LEST WE FORGET
JODIE ENNS HIEBERT

By Paul Straat
This coming Tuesday, November
11th, is Remembrance Day. This will be
the 96th time since the end of World
War I when all of the members of the
Armed Forces who died in the line of
duty, throughout all of the British
Commonwealth countries, are memorialized and remembered. It is also
known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day.
The hostilities of the First World War
officially ceased on the 11th hour of
the 11th day of the 11th month of
1918. This was in accordance with the
armistice that was signed by the representatives of Germany and the
Entente, between 5:12 and 5:20 a.m.
that morning. The document’s term
eleventh hour refers to the passing of
the 11th hour or 11 a.m.
2014 also happens to mark the
70th anniversary of the Juno Beach D
Day landings of the Second World War.
Our country’s contribution to the liberation of Europe in that conflict started
back in 1943 with the planning for D
Day at the 1943 Quebec Conference.
What came after still stands as an
example to the world of what can happen when stratagem combines with
our particularly Canadian brand of valour.
Just before sunrise on June 6th in
1944, 230 heavy bombers from the
Royal Canadian Air Force began
attacking German positions on the
shores of France with almost 500 tons
of bombs. As they did so, 450 Canadians were parachuting inland to
engage the enemy. Right behind
them, the RCAF fighter squadrons
were there to provide top cover for the
invasion beaches. Poised at sea was a
mixed flotilla of 109 Canadian destroyers, frigates, and corvettes providing
naval gunfire support, as well as antisubmarine escort. Included in this fleet
were the landing craft that would

Wear a poppy as a reminder that we must never forget
bring almost 14,000 Canadian soldiers
to Juno Beach alone.
These men represented our entire
country and all of our people. They
came from everywhere. From the
Northern Nova Scotia Highlanders, to
The Royal Winnipeg Rifles, all the way
across to the Canadian Scottish from
Victoria, and that’s just to name a few.
Young men, many of them teenagers,
the best we had, and with everything
to look forward to. They went away to
a foreign land and laid it all down so
that we and our way of life back here
would be safe to continue.
The boys hit the sand really hard.
The cost in human terms was almost
unimaginable. Canada would suffer
more than any other division in the
entire British Army Group. During the
Battle of Normandy, in the first 24
hours alone, there were more than
1,000 Canadian casualties, 359 of
which were instantly fatal. That’s one
man down in less than two minutes,
going on for a whole day. But it wasn’t
all bad news. By D Day, our boys were
the only ones to accomplish all of their
initial objectives, as well as making it
further inland than absolutely any
other Allied fighting force. It is not surprising, therefore, that historically, D
Day is still one of the most defining
moments in Canadian military history.
Beyond the blood soaked beaches of
Normandy over 7000 more Canadians
would eventually die in the push
through France and Belgium, and then
eventually into the very heart of Germany itself.
It is because of these brave men
and women and the supreme sacrifice
that they made, and the life that we
enjoy today, that we wear poppies in
November. Having said that, there are
still too many negative reminders. History is proving that human conflict is
far from over. The war to end all wars is
just one on a long list of deadly conflicts, some raging on today. And not
all of it is out of sight on foreign soil.

LEST WE FORGET
Continued from f ront page
Recent tragic events at the
Ottawa War Memorial are
poignant reminders that the
men in the Armed Forces can be
called upon anywhere to make
that sacrifice. The two soldiers
that perished recently did so
because of what they do. They
were there, like those before
them, standing in for all of us
when and where they were
needed.
For those wishing to participate in Lethbridge’s Remembrance Day Services this year, the
events will begin with a parade
at the Lethbridge Exhibition
Pavilion at 9:00 a.m., November
the 11th. Parade Marshall is Don
Downard and Honorary Parade
Marshall is Glenn Habkirk. Fall In
will begin at 9:30 a.m. Because
parade personnel will be using
the east doors of the Exhibition
Pavilion it is requested that the
public uses the south doors, or
the main entrance to the Pavil-
ion, by 9:45 a.m.
Master of Ceremonies will be
Jeff Alden.There will be speakers,
solo anthems, and a choir presentation by St. Augustine's. The
Act of Remembrance will be conducted by Kent Perry, President
of the Royal Canadian Legion
Branch #4. This year’s firing party
is the RCA 20th Independent
Field Battery, and they ask that
the public be aware beforehand
of very loud noises during the
cannon and gun fire. Finally,
there will be laying of wreaths for
bereaved mothers, various other
organizations, as well as for all
Veterans, ending with a rendition
of God Save the Queen and
March Off of the Colours. Ceremonies at the Cenotaph are
scheduled immediately afterwards downtown in front of the
Yates for twelve noon, where
vigil is being held by the Cadet
Corps.
Every year is always the
same for all the veterans that
have served and seen conflict.

