This agreement states that the land The City of Calgary owns is the land that HVCA is granted permission to use, providing that HVCA abides by the outlined governing policies. A business plan and lifecycle study outlining a maintenance plan for the Outdoor Rink and Storage shed are in the governing policies and have been provided to The City by HVCA. The LOC is clear on what responsibilities of The City versus those of the community are. HVCA volunteers are responsible for removing grass at least one (1) metre around our Outdoor Rink and Hidden Hut every spring, summer, and fall. HVCA volunteers also remove snow and maintain ice inside our Outdoor Rink throughout winter. All other grass and snow removal within Hidden Valley and Hanson Ranch fall under the responsibility of homeowners and The City of Calgary through their 3-1-1 service. Hidden Valley/Hanson Ranch do not participate in The City of Calgary ‘Enhanced Community Tax Levy’ for extra grass and snow removal, as well as flower planting. In order for this Levy to take effect, a petition with a minimum of 67% household approval is required. You can count on city employees to keep our neighbourhoods safe and clear — in any weather. Big storms often don’t give you much warning. A city like Calgary needs a team in place that can hit the streets with a few hours notice. Fortunately, that’s just what we have. When the snow flew early this year, Calgary’s city employees were prepared: plowing streets and sidewalks, clearing downed branches, trees and other debris, salting and sanding. We’re your reliable, dedicated team. So when some politicians talk about replacing experienced public employees with for-profit contractors, know that it comes at a price. One local photographer has mastered the skill of capturing happy moments for parents to cherish forever. Tantrums and tears will come and go, but they’ll soon be a distant memory as you proudly show off photos of your adorable, smiling cherubs! The lady behind the lens is Rosie Moyer of Little Laughs Photography, which specializes in newborn, maternity, child and family photography. This year, Little Laughs won an honourable mention in Calgary Child magazine for Best Family Photographer. Rosie’s photography has also been on the cover of Birthing Magazine and in several novels. Hidden Valley because of the great community; the wonderful schools and our neighbours are awesome! Most of my clients return year after year for photos. Having the pleasure of photographing their children as they grow is incredibly rewarding. I have been honoured to see some families from their first maternity shoot through to their five kids!” Rosie often books shoots six to seven days a week to work around busy family schedules. While she is full for Christmas, she currently has a special offer on limited rush slots. Shoots are by appointments only. To book a session or to find out more call 403-208-5562 or email [email protected]. The studio is located at 11130 Hidden Valley Drive NW, Calgary. Rosie started her business more than a decade ago to fill a much-needed gap in the market. “When I had my daughter 11 years ago, I was frustrated at the pushy sales and high print costs of other photographers. It was also rare to get full copyright of the photos. To fill this gap in the market, my husband and I started Little Laughs Photography with the goal of supplying copyright-free, high quality memories on CD-ROM. This meant parents were not restricted by overpriced print packages and were free to print their family photos however and whenever they liked.” Raising children is not cheap, so by having a home-based studio, Rosie is able to charge her clients much less. Little Laughs also has a no pushy sales, no additional fees and no hidden costs policy. Photography is the perfect creative outlet for Rosie and she loves her job. “Over 11 years my collection of props and backdrops has grown so much! I showcase the hundreds of props and backdrops on my website (www.little laughs.com) and I am very flexible if you have your own ideas. Some clients even bring along their family pet!” By working from home, Rosie is able to spend more time with her family and be part of the local scene. “We chose T h e O ff i c i a l H I D D E N VA L L E Y / H A N S O N R A N C H C o m m u n i t y N e w s l e t t e r I november 2014 11 Sports Report Our indoor soccer program is in full swing and our three teams are having a great time out on the field. We have two U8 teams and one U10 team this season. We didn’t get enough registrants to field a U6 team this year but we will still offer it next season in hopes that there will be enough interest for that age group. I would like to reiterate that at the AGM in June, I moved from the Sports Director position on to the second Vice President of the Hidden Valley Community Association. I will continue to oversee the sports program but unless someone steps up to manage baseball and outdoor soccer, the community can expect some major changes in the spring. We have some wonderful, dedicated volunteers who coordinate our indoor soccer and hockey programs so those programs will continue in the same format as in previous years. Without dedicated coordinators for outdoor soccer and baseball, we may have to look to outside organizations to provide programs to our members. Please email me at sports@hiddenhut. org if you are interested in helping out. Our hockey registration opened on October 15 and will remain open until December 30. Please make sure to register your players before the deadline at ww.hiddenhut.org. Hockey season will begin as soon as the weather is cold enough to maintain ice in our rink, usually around early December and will continue as long as the weather holds. We have programs