The final of the Bridgestone challenge was held at Doornrivier 4x4 in
Zeerust with ten club teams competing for the title. There were 10
obstacles set up. With the first three the competitors drove their own
vehicles and then a surprise was pulled out of the hat and they had to
drive a Ford Ranger for the next 6 and the last was own vehicle again.
As our team of three vehicles namely a Series 2 Diesel(Jaco van Zyl),a
Range Rover Classic(Adriaan Aucamp) and a 300tdi Defender
bakkie(Brian Cotton) only managed to complete 5 obstacles and the
event was rained out making the conditions impossible to continue and the organisers decided
that the scores would be decided on the 5 obstacles. It was a privilege to experience the driving
skills of our team with especially Jaco driving a 50 year old Land Rover which showed the other
vehicles with all the lockers, electronics and bells and whistles how capable it still is with good
driving skills.Jaco,Adriaan and Brian were the only drivers to get 100 points each on obstacle
2.Another bonus for our club was that Chris Foley got an award for his contribution with the
marshal unit. We wish to thank Guthrie Blaine of Bridgestone,OL Accessories and Conquerer
Trailers for a great event and sponsorship.

RADIO AFFAIRS
Warning
Members should take note that the ORRA User Authorities (radio license) are only valid in the RSA, and not in any neighboring
countries. This is especially true for Botswana as 1 of our frequencies is being used for their military application. If any member
wants to use their VHF radio at their own risk in Botswana, the following ORRA channels should be avoided at all cost.

Members are encouraged to adhere to good radio protocol
RULE #1: Listen before you transmit.
RULE #2: Legally you are obliged to use call signs.
RULE #3: No one else can transmit while you are holding your push to talk button down. Be alert to
this.
RULE#4: Always keep a listening watch.
RULE#5: Speak across the microphone, not into it.
Also keep in mind that the ORRA frequencies and channels are shared across the 4x4 community, please refrain from using
bad language while on the air.
Children playing on the radio are also a problem and cause for frustration. Children should however be trained to use the 2way radio in case of an emergency.

LROC DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
With modern cars becoming more and more electronically controlled with 1 or more computers doing all sorts of stuff, our
beloved Land Rovers are no more different. Even the modest Defender PUMA has more that one computer under its skin. This
situation and after 1 of the members, Darryl Beck, mentioned at the AGM that the club must give back to the club and not
accumulate too much money, the Comm decided to buy a diagnostic tool.
Now members have access to a diagnostic tool to read and clear error codes on their Landies. The tool will be under my
control, and it will be taken to club events. Just check with me beforehand if I will be attending that specific event. In an urgent
situation, special arrangements can be made with me to arrange checking a vehicle after hours and over weekends.
This tool is open for all Landies with a diagnostic port. The only 2 Landies that cannot be checked is the Disco 1 V8 with
14CUX management, and the Defender fitted with the 2.8i BMW engine.
Please note that NO programming will be done on members Landies, as such actions are best left to skilled and experienced
technicians. The diagnostic service will be limited to reading and clearing or error codes, performing of output tests and
checking of life data.

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE WITH A BOOK ON THE LROC
It’s been a dream of some of us to produce a book on the Club and it will really be great to realize that dream by producing a
book with the Club’s 55th Celebrations during 2015. The plan is to get a Sub-Comm together and then get things started with
the aim to have it published in time for the 2016 AGM, thereby including some of the events of 2015.
Possible chapters will be the Club’s history, extractions out of past Magazines and Newsletters, a chapter for all the Chapters
about their history, etc. Jan Vorster managed to put together a complete set of the Landroving Magazine and almost a
complete set of the Newsletters which will be a great source.
This will not be possible without the help of members. Some are already onboard but assistance is required on all levels e.g.:
writing, lay out, print, proof reading, etc. in order to produce something that we all can be proud of.
If you are interested, please contact me so that we can arrange for a get together, share some ideas and get it going.

Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find the notice of the Club’s 55th AGM to be held on 21/02/2015. You also received notice
of the Committee posts for which we have to elect office bearers. Some of the current Committee members have already
served two or more terms and it is understandable that they aren’t available for re-election. Now, this is NOT the time to sit
back and hope that someone else may step forward to lead the Club in the future. It is NOW the time to step forward and make
a difference by serving with either making yourself available or by nominating another member who you believe can make a
difference. Let’s be honest about this, without members there can’t be a committee and without a properly working committee
we will all have to bear the consequences. I don’t think one needs to even consider the consequences since it should be clear
to all. This is the time to think of the future and starting to DO something NOW to secure the Club’s future for the benefit of all..
Taking from JFK’s famous words (modified) - Ask not what the CLUB can do for you; rather ask what YOU can do for your
Club. I believe that it is every ones duty to take the time and consider who you believe has the ability take the baton to continue
the race with an eye on winning it.
If YOU don’t do anything why should the others? We are all responsible for the future of the Club and NOW is the time to take
up your responsibility.

