reetings Wa:k Community;
On behalf of the 2013-2014 St. Francis Feast Committee we would like to take this
opportunity to say “THANK YOU!” It takes lots of time and effort for the Committee to
ensure that the feast days run as smoothly as possible. We would also like to thank
those family and friends who came to help prepare for the feast; as you may all know
there are only 24 members on the committee. The days leading up to the feast take a
toll on our personal lives, but we have made the commitment to sacrifice for Saint
Francis, the Committee, and the Wa:k Community. The feast days are put on for a
reason, and if you don’t know the reason you might want to ask an elder and talk to
them about it.
The Committee is especially encouraging those young parents, teenagers, and anyone who might not know what the feast and traditional days are all about. On October 4th, 2014; the reason for the early ending of the dance was due to gangs and/ or
those who just simply cannot handle their drinking. RESPECT is what the gangs and
others seek to gain, but in reality they do not follow that same
reasoning. Fighting over colors is not going to give you respect and bringing your
gang and violence to a feast or traditional event in Wa:k Community will not gain your
respect either.
There are many other events within the Community of Wa:k that the other
committees put on such as the Wa:k Indian Days, Saint Francis Xavier days,
Christmas, New Year’s, Holy Cross, Mary Feast, Pow-Wow, A’atha, Rain
Ceremony, Re-burial, and many other events that occur within the Wa:k
Community. Those who do not know what these events are about or why we have
them, we urge you to come out and volunteer as they prepare for these days.
Come see how much hard work and dedication is put in, and maybe you’ll see the
respect and gain respect to have an understanding that gangs and being
disrespectful is not what we Wa:k O’odham are about.

Photos of students of what they have accomplished so far in Basket Class:
Everyone has started their knots (the very beginning of their baskets). Joey (one of the instructors) was
very proud of them, as it is difficult to do. Some students were able to get it right off the bat, and for others
it took a little longer. Every time someone was able to complete their knot, they would be awarded with a
round of applause.
We have had some ladies come all the way from Gila River to learn how to weave. They explained that a
lot of their traditions and culture are disappearing in their area, so they have to make the extra effort to
learn.

The following recollection is about service in the Marine Corps carried out on behalf of my country where people from all
walks of life coexisted. People such as the O’odham with their ways of living, I learned at an early age.
They worked hard at making a living often undergoing hardships for the sake of their families. They were people of faith
who showed what it means to have courage for whatever comes in life. Ways of a past generation of
O’odham which guided me well as I began my years of service.
Service that began at recruit training then made its way to stateside and overseas duty stations. One of the earlier
stations where ongoing learning began was San Francisco. It was the beginning of learning more and more about the
profession I had chosen. Not just by academic means, there were other ways such as interaction with experienced
noncommissioned officers who were sources of practical information.
In short, ongoing learning generated professional growth which over the years improved my service through acquired
knowledge. Eventually the day came when I was retired at Camp Pendleton, California.
Attending the retirement ceremony were John and Carmella Ignacio. John from the village of San Miguel, Carmella from
San Xavier. They , represented past and present relatives who along the way supported my service. After I was retired a
bouquet of flowers was presented to my wife Molly. She at the at moment, represented the military wives whose lasting
devotion inspired their husbands to carry on when the requirements of service demanded they by away.
In this regard, there were times when Molly faced yearlong family separation when I
was serving overseas. Difficult as it was, she took upon herself the
oppressive weight of family separation and then went on to take care of her
family with all that she possessed. She was always there, even overseas.
Molly was at my side when the 1st Marine Division band played “The Marines’ Hymn”
the final part of the ceremony. After the hymn ended, the band director gave an eloquent speech that graciously bid us farewell. And so, service in the Marine Corps
came to a close.

ARE
YOU
READY????
Looking back through history, there was a time when legal
binding agreements were based on a hand shake or a
“man’s word”. There were no paper documents needed
because a “man’s word” was “good as gold”. Over the
years and centuries, things have evolved and there came
a time when legal binding agreements became tied to
paper documents and signatures. This is the world in
which we live today. In today’s world, all legal actions
such as automobile and home purchases, land
acquisitions, marriage and death certifications, living or
deceased wills and even power of attorney issues all
require legal documentation along with the proper
signatures.
Your signature therefore carries lots of weight and is very
important. Your signature will determine what happens to
your home, your land, your possessions and even your
personal care, right to the end.
Here at San Xavier Housing, we have noticed over the
years that there are many people who, for lack of time or
possibly lack of instruction, have not taken the time and
put forth the effort needed to put all these things in order.
There are those who have not updated their Tribal or
Allotted Land Assignment Beneficiary status. There are
others who have no Resolution on their Land Assignments
and others still who, on Allotted Land, have not obtained
their Land Lease Agreement from the Bureau of Indian
Affairs. As well, there are no doubt many who have not
taken the time to have a Will prepared along with Power of
Attorney designations.
We would like to encourage existing home owners to
verify your Land Assignment status along with other legal
issues and take some time to put all these items in order.
If you need help with your Land Assignment, please feel
free to stop by the Housing offices where Tina Rodriquez
will be happy to serve you and help you get this done.
You can contact Tina at 573-4044.
If you need other type of assistance, please contact the
District Offices at 573-4000. The District’s Receptionist
can help you identify the proper department, person or
service that would help you the most. District staff, here
at San Xavier, are privileged to serve the Community and
will gladly assist to the best of our ability.
Thank you,
Housing Staff