for ages 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14. Registration for all age groups is $70. This is a great opportunity to allow your children to learn some hockey skills and strategies while keeping the cost low. Our parent-volunteer coaches focus on skill development while keeping things fun and active and safe for the kids. Community Membership of $30.00 is required to play. This year we are trying to start an adult shinny hockey league. Come out have some fun on the outdoor rink. If you are interested in participating please email sports@ hiddenhut.org. The Hidden Valley sports program is run completely by volunteers. We do need you to volunteer to keep the program running. To register a volunteer position is mandatory. Laura Corbet Second Vice-President november 2014 I Great news Publishing I Call 403-263-3044 for advertising opportunities SIMONS CREEK Registration and Frustration One of the things I have noticed from year to year is the fluctuation in numbers in the 38 Simons Creek scout group. I am never sure why it happens? Some people suggest that it follows the growth of the community. Most of our members come right from Hidden Valley/ Hanson Ranch and as kids get older they aren’t as involved in scouts. Then when the older families move away and newer younger families move in, our membership grows again. Who knows, in our group we just roll with it from year to year. Each September we have a registration that opens up for new members. With scout guidelines, our numbers are dictated by the number of volunteer leaders we have in each section. For example, if we have three parents that volunteer to lead our Cub Scout program, we can have a total of 15 kids in that group. If another parent volunteers, we could another five kids to the program. Some years we end up short of leaders and end up having to limit the amount of kids we can take in our programs. It isn’t something we like to do, but we don’t have a lot of choice. We need the parent volunteers to run the programs, easy as that. This can sometimes lead to frustration as some parents can’t get their child into one of our programs. We do understand and sympathize with you if that happens, but we can’t force parents to volunteer as leaders. It is up to them to step forward and participate in the program with their kids. On another note, all four of our sections got off to a great start this year. Camps were planned and attended. Meetings were held each Thursday night. Bottle Drives were held. Lots of kids and leaders had a blast participating in many different activities, from hikes and tours to games and crafts. Hopefully everyone in Hidden Valley bought lots of popcorn? It is a big fundraiser for our programs and without it we would be hard pressed to do the events we do for the kids. It is certainly a hectic time of year for all of us with school, work, sports and tons of other activities, but I always look forward to a fresh start in scouting for all the kids, new and returning, young and old, they always come in with tons of enthusiasm and fresh ideas. This just gets the leaders pumped up and ready to go for another year. By now we are part way though our year and looking forward to Christmas break and a chance to relax before we get back into it in January. Winter camps, snowshoeing, hikes in the snow and even some indoor events highlight our winter activities. We also keep up with our fundraising and once again we will have our “After New Years” bottle drive to raise funds for our summer camp trip to the pacific Coast Jamboree out on Vancouver Island. Make sure to keep those bottles and cans for us and we will see you after New Years. We have several girls playing each year and they have just as much fun as the boys. 10) Without the players and parents that come out to help out, there is no HVCA hockey program. The urban coyote now lives in nature surrounded by urban development. Citizens report seeing coyotes and a few have negative interactions with them. But does that mean you need to be afraid of coyotes? She will explore how coyotes live in the city, what challenges they face, and how we can co-exist without fear. the Friends of Nose Hill by Anne Burke Shelley Alexander at the U. of C. Geography department handraised coyote pups while researching pack behaviour and non-lethal deterrents. She will be the guest Alexander led a guided walk around Nose Hill, which supports a small group of coyotes in an urban green space. She describes what type of habitat (in parks like Nose Hill) is important to coyotes and answers whether coyotes were living in these places before the city was built. Or, are coyotes “invading” cities, like you hear in the media? Next to spring denning, another critical conflict time is fall for the “dispersal season”, when coyotes reaching maturity leave the pack to fend for themselves. This is a period of stress for coyotes, and when hungry, they will sometimes roam residential areas looking for food. This summer there were concerns over wild animal trapping in the city, as well as how we manage the encroachment of bears and cougars. Or are we in their space? Urban wildlife is a reality, and experts from the Calgary Zoo as well as Alberta Fish and Wildlife will bring forward an Urban Wildlife Strategy. The city can be a better custodian of good animal welfare practice. Animal and Bylaw Services already plans to meet with other agencies. Be pro-active to avoid conflict with animals like beavers, by planting trees along the river, placing wire around tree trunks, and providing under-dam drains to control water levels. A cougar found prowling at the South Calgary Health Campus delayed many police officers who waited for the Alberta Fish and Wildlife officials to arrive. Of