RUST DE WINTER CHRISTMAS WEEKEND
On a beautiful summers afternoon Father Christmas managed to arrive on time. He explained, in a strange accent, that his
sleigh was forced down over KZN and he then had to transfer to a Land Rover to get to Rust de Winter.
Gifts were handed out to the 29 eagerly awaiting children accompanied by parents and grandparents and soon the air was
filled with flying gliders, balls and cars being pushed around. Braai fires were soon blazing and everyone settled down to eating
the excellent braai packs that were handed out and socialising into the night.
On a cool Sunday morning 15 participating kids congregated at the course set up by Brian Cotton and after the briefing they
were off with tense looking parents and grandparents as co drivers.
A special thanks to Carlo and Anneke Winkel for arranging the trophies, Brian and Shelley Cotton for setting up the course and
not least to all who participated in the weekend. Thanks to Colin Ross for being Christmas Father.

TECHNICAL AFTERNOON AT ADVENTURE MOTORS HELD 15 NOVEMBER 2014
The afternoon at Adventure Motors was well attended by 30 members and newcomers who enjoyed an interactive session with
Marc in his workshop. It was only a cloud burst that made us stop just after 5, when we couldn’t hear each other, or else we
could have gone on for much longer.
Marc covered all aspects of trip preparation starting at the suspension, going over to cooling systems, motor, gearboxes and
diffs. He also included advice on what spares to take along and how to do emergency repairs to get you moving again.
Bottom line of the day’s talk – if you think it needs changing, change it before you go. If it needs a service, service it before you
go.
On behalf of the Land Rover Owners Club I would like to thank Marc for opening his workshop to us and sharing his
considerable experience in a most enjoyable way.
LOSKOP AWAY WEEKEND
We were 12 vehicles at Seekoeigat for the weekend and all but one went on the Mountain Drive on Saturday. Friday afternoon
and the evening was spent at leisure and with the rain never far away, we got a chance to catch up on the coming and goings
around Gerrie’s portable fire place until the rain drove us to bed.
Saturday morning, after all the usual formalities of indemnity, etc. we left camp to Kruis River to meet up with some of the
locals for the drive on the farm. It was an easy leisurely drive, with steep ascents and descents every so often. We took a lunch
break in a kraal and spent some time with the locals.
On our way back to camp, we used the opportunity to spend some time on maintaining our geocaches planted in the area
some time ago. Donald Peake’s 3 youngsters caught on quickly and enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
The weather put us very early to bed on Saturday evening with two thunder showers close after one another.
Sunday was a cool day and we spent it at leisure in the camp. By early afternoon most were packed and ready to leave.
We wish to thank Wimpie Miessner and Pieter de la Port who made it possible to drive on the Meissner Family farm.

Join the LROC on a 4x4 outing at the well known Groenkloof Nature Reserve, situated next to The Fountains Valley outside
Pretoria . The 4x4 route is approximately 14km long, and its not difficult except for 2 obstacles that are a bit more challenging.
These 2 obstacles have bypass routes. Good ground clearance and low range will assure no damage to vehicles. Along the
route various species of game can be expected, including zebra, jackal, duiker, kudu, impala, blue wildebeest, blesbuck, red
hartebeest, ostrich, giraffe and sable, and also a rich bird life.

Arrive at 8:30, pay at the entrance gate and park at the entrance to the 4x4 route. Start to deflate tires immediately so we can
set off at 9:00. Members must bring camping chairs and a picnic basket. The 4x4 route won’t take longer than 2 hours, then we
will have picnic afterwards. Members are encouraged to have a 2-way radio in their Landies to get information and ask/give
help as we go.
I will bring my SWR meter along if any member wants to have their radio antennas checked, as well at the club’s diagnostic
tool.
How to get there:Groenkloof Nature Reserve is reached via the entrance to the Fountains Valley Resort. Follow the R21 to
the Fountains Circle, take the Fountains/Centurion turn-off into Christina de Wit Avenue. About 500 m further, turn left at the
entrance to the Fountains Valley Resort. Over weekends and on public holiday’s visitors use the alternative entrance gate 800
m from the Fountains Valley Resort main entrance gate.

The annual LROC breakfast run will take on a slightly different flavour in 2015. We will be joining Rand Hunt, another wellestablished club in South Africa, except they pre date Land Rover and LROC, in fact their members are still on horseback.
Rand Hunt club will be celebrating 129 years in SA.
The Rand Hunt has its origins in the Germiston Hunt Club, which was founded in the summer of 1886, the year of the
discovery of the Rand Gold Fields. Over the following years the club established its heritage and in 1934 the Rand Hunt and
the Johannesburg Polo Clubs joined forces to form the Inanda Club although the Rand Hunt retained its name as a founding
section of the new equestrian club. The hounds were moved to new kennels at Inanda, north of the outlying country area
known as Rosebank. For many years the hunting territory covered what is now Sandown, Wendywood, Buccleuch and
Petervale.
WHAT IS A DRAG HUNT?
The Rand Hunt Club runs a 'drag pack' as the hounds hunt
a pre-laid trail. The trail, or 'line' is laid by a mounted rider
dragging a cloth soaked in a specially concocted scent. No
live hunting takes place, but rather it is a test of the hounds'
tracking abilities. The hunts take place over varied
countryside, including a great number of fences of many
different designs. A hunt consists of a series of 'lines' that
have been laid about 6 minutes ahead of the pack.
Generally four to five lines are laid, each being from 1.5 to 3
kilometres long and finishing close to water so that the
hounds can refresh themselves before going on to the next
line.
Rand Hunt has extended an invitation to Land Rover
Owners Club to join them at their Breakfast Meet near
Inanda Country Base on the 11th January 2015. Land
Rover vehicles will be allowed to “follow” the trials (lines). The routes will require off-road driving, but nothing too difficult. After
the hunt, we will join the riders and members of Rand Hunt for a breakfast on the grounds of Inanda Country Base.
Any members wishing to join in our first breakfast run event of 2015 are to please book with Isla.There will be a fee per vehicle
and for the breakfast, which will be confirmed on booking.
Children are welcome, however parents kindly asked to keep a close eye on their kids when around the horses and the
working dogs.

For this weekend we will be based at Malonjeni Guest Farm, a great relaxing venue. Driver Training will take place at

Malonjeni on Saturday 25 January. This will be the Basic Driver Training Module. For those attending Driver Training please
follow the instructions as per for camping below. It is essential that you book with Isla for the driver training so we know how
many people to expect. Training will commence at 9:30 and should be completed by 14:30. Thereafter all club members are

The Summer Trial on Sunday January 26 will take place at Malonjeni is R30.00 per entrant. “Camping cost: R65.00 per person
per night. Day visitor cost: R50 (adults), R25 (kids under 12).”
Camping from Friday night is available. The club is responsible for collecting your fees and not Malonjeni. All members must
please complete the slip at the gate on arrival and report to main reception for registration; from there you will be directed to

This is our flagship trial with a history of many many hours of fun in the mud. Even if you are not keen on trialing come and

We have booked the entire campsite at Riverbend, 10 kms from Groot Marico. This event is restricted to 10 vehicles as that is
all the campsite holds. There is no electricity but there are 3 toilets, a donkey boiler for the 2 showers and washing up. The
water is pumped from the river which runs along one side of the campsite. There is also a tin decked Lapa and large tractor
hubs for cooking and campfire. Please bring along at least two packs of firewood. The nearest shop is somewhere!!! Think
about 10 km away.
Camping fees are R200.00 per vehicle.(Dogs free but with prior arrangement with the organisers).
Booking with Isla is a must and payment of entrance and camping fees up front.
Email address is essential as all route directions and questions will be emailed to every entrant a couple of days prior to the
event. There are many trails on the farm, not too difficult but challenging. There is no extra charge for the trails as they are
included in the camping fees.
You start in your own time on Saturday morning (Suggest not later than 9.00am) from the Sasol Garage at the corner of
Hendrik Potgieter and the N14. The route schedule starts at the STOP in the garage. There will be questions along the way so
expect it to take between 3½ to 4½ hours to get to Riverbend.

Please note that the 55th AGM will take place on the 21 February 2015. We are again
using Rietvlei Nature Reserve just South of Pretoria. As this venue continues to be a hit,
we have booked the lapa again. The facilities are great and there is enough parking
available, and plenty of braai places. As is the established custom, the Club will be
providing braai packs for all members attending. Regalia will also be on sale. Be sure to
tell the person on duty at the gate that you will be attending the LROC AGM, and sign the
attendance register at the gate, otherwise you will be charged entry fee. For those
interested in a position on the committee please check nomination form at the end of this
newsletter.

LROC’S 55TH CELEBRATIONS 2015
Since March 2014, we have been engaged in negotiations with Sandstone Estates especially for the event planned for the
nd
weekend of 3 – 6 April 2015. A representative of Sandstone Estates met with us twice and we paid the farm a visit the 2
weekend of November 2014. The long and short of it all is, that subsequent to our booking the venue for the mentioned
weekend, we were informed by them that, that weekend coincides with their annual international Stars of Sandstone event. It
means a completely different venue than the one we have envisaged, with a minimum fee of R1 775.00 per couple for camping
for the weekend without the exclusive use of the venue. That all brought about the consideration of an alternative venue and
after we have met with the owner of Korannaberg Getaway, it was decided to rather change the venue. They offer a bush
camp more in line with what we usually do with two trails right there on the farm without breaking the bank. It is centrally
located for those coming from afar and near enough to the Lesotho border to do a day trip across the border.
Although Sandstone Estates is, admittedly, a great venue, we don’t think it’s worth the fees they charge and those who really
want to have a look can still do so but at a hefty daily visitor’s fee. The change of venue will unfortunately mean that the
Didibeng 4x4 Trail will be too far from Korannaberg and therefore will not be used.
We did receive positive replies from the other clubs and chapters we have invited with some confirmed already.
All the details will be published in our next Newsletter, so that you can book your place.

We once again have the privilege of visiting this wonderful park. The Tembe Elephant Park is a reserve normally restricted to
those staying in its private lodge. The KZN Wildlife Honorary Officers run six fundraising weekends at Tembe Elephant Park to
raise funds for projects within the park. In the unique sand forest and grassland ecosystem of the Tembe National Elephant
Park roam over 220 of the largest elephant in the world, the last remaining indigenous herd in KwaZulu-Natal.
This pristine wilderness, a proclaimed reserve on the old Ivory Route between Mozambique and the Zulu territory, also boasts
the other members of the Big Five – lion, leopard, black and white rhino and buffalo – as well as over 340 bird species and
abundant other mammal species right down to the tiny Suni, one of the smallest antelope in the world. Tembe offers an
authentic Big Five experience in a national game park managed by the Tembe tribe, headed by Nkosi (Chief) Tembe.
You will be camping at Ponweni camp, about 20km’s into the park. The camp has open air showers, basins and toilets with a
view. You will have access to self drives through the entire park and a variety of other activities. One of these is individual night
drives in your own vehicle. This can, as is the case with all night drives, provide one with exceptional sights which would
otherwise not be possible.
Due to the sandy environment, no caravans are allowed into the reserve; only off road trailers are permitted.
There is a strong possibility that a work party will also be required for the Ndumo Reserve that will take place at the same time
as the Tembe work party. Further details of this event will be passed on once the rangers have finalised their program for next
year. Accommodation will in all probability be in the camping site at Ndumo.
Please also note that bookings need to be finalised with Tembe six weeks prior to the date of the event.
As minimum and maximum numbers apply for both the work party and the fund raiser, bookings are essential.

OBITUARY
John Brand from our Border Chapter passed away at a cycling race at Thomas River on Saturday 01/11/2014.Our deepest
sympathy to his family and friends at this tragic time.
SUBJECT: INFO NEEDED FOR A BOOK ABOUT A LAND ROVER FROM THE UK IN SA.
Hi, I am a well known British artist in the UK who grew up in South Africa
(and also a 2008 Defender owner, currently living in London) My Grandfather
drove a brand new 1959 Series II Land Rover and caravan in late 1959 from
Folkestone in Kent down through Africa to Bulawayo which took over three
months, my father was 10 at the time and is starting to write a book about the
journey. The trip was filmed and also documented with a daily diary and I am
compiling the info on behalf of my father to be made into a film/documentary
as well which is being put forward to the BBC with the original 1959 film
footage.
The reason for my contact is that I am trying to trace the actual original Land
Rover vehicle itself. My Grandfather died many years ago and with him so
did the history of the Land Rover.
It was a new series II and although Rover did not help financially with the
expedition, they did supply the Land Rover three months earlier than anyone
else and fitted some unique accessories for the journey. The
registration/licence plate number was "460 GKT" and the owner at the time
(1959-1970?) was John Leslie Adams. I have attached some photographs of
it from the trip.I know I do have the original documents from Land Rover themselves with the original bill of sale somewhere if it
helps (which may include a chassis number).
Any help would be greatly appreciated to point me in the right direction for trying to trace this vehicle in Southern Africa. My
Grandfather owned a butcher shop in Bulawayo in the early 60's before moving to Fish Hoek in Cape Town and opening
another Butcher Shop. His name was John Leslie Adams. I believe he may at some point in the early sixties been involved in
an accident with a land rover in South Africa or Zimbabwe, I do not know if it was this Land Rover in particular.
I am keen to trace the vehicle and if there is a remote chance it could be found would be looking to have a ground up
restoration done in South Africa which would be filmed and used in the television documentary.
Any kind help would be greatly appreciated, or what I would need to provide to find out more.