For the purpose of preserving the sanctity
of the Lord’s Day
A sabbath well spent,
Brings a week of content,
And strength for the toils of the morrow.
But a sabbath profaned,
What ever be gained,
Is a certain forerunner of sorrow.

Your social media
identity - all the photos,
videos and words about
you that have been posted
to social media websites tells people a lot about
you. What your social
media identity says about
you can have a big impact
on your career and professional reputation, now and
in the future.
Even if you’re not
using
social
media,
chances are you still have a
social media identity. Your
friends, family and coworkers have probably
included your name or
image in their posts. This
information may turn up in
an Internet search of your
name where everyone,
including your current and
potential employers, can
see it.
By maintaining an
effective social media identity, you will ensure that
you make a positive
impression on employers
and other work-related
contacts when they look
you up online.
Using social media
Some of the most popular social media tools
include
• Social networking
websites such as Facebook
and MySpace
• Professional networking websites such as
LinkedIn and Viadeo
• Blogs, and mini-blogs
such as Twitter
• Video sharing websites such as YouTube
• Forums and bulletin
boards such as those hosted by professional associations, alumni associations,
unions and other organizations.
Using social media
tools wisely allows you to
manage and control the
information that others
can access about you
online. Social media tools
can also increase your professional visibility.

media identity

social media identity.
Assume that the whole
world can and will read
what you post online and
what others post about
you. The following suggestions can help you manage
your online identity to your
best advantage:
• Be discreet with the
words and images you
share online about yourself
and others.
• Choose your social
media friends with care. If
you wouldn’t have coffee
with them, don’t include
them in your network.What
the people in your social
media network share about
you could potentially damage your reputation.
• Take control of your
social media identity. How
you use a website’s privacy
settings can affect how
much others can learn
about you. Find out about
the privacy settings on
each social networking
website you subscribe to,
and use them to control
who can access your profile
and which parts of your
profile they can access.
• Develop boundaries
between your work and
your personal life by creating one profile on Facebook for family and friends
and another on LinkedIn or
other social media sites for
your professional network.

• Follow the same etiquette for social media
networking that you
would in networking face
to face.
• Maintain your social
media identity by regularly
setting aside time to
• update your profile
• ensure your profile is
consistent with your
resumé
• ensure that all of the
social media sites you use
have consistent information
Google yourself regularly, using your name and
nicknames. If you’re unhappy with what turns up, try
these suggestions:
• Ask friends or family
who post inappropriate
photos or information
about you to change their
privacy settings or remove
your image, name and any
remarks about you in their
posted comments and
conversations.
• Untag yourself in
inappropriate photos on
others’ profiles.
• Be more active in
social media to create positive information about
yourself. It will counteract
what you don’t want people to see. Follow the suggestions in the next section to boost the positive
features of your identity.
• Taking part in events
may result in your being
associated with that organization when you are
googled. Choose carefully
the activities and organizations that you get involved
with.
• As a last resort, contact an online identity
management company to
help you handle your
online identity. Use a
search engine like Bing,
Google or Yahoo to find
one.
Projecting a positive
social media identity
When you increase
your positive presence in
social media, you ensure
negative or unprofessional
information about you
gets a lower ranking in
search engine results. Try
these suggestions:
• Link from your social
media profile to the web
pages of groups, teams or
projects you’re involved in.
• Use websites like
YouTube and My Space to
promote projects related
to your work or volunteer
activities. If it’s appropriate,
make sure your name is
included in the information.
Make search engine
optimization (SEO) work
for you. SEO is the process
that selects how items are
ranked in search results
and it responds well to
blogs and mini-blogs. Your
own blog and your
responses to other blogs
will likely be highly ranked
in search results.
Follow and comment
on professional and volunteer related blogs. Use
these tips:
• Check out a blog for
several days to develop a
feel for content and tone
before posting your own
comments. When you do
respond, your comment
will be more effective.
• Steer clear of blogs
and forums about controversial topics, such as politics and religion. If you
can’t resist, use an alias.
• Use Real Simple Syndication (RSS) to deliver
blogs and other webbased content directly to
your computer.
It’s important to
understand how your
social media identity can
affect your reputation. By
effectively managing your
online presence, you can
ensure your social media
activities have a positive
impact on your career.