course we need to respect the potential for harm to the public. The Minister of Justice & Solicitor General announced a review of the Provincial Government’s response in this situation. People with allergies might complain and pets might misbehave. Some airlines no longer accept pets on flights as cargo or carry-on luggage; most airlines have blackout periods around holidays. The airline industry and international import/export laws are constantly changing rules and regulations. If you intend on flying with your pet, research and having a backup plan is essential, never assume the same rules apply even months later. Small pets traveling as hand baggage can check in with you normally, then you carry them through the security scanner, while the cage is screened on the belt. Phoning directly I was recently able to reserve premium seats at the front of the plane with my dog, but I was warned if anyone complained people and pets are consigned to the back rows of the plane. I have also encountered problems flying with large dogs as cargo when the cage didn’t fit through the baggage door of a smaller plane. Always know the dimensions of your cage and total weight of the pet and cage when booking a flight. Animals flying as cargo tend to be much more difficult to coordinate. Pets flying in the cargo hold have to be delivered to the airline’s cargo depot hours prior to flight time. Cage requirements are strict. Pets must be able to stand fully upright within the cage. Two bowls for food and water must accompany the pet. Food requirements depend on the length of the flight. You can teach your dog to use one of the closed water bottles to avoid spillage in the cage. They resemble a hamster bottle and are attached to the outside of the cage with a nozzle running into the cage. A leash and collar should also be attached to the cage. The cage should be clearly marked and the doors secure. Make sure your pet is adequately identified. Tattoo, microchip, and a collar with identification identify my pets. I’ll take no chances. Try to only book your pet on a direct flight or keep to the same carrier. There are companies which will take care of all the hassle if you fly your pet around the globe. If you’re taking a pet to Australia, New Zealand, or the British Isles, complicated and extensive vaccination protocols, blood tests, deworming protocols, and documentation make an animal travel broker absolutely necessary. Preparations take several months. Only a current rabies certificate is required to travel with a cat or dog into the U.S.A., but airlines may still require an additional recent health examination with a certificate to board your pet. Pets under twelve weeks of age, too young to have a current rabies vaccine, can no longer enter the United States as of this summer. Past studies have shown over-sedation to be the number one killer of pets being flown. Only sedate your pet if you fear his panic could result in injury. A non-sedated pet may be scared, but he is better able to control his body’s temperature, and less likely to aspirate vomit if air sick. If you arrive at the airport and the outdoor temperature at your destination or current location are too extreme for your pet’s safety on the tarmac, the airline will refuse to accept your pet as cargo. Have an alternative plan and be flexible. Most major cities including Calgary have kennels that will pick up and deliver pets to flights. As a professional worrier, I still find flying my furry children extremely stressful but adequate preparation has allowed me to have many wonderfully uneventful journeys. by Jennifer L. Scott, D.V.M. The federal department of Veterans Affairs Canada states that November 11 is a day of “remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace”; specifically, the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and all conflicts since then in which members of the Canadian Forces have participated. The department runs a program called Canada Remembers with the mission of helping young and new Canadians, most of whom have never known war, “come to understand and appreciate what those who have served Canada in times of war, armed conflict and peace stand for and what they have sacrificed for their country”. With rapid growth comes the challenge of finding schools for all these students. Funding for new school construction hasn’t kept pace with growth, particularly in new communities. As a result, we bus about a third of our students to schools where there is space. To meet this pressing need, the CBE is planning the construction of 12 new schools, three major modernizations and two replacement schools, all to open in 2016. New K- Grade 4 schools for Panorama Hills, Tuscany, Auburn Bay, New Brighton, Copperfield, and Evanston. New Grades 5 – 9 schools for New Brighton–Copperfield, Evergreen, Mackenzie Towne, Saddle Ridge, Rocky Ridge–Royal Oak. Modernization of Bowness High School and Jack James High School, and turning the former Harold W. Riley school into an Aboriginal learning centre. Replacement of Christine Meikle and Elbow Park schools. The Province is also building a new northeast high school to open in 2016. In addition, the Province announced Sept. 22 that it would partner with the CBE to build four starter schools. They will be built in phases to get students into classes before the entire school is complete. It also announced funding for modular classrooms for Westgate School and for the planning of a new south Calgary high school. 403-268-3727 • [email protected] 1/2V www.calgary.ca/ward4 Councillor Chu The future of your main streets Main streets are active areas that attract Calgarians to socialize, work, shop, dine, celebrate local events and are often important transportation routes.
