BANKS TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE
MARYLAND STATE HALL OF FAME
The Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame will
be inducting Earl Banks who was a legendary
football coach while at Morgan State and
served as the Athletic Director from 1960
through 1973. He was also enshrined in
the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992, a
year before he was killed in an automobile
accident in Baltimore at the age of 69.
This year’s Hall of Fame event will be held
on November 13, 2014 in Baltimore, Md.
Banks, who completed his career
with a .839 win-loss percentage, will be
honored with the John Steadman Lifetime
Achievement Award. The Award recognizes
a Maryland citizen whose lifetime career in
sports has brought honor and distinction to
Maryland and its citizenry.
Banks, who led Morgan State to a 95-30-2
record in 14 seasons from 1960-73, was
MEAC’s first superstar coach. Banks’ teams
never had a losing season, and he oversaw
the Bears’ into the MEAC from the CIAA,
where they won five conference titles, made
four bowl appearances, had three unbeaten
seasons and fashioned a 30-game winning
streak from 1965-1968. He was named CIAA
Coach of the Year - 1962, 1965, and 1966.
As an assistant coach and head coach
he sent forty-one of his players to the pros,
including Willie Lanier, Leroy Kelly, John
Fuqua, Raymond Chester, Roger Brown and
Sherman Plunkett.
As the coach at Morgan State, he said,
“The players are going to be scholars first.
They come for an education, and 90 percent
get degrees - not just physical education but
in pre-medicine, pre-law and business. Two
days a week I talk life, not football. College
football is great for today’s life. The world
is looking for leadership and discipline.
Football offers that experience.”
Banks played football for Wendell Phillips
High School, Chicago, and was all-state
in 1943. He was a stocky, 5-8, 210 pound
all-star guard for Iowa, 1946-49, and played
one year professionally with the New York
Yankees of the NFL in 1950.

LEAD COUNCIL
Senior QB Robert Council earned the
starting nod from Hull in Week 1 and
delivered a strong performance.
• The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Camden (SC)
product completed 18-of-28 passes for 285
yards (2 yds shy of matching career-high)
and threw a career-best three touchdowns. It
marked the most passing yards in a seasonopener by the Bears in the last eight seasons.
•Council followed that up with 57-yards on
7-of-18 passes, including a 21-yard TD to
redshirt freshman Amonta Poteat. He also
rushed for 83 yards on 11 carries.
•In Week 3, he ran for 73 yards on 12 carries
and scored a pair of TDs vs. Bowie State.
• He surpassed 2,500 passing yards for his
career after tossing for 168 yards and TDs vs.
Howard in Week 4 ... he also rushed for 90
yards and a TD and was selected the NY Urban
League Classic MVP.
• He had an efficient game during Week 6 at
Florida A&M, he threw for 121 (7-of-11) and
ran for a pair of TDs.
• He accounted for a pair of TDs, including
a 15-yd TD pass to Andrew King in the final
seconds to help beat N.C. Central.