Improving Your Immune System
Meet
Priscilla Peltier
Certified Herbalist,
Nutrition Consultant
and Registered BIE
Practitioner
Today, I’d like to share with you some simple
ways to improve immune system.
Diet:
Sugar decreases the function of your immune
system almost immediately. Ever notice how
children often come down with a cold or flu after
consuming large amounts of sweets? Sugar and
refined carbohydrates (white bread, white rice &
white flour) feed bad microbes like fungus, viruses
and bacteria in our bodies. So it is important if your
child tends to suffer from a weak immune system,
where they get more than 2 colds a year, ear
infections, flu or asthma, to limit the amount of
sweets they eat.
Foods that are particularly good for your
immune system include garlic and old-fashioned
soup. And make it mushroom time: Japanese
mushrooms are a great immune booster and are
full of antioxidants.
And did you know that Vitamin C enhances our
immune system? Vitamin C was championed by Dr.
Linus Pauling as an antiviral and anticancer nutrient
as an immune booster par excellence. White blood
cells use vitamin C to combat infections, and in the
face of inflammation or microbial challenge, levels
of vitamin C are depleted.
Rest:
If you’re short on sleep,it will be harder for your
body to fight off disease.
Exercise:
If you exercise regularly, there’s a good chance
that you’re helping to boost your immune system.
Recent studies have suggested that if you complete
moderate exercise just a few times every week, you
can drastically reduce the number of colds that you
get every year.
Cough Syrup:
And for those who are experiencing a constant
dry and nagging cough, natural cough remedies
are often preferred because over-the-counter
antihistamine-decongestant combinations can
cause side effects in many people. Look for those
that are sugar-free.
A healthy immune system is the best defense
we have against microbes, bacteria, and viruses that
would otherwise invade the body and destroy our
health. I recommend you adopt healthy-living
strategies by eating healthy, exercising regularly
and taking steps to avoid infections, such as
washing your hands frequently.

New Chapter Tumeric Force
Wholemega® Whole Fish Oil from New Chapter® is naturally pure,
100% wild-caught Salmon sourced from pristine Alaskan waters among the world’s purest. Like extra-virgin olive oil, the freshcaught Salmon is pressed immediately after harvest. Our gentle,
food grade process is all that’s needed to deliver Wild Alaskan
Salmon’s

Omega fatty acids.
Calcium from Plants, Not Animals
The truth is, the calcium in most supplements comes from
limestone – rocks. Bone Strength Take Care is dramatically
different. It’s plant-based calcium, sourced from the pristine coast
of Iceland.
Because calcium alone isn’t enough,
Bone Strength Take Care also provides
key nutrients like Vitamin D3, which
helps in the absorption of calcium, and
Vitamin K, which helps in the
maintenance of bones.
Calcium intake, when combined with
sufficient Vitamin D, a healthy diet, and
regular exercise, may reduce the risk of
developing osteoporosis.
Joint Pain - A Common Issue. Anti-inflammatory to help relieve joint pain
Known as the “King of Herbs” in Ayurvedic medicine, Turmeric has been used and revered in
traditional herbal systems for thousands of years. At New Chapter®, we truly believe that
Turmeric is one of the world’s most important herbs.
Have you ever experienced joint pain? Many people have inflammation in their joints, such as
their elbows or knees. Joint inflammation is actually part of the natural healing process of the
body, but it does tend to manifest as pain and discomfort.
What’s more, if joint inflammation lasts for several weeks or
longer, daily activities and overall mobility may become limited.
The Force of Medicinal Turmeric
Fortunately, the Wisdom of Nature provides effective botanicals
that can help provide joint comfort. Turmeric, in particular, is
used as an anti-inflammatory to help relieve joint pain.Turmeric
Force from New Chapter delivers two types of Turmeric extract
to provide you with the rhizome’s valuable phytonutrients.
Turmeric Force is also used as a liver protectant.

