GREAT HUNTING SEASON!
year chapter member Tom Sellin successfully harvested a
40 inch Cape Buffalo. That evening, while celebrating his
trophy over a couple of scotches, he asked if they would
donate a safari for a wounded warrior. They enthusiastically agreed to provide a complete safari including three
trophies, a Blue Wildebeast, an Impala and a Warthog at a
value of approximately $5,000. With the donation in hand
Tom then asked the board if the chapter would donate
a table for wounded warriors at the banquet. The board
voted unanimously in support of the
request. Tom then worked with Idaho
Veterans Network (IVN) to put together
a group to fill the table.
That was just the beginning. Batteries
Plus Bulbs store on Cole Road in Boise
owned by Tom Sellin, Jr. donated frequent flyer miles to cover the round trip
airfare in Business Class to Africa. (Retail
value: $8,000) Chapter president Walt
Clemmens contacted other providers
to cover additional items, including Out
West Tannery in Northern Idaho to donate the tanning ($400); shipping and
handling to the tannery from Seattle by
International Freight ($600); Taxidermy
supplies from Research Mannequins
($450); Mounting of the trophies by
Imperial Taxidermy, Bennett Taxidermy
and Clemmens Taxidermy ($2,000);
Transporting the tanned animals to the
taxidermists by Walt Clemmens ($200);
A Remington Model 700 rifle in 7mm
Remington Magnum with scope, bases
and rings from Sportsman’s Warehouse
in Meridian ($ ); Chapter member John Pearson donated
three boxes of ammunition ($150);Walt is still working with
Delta Airlines to secure a donation of shipping the trophies
from Africa to Seattle. If he is not successful, the chapter
will cover the cost ($1,200). The combined value of these

bass fishin’!
The IVN selected Matt Thorusen as the recipient of the safari
package. Matt joined the Marine Corps in 1999 at the age of
19. He served 2 combat tours in Iraq as a Tank Mechanic. After
completing his active duty in 2003 he used his skills as a tank
mechanic to work as a large truck mechanic. He then joined the
Marine Corps Reserves in 2004 and returned to Iraq when his
unit was called up. During that tour he was in a truck rollover
accident and suffered injuries that resulted in no longer being
able to perform as a mechanic.
Since returning to the Treasure Valley Matt has been involved
in volunteer work as a Unit Commander with the Gem State
Young Marines, working with troubled or disadvantaged teens.
He also volunteers with the IVN as a mentor to wounded vets.
He is currently working on a Masters Degree in Social Work at
NNU with the goal of making a career working with veterans.
