HIGHLAND SCOTCH
MACALLAN 62 YEAR OLD IN LALIQUE
This collection has inspired interest from connoisseurs and collectors since
its inception in 2005, representing a marriage of the finest and rarest
Macallan single malt whiskies and bespoke designed decanters, interpreting
Macallan’s Six Pillars, from the master crystal craftsmen at Lalique, limited to
only 400 individually numbered decanters.
Inside the rare crystal is a magnificent 62 year old scotch, originally filled in
American oak sherry-seasoned casks in November 1950. This is the secondoldest single malt released by Macallan since its foundation in 1824.
Rich and aromatic, an initial burst of treacle and toffee opens up to uncover
raisin and blood orange and, deeper still, aromas of apple sprinkled with
ginger, cinnamon and chocolate. Layers of dark vanilla are embellished by
soft burnished oak. Rich dried fruits then present themselves, with raisin
strongly to the fore. Then come long and embracing viscous layers of sweet
ginger, figs and cigar leaf, before the oak emerges, polished yet showing the
complexity of age.

stood in the glass for ten minutes...”

BRORA 35 YEAR OLD
Brora 35 has creamy top notes of vanilla-custard
above a herbal note and a sharper, cereal base,
all suffused with just a thread of smoke. The
nutty, waxy notes sweeten into honeycomb
and toasted coconut. It has good texture and a
surprising taste: much sweeter than you expect
from the nose. With water added it’s a very
easy-drinking, rewarding dram; fuller in texture
than when at full strength. Wood smoke lingers
in the complex, fresh and spicy conclusion.

BENRIACH VESTIGE 46 YEAR OLD
When BenRiach became independent in 2004, the new owners inherited a
handful of casks from 1966 – the oldest stock in the distillery’s warehouses. By
the end of 2012, just two of those casks remained and Billy Walker selected
one of those casks, BenRiach 1966 cask #2381, to be bottled as “Vestige.” The
whisky is classic Speyside in style, matured in a traditional hogshead. Bottled
at cask strength, it was distilled and filled to cask on the 21st of September
1966, after 46 years of maturation. The cask generated just 62 bottles. Vestige
has been so named because it represents a moment in time, a small trace of
something very special that, once lost, can never be replaced.
Fresh, clean, fruity components leap from the glass. Pineapple, coconut
and ripe guava scents interact with one another to create a fabulous fruit
cocktail. This gives way to very alluring freshly cut meadow flowers and
fine toasted oak followed by an explosion of ripe, luxurious fruit and sweet
toasted oak, topped with vanilla cream. The fruit takes centre stage with an
abundance of soft white summer fruits – peaches, apricots and ripe pears.
This is further enhanced with fresh coconut qualities. To end: exceptional
length with timeless elegance.

GLENGLASSAUGH 40 YEAR OLD
“The kind of oak you’d expect at this age ... but there is so much else on the
fruity front besides; grape, over-ripe yam, fat cherries...And then there is
a Bourbony element with molassed hickory and sweetened vanilla; wake
me, I must be dreaming...on second thoughts, don’t; pure silk on delivery. All
the flavours arrive in one rich wave of consummate sweetness, a tapestry
celebrating the enormity of both the fruit and oak; on the fruity front there
are juicy dates mulched with burned raisin; it is as if this malt has gone
through a 40 year marrying process; the interlinking of flavours and styles is
truly beyond belief.”

ROSEBANK 21 YEAR OLD EXECUTIVE DECISION DOUGLAS LAING
This Lowland distillery was mothballed in 1993. Due to this the whisky from
Rosebank is sought after and highly collectable. There are not many Lowland
distilleries to start with so the closing of Rosebank upped the region’s value
even more.
Distilled 1992, it opens clean and fresh, carrying a fruity, sweet, candy quality
plus a light honey and vanilla character. Initially peppery in style, it then
mouth-coats with a cornucopia of spiced, macerated, fresh fruit. The finish is
long, carrying a sweetly gristed character that runs drier and spiced to a more
oaky style.

TAIWANESE WHISKY
KAVALAN SHERRY OAK
“Thick, uncompromising, megagraped, and nutty while gently
spiced. A lovely strand of molassed
mocha and strawberry, too; soft,
silky delivery – with certain but
unmistakable shades of a big,
coffee-laden, Guyana rum – with
some bigger spice now; the grape
uncompromisingly dominates until
the middle. Even so, the ability for
the juicier and more treacle-led
sugars to sing clearly is outstanding;
dries as oloroso tends to, and dies
to a more intense oak; that heavy
roast coffee lasts the distance with
ease; the type of sherry-heavy malt
not uncommonly found on Speyside
over 20 years ago before the quality
if the butts nosedived dramatically...
What a rare treat; not too rare in
future one hopes!”

peated to 59.6 parts per million. Limited to 6700
bottles, it was mainly aged in bourbon barrels,
but also for a smaller share in port casks. On the

NIKKA COFFEY MALT
Zesty, lively and tart, this Japanese malt has fine
pepper notes and a hint of balsamic vinegar with
wafts of softer vanilla scents on the nose. On the
palate, its vivacity is sustained by citrus which
challenges more enticing notes of coffee, praline,
and vanilla cream. Surprisingly, prune, mirabelle and
greengage aromas develop, reminiscent of an eaude-vie. Licorice makes a brief appearance before the
fruit takes centre stage on the finish.

NIKKA COFFEY GRAIN
This Grain Whisky is distilled in a “Coffey still,”
a very traditional and rare patent still Nikka
imported from Scotland in 1963. The Coffey still
produces a complex whisky with a mellow and
sweet taste originating from the grain itself.
Fresh and enticing, it reveals ripe pear, cherry
and exotic fruit aromas. Citrus notes of blood
orange and lemon appear, slowly giving way to
more subtle floral scents. With air, aromas of
pastry, coconut and bourbon vanilla emerge, with
underlying notes of mint and a hint of musk. Juicy
and pleasant, the promises of the nose are kept,
delivering intense ripe fruit with banana rum and
caramel accents. The complexity develops with
hints of licorice and star anise. The mid-palate
shows more fruit, dominated by pear nectar and
quickly moving on to creamier notes with an
omnipresent freshness. The finish features pear
and vanilla bourbon, ending on a very nice light
bitter touch.

“Pretty effortlessly classic: a friendly layering of
crisp sugars and teasing spice as well as a thin hint
of mint and eucalyptus; the natural vanillas are out

just enough clout to ensure the sugars remain in
check and on the Demerara side of things...with the
sweetness in harmony with the butterscotch tart
and late peppery bite; from first nose, to last, the
exemplary high quality of this bourbon is not for a
