SUN CATCHER DEADLINE Just a reminder to everyone who submits articles for the Sun Catcher: the deadline is the 12th of the month. This deadline was arrived at to insure that all homeowners receive the publication in a timely manner. This allows residents to plan and participate in the next month’s activities. Ideally articles would be submitted as a Word Document attachment to an email. If you aren’t able to submit it in that format, you can also submit it on a disk. Please keep the article to 250 words or less. Please email all articles to [email protected] Thank you for your cooperation BOARD MESSAGE By Gloria Harris We are looking forward to the Annual Meeting on Wednesday, November 5 at 6:00 p.m. It is great to meet again at our Village Center due to the expansion of the Fiesta Room. It is convenient for the residents and employees as well, not having to bring so many items to Twin Peaks Auditorium for this event. Please support your new Board and remember they are volunteers that your vote placed in the office. Continue to attend the Board Meetings and voice your opinion and/or make suggestions. As out going President, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve you this past year. GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT By Melissa Low It’s an exciting time of year. We will be welcoming some new board members, the Annual Members Meeting is taking place on November 5th, many residents that we haven’t seen for a while have returned, the holidays are around the corner and 2014 is almost over! The Village Center is very busy this time of year. A question that has come up again recently is how to handle folks who do not live in Sunflower and want to participate in functions or use a specific part of the facility such as playing tennis or cards or billiards. In accordance with the association’s policies and rules, all guests should sign in at the front desk and present a valid guest card in order to use the facilities. This requirement may be waived for some organized, pre-approved events such as the Senior Olympics Bocce Tournament and Tennis Club Tournaments. Guest cards may be purchased at the front desk by homeowners or registered renters. If there are any questions regarding this, please don’t hesitate to contact the front desk staff or the GM. Another question that has resurfaced is how to use the swimming pools at the Continental Ranch facilities. Sunflower homeowners are entitled to use the pools at both CRCA facilities when they are open. We were given the following instruction from CRCA Management, “Sunflower residents who want to use the CRCA pool will need to come to the CRCA office during business hours with ID showing that they are residing in Sunflower. Our staff will open the gate to let them into the pool area. For weekend use, Sunflower residents can make arrangements in advance with our office to check out a pool key for the weekend….. The Board took into consideration that there may be temporary circumstances when Sunflower residents might want to use the CRCA pool (versus regular use), and the Board approved granting Sunflower residents use of the CRCA pool for 2-weeks per year, per property. Any additional use beyond the 2-weeks will require payment of the Special Use Fee…..”. NOTARY SERVICE AVAILABLE By Melissa Low Our bookkeeper, Linda Parent, is commissioned to perform notary services for our Sunflower residents. Please feel free to contact her directly at 572-9780 ext. 17 to set up an appointment. There is no charge for Sunflower residents; appointments required. Please remember to bring your government issued identification (drivers license, passport, state ID, etc.) Do not sign your document before your appointment; your signature must be verified in front of the notary. Linda cannot notarize anything that has been signed before the visit. No exceptions. Dottie Hoover has coordinated this event twice a year (Spring and Fall) for the past 6 years. This event featuring live bands has been provided to our community for their enjoyment on the back patio and grass area with no admission charge. This event has grown from about 75-100 guests the first year to upwards of 300 guests for the last few events. These events have been very popular and have become a tradition here at Sunflower. As Dot is ready to retire from hosting this event, a new Host or Hostess is needed so she is asking anyone who is interested to contact her at either 744-0915 or to email her at [email protected] Without someone to coordinate this event, it will not continue so please consider contacting Dottie. She has already started on next year’s events but needs to work with whoever wants to take this over to finalize the details. Please