FINANCIAL MATTERS.
Dear valued club members.
As per the financial policy, the club is increasing its fees with inflation. We
have kept the increase to around 6% in line with the current CPIX rate
(Consumer Price Index). The club is as any organisation susceptible to
increases in our costs and we also have to be prudent and budget for
increases in costs. The only major change that I want to make the members aware of is that is
that the committee debated the issue around the pensioners’ discount of a quarter of our fee
(25% currently). As a very big portion of our members make use of the pensioner discount, the
decision was made to decrease the discount to 15%. I think this is not unreasonable. The other
important decision was made to charge our chapter members the full normal member fee and not
the country member fees. We do however give the chapters a rebate of this fee to use in their
own chapters for their members' direct benefit. All in all I think the club is still good value for
money as you get a well run and reputable club for a very reasonable fee. It is also very important
to bear in mind that each and every committee member gives up their own time and at no cost
and incur expenses that they pay for themselves. For this we committee members get a free
year’s club membership. Hardly an incentive but appreciated by the committee none the less.
I hope that this increase will be positively received and that members will pay their invoices as
soon as they get them. This is going to be another headache with the postal strike. If you still get
regular mail by post now is a good time to change to email and let the club know of your email
address.
The 2015 fees are:
Entrance Fee R275.00
Full year subscription Jan to December R395.00
Half year subscription July to December R295.00
Country member full year subscription R330.00
Country member half year subscription R240.00
Overseas members no fees applicable
Pensioners 15% discount on the subscription fee.

RADIO AFFAIRS
Warning
Members should take note that the ORRA User Authorities (radio license) are only valid in the RSA, and not in any neighboring
countries. This is especially true for Botswana as 1 of our frequencies is being used for their military application. If any member
wants to use their VHF radio at their own risk in Botswana, the following ORRA channels should be avoided at all cost.
New ORRA channels

ORRA 5

ORRA 6

ORRA 7
Members are encouraged to adhere to good radio protocol
RULE #1: Listen before you transmit.
RULE #2: Legally you are obliged to use call signs.
RULE #3: No one else can transmit while you are holding your push to talk button down. Be alert to
this.
RULE#4: Always keep a listening watch.
RULE#5: Speak across the microphone, not into it.
Also keep in mind that the ORRA frequencies and channels are shared across the 4x4 community, please refrain from using
bad language while on the air.
Children playing on the radio are also a problem and cause for frustration. Children should however be trained to use the 2way radio in case of an emergency.
Stay tuned

LROC DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
With modern cars becoming more and more electronically controlled with 1 or more computers doing all sorts of stuff, our
beloved Land Rovers are no more different. Even the modest Defender PUMA has more that one computer under its skin. This
situation and after 1 of the members, Darryl Beck, mentioned at the AGM that the club must give back to the club and not
accumulate too much money, the Comm decided to buy a diagnostic tool.
Now members have access to a diagnostic tool to read and clear error codes on their Landies. The tool will be under my
control, and it will be taken to club events. Just check with me beforehand if I will be attending that specific event. In an urgent
situation, special arrangements can be made with me to arrange checking a vehicle after hours and over weekends.
This tool is open for all Landies with a diagnostic port. The only 2 Landies that cannot be checked is the Disco 1 V8 with
14CUX management, and the Defender fitted with the 2.8i BMW engine.
Please note that NO programming will be done on members Landies, as such actions are best left to skilled and experienced
technicians. The diagnostic service will be limited to reading and clearing or error codes, performing of output tests and
checking of life data.

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE WITH A BOOK ON THE LROC
It’s been a dream of some of us to produce a book on the Club and it will really be great to realize that dream by producing a
book with the Club’s 55th Celebrations during 2015. The plan is to get a Sub-Comm together and then get things started with
the aim to have it published in time for the 2016 AGM, thereby including some of the events of 2015.
Possible chapters will be the Club’s history, extractions out of past Magazines and Newsletters, a chapter for all the Chapters
about their history, etc. Jan Vorster managed to put together a complete set of the Landroving Magazine and almost a
complete set of the Newsletters which will be a great source.
This will not be possible without the help of members. Some are already onboard but assistance is required on all levels e.g.:
writing, lay out, print, proof reading, etc. in order to produce something that we all can be proud of.
If you are interested, please contact me so that we can arrange for a get together, share some ideas and get it going.

