To All the Fellows of the Indian Chemical Society and Fellow Chemists of all Academic Institutes Dear Colleagues, This is to bring to your kind attention that as in the previous years the Annual Convention of Chemists is being organised this year also. The Department of Chemistry, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, Haryana has kindly agreed to host the Convention (51st Annual Convention of Chemists 2014) during the period December 09–12, this year. The Convention would consist of scientific sessions that will include several Endowment and Invited Lectures, besides presentation of contributory papers. The Society intends particularly to encourage the budding young chemists of our country by organising special award sessions to accommodate the contributions by the young scientists. We believe that the Convention would provide an effective platform for exchange of thoughts among the participating chemists which would generate newer ideas and open up new fields of research. We earnestly hope that chemists from all parts of our country will participate in this Convention to make it a grand success. The relevant information regarding the Convention is furnished in the sequel. With regards, Yours sincerely, Professor D. C. [6] ABOUT KURUKSHETRA The holy city, Kurukshetra where the epic war of Mahabharata was fought, has borne the imprints of Lord Krishna's lotus feet. At this place, the celestial song of Bhagavada Gita was addressed to Arjuna by Lord Krishna. It is an important pilgrim-station of the Hindus because of association of this place with triumph of Good over Evil; the city is referred as Dharmakshetra in the very first verse of the Bhagvad Gita. Since times immemorial, Kurukshetra has also been the venue of the great purification ceremonies for Moksha for pilgrims from the corners of the country. The region boasts of about 360 tirthas mentioned in ancient Hindu texts. It is said that a great merit accrues if some rituals are performed here. The dip in Brahmsarovar on solar eclipse brings in the merits of thousands of Ashwamedha Yagnas. Guru Nanak Dev in his journeys visited this place on the occasion of the eclipse. Guru Amar Das also visited this place. The object of the visit of the Sikh Gurus was the spiritual amelioration of the masses. Kurukshetra has also Islamic sites dating from the mediaeval period, the most prominent one being the tomb of the Sufi Saint Sheikh Chaheli. Besides these sites of religious interest, Kurukshetra also has several museums and archeological sites that showcase our vast and varied heritage. Not to be missed is the artistically designed 'Light and Sound' show at Jyotisar on the eternal message of the Gita whose dramatic quality takes one to higher plane of understanding of human existence. The Visit to Kurukshetra makes everyone feel physically refreshed, mentally rejuvenated, culturally enriched and spiritually elevated. The lingering memories impel one to come to Kurukshetra again and again. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY Located in Kurukshetra, the land of Bhagwad Gita, Kurukshetra University is a premier institute of higher learning in India. It is spread over 400 acres of land on the south bank of the holy Brahmsarovar. Its foundation stone was laid on 11th January 1957 by Bharat Ratna Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of the Indian Republic. Since then it has aimed at pursuing excellence in teaching and research in science, technology, humanities, social sciences, performing arts and sports. Today, Kurukshetra University is offering world-class education to students from throughout India and other countries by providing a learning experience designed to develop intellectual abilities, as well as social, moral and ethical values. The University is equipping its students with the skills, insights, attitudes and practical experience that enable them to become discerning citizen. The University's programs combine the enduring value of a liberal arts education with skills and experience offered by professional departments. The University has 450 faculty members. The University also has 457 affiliated colleges and institutes in the Districts of Panchkula, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Yamuna Nagar, Karnal, Panipat, Kaithal, Jind and Hisar. The campus of the University equipped with Wi-Fi facility, has often been rated as one of the most beautiful University campuses in India. The most remarkable feature of [7] the campus is the seamless interconnection of nature and the built environment. There are a number of lush green gardens/parks which provide an ideal environment on the campus for study and leisure. The university has also received prestigious 'Green Campus of the Year 2010' award from the World Management Congress, New Delhi. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY The Department of Chemistry is one of the oldest postgraduate Departments and its establishment date back to1961 when the status of Kurukshetra University was raised to a multi facility institution. Right from its inception, the Department has been fortunate enough to have got dedicated and hard working teachers at the helm of affairs to guide and shape its destiny. It has been the proud privilege of the University in general, and the Department in particular, when Professor S. M. Mukherji, FNA an eminent chemist, accepted the offer to become the first head of the Department in 1961. The growth of the Department can be gauged from the fact that it has produced more than 250 Ph.D.'s and published over 1800 research papers in the national and international journals of repute. The Department of Chemistry is vital, expanding hub of scientific inquiry with deep historic roots. The department is well known for its research activities and has very well equipped research laboratories. The faculty and students work at the frontiers of Science where the lines between chemistry and other disciplines merge. They conduct collaborative, interdisciplinary research targeting the synthesis and devising of advanced models of catalysis and innovative materials. The main areas of research include : Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Green Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Photochemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Heterocyclic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Ultrasonics, Chemical Thermodynamics and Bio-inorganic Chemistry.