let the front desk staff know if you can help with this project. Page 8 FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT By Shirley Bailey, chair Our committee reports to the Board and we do make recommendations/proposals on current actions. We do not have a voting right on the Board. Meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of the month in the Fiesta room at 9:30 a.m. ….all are welcome. Our purpose is to review the financial statements for operations, reserve funds, and charter clubs. Our primary responsibility is to see that the reserve fund balance is sufficient to pay for asset replacements/ improvements. On the flip side, we look at the revenue coming in plus CDs maturing out of reserve funds as a future means for sustaining any new purchases or improvements to our assets. The Finance Committee had been reviewing all the contract bids in the past but as a group, we have no real knowledge of the contract specifics. Our concern is that the total dollars spent falls within our reserve guidelines. At our September meeting, we approved a proposal that was presented at the October Board meeting, asking the Board to give the PRAC committee the ability to review all contract bids and include high dollar work orders. At the meeting, one of the future expenses that the Board designated for PRAC review was the replacement of the pool filters at a cost between $6.8k and $8k. We support PRAC as a second set of eyes for the community at large. Come see who we are…. Tentative date is November 26 at 9:30 a.m. or check the Communicator! Welcome New Board Members! Page 10 DONATIONS FOR THE TROOPS By Don Seymour ARTISTS GALLERY By Sam Florek The Sunflower Veterans Club is continuing a project to provide support to military troops serving in Afghanistan and in remote outposts. (See www.anysoldier.com) We are very fortunate that our October Show by artist Don Weber will be up for another month. We have received so many positive comments on this show. It is very different than many of our previous shows and people have commented that they really enjoyed seeing this different art medium. A box is set up in the Village Center lobby until the first week in December accepting donated items. The Veterans Club will arrange packaging and shipping. Cash donations will be accepted by the Veterans Club Treasurer. WHAT TO DONATE? Snacks and Food items, Dry, Canned or Packaged * Beef jerky, canned or dried Tuna, Salmon, dried fruit * Energy Bars (Very popular for troops on patrol.) * Trail Mix, Nut mixes * Potato Chips, corn chips (in containers, like Pringles) * Hard candy, gum (No chocolate, it melts!) * Pretzels, crackers * Microwaveable meals, popcorn, Ramen noodles * Dry Flavor packets for water bottles * Instant Coffee or Tea I believe that some of us have never seen impasto paintings. He is correct that these painting catch and reflect more of the ambient or diffused light possibly just a little better than some standard flat-brushed paintings. The combination of the impasto painting with the new (and experimental) 3-D acrylic painting techniques is definitely very creative. We always enjoy the art exhibits—we are so lucky to have so many talented people in Sunflower. We are fortunate that these talented people are willing to have art exhibits. It is a great deal of work to prepare for an art show, hang the show, take it down, etc. The final show of the year will be by Lilly Brooks. There is a listing in this publication of our artists for 2015. We still have two openings if you would like to have a show. Hygiene and Comfort Items * Soap, shampoo, travel size toothpaste & brushes, deodorant, razors, detergent pods * Female hygiene items, pearls, etc. * Baby wipes (They use these a lot!) * Magazines, books, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, playing cards * Batteries * Pens, paper, miscellaneous writing supplies * Sheets (bunk size), pillow cases * Socks * Sun screen * Phone Cards * Used or New DVD movies or music CDs are much appreciated PLEASE DO NOT DONATE THESE ITEMS: * Alcohol * Pork Products * X Rated material * Religious items Page 11 CUISINE EVENTS NOVEMBER LADIES LUNCHEON By Irene Wittmann CULINARY CLUB MEMBERSHIP DRIVE By Carol Taylor, President BLUEFIN SEAFOOD BISTRO Casa Adobes Plaza Ina & Oracle Our club membership started in October. BACCHUS WINE By Sandy Persels “. . . ghoulies and ghosties and longleggedy beasties. And things that go bump in the night. . . .” were featured at the Halloween event, Spooky Spirits and Frightening Finger-foods. Attendees scared up some really weird wine labels and paired the wines with some devilishly disgusting “appetizers.” A spooktacular time was had by all! Bacchus Wine is all about