PURVEYORS OF THE EQUESTRIAN LIFESTYLE www.tackntogs.co.za Shine Cross Country, Royal Blue & Red Cromo Air Control S FROM THE EDITOR As I am writing this month’s column, the spectacular South African Derby has just drawn to a close and the SANESA Nationals are well underway. At least that was the case until a fierce fire tore through the Rayton area. Luckily the fire only circled the venue where the Nationals were taking place. The racket was enough to bring all the proceedings to a halt, though. The smells and sounds of the tarnished earth started having an effect on the horses… The reason that I mention this is because this story is such a great demonstration of the compassion that lays at the heart of our SA equine community. With the blistering heat surrounding Misty Meadows (the venue where the Nationals were being held), and both humans and horses not knowing whether it will continue to spread, the parents who were attending the event did something truly special. After securing the children participating in the Nationals, the parents (who were joined by some riders and grooms) turned their attention to the distressed horses. While it was not their responsibility to look after these horses, the parents pacified the horses and ensured that everyone (both two- or four-legged) were safe. Recently, during a meeting with potential advertisers, someone joked that “horse people” are all only 70 percent normal, with the other 30 percent accounting for the “little bit strange” part of equine-lovers. And maybe that’s right. Maybe it is exactly this 30 percent of “strangeness” that the above story from the SANESA Nationals demonstrates. If you ask me, it’s a special kind of “strange” to have so much compassion, care and empathy for another – especially in a world where we hardly exhibit such love to our own kind, let alone animals. Once the fire was out and everyone was safe, the SANESA team saluted the parents whose swift action helped contain the crisis situation. I, too, salute these parents, for reminding us that life is about more than just self-interest and that, where our equestrian community is concerned, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Here you can expect to find a bunch of useful hints, the occasional joke, book and blog reviews and much more. As the temperatures of the glorious South African summer starts to rise, we are outdoors and on outrides more often basking in the sun and enjoying fun times with our horses. But we aren’t the only ones that come out to play during the warmer months… The number of stingers, like bees, swarming around increases dramatically as well. Luckily, being stung by a single or a couple of bees will generally cause temporary pain and discomfort, but it shouldn’t cause yourself of your horse severe harm (even though it doesn’t feel that way when you have just been stung). That said, if you or your horse experience severe lesions or symptoms of an allergic reaction (like excessive swelling, irritability or pain), it is imperative that you contact a medical practitioner immediately. While it might prove tricky to avoid bees altogether, here are a couple of tips that will help ease the pain if you do get on the bad side of a bee: • • • • • Of all the summer stingers, only bees have barbs on their stingers that break off and are left behind when it stings something. The faster you can get that barb out, the faster you will heal. Remember not do squeeze the venom sac while you gently remove the stinger. Once you have extracted the stinger, place an ice pack over the affected area for ten to 15 minutes. Make a paste from baking soda and water and gently place this on the affected area to draw out any inflammation and further soothe the pain. Try to restrict access to the part of the skin where the bee has stung by covering it with a bandage or plaster. This will boost healing and minimise the chance of getting infected. Lastly, if it is your horse that has been stung, remember to give him some extra tender love and care until he has fully recovered. www.horsetrading.co.za 5 A word on Equine Dental Care by Steve Clark HORSE TRADING is running a new bi-monthly equine dental care feature with the insights of equine dental health expert, Steve Clark. The ‘Downside’ of Hay Nets So many of my clients are unaware of the discomfort that hay nets cause their horses on a daily basis. We use and have been using hay nets for practically generations. I say ‘practically’, because that is exactly what it is in essence: a practical tool to feed our horses. The hay net prevents wastage and provides good space utilisation in your stable. It is also an easy measure for how much hay your horse goes through in a specific time period. Unfortunately, as humans, we are real “direct line thinkers” to whom it makes perfect sense to continue to employ hay nets, the popular choice for feeding horses when we grew up. The problem comes in with the fact that we are not aware of the health and safety implications that using such nets for feeding may have on our equine friends. Obviously, there are foreseen risks, like the horse getting caught in the net. This is easily circumnavigated by simply raising the height of the net itself, so that none of the horse’s body parts can get stuck in it. This is a great solution to a foreseen risk, but there are also unforeseen risks that we are not always aware of and therefore we don’t take the necessary preventative actions to mitigate such risks and ensure our horse’s overall health. To ensure that we have healthy horses, one of the major factors that we need to keep in mind is the optimal health of their teeth. The impact that hay nets have on a horse’s teeth will be covered in more detail further in this article. First, it is wise to note how horses live in their natural habitat and how incorrect feeding habits have an impact on a horse’s general overall health. In their natural environments, horses will graze for between 14-16 hours a day completing an average of between 30 000 - 50 000 chewing cycles. Due to the fact that 8 most modern horses are stable bound for as long as 20 hours per day, it is vital that constant gut movement is ensured by providing them with a sufficient amount of hay so that they can ‘graze’ not ‘browse’. Another interesting fact about horses grazing in their natural environment is that when horses lower their heads toward ground level, their lower jaw shifts forward and enables the incisors to meet. Equestrian dentists refer to this as A-P movement, or anterior to posterior movement. This relates to why using hay nets to feed your horse is not a good idea. It is important to understand how grazing through a hay net is not only uncomfortable and unnatural for your horse, but is also detrimental to the wear of your horse’s teeth. This is to say, when your horse is at ground level, the incisors are level as well and the molars are aligned in the right position so that they wear evenly while chewing. When, however, your horse is forced to ‘browse’ with an elevated head position, it causes the lower molars to recede back and results in the lower incisors creating large hooks on the upper first pre-molars. This is because in an elevated position, the upper pre-molars are not being opposed by the lower pre-molars like they would be in a natural grazing position. Once hooks start to form, this will be exaggerated by the tooth eruption and will affect your horses riding ability. When, for example, asking your horse for vertical flexion, or to stop or collect, the lower jaw needs to come forward with the A-P movement. This is not possible if the A-P movement is restricted by hooks on the upper first pre-molars. This will cause your horse to stretch his www.horsetrading.co.za F E AT U R E head out, head shake, twist his back, open his mouth or resist in any way possible as he simply cannot physically do what you are asking. a stable corner may be an option. Another option is purposely built mangers that sit as close to the ground as possible. Obviously, there are many other teeth related issues that can cause similar symptoms, but the issue of hay nets is sufficient to warrant individual attention as it is still such a common method of feeding hay. So many horse owners are unaware of the dental problems associated with the use of hay nets. For transit purposes the hay net is a necessary evil as it helps distract the horse while travelling - especially for long journeys. While there may be times, such as the above, when we have to make exceptions for short periods, it is greatly helpful to start seeing such times as the exception rather than the rule for feeding. The aim of this article is not to cause those who are currently relying on hay nets anxiety, but rather to create awareness and offer insight that may help improve your horse’s overall and dental health. Investigating alternative methods of feeding will most certainly help our four legged equine friends have a more comfortable stable experience and in turn, have healthier, more natural teeth. Alternative methods to feeding hay are something to consider. Ideas such as an inside-out tyre placed in 9 Keen to find out more or need help with your horse’s teeth? Every month we shall feature a different breed, exploring its history and tracing its temperament. That way, you will get a refresher course on the difference between an Ass and an Arabian… Shire History Ever heard of the British ‘Great Horse’ or the heroic ‘War Horse’ of yesteryear? That is the Shire’s greatgreat-grandfather. They carried heavily armoured men through the First and Second World Wars. When they were not the mount of choice, because machines started to be used, they were used to pull heavy artillery. Their sheer strength meant that they were renowned throughout Britain for their superb work ethic. So much so, that they were relied upon during the industrial revolution. They became known as Barge Horses, which referred to the fact that they were often used to pull barges through the canal. After the Second World War the situation became grave for these British War Horses and the number of breeders dwindled. They nearly became extinct. It is believed that during this time, the War Horse bloodline was crossed with the Friesian bloodline which produced the magnificent Shire that we are familiar with today. We are indebted to a few passionate breeders and breweries who needed Shires to pull heavy wagons loaded with beer. These folks revived the Shire breed. 18 Physical Attributes Shires are easily identified by their height, colours and feathers… As particularly tall horses, they stand gloriously at 17.1 to 17.2 hands high, with some being as tall as 18 to 19 hands. You’ll see them in beautiful bays, blacks, browns, greys and the occasional sorrels. Their feathers, or the silky thick wavy hair at the bottom of their legs as well as their hocks that normally run all the way down their hooves are some of the Shires’ most famous attributes. Temperament & Uses In the 1920s, a pair of Shires were used to pull as much as forty five tons. Today, however, its tractable nature and trainability has resulted in it being a popular choice for dressage, jumping and trail riding. www.horsetrading.co.za Would you like your horse’s hoof care to be more natural?