BRIDGESTONE CHALLENGE FOR LROC BY WHEELS 24.COM
50-YEAR-OLD LANDY WINS 'MODERN' CHALLENGE
OFF-ROAD WINNER: Jaco van Zyl's 50-year-old Series 2A took overall honours at Round 9 of the 2014 Bridgestone 4x4 Club
Challenge on October 11
HARTEBEESPOORT, North West - Round 9 of the 2014 Bridgestone 4x4 Club Challenge, hosted at the Leeuwenkloof 4x4
facility near Hartebeespoort Dam, saw enthusiasts from the Land Rover Owners' Club of SA battle it out.
And a 50-year-old Landy take overall honours!
Competition was fierce because only a few places are left for the 2014 Club Challenge final in November.
The Land Rovers ranged from old classics to much younger models and the day got off to a serious start with a number of
steep and rocky climbs, followed by even steeper descents. The 110 Defenders struggled here – with their wide turning circle,
they had a tough time getting through some of the gates.
TOUGH OBSTACLES
And after fighting their way through the course the last series of obstacles proved that one can never let one's guard down in
this competition. The organisers said the driver had to stop next to a dam, get out of the vehicle and with one hand in contact
with the vehicle, move round to the passenger side (and the water), pick up five rocks and attempt to hit a pole with a carefully
aimed throw.
Each ‘hit’ was worth five bonus points and some of the more creative teams discovered the best way to get close to the pole
was to simply drive into the dam!
With the scores tallied, prize-giving saw the environmental prize – a R2000 voucher from Bridgestone – go to the event’s only
woman driver, Geraldine Cartwright.
Third place overall, and booking the first Landy seat in the 2014 Bridgestone 4x4 Club Challenge final, were Brian and Shelly
Cotton in their Defender pick-up. The Cottons won a Mean Green recovery kit from Opposite Lock.
SO MUCH FOR MODERN MACHINES...
Second place went to Bridgestone 4x4 veterans Adriaan Aucamp/Gerrit van Wyk in a Range Rover, winning themselves a set
of Opposite Lock driving lights.
LROC News – November 2014
Page 4
But in the most day's most surprising result, it was Jaco van Zyl's 50-year-old Series 2A that took overall honours with an
outstanding score of 885 points. With the win, Van Zyl, partnered by Wimpie van Zyl for this event, secured his spot in the final
and won a R10 000 tyre voucher from Bridgestone SA.
BRIDGESTONE CHALLENGE AND SPRING TRIAL 2014
Results of the Bridgestone and Spring Trial held at Leeuwenkloof 4th October 2014.
Below is the original score sheet used by the Bridgestone Marshalls. It only shows the actual scores on the obstacles and does
not show the penalties (or otherwise) from vehicle scrutinising or the points gained or lost on environmental scores. These
were entirely in the hands of the Bridgestone track officials.
Well done and a big thank you to all who participated and thanks to Bridgestone and their sponsors for the great
venue, meals and prizes that were handed out.
Many thanks to Alex Fladung,Philip Lochner,Bernard Cohen, Dax and Johan Stroebel who helped with the setup of the trial
and all the participants on the day for making the club stand tall.

LONG TRIP TO GONAREZHOU NATIONAL PARK.
Gonarezhou “The Place of Elephants”, what a fantastic place. In one visit we saw over a hundred elephants at the Machaniwa
Pan. It is amazing how such a large number can suddenly appear from the trees and then just as suddenly disappear. The
noise they made as they walked through the water of the pan made it sound like the water was flowing.
We camped for several nights at Hlaro, a campsite on the edge of the Runde River looking onto the Chilojo Cliffs and watched
the sun rise and sunset over the cliffs, a phenomenal sight. We travelled a few roads not frequently travelled and got chased
by a bull elephant on the road to the confluence of the Save and Runde rivers. We bush camped one night at Guluweni, a
transit camp that was a dry water hole with little shade. We contended with the heat, at least 42.5ºC on at least one day plus
the wind and the dust but thoroughly enjoyed it.
The stars of the trip have to be the children, Ewan Cotton and Myles and Katherine Penman, they seemed to take it all in their
stride. The down side was the drive back to the border at Beitbridge. We went through at least six road blocks and were all
subject to a fine of some sort.
There are many stories to tell and a magazine article to write but most will be told. We were a great group and had a great time
and have a bucket full of memories.
Cheers,
Dave Morgan
HERMAN CHARLES BOSMAN CULTURAL WEEK END OCTOBER 2014
Groot Marico, North West Province
19 LROC family members and their Landy’s enjoyed a delightful week end in the Marico district. Different to a “normal” LROC
week end away but definitely most entertaining and thought-provoking. All who attended were pleased to have a “cultural”
event and revive some of yesteryear in the memory of Herman Charles Bosman. In our mad Gauteng frenzy of rushing to
nowhere and forgetting the finer things in life, it’s heartening and inspiring to experience a completely different lifestyle that has
time for considering the real culture and concerns of our incredible country. (Also time for tasting a little well distilled Mampoer!)
Fittingly summed up by the great writer and poet himself of the Marico district –“There is no other place I know that is so heavy
with atmosphere, so strangely and darkly impregnated with that stuff of life that bears the authentic stamp of South-Africa”.

It is my sad duty to relay the news that Bill Caloccia, the creater of
ZA-LRO list, passed away this morning.
I know that I will be hoisting a sediment bowl of single malt in his honour tonight.
As for the future of this email list, last spring Bill came to me and we set up a contingency plan for this eventuality. I told him
that I didn't want the role for obvious reasons, but would step up when the time came.
I've been assisting with the admin work since then in the background.
The time came much sooner than we all expected.
Since I received the news today I have made a backup copy of the list members for this list and the other LR lists that Bill
hosted (LRO, RRO, UK-LRO, AU-LRO, ZA-LRO, IT-LRO, NL-LRO, and SIIclub). If his hosting machine falls over I can recreate the lists elsewhere.