having a good time learning more about wine and sharing fun times with friends. Usually we meet in the Fiesta Room on the fourth Wednesday of the month; occasionally, we will visit a restaurant or winery for a special pairing or tasting. Some of our events are kind of educational; some, like the Halloween party, are pure silliness, but they’re all enjoyable. If you would like to join us for future happenings, just get your name on the mailing list to receive advance notice of upcoming plans. Send your name and e-mail address to Mary Laurie Siebert [email protected] or phone her at 744-3176. We look forward to welcoming new members! Ghouls just wine to have fun! ~ without apology to Robert Hazard and Cyndi Lauper Page 12 WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2014 Time 12:00 Tickets: $21.00 pp includes tax & gratuity, entrée and choice of Coffee, Tea, Iced Tea or Soda. Sunflower Men: join us for good food and interesting conversations. So we may give Shooter’s an accurate count, please sign up at the Village Center by noon, Tuesday, November 11th. KOMEDY KORNER From the ROMEOs We’ve had a number of requests to repeat this ‘KOMEDY KORNER’ from the past!! Last time I looked, three is still a number. At last November’s ROMEO lunch, a ROMEO sat grinning from ear to ear. When asked why, he said that he had called his daughter that morning. This is the rest of his story. “I told her that her mother and I were getting divorced. She said, ‘but Daddy, you and Mom have been married nearly 50 years.’ I know, but we’re getting divorced. She said, ‘I am calling my brother and I’ll call you back.’ We still look forward to hearing from the people who would like to host the December and January coffees. If you are a new resident in the community, it is a wonderful way to meet some of your neighbors. It isn’t a difficult job—really it is fun! Please stop by the front desk and let us know when you will volunteer. Saturday morning is a relaxing event. If you have never attended, please stop by some morning at 8:00 a.m. The, donuts are fresh, the coffee is always hot and we also have tea. In addition, we supply jelly, cream cheese and butter for you bagel lovers. There is a small charge to cover the cost of refreshments. In October we had a nice treat—the Hlas who have been long time Sunflower residents have decided to move to the Fountains. They stopped by to say goodbye and had many positive things to say about our community. The beautiful fresh flowers that you always saw at the front desk were provided by the Hlas. We will miss the flowers and we definitely will miss San & Kyi Kyi Hla. LADIES NINE HOLE GOLF On behalf of our members, we wish to extend our condolences to the family and friends at the passing of Philip Mullaly, a long time member and supporter of the SMGC. Thanks to Tom Beecher for arranging our “Fall Getaway” to Sedona where we had a tournament with 11 contestants at 3 courses. Congratulations to SMGC member Keith Leikel for his 1st place finish with combined lowest net for the three events. The four wives who attended had a wonderful time sightseeing, shopping and eating. SMGC is back to mostly full strength with the return of most of our “Snow Birds”! A hearty welcome back! The president, Mike Clapham, with the help of the scheduling committee, has completed the scheduling for our courses through February 2015 and they are on the website, ready for signups. Our 2nd annual meeting will be announced shortly and held in December. This will be the SMGC election meeting. The club continues to play 18 hole events twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. We’re always looking to add to our membership and hope that you will consider us if you enjoy playing once or twice per week at courses scheduled six months in advance. We like to play by the rules, which our members find authenticates golf as a sport, game and exercise! See our site and venues at the link below. www.azgolf.golffusion.com/sunflowergolfclub The Desert Ladies Nine Hole Golf Group will meet at 1:30 p.m. tee time. All lady golfers are welcome regardless of your expertise. You will find that it is an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon at the beautiful Quarry Pines. Bring a friend. PICKLEBALL NEWS By Carolyn Hutt The weather is finally getting cooler! Now is the perfect time to call or text me to arrange a time to check out this fun game. Monday—Saturday 1 p.m. I can’t set any definite early evening playing times as this article is going to print because of different tennis events on our shared courts. Please call or text me at: 419-6369. I will be delighted to give you accurate information on times and days courts are available and ready for play. Page 