THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
We celebrate today the Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome because it is the
head and mother church of all churches in the world. On the façade of the basilica there is an inscription in Latin which reads, “the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world.”
One might think St. Peter’s Basilica is the head of all the churches but in fact it is the Basilica of St.
John Lateran. Every bishop has a cathedral and the Pope’s cathedral is the Basilica of St. John
Lateran.
The Basilica is visited by huge numbers of pilgrims every year symbolizing the love of so many
people for the Church. Celebrating the dedication of the Pope’s cathedral today shows our unity
with the Pope and our love and respect for him. Not only that, but it shows that we are united with
each other in the Church.

Dear Parishioners,
As I write today, people are going to the polls to elect various officials throughout the country. I have no idea what
the results will be by the time you read this message in the Sunday bulletin. However, I have a few comments and
observations that I wish to make regarding the current state of politics in America.
First, I wish to state clearly that I have never been affiliated with any one political party for as long as I have been
eligible to vote. While I know that this may prohibit me from voting in certain primary elections, I have found no
compelling reason to make an allegiance to any political party as they currently stand. My allegiance is to Almighty
God and to my Catholic faith. I publicly endorse no candidate. However, I do vote regularly and I vote based on the
issues, on a candidate’s observable moral character and values, on what a candidate or his/her party’s platform actually stands for, on a candidate’s record of service and past voting on issues, etc. This sometimes makes voting very
difficult, considering most candidates without a major party affiliation probably do not have the money or political
clout necessary to run a campaign that is actually able to win. Is choosing the lesser of two evils—a position in which
we may find ourselves all too often—ever the optimal moral position to be in?
This being said, I raise the following concerns:
Enough with the negative campaigning and political mudslinging! If you are going to run a political ad, tell
me what you are going to do, not how bad your opponent is! I suppose that negative campaigns must produce a greater result, or they would not be used by so many. But I am truly sick of them! My hope is that
there will be a backlash against those proponents of the negative campaigns and that your efforts will backfire.
Stop lying to the people! Personally, I do not to continually be told what you are going to do simply to pacify
me or to get my vote. If I do not see results or I see broken promises time and again, you simply will not get
my vote again. Period. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me!
If you are elected to public office, do your jobs! We have a political system that was intended to have a check
and balance system. Deliver me from a plethora of executive orders, from activist judges, from a congress
that does not do what it is actually elected to do—continually stuck in political gridlock from partisan loyalties rather than the good of the constituents. Deliver me from all abuses of political power, in whatever form
they may appear!
If you do not vote or fail to become informed on the issues, you have no one to blame but yourself! I hope
and pray that when they interview people on various TV shows, the people are not as ignorant about social
and political matters as they make them out to be. If they really are, God help our country!
Dear news media: please report the news and not continually slant it to meet your own political objectives!
Is there such a thing as objective journalism anymore? Does everything have to be seen through a political
pundit’s eyes?
I think that I represent the average American citizen. I did not come from wealth or privilege. Because of my parents, I was provided an excellent education and raised with a decent work ethic. My parents struggled to raise five
children, to put food on the table and to make ends meet each week. They taught us the value of the dollar and advised us to live within our means.
Like many Americans, I think that I have become highly disillusioned with our current state of politics and don’t
know exactly how we are ever going to get out of the mess that we are currently in. May God help us! The genuine
hope that I hold comes from remembering that no matter who is elected to public office, Jesus is still King!

DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME
First Reading: Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12
This reading from the Prophet Ezekiel tells of the streaming, healing waters that flow from the temple. These waters
restore life to the river’s inhabitants as well as the fruit bearing trees along its banks. It is believed that the water signifies blessings, whereas the lack of signifies trouble, hardship.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17
Paul compares us to a building whose foundation has been laid by Jesus. As the people of God, we can only be solid if we are grounded in Christ.
Gospel: John 2:13-22
Near the time of Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem and saw the temple had become
a marketplace. He became angry and proceeded to drive out the vendors and livestock.
Jesus spoke of destroying the temple and rebuilding it in three days. The Jews did not
know Jesus was speaking of his body, but when his resurrection from the dead came to
pass, his disciples remembered what Jesus had said and came to believe the Scripture
and the word Jesus had spoken.
Parish volunteers will be collecting food donations on November 15-16
and 22-23 after all Masses. Please help the food pantry continue to
provide the needy Thanksgiving baskets and necessities throughout
the year. All non-perishable foods will be put to good use, but the following is a suggested list for your charitable gifts:

A “CELTIC TWILIGHT CHRISTMAS” featuring Irish music performers Phil Coulter, Andy Cooney,
Geraldine Brannigan and the Irish Pops Orchestra will be presented on Saturday, 12/6 at the TD
Bank Arts Center in Sewell at 7:30 pm. The concert will benefit the South Jersey Scholarship Fund,
which raises funds for tuition assistance for students attending the 28 elementary schools and six
high schools in the Diocese of Camden.

Phil Coulter, from Derry, Northern Ireland, is known as “Ireland’s Musical Ambassador” and composed a string
of pop hits with Bill Martin, including “Puppet on a String” and the Bay City Rollers’ “Saturday Night.” He has
composed music for Elvis Presley, among others, and was the musical mastermind and songwriter behind the
Celtic Thunder act, which won acclaim for its PBS specials. In 2012 he performed at New York’s Irish Repertory
Theatre in a one-man musical show.
Andy Cooney is part of the acclaimed New York Tenors. He has recorded 19 albums, performed in New York’s
Carnegie Hall, among other places, and was described as “Irish America’s Favorite Son” by the New York
Times.
Geraldine Brannigan has recorded hit albums in Ireland, sang on the number one selling album in South Africa
and represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest. She has performed at The National Concert Hall
in Dublin and the Cork Opera House.

Anointing of the Sick
The Rectory may be called at any time for the Sacrament of the Sick. Arrangements should be made
through the parish office for home visits with the
Eucharist for the sick and elderly.
R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
The RCIA process is an opportunity for instruction
and spiritual formation for any adult seeking a deeper understanding of the Catholic tradition or full incorporation into the Catholic Church. If you are
interested in becoming a Catholic, or completing the
Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation) please call the parish office at 927-3568,

There is a real need for priest and religious vocations. Please talk to your children, encourage them,

LFF is a process for all ages and generations. We believe that lifelong and continuous formation, learning
