LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
My Fellow Chapter Members,
I am writing my first President’s letter while here at the SCI Convention in Las Vegas…and this event is
astounding! The size and number of exhibitors is nothing short of amazing and it must be the largest hunting
show in the world! Other folks who have attended have always said I would be impressed and they were
right…this is a bucket list “must” for anyone who loves hunting and travel.
The SCI Board of Directors has its winter meeting during the SCI Convention so a lot of my time has been
spent on those activities. As you probably know each Chapter President is a member of the SCI Board of
Directors and with over 200 Chapters that makes for a big Board. SCI is a very well run organization and the
meetings are smoothly and efficiently run. This is a big credit to the SCI professional staff of over 100 men
and women and to the numerous volunteer members who serve SCI either in an elected Office or in another
capacity.
The primary topics at these meetings are focused on hunter advocacy in some way…that is why SCI is here.
These days the hunter is the target of many groups and we are far outspent in every election, every lobbying
effort, and every advertising campaign. The good thing is that we win a lot of the “contests” whether they
are a fight over an anti-hunting law in a state or a fight over new federal regulations aimed at the hunter.
Common sense and good wildlife management science do usually win…as long as the decision makers and
the legislators get the whole story! The main point here is that we must never give up the fight. Never!
The Northern New Mexico Chapter of SCI just had its annual fund raising banquet on January 31st. It was
a great success with over $90,000 raised from our auction and other activities. This funding will be used for
hunter advocacy efforts both here in New Mexico and in Washington, D.C., wildlife conservation efforts
worldwide, and to support hunter education. The banquet was a great success because of the hard work by
your Chapter Board of Directors and staff. Next year will no doubt be even better, with a terrific selection of
hunts, firearms, art, furs, and other items up for auction and raffles.
Finally I would encourage those of you who are not members of Chapter to join and be an active member!
I also encourage you to send your hunting stories to share with the membership, and engage. We are
determining dates and planning several events for the rest of 2015 and we would love to see you there at our
sporting clay shoots, our big bore shoots, or at a Chapter meeting!
Best,
Rik Thompson
President, Northern New Mexico SCI

NEWS
BANQUET AND LIVE AUCTION
Thank you for your attendance and participation during our
Banquet and live auction. We had fantastic donations from
Out of This World Taxidermy, Ron Peterson Firearms, Scott
Daniels, and many more.
The evening started off with some live music played by
the Sons of the Rio Grande, as everyone came in, perused
the silent auction items and put in their bids. We had a few
giveaways, then moved on to dinner. We kicked off the live
auction and that’s when things got exciting!
Live auction items included a Centennial Colt pistol, fine
art and sculptures by Lorenzo Ghiglieri, rifles donations,
and hunting extravaganzas from as near as Lincoln, NM to
Venezuela and Africa.
Proceeds from the auction will go towards hunter advocacy
efforts both here in New Mexico and in Washington, D.C.,
wildlife conservation efforts worldwide, and to support hunter
education.
We couldn’t have done this without the support of our members
and our community! Thank you all for your attendance and
participation! And thank you to the board of directors of
NNMSCI for all your hard work!
Thank you to our supporters and donors!