15 TENNIS CLUB Phil Hall & Thea Berg We welcome the return of Tennis Club snowbirds, and any new players who wish to play doubles. “Sunflower Mixed Doubles” continues at 8:00 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Women play Tuesday and Thursday. This is fun social tennis where you rotate positions after each game. An advantage of playing in this time slot is that you may come and leave as you wish. For regular scheduled doubles, please contact Susan Page at [email protected] or 742-1373. Sunflower women’s INTERCLUB & USTA teams got underway in October and continue. Dates are on the bulletin board. Spectators are welcome, so come support our Sunflowers who are sporting new yellow and white outfits. (See photo.) Also, our “ACE MY LACES” team competed in the 3rd Annual Meet/Play/ Love Tennis tournament Oct 26-29 in Tucson - a national event. Our team members are good will ambassadors for Sunflower, traveling to every tennis club in metropolitan Tucson and hosting their teams here. Amazingly, most visiting opponents have never heard of Sunflower. We seize the opportunity to show them around, and they are truly impressed! Tennis players mix easily because USTA - the governing body of tennis in the US - matches age and skill levels, and players conform to the code of behavior and rules of play. BOWLING NEWS By Faythe Mattern We are officially in fall and cooler temperatures have revisited Tucson. We should be seeing our “Snow Birds” returning soon! Several of our bowlers have had lots of “red” in the high game and series categories! High games went to Jerry Burton 141, Billy Swartz 201, and Judy Migneault with a 207. High series numbers went to Linda Ottley 234, Billy Swartz 451 and 525, and Judy Migneault with an impressive 590. It’s nice to see Jerry Burton bowling again. However, Evie insisted on beating Jerry’s high series of 402 with her own 461. Congratulations to all! There have been a lot of odd splits lately. I’m sure it’s not how we bowl but rather a problem that Fiesta Lanes needs to rectify! However, Linda Ottley and Chuck Glen seemed to have no problem in picking a 6 -7-10 and 5-10 split, respectfully. I know there are other bowling achievements that should be included but I’m not always aware of them. So please help me by writing them down and giving it to me after bowling. News flash! You know how Janet Sergission works so hard to pick the lone “7” pin? Well, Bob just bought her a new bowling ball which is specially designed to get those pesky “7” pins to fall over. Maybe Bob will do the same for the rest of us. We bowl Friday afternoons at Fiesta Lanes. Please arrive by 12:40 p.m. for a 1:00 p.m. start. Call Irene Harvey (579-0139) with any questions. PING PONG GROUP By Buzz Hoffmann We would love to have new players join us for ping pong on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. All playing levels, including beginners, are welcome for a fun time of ego-free and oftentimes aerobic ping pong. We have known for years that working crossword puzzles and listening to Mozart are good for the brain. Ping pong (table tennis) may well be the world’s best brain sport. Our playing times may vary so check the Fitness schedule in the Sun Catcher. TRIVIAL PURSUIT AND MORE By Paula Hernandez Several years ago a resident introduced a new game into the Trivial Pursuit group and we all enjoyed it. Since variety is the spice of life, it's time to revisit the idea of a new game occasionally to mix things up. So be flexible and come and enjoy the camaraderie of folks getting together and enjoying challenges to our aging brains. We usually meet the first and third Thursdays of the month at 6 p.m. but please check the calendar as this can change. ACTIVITIES & CLUBS SUNFLOWER ART CLUB By Barbara Strempek The Sunflower Art Club will begin meeting on Wednesday, November 5 in the Craft Room from 9 a.m. until noon. You can come and go any time you want. There is no instructor. We are a group of artists who enjoy painting together and helping each other. Bring whatever medium you prefer. We have plastic sheets available to cover the tables. The members range from beginning to experienced artists. Usually, one of the members is in the room at 9 a.m. If not, go ahead and start painting. Need more information...call me 572-1906. Page 16 ARTS AND CRAFTS CLUB By Jeanne M. Collins Our Arts and Crafts Club meetings started back on October 6. It was an enjoyable start to our season with everyone sharing their stories of their summer vacations. It was also the perfect opportunity to plan events for the upcoming season. We stayed with the fall theme and made really charming renuzit witches and pumpkins. In November we’ll be making decoupage plates