#LoveMyLARC Join Us for the 3

#LoveMyLARC
Join Us for the 3rd Annual LARC Awareness Week November 16-22, 2014
With health care reform implemented over the last year, millions of women gained, and will continue gaining, access to
health coverage that includes an array of women’s preventative health services at no-cost. These services include all
FDA-approved contraception including long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods like IUDS and the implant.
LARCs are the most effective forms of birth control available today. With an almost 99% rate of effectiveness, LARCs
have the potential to significantly reduce unintended pregnancies in the United States. While the use of LARCs is at an
all-time high, women with the highest risk of unintended pregnancy are less likely to use them. We can and should do
more to increase awareness about LARCs, particularly now that cost barriers will be removed for many.
California Family Health Council (CFHC) is proud to be hosting the 3rd annual LARC Awareness Week November 16-22,
2014.
We would love to have your organization sign-on this year as a LARC Awareness Week co-sponsor. Sponsoring
organizations will be expected to share at least one of the following LARC Awareness Week resources through their
communications platforms and networks and will be listed in all LARC AWARENESS WEEK materials.

What is a LARC?
LARCs or Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives include IUDs, the Mirena and Paraguard, as well
as the implant, Implanon. These birth control methods last between three and ten years and
are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy 1.
What is LARC Awareness Week?
LARC Awareness Week is a chance to increase awareness about LARCs as a safe, effective, and
long-acting birth control method. The theme for this year is “Love My LARC” and it will give
women an opportunity to share why they love their LARCs with video messages sent in through
various social media platforms.
Why LARCs?
Unintended pregnancy rates in the United States continue to be higher than other
industrialized nations. In 2006, 49% of all pregnancies were unintended, 2 costing taxpayers $11
billion annually3. Contraception is one of the most cost effective ways to reduce unplanned
pregnancy. With an over 99% rate of effectiveness, LARCs can significantly reduce the rate of
unintended pregnancy among women in the United States.
LARCs are long lasting, highly effective, and reversible, making them ideal for preventing
pregnancy. Once inserted by a clinician, LARCs do not require further maintenance. This
reduces the risk of improper use that may lead to an unintended pregnancy. LARCs offer birth
control that women can forget all about.
