Our SRC meets fortnightly, with students representing all Years 7 – 12, discussing issues that have arisen regarding facilities, processes and procedures in our school daily practice. Our Chair of School Council, Mr Chris Goldstone, recently attended a regular meeting and was so impressed with the professional practice with which these meetings were led, demonstrating executive level expertise. As a result this group of students will allocate expenditure from their budget according to the needs they see fit. No other school demonstrates this effective practice for hearing student voice. Congratulations to every student who is a member of this team and our thanks to Mrs Jan Makepeace, the co-ordinator. School Fees At our School Council meeting this week the Council endorsed and approved the 2015 schedule for school fees and levies. The increase next year for tuition fees and course levies is just 3.9%. This increase is significantly less than previous years and is less than increases implemented by comparable schools in our region. We are also pleased to be able to provide increased fantastic facilities, which have required major capital investment. These include: • The construction of the Trade Skills Centre due for completion and to be operating before mid 2015 • The construction of the Lecture Theatre • Installation of new playground equipment at both campuses We have also invested significant resources into the ongoing professional learning and development of our teaching staff, which results in the best teachers for our students, using the latest strategies and teaching tools. It is great that we can provide a school that has excellent teaching staff and superb facilities, yet provides education at such affordable value. Noelene Wright, Assistant Principal Head of Secondary Creative Arts News Year 4 Collaborative Art Day Last week we had a tremendous day where students from Year 4 visited the Mahers Lane art rooms to create decorative fish shapes with Mrs Nash for the Sunshine Avenue Campus and attend an art workshop with Miss Hope. The fish, which are painted with acrylics using fine paintbrushes, are vibrant and highly decorative. They will have a gloss applied and be mounted alongside the other fish in the assembly The day was made a success by having our talented Year 9 and 10 Visual Arts students work with Year 4 on the day. It was a true privilege to watch the relationships and conversations grow between the students as they pondered and explored their imaginations to create their masterpieces. Thank you to the following students who assisted on the day: Jasmine Powell, Mia Nixon, Natalia Green, Hannah Roberts, Anneka Young, Eden Tokatly, Kobie Enright, Chelsea Feuerriegel, Jennifer Smith, Bella Skinner-O’Hara, Emily Chan, Emily Betts, Eirene Donnelly, Lachlan Powell, Darcie White, Syria Epton and CJ McCreery. We would also like to sincerely thank Mrs Liestra and Year 11 hospitality students Ali Archedeacon, Katrina Filippi, Caitlin Gosling, Annbella Johnson, Natasha Simpkins and Emma Smith for making a healthy lunch for us all. Below are some reflections from the students who participated: “We learned how to scratch and do heaps of other great techniques to produce our fish. The fish turned out great and were heaps of fun. The Year 4 art day was a massive success. All of the fish were finished on time. The Year 4 kids had a great time at the Mahers Lane campus. Olivia Moloney helping students excel “We were taken up to the high school by bus. Everyone was noisy and excited. I felt such a happy feeling when we arrived and I was anxious to get to the art room. We had lunch provided by the Food Technology students. We had wraps with a side of an apple and cinnamon muffin, choc chip muffin or a cookie. My favorite part was seeing the finished transferred image with Miss Hope and the collection of painted fish. They all looked amazing. I can’t wait until we get promoted to high school students next year!” Cooper Robins “When we arrived we had to walk down lots of flights of stairs to get to the art room! The technique that we used with Miss Hope was oil stick transfer. We made pictures of superheroes. Year 9 and 10 art students were there to help. After lunch we switched class and painted wooden fish with Miss Nash to add to the mural at the junior school at Sunshine Avenue. The art day was fun. Thank you Miss Hope, Mrs Nash and the Art and Food Technology students, it was an excellent day. Jamie Nash HSC Body of Work and Year 10 Art Exhibition “The ANZAC Spirit” – best students submissions will visit the Australian War Memorial. The Returned and Services League of Australia is providing 90 Year 7-9 students an opportunity to participate in an expenses paid visit to the Australian War Memorial. Students are required to prepare a submission on the topic “The ANZAC Spirit-what it means to me”. The submission can be photographic, written, diagrammatic or an artwork. Submissions at school will close on Friday 28 November. They will then be forwarded to the Tweed Heads and Coolangatta sub-branch for judging. The commemorative visit is being held in March 2015. Full details can be collected from Student Administration. HSIE Faculty Year 8 Geographers study aquatic ecosystem Recently, Year 8 Geographers participated in an excursion to Ukerebagh Nature Reserve in South Tweed Heads. The aim was to study an aquatic ecosystem, human impacts and aspects of traditional Aboriginal culture. Students looked at the role of the Duffy Street artificial wetland in filtering urban runoff into Ukerebagh Passage, and then used scoop nets to sample a wide variety of water bugs, crustaceans and small fish living amongst the mangroves. Students then visited the bora ring nearby at the Minjungbal Cultural Centre. This excursion complements students’ current studies of With a vast depth of understanding into the postmodern our HSC Visual Arts students present their ideas, thoughts and opinions through their HSC Body of Work that highlight an accumulation of art practice and their own personal journey. The Body of Work is worth 50% of their HSC Visual Arts mark and are marked externally by a panel of HSC Markers at school. The works range from drawing and painting to ceramics and digital media. Many of the works incorporate a collection of work and are highly conceptual. Along with the HSC Artworks our Year 10 Visual Arts students have created an exhibition of their works for sale in the Library for everyone to view. The artworks show a vast array of styles and techniques, are vibrant, detailed and inquisitive with some hinting a sense of the surreal. Many of the works express a deep connection with colour exploring the use of expressive line through etching. We also have a raffle with art packs and chocolate for prizes. Tickets are $1.00 each or 3 for $2.00. These are for sale in the Library or in the canteen during lunchtime on Thursday and Friday. All are welcome to visit the Library before 4.30pm each day to see both exhibitions. Bryson Coverdale, Director of Faculty of Human Society and Its Environment Hospitality News Year 9 Food Technology It is not often that we see a large group of Lindisfarne students at Mahers Lane who are all under 4 feet tall! Except when the Preschool Possums and Koalas visit. Year 9 Food Technology once again hosted a healthy lunch for our Sunshine Avenue Preschool students who visited Mahers Lane on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. As part of their unit “Nutrition through the life cycle”, the Year 9s investigated a Preschooler’s nutritional requirements and put this into action to plan the event. Hospitality Excursion / Work Placement Year 11 Hospitality students were invited to set up the dining room for the Business Excellence Awards Tweed Shire (BEATS) at the Civic Centre Murwillumbah on Friday 10 November. Students not only earned work placement hours, but also learnt the art of setting tables, cutlery and crockery for this major event in the Tweed region (and how tiring working on your feet all day can be!!) Both the Year 9s and the Pre-schoolers had a wonderful time and it was great to see the interaction between students from both campuses. Michelle Cooke and Melissa Leistra Barista Coffee Training Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students travelled to the beautiful Byron Bay hinterland region to experience barista training at Zentveld’s Coffee plantation near Bangalow. Barry Woods, Director of VET and Careers Mathematics News Mathematics Competitions Each year there are a number of mathematics competitions that students may become involved in. I draw your attention to the following article in the Art of Problem Solving web page: http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Resources/articles. php?page=pc_competitions where it discusses the potential benefits and pitfalls of Mathematics competitions. Overall the benefits outweigh the pitfalls and provide a fantastic opportunity for students to encourage an interest in Mathematics, to prepare for competition (in life, it is omnipresent), teaches students to value intellectual pursuits and that effective performance requires practice. This year, a number of students competed in the following competitions and the results are shown below.