and hope to work on a glass etching project. Come make some new friends. We continue to meet each Monday in the Craft Room at 10:00 a.m. and there will be a list of upcoming projects with a supply list posted on the cork strip. Not a member, that’s OK, just come and visit with our friendly group. If you decide to join us, the annual fee is only $5.00. Don’t forget the Fine Arts and Crafts Festival is November 7th and 8th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. CASINO CLUB By Margaret O’Connell Continuing our casino trips--- our next trip will be back to Wild Horse Casino on Monday, November 10, 2014. Cost is $2 (which includes driver tip and game on the bus.) The outlet mall is open across the parking lot. There is a walking path as well as a free shuttle that circles around. We do need a minimum of 45 people to make this happen. Assuming, of course, that we’re not diverted elsewhere…The casino will give everyone a $10 gaming voucher and a $5 food voucher because it’s Senior Day. They have some $100 drawings during the day as well. Hope to see you on the bus! Always bring your ID card (in case you win over $1000—or you forget your player’s card). It’s important to use the slot card so the casino can see that we use the comps they give us and continue to provide the bus transportation. **If you have signed up for a casino trip and later find you can’t go, please remember to let the people at the front desk know as soon as possible so we can accommodate people on the waiting list. INNOVATIVE DANCE Phyllis Bowcott and Barbara Bell Taylor Phyllis and Barbara are pairing up again for a new year of innovative dance and creative exercise. Many thanks to all the people who brought delicious food items to share and a special thank you to our hosts Elaine and Joe. We have a very exciting two months coming up! On Sunday, November 9th, at 2:00 p.m. we will be treated to a talk and visual presentation by author James M. Deem. He has written over 2 dozen books for adults and young adults, both fiction and nonfiction. He will be speaking at next March’s Tucson Festival of Books, but we get to hear him first! He will tell us of his latest book, due out this spring, “The Prisoners of Breendonk,” about the inmates of a relatively unknown German concentration camp in Belgium. He spent many years doing research for this book and now it is being printed. Come hear about his research, and his reasons for writing this non-fiction work. Plus, his books make great holiday gifts for Chanukah and Christmas for young adults and older. Then in December, on the 16th (Tuesday evening) at 6:30 p.m., prepare to be so moved when you hear the Gatekeepers in concert. So save both dates, and join the Nibblers and Noshers Sunflower group for these two extraordinary programs. Naturally, everyone is welcome! Refreshments, too! SUNFLOWER QUILTERS Ahhh! November By Carolyn La Potin This month, Sunflower Quilters will be selling numerous quilted items at the Sunflower Arts and Crafts show on November 7 & 8. It will be a great opportunity for all to pick up some holiday gifts for family and friends. Shop early for the best selection! There will be two classes offered in November. Sharon Cockrell will be teaching us a unique two fabric bargello technique that looks far more intricate than it is and Janie Pelley will be teaching her sweat shirt class. The possibilities for wearable creations are endless! Members - be sure to sign up if you are interested in either or both. Of course there will be time to continue our community quilting projects and for BYOP (Bring your own project) too! All residents are welcome and encouraged to check out what we are doing. Prospective and new members are welcome each Thursday or Friday morning from 9:00-noon at the Center. If you don’t have a sewing machine, we have two that are available for you to use at the Center during our quilting sessions. Come and join the fun! SINGLES AND FRIENDS By Ellen Bowlby Here we are with Thanksgiving just around the corner. The Singles and Friends are going to be celebrating this holiday on November 15 with a “Pilgrims’ Potluck.” The evening will begin with the social hour at 5:30 p.m. and followed by dinner and entertainment. At the time you buy your ticket, you will also sign up to bring a side dish (salad, vegetable, or dessert). The time for all days will be 10:00 a.m. to noon. At the time this article was being written, negotiations were still underway for the entertainment so when settled, the information will be on the poster. Everyone who came to our Great Gatsby costume party had a good time whether they were in costume or not. There were some creative costumes. This party was open to the community at large