ROLLING WITH THE TRENCH MOB
The season is only at the midway point,
but MSU’s offense has already rolled up
over 2,500 yards of offense, including a
record-setting performance by RB Herb
Walker Jr. One thing to keep in mind
is that the Bears offensive line should
absolutely not go unnoticed.
• The O-line, aka. “The Trench Mob”, has
plenty of veteran experience with senior
center Clarence Swain, senior left guard
and preseason All-MEAC first team selection
Darren Pinnock, redshirt, senior right
guard Randon Key, and junior backup
tackle Daniel Onwuegbu. Talented true
freshman Matthew Thompson handles the
right tackle position.
• The Bears offense is averaging 219.6
rushing yards per contest (No. 1 in MEAC/
No. 19 in FCS) and is averaging 359.6 total
yards of offense per game (No. 5 in MEAC).
HERB SET SCHOOL RECORD
Senior LB Cody Acker led the Bears’ defensive unit last season by
recording 97 tackles, including 10.5 tackles for loss.
#BearDown
@morganstbears
Herb Walker Jr. made quite the splash
during his first start of the season. After
Lamont Brown III had his season ended
as a result of an ACL injury, the coaching
staff tabbed Walker as the starter for the
Holy Cross game -- Walker did the rest.
• Walker carried the ball 29 times for a
career high 271 yards and two TDs. In doing
so, he became the school’s all-time single
/morganstatebears
morganstatebears
game rushing leader.
• Jason Jackson, who finished with 251
yards against Savannah State at the
Proctor & Gamble Ohio Classic on Sept.
17, 2005, previously held the record.
• Walker was named the MEAC Offensive
Player of Week 2, and was named College
Football Performance Awards (CFPA) RB
Honorable Mention.
• Walker had 20 carries for a game-high 180
yards and two TDs vs. Bowie State in Week 3.
• He posted 141 yds and a pair of TDs
vs. Howard in Week 4, and had 111 yds
and a TD vs. Norfolk State (MEAC No. 2
rushing defense) in Week 5, he scored 4
TDs in Week 10 at Hampton;
• Walker currently ranks in the FCS No.
10 in rushing yards (1,049 yds), No. 10 in
rushing yards per game (131.1 ypg).
• He has scored 14 TDs (12 rushing/2
receiving) so far this season.
FINISHING TOUCHES
Morgan State has been pretty good at
scoring in the red zone. Through the first
nine games, the Bears have scored 25-of28 (89%) times inside its opponent’s 20
yardline. MSU ranks No. 1 in the MEAC
in red zone scoring ... 25 of the 28 scores
have been TDs (T-No. 15 in FCS).
SKILLON BOUNCES BACK
Morgan State quarterback Moses Skillon
was far from perfect at #4 Villanova where
he threw three picks in his first career
start of the season, but what he did
achieve was a rebound from an imperfect
Week 9.
• Skillon completed 21 of 37 passes
for 252 yards, a touchdown run, no
interceptions and the game winning
touchdown to lead Morgan State to a
38-35 win over Hampton. He got rolling a
30-yard pass to Andrew King on the Bears
first drive en route to the first score of the
game. And the 6-6 redshirt-junior walked
into the end zone for a 2-yard TD to put
the Bears up 14-0 early in the first quarter
• He padded his number with a screen
pass to electric running back Herb Walker
Jr. who raced 17 yards to paydirt for
the winning score. It was Skillon’s third
touchdown pass of his career.
FROSH & SOPHS HAVE 23 of 33 TDs
Young players have dominated for 23 of
the Bears’ 33 touchdowns this season. This
total includes 14 TDs by Herb Walker
Jr., three by Thomas Martin, a pair
by Lamont Brown III, and TDs catches
by Landen Malbrough and Amonta
Poteat and a TD run by Orlando Johnson
and Ricky Fisk. And when you include
sophomore Chris Moller’s 47 kicking
points, those two classes have scored 185
of the team’s 245 points.

GAME 10 • NOV. 8, 2014
BEAR RUSH
The Bears rushing offense has been stellar
so far this season, averaging 219.6 yards
per game thus far - ranks 19th in the FCS.
MSU put up 356 yards on the ground
against Holy Cross for its first 300+ yard
rushing game since logging 323 at N.C.
A&T in 2007. The Bears already have nine
rushing plays over 30 yards this season.
MSU finished the 2012 season averaging
149.7 yards per game on the ground, and
increased its output to 182.8 yards per
game during the 2013 season.
ACKER STANDS OUT IN MICHIGAN
Cody Acker may have been wondering
why he was sore after the game at Eastern
Michigan; it’s probably because he recorded
a career-high 19 tackles to lead the Bears
defense. The senior, a 2013 All-MEAC Third
Team selection, was named the MEAC’s
Defensive Player of Week 1. He currently
ranks leads the team with 78 total tackles
(No. 3 in MEAC).
CHRISTOPHER ROBINSON T-NO. 4
IN FCS IN SACKS
R-senior outside linebacker Christopher
Robinson’s four sacks against Bowie
State (Sept. 13) were the most by an MSU
player since 1989. He has 45 tackles, and
11 sacks ranks T-No. 4 in the FCS.
• The Dunbar HS product also ranks No.
3 in the MEAC with 14 tackles for loss
(No. 25 in FCS). Impressive stuff for a 6-2,
225-pound player who originally joined
the Bears as a walk-on.
• Robinson is closing in on the school’s
single season sack record set by James
Dozier in 1990 (14.5), and the career sack
record held by Willie Thompson (26, 199497).