History... Operation Overlord
T
he final plans for Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of France, and its assault phase,
Operation Neptune were made in early 1944. The invasion plan called for an amphibious assault
by five infantry divisions on a fifty mile stretch of the Cotentin Caen area of the Normandy coast.
The five infantry divisions, two British, one Canadian and two American were assigned to beaches codenamed, from east to west, Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah. Three airborne divisions would land
ahead of the main invasion to delay enemy movements and facilitate expansion of the bridgehead. Two
American airborne divisions would land behind the western assault and the British airborne on the
eastern end. Operation Overlord represented a previously unknown level of cooperation between allied
nations, all struggling for the common goal of defeating Nazi Germany. The plan called for the 3rd
Canadian Infantry Division to establish a beachhead, capture the three small seaside towns, and
advance ten miles inland. Their objective was to cut the Caen-Bayeux highway, seize the Carpiquet
airport west of Caen. The challenge facing the Canadians was to overcome the coastal defences and
capture ground positions that could be defended against German counter attacks. The assault was a
formidable task for the Canadians as the Germans had turned the coastline into a continuous fortress
of guns, pillboxes, wire, mines and beach obstacles. Over one million Canadians served in the forces
during World War II including 50,000 women. The army was the largest service with 700,000 enlistments.
The Royal Canadian Air Force had 222,501 enlistments and the Royal Canadian Navy 99,407.
By June 1944, 30,000 of these Canadians were poised in Britain for Operation Overlord.
We salute those who have
served and sacrificed for
our freedom.

LCTs with Shermans
Southhampton's port, like many in southern England, was crammed to
over-flowing by hundreds of landing craft. This photo shows LCTs
(Landing Craft, Tank) with Shermans onboard. LCTs were built in a variety
of sizes, the largest being 203 feet. An LCT could transport up to four
Sherman tanks. Many LCTs were modified for close in fire support. Over 900
LCTs, in their various forms, participated on D-Day. (NAC, PA 132653)

In Flanders Fields
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae MD (1872 - 1918) Canadian Army
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

Canadian troops were equipped with many different types of weapons for
the inland assault.
Cameron Higlanders firing Vickers Machine-Gun
Classed as a medium weapon, the Vickers gun could be fired at high or low
angles from a tripod. The Vickers was fed by 250 round cloth belts of .303
ammunition and fired in full automatic bursts of 10 to 20 rounds. It could
fire 60 shots per minute (slow fire) and 250 (rapid fire).
It was accurate up to 1100 yards.
Winnipeg Rifles Advance Inland.
Winnipeg Rifles advance inland. The soldier on the left is armed with a Lee
Enfield bolt-action rifle. The Canadian infantry used the Lee Enfield rifle as
their standard weapon throughout World War II. The soldier on the right
has a Bren gun. The Bren Gun was a .303 calibre light machine gun and
formed the basis of firepower of the infantry company. The Bren was
employed one per infantry section of ten men. (NAC, PA 116528)
Thousands of Canadian sailors were aboard the landing craft, destroyers, corvettes,
frigates, torpedo boats, and minesweepers that would go first.
LCA Royal Canadian Navy and Infantry

infantrymen used at short range against tanks. It was not a rocket launcher
and gave the operator a powerful kick when fired. (NAC, PA 177100)

the landing in his book Battle Diary: "The moment the ramp came down, heavy
machine-gun fire broke out from somewhere back of the seawall. Mortars were
dropping all over the beach. The men rose, starboard line turning right, port turning left. I
said to Jack, across from me, and to everyone: "Move! Fast! Don't stop for anything. Go!
Go! Go!" We raced down the ramp, Jack and I side by side, the men closely following.

Buildup of Vehicles and Equipment
By the end of D-Day, the Allies had landed more than 150,000 troops in
France by sea and air. Thousands of vehicles, hundreds of guns and about
4,000 tons of supplies had also been landed. More soldiers and supplies
were pouring ashore to continue the advance on D-Day-plus-one.
The Canadian assault troops stormed ashore in the face of fierce opposition from
German strongholds and mined beach obstacles.