and the ones who attended saw what a good time was had by the Singles and Friends. Keep your eyes on the Sun Catcher for information on future events. THE SUNFLOWER READERS' CLUB NEWS By Elizabeth Gunn The Sunflower Readers’ Club will meet as usual on the first Tuesday of November, at 7 p.m. in the Village Center. Anyone who likes this book is welcome to join us. Page 19 SUNBIRD CAMPERS/RV CLUB By Joe Yearous November is here and all club members are urged to note the changes in our business meeting times and dates in November and December. Due to the Sunflower Arts and Crafts Show, the business meeting has been moved to Wednesday, November 5th at 1:00 p.m. at the Village Center and in order to not overload Thanksgiving week, the Happy Hour will be on November 21st. The business meeting in December will be combined with the monthly social for an early afternoon luncheon at Mimi’s on December 5th. You will need to contact me to make reservations for the December event. January will bring us back to our regular scheduled meeting dates and times. As the Holiday Season gets rolling, perhaps it is time to think about the true meaning of some of these holidays. Webster’s dictionary defines Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday set apart for giving thanks to God. We are truly blessed to have the many privileges that we have in this country and the many freedoms. I hope that everyone can enjoy the month and the day! All are welcome! VINTAGE GARDENERS By Jan Leth Our “welcome back” November 21st meeting will feature Patricia Derridder who will speak about and demonstrate the Japanese art of flower-arranging called IKEBANA. “What is Ikebana?” you ask. If you've ever placed a single flower stem in a vase and admired the simplicity of your design, you will appreciate the clean lines and understated beauty of Ikebana flower arrangements. With all the busyness in our lives, the art of simplifying is appealing... right? Ikebana has its roots in 6th Century Buddhism which was practiced in Japan. Temple priests offered these simple flower arrangements to honor their ancestors. Our speaker Ms. Derridder was born in Belgium and lived for 15 years in Japan, where she attended the Ikenobo School of Ikebana. She currently owns and operates the Yume Japanese Gardens in Tucson. Vintage Gardener Members are invited to learn and enjoy the program.....you can join or renew your membership on Friday, November 21 at 2:30 p.m. in the Fiesta Room at the Village Center. Membership fee is $5. MEMBER ALERT!!! Be sure to mark Saturday, December 6 on your calendars! We’re thankful for the Sunflower residents who support our programs and visit our branch regularly. The next BIG SALE presented by the Friends of the Pima County Public Library is Saturday, November 1, 2014. In addition to the BIG SALE, you can also buy bargain books all year long in the back of the library near the Kids’ Place. Choose your books and deposit your money in the box on the shelf to help support the FREE programs presented by the Pima County Library. The Abbett Library always offers a wide selection of books, music, movies and audio books, many free services and there are always friendly, helpful library employees who will be happy to assist you. Come see what the library has to offer. Many of our residents have taken FREE, one on one i-device and computer classes and have been very happy with the instructors and results. MARANA COMMUNITY FOOD BANK By Armand LaPotin The generosity of our Sunflower Community neighbors and friends is AWESOME! Over the last year (10/1/13-10/1/14) you have given $1158 in cash contributions and donated 2138 lbs of food!! That’s over a ton of food for needy families in our area. As I noted before, most of our clients are working poor. Unfortunately the statistics haven’t improved much. Arizona’s unemployment rate is just under 6%, we still have a high rate of hunger among children in our area (any rate is too high), and our client base continues to grow about 12% a year. Although we all eat 365 days a year, holiday season is especially critical as it highlights the disparity between those who have plenty to eat and the malnourished among us. Please continue your generosity with food drives, placing canned and dried goods in boxes near the entrance to our Village Center. Peanut butter, canned fish and chicken are especially needed. Financial contributions are always appreciated. Every dollar that you contribute enables us to provide Four Meals to a family in need. If you wish to contribute by check, please make it out to MCFB. Bring it to the desk in the Village Center. Cash contributions can also be given at the front desk. God bless you all for your thoughtfulness!