A Fond FarewellSylvia Dawavendewa
It is with a sad heart that I bid a
fond farewell as the time has
come for me to continue my life’s
journey. I can’t express what a
wonderful experience it has been
working with everyone, especially
the staff, students and children.
Watching students grow and progress through school has been
rewarding; I only hope that we in
Education had a little positive
impact through our programs.
Parents you are the best partners, thank you for your support.
Please remember, all students,
whether special needs to honor
students can lead a satisfying
and productive life given the right
education, training, love and
15
support so advocate for them and
seek out the resources they need
regardless of their abilities.
Please, don’t hesitate to call on
education for assistance; the staffers are well-trained, experienced
and educated so they know how to
assist. I leave knowing the community is in the capable and dedicated
hands of exceptional individuals.
I will greatly miss the elders, friends
and partners. Simply can’t express
the gratitude I feel for the faith and
trust you all placed in me and my
staff over the years.
I leave a better person having
spent time in your beautiful community. I take with me wonderful memories and the honor of serving the

to our community. Be on the look out for more film screenings in the future.

Community Liaisons
Stacy Hernandez & Celina Mesa
Hello Wa:k Community,
I hope you are all in good spirits and ready for the
holiday season that is fast approaching. November is Native
American Heritage Month so be on the lookout for events that
will take place throughout the month (U of A, PCC, Museums,
Libraries, schools, etc.).
All our programs are under way with great turnouts.
We are currently at capacity for our After School Program and
have a good mix of high school and middle school students for
Voices of Our Youth.
I would like to remind parents who use the missed bus service
that they must call Education (520.807.8624) by 7:30 am. I
know some students do not get picked up until after 7:30 am
but if you’re going to be late call anyway; you can always cancel the call. Parents must call to give us permission to
transport their student. Students have been walking in to request a ride. We do not want to prevent students from attending school, but you must understand that the Community Liaisons have other engagements so when we make two missed
bus trips it delays our schedules.
Lastly I would like to send well wishes to Sylvia Dawavendewa
and a heartfelt thank you for a job well done and for the many
hours of service you have contributed to the Wa:k Community.
I wish you well in your new endeavors!
Good Day to all!
I hope everyone’s Halloween was lots of scary fun! I
know I personally enjoyed it. I would like to give a shout out
and “Congratulations” to two of my students in the After
School Program for 4th – 6th grade. “Congratulations” Angel
Siquieros for Student of the Month and Jacob Maya for a
citizenship award. I thank all of the parents for helping your
children succeed in school and enrolling them in our programs. All of my students in the After School Program are
doing well and I will make sure to keep on them about their
homework.
We took a walkabout fieldtrip around the Education
campus to identify plants and their uses. I plan to make
fieldtrips a regular part of the 4th-6th class so look of notices.
Lastly, I would like to say farewell to Sylvia, as for the
short time I got to know her, she did have an impact on me
and I thank her for giving only the best towards our students
education. Thanks Sylvia! You will be missed and are definitely appreciated for the effort in our community. I wish you
success in your near future.
Hope everyone enjoys the upcoming holidays. God
Bless!

Administrative Assistant-Margaret Alvarez
Holidays are just around the corner and we are half way
through the school year! It is important for parents and
community to support our youth as they conquer challenges to reach their goals this year in homework, sports or any
activities they may be involved in. It gives them the determination to move forward in a positive direction and not
only makes them feel good inside but is a reason to keep
going. Encourage them to do well and to study as best
they can.
Tutoring sessions are available at the Education center if
needed for students in grades K-12th. Now is the time to
get started please don’t wait until the last minute, it puts
more stress on the students as they try to gather all material needed or studying when there is not enough time.
Please give us a call, we are here as a benefit to you and
your child.
I also encourage parents to take advantage of any workshops or presentations we hold here at the Education center. We have different programs that come through with
valuable information we want to pass on to you. All the
workshops are designed to meet the needs of our community. I had the opportunity to sit in the Family History Workshop and may I say it was very interesting and took me
back to my childhood, made me think about where I came
from and brought back memories of loved ones who may
have passed on.
It was a lot of important information and I am excited to
find out my family’s roots. There may be another workshop
held in the future so keep an eye out.
As we gather together with our families for the Thanksgiving holiday please remember tell your parents, sisters,
brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, grandkids
and friends that you appreciate them for being apart of
your lives and thank them for all they do for you. A little
goes a long way, even just a simple “hug” and an “I love
you”; appreciate all you have been blessed with. May you
all have a wonderful Happy Thanksgiving!
