvian
Gamefowl Breeders Organization
(PPGBO) Inc. to introduce and promote
in the Philippines Peruvian cock fights,
Cebuano Jason Garces heads the group
as president with Leonardo Austria of
Registration. Rey Bajenting and Jayson Garces discuss finer points
Bataan as vice. The other officers are: in the registration papers.
Secretary, Melvin Reyes of Laguna;
Auditor, Franz Tiongco of Cagayan de Oro; and Treasurer, Joe Bert Marcuelo of Cavite.
The group aims to foster camaraderie among members and to promote the Peruvian game fowl here in
the Philippines. The first official derby of the group will be held sometime in May or June 2016 but the
group may decide to hold exhibition matches prior to the derby.
Most members of the group sell their pure and graded Peruvians to allow those who want to breed the
Peruvian to acquire authentic Peruvian game fowl. Imported Peruvians cost as much as 5,000 US$ a
trio, excluding shipping cost.
The group is now accepting members. Applicants will be screened to determine the source of their Peruvian fowl. Because of its high cost, many will call their fowl Peruvian even if it does not have Peruvian
blood in it. It is also the aim of PPGBO to guide new breeders of Peruvian in acquiring authentic stock.
Fowl Wikipedia states that “Peruvian gamefowl are a fairly old breed of gamefowl, dating back to the
1600s possibly earlier. They were developed
by crossing various Oriental gamefowl
withOld English Games and Spanish gamefowl. The Oriental breeds mentioned mostly
were Shamos, Malay,
Secretary Melvin
Reyes, President and Asil as well.”

Alkaline
condition
Buffering postpones
fatigue by preventing
concentration of
lactic acid in the
muscles.
Roosterman No. 36
O
ne by-product of the production-consumption and resynthesis of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate, the energy currency) is concentration of lactic acid in the muscles. When
this happens fatigue starts to overcome the rooster.
One way of delaying this, in effect postponing fatigue, is to
ensure an ample supply of creatine and ribose. Another is
what is called buffering.
Buffering is done by stocking alkaline agents or raising the
alkalinity of the blood. Alkaline will counter act the formation of acid in the blood and muscles thereby delaying the
onset of fatigue.
11
Chicken feed are mostly acidic. Most grains are
acidic, as well as the denatured pelletized feeds
that are mixed with chemicals. Thus, seven days
before the fight we might as well start the buffering process by introducing to their system
more alkaline. Egg white is perceived to have a
lower acidity than whole egg, so, give egg
whites instead of whole eggs during the peaking
period.
A very safe way is giving alkaline water, or at
least, pure water, instead of tap water to the
chickens being prepared for the fight. Most tap
water have high acid level. You may also introduce pro-biotics or yogurt, but not milk, cheese
and other dairy products. As can’t process lactose because chickens do not have lactase.
Some fruits such as apples, cantaloupe and banana are also good alkaline agents. However,
care must be taken when they are given on fight
day because of their moisture and bulk.

Non-traditional ways
Larry Locara
of raising By
(The Farmer Entrepreneur)
chickens

C
hickens are easy to raise but the farmer is
often beset with problems that he needs to
address fast because chickens like other live animals have needs that should be provided for immediately. Failure on the part of the farmer
would mean diseases and oftentimes mortality.
On our visits to farmers to share our experience
and to gather theirs, we learned more that we
gave out. Farmers who are progressive and would
like to try new things are also innovative and often goes out of the traditional approaches to try
out their own and thereby develop their own systems or protocol.
Making and Using Probiotics:
The making and use of probiotics have already
gone a long way since the 1930s when Dr. Teruo
Higa first experimented and perfected the use of
beneficial bacteria, now known as probiotics as
opposed to antibiotics. The modifications made
by farmers have also been tested by their peers
and eventually adopted because they are as effective as the products from the method of Dr.
Higa.
IMO or Indigenous Micro Organisms for example,
are now made in so many ways. Some are still
using the original procedure of Higa but many are
Roosterman No. 36
now making them with added ingredients such as
lactobacilli from milk and even incorporating soils
and substances known or believed to contain
beneficial bacteria, molds, yeast and enzymes. All
these innovations are claimed by the exponents
to be as effective or may be more effective than
the original recipe.
One basic process is to buy a potent EM1 product
which sells for more than P300.00. The proponent then cooks rice like the original procedure
and once cooled, adds one capful of EM1 for
every kilogram of cooked rice. Then sometimes,
he also adds one-half bottle of the popular lactobacilli drink. The batch is mixed thoroughly then
covered with cloth and placed in a bamboo grove
or sometimes in a cool place for 5-7 days. Then
like the usual process of IMO, molasses or sugar
is added. Farmers using this process claim that it
is best for chickens and other animals but is applicable to plants too.
FPJ or Fermented Plant Juice had also been innovated upon. Many plants and vegetables studied
recently and found to be nutrient dense are now
being advocated for use as materials for fermentation. There are also farmers who combine both
plants and fruits for a combination of fermented
plant and fruit juices which they claim produce
more enzymes and easily available nutrients. Best
13
combination is the use of malunggay (moringa)
and banana or pineapple. There is also the combination of “iba” and moringa which is also effective especially during summer.
Aside from the usual fish used in Fish Amino Acid,
many are now trying pest fishes like the janitor
fish which has now invaded rivers and streams
causing the reduction of other more economically
important species because janitor fish eat the egg
masses thus causing drastic reduction of the
population of these economically important species. Some are also trying kuhol and African giant
Snails for use in amino acid preparation but
mainly for crops and not for animals since there
are findings that these species are carriers of diseases affecting chickens and other livestock.
Use of herbs and other plants:
The wide use of herbs ais also now being promoted. Herbs like oregano, basil, thyme, fennel
and tarragon are being planted not only as spice
but also as remedies for various ailments affecting chickens. Protein rich plants like madre de
agua, ipil-ipil and madre de cacao are being promoted as additional sources of feeds for poultry.
Non traditional grains like sorghum are likewise
being promoted because of their nutritive value
and the ease by which they can be grown.
Other innovations:
Farmers are also innovating in other aspects like
housing and rearing. Range growing is now popular and is widely adopted by those growing chickens organically. Before the actual rearing however, the area is prepared well by planting forage
grasses and other nutritious plants so that the
chickens can freely graze and look for other food
like insects, worms, earth worms and other nutritious organisms. These feed materials can help
minimize feed expenses of farmers.
Integration as the key to overall productivity:
Farmers concede that by raising many animals
and growing a diverse array of crops will lessen
the risk and create complementation among the
different projects within the farm. By raising
chickens and other animals, the farmer becomes
less dependent on fertilizers bought from the
stores. Manures can be turned into organic fertilizers which he can use or sell to other farmers.
When farmers diversify, he has less chances of
being manipulated by the market because when
one crop is down, his other crops will help in generating income for him.
The wide use of herbs is also now being promoted. For
feeds and remedies of chicken ailments.
