St. Kilian Catholic Church
Sunday, November 9 2014
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be
also.” (Luke 12. 34)
When I was a boy, my mother spent a great deal of time
at our church, St. Dominic in Oyster Bay. Mom was a
homemaker with four children, and dad was employed by
Shell Oil and commuted each day to New York City. There
were no lectors or Eucharistic ministers in the 1950s, before
the Vatican Council. But there were organizations like the
Holy Name Society, which attracted my dad, and the Legion
of Mary that drew some of my mother’s time and energy.
During the time of the Council, my mother became involved
as a catechist, taking the basic course in theology offered by
the diocese, and as the years continued she ministered on
the liturgy committee, adult formation committee and
became a lector at mass. Eventually my dad too began
lectoring in the parish. I can remember my dad and mom
arguing about the amount of time mom spent ministering in
the parish. Dad: “Joan, I think you love Jesus more than
you love me!” Mom: “That’s right, Jim!”
During our annual reflection on our stewardship of
financial giving, each of us has to ask ourselves how much
we love Jesus. What we do with our time, personal talents
and financial resources are indicators. They are a measure
of our holiness. I know my mother and father contributed to
the parish weekly mass in the offertory, using the envelopes
that were provided. Although I never knew how much
money they were placing in the envelopes. I do recall that
the Christmas donations of each parish family were
published in the bulletin!
Using money to support the works of the church:
Liturgy, Spirituality, Faith Formation, Outreach, Catholic
schools, maintenance, modernization, and administration of
the buildings and grounds - honors God.
Giving to God is about making God our top priority
each day, effectively turning our lives around. “You cannot
serve both God and material possessions (mammon).”
So many concerns demand our attention. Giving a
percentage of our financial treasure to God is pushed to the
background. Sadly, God may get the leftovers at the end of
the week rather than the first fruits of our labors.
Early on as a priest I discovered the importance of
planning, and then following through on my plans. We will
be doing this as a parish in consultation with our Pastoral
Council and via surveys and questionnaires of all
parishioners. So too, our financial giving to charity needs to
be planned as we do our personal
budget. Our giving of donations to St.
Kilian and other charities ought to be
in proportion to our blessings-the
income that we have from God. Like
love itself, this level of giving needs to
be sacrificial, causing us to alter our
lifestyle somewhat.
Until I heard about the spirituality of stewardship over
25 years ago, I reasoned that I had already given my life to
the service of Christ and the gospel. Why did I have to give
a percentage of my income as well? The answer that I began
to hear in my conscience, the voice of God within me was
to trust and let go. When I began doing this I found a deep
sense of peace and loving union with God and my neighbor.
Peace, Father Bruce

As we pray today for an increase of spiritual gifts, we are
reminded by the Bishops’ Pastoral on Stewardship that good
stewardship of the Church “means cherishing and fostering
the gifts of all, while using one’s own gifts to serve the
community of faith.”
Living Stewardship:
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish
who use their God-given gifts to serve others, especially
through our parish’s ministries as well as out into the
wider community.

ST KILIAN YOUTH
This past Wednesday, Nov. 5, our 8th graders received
the sacrament of confirmation from Bishop Andrzej
Zglejszewski, Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of
Rockville Centre. Confirmation is the sacrament in
which a person is sealed with the Gifts of the Holy
Spirit first received at baptism, and when a person
becomes a fully initiated member of the Church. We
would like to thank all of the catechists who worked so
hard these past few years to prepare the students for
the sacrament. Please take some time to pray for these
young people and their families as they reach this huge
milestone in their Catholic lives.

A Way of Life
Stewardship News - Commitment Weekend
“For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith
without works is dead.” James 2:26
Over the past few weeks we have reflected upon several ways for
each of us to belong more deeply to Jesus and to His Church.
We looked at ways to take a step in our prayer lives, in our
participation and celebration in the life of church and
acknowledged that we are accountable for all that we have been
given. Our journey and examination is intended to lead us to
take action.
Commitment Weekend challenges us to do just that - commit to
action. We are each individually called by God to participate in
the tangible mission of Jesus. Our baptism and that which
follows confirms our acceptance of that mission. It defines our
lives - what we say and don’t say, what we do and what we don’t
do.
Commitment weekend is the time when we declare in writing our
intention to take a step on our faith journey. Any step we take in
giving of ourselves should be:
1) Planned: The decision to give is just that – a decision. It
requires prayer, reflection, thought and time. It is a careful,
intentional response to God’s generosity.
2) Proportionate: Our giving is proportionate to what God has
given us. Our response to God’s generosity in our lives should
be proportionate to what we have received from God.
3) From Our Substance: The proportion of our gift becomes
sacrificial when it comes from our substance rather than our
abundance. When we give out of our substance, we are
changed in the process.
4) In Thanksgiving: The most complete way to thank God for all
that we have been given is to live a life of generous,
responsible and joy-filled stewardship.
5) A Gift: No gift is truly a gift unless it is given freely without
reservation or condition. Once our decision to give is made, we
should be confident and be at peace with it.
Through our commitment and sacrifice we belong more deeply to
Jesus and to His church!

St. Kilian Respect Life
WE MADE IT !
OVERCOMING SENSITIVITY
Last Sunday was the final day of our
recent 40 DAYS FOR LIFE campaign.
As reports continue to pour in from
around the country and world, we
know one thing for sure: God has
worked miracles in Forty Days.
When we act out of our grand soul, we are generous,
hospitable, big-hearted, and warm. Conversely, when we
act out of our petty soul, we are paranoid, bitter, overprotective, cautious, and small-hearted. When we feel hurt
it is all too easy to act out of the petty half of our souls.
Today there are babies alive who had been scheduled to
be aborted during that time. Instead of becoming an
abortion statistic, they will have birthdays next June or
July because their moms had a chance to turn around at
the last moment.
There are also women who are finding hope and
healing after an abortion.
There are abortion center workers who. at the beginning
of this campaign, complained about “those people”
outside praying. That was before God went to work on
their hearts and led them to quit the abortion business.
No harsh weather, discouragement or persecution can
take away the joy of seeing a baby saved and a mom
spared a lifetime of regret.
Thanks to all who joined us in prayer and
sacrifices as we kept vigil during these past
blessed 40 Days.

Of course we can always rationalize our bitterness,
coldness, and pettiness by appealing to our sensitivity. We
feel slights and insults deeply precisely because we are
deep. There’s truth in that. The more sensitive we are, the
more deeply we will feel both love and its betrayal. But (and
this is the point) we need to see our hypersensitivity as
something to be converted from so that we can be resilient
enough to absorb the bumps and bruises of everyday living.
Nobody can live for any length of time within a family or a
community without hurting others and without getting hurt.
The challenge is to have the resiliency to live with that.
Henri Nouwen used to say that one of the key elements in
spiritual conversion is to move from hostility to hospitality.
All major spiritualities tell us the same thing.
In Tibetan Buddhism, the bowl is the image for resentment.
In it is contained all our bitterness, disappointment, and
disillusionment. We sit holding that bowl in our hands. We
can either pour it forwards, so that the resentment flows
away from us, or we can tip it onto ourselves, allowing all
that poison to infect us. Our happiness depends upon which
way we tip that bowl.
How can we let go of our hypersensitivity? A priest that I
know once gave me this advice: Whenever you feel stung
and hurt, pull away, sit in prayer, and stay there until the
pain softens enough so that you can face others with
warmth again.

Oblates of Mary Immaculate, is president of the Oblate School of
Theology in San Antonio, Texas. [email protected]

ustedes?” (1 Cor 3, 16).