GAME 10 • NOV. 8, 2014
MSU’s RETURN TO GREATNESS
This past May 20, Morgan State University President
David Wilson began acting on recommendations from
the university’s Return to Greatness Steering Committee.
The group, commissioned by President Wilson in June
2013, had been charged with conducting a strategic
assessment of Morgan’s football program, identifying
best practices for operating a Division I Football
Championship Subdivision (FCS) program, and making
recommendations to help Morgan football reclaim its
winning legacy.
From 1935 to 1980, Morgan State’s football
program attained the status of legend. During that time,
the Bears won a total of 23 conference championships:
19 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
(CIAA) and four in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
(MEAC). In addition, they were one-time NCAA
Mid-Atlantic College champions, three-time Orange
Blossom Classic champions and a one-time winner of
the Tangerine Bowl (now the Capital One Bowl). During
those same years, Morgan produced 18 All-Americans
and scores of players who went on to success in the
National Football League, among them, four NFL Hall
of Famers: Willie Lanier, Len Ford, Roosevelt Brown and
Leroy Kelly.
“Winning athletic programs boost enrollment,”
said Kevin M. Banks, Ed.D., Morgan’s vice president
for Student Affairs and co-chairman of the steering
committee. “We know there’s a correlation…. You look
at any major team that wins a championship or gets
close to one: it boosts applications.”
Knowing these facts, Dr. Wilson took steps toward
a “Return to Greatness,” while the steering committee
was still deliberating. After meeting with Dr. Banks and
Athletic Director Kerr, he directed the enhancement of
academic enrichment for scholar-athletes to ensure their
success at MSU; the establishment of a training table for
scholar-athletes for nutritional guidance during dinner
meals; the assignment of customized space for the
football team to hold meetings; the renovation of men’s
and women’s basketball locker rooms and the football
coaches’ offices; and the establishment of programs
to connect MSU athletic legends with current Morgan
athletes, to help the younger players know the legacy
of MSU football. In January, the university hired a new
football coach, Lee Hull, who has already had success
with Morgan’s initiative to increase in-state recruiting of
scholar-athletes. These measures, most of which were
later included in the committee’s recommendations,
are part of the ongoing effort to boost the success of
Morgan football.
“The recommendations by the Return to Greatness
Steering Committee will guide us to building a stronger
competitive edge and graduating student-athletes at a
higher rate,” Kerr said.
“I call upon all alumni and friends to support our
athletic program,” Dr. Wilson said, “as we seek to return
to the glory years of Morgan athletics.”

MORGAN STATE BEARS FOOTBALL GAME NOTES • 11
LEE HULL
Head Coach
Lee Hull was introduced by Morgan State
University Athletics Director Floyd Kerr as the
new head football coach of the Morgan State
Bears on January 9, 2014. Hull has been the
assistant coach at Maryland since 2008, and has
built an impressive coaching resume.
Hull, 48, becomes the 19th head football coach
in Morgan State history.
Hull comes to MSU after spending the past
six seasons (2008-13) with the University of
Maryland as wide receivers coach. During his
time there he helped coach Darrius Heyward-Bey (Indianapolis Colts) and Torrey
Smith (Baltimore Ravens) to first and second round NFL Draft selections, respectively,
as well as building one of the most talented receiving corps in the ACC this season.
Hull also helped developed LaQuan Williams (Baltimore Ravens), Tony Logan (New
England Patriots) and Quintin McCree (Winnipeg Blue Bombers) who went on to
careers in professional football after leaving College Park.
Hull also has experience coaching other positions. He tutored running backs his first
two seasons at Oregon State and wide receivers the last three. He coached three OSU
All-Americans, including a pair of wideouts, and was a part of four bowl wins.
In 2006, he coached Sammie Stroughter to All-America status in one of Oregon
State’s best seasons. The Beavers posted a 10-4 record, second-best in school history,
including a win over Missouri in the Sun Bowl. That season, Stroughter led the Pac10 Conference and ranked 10th in the country in receiving yards per game (92.4).
Stroughter was on the watch list for the 2007 Biletnikoff Award, which honors the top
receiver in the nation. He went on to be selected in the 2009 NFL Draft by Tampa Bay.
In Hull’s first season in charge of OSU wide receivers, Mike Hass ended his stellar
career as a first-team All-America selection and the winner of the 2005 Biletnikoff
Award. Hass posted the third-highest receiving yards total (3,924) in league history.
He is currently a member of the Seattle Seahawks.
Hull also coached current Atlanta Falcon’s running back Steven Jackson during the
2003 season. Jackson was a first-team All-Pac-10 and third-team All-America choice
as a junior, his final season at OSU. He was a first-round draft choice in the 2004 NFL
Draft.
Prior to his five seasons at Oregon State, Hull spent five years (1998-2002) at his alma

becoming wide receivers coach, as well as overseeing the kickoff coverage and kickoff
return units. He also went on to become the passing game coordinator.

GAME 10 • NOV. 8, 2014
THE THREE HEARTBREAKS
The Morgan State Bears last heartbreaker
was at Norfolk State, a 15-14 loss. The play of
the game hinged on a pass interference call
on a 3rd and 2 from the MSU 5. NSU backup
QB Tyler Clark scored on the ensuing play
with a 1-yard run to help to seal the win.
• It marked the third game in which the Bears
could’ve easily been in the win column.
• In Week 1, Morgan State had a shot to tie
the game down the stretch with a 55-yarder...
however, before the snap, the Bears were
called for offsides that pushed kicker Chris
Moller into a 60-yard try as time expired -- it
didn’t come close.
• In Week 2, the Bears lost at Holy Cross,
29-26, on a last second 1-yd QB TD run as time
expired.
• The Bears have lost three games by a total of
7 points.
• The Bears recorded their first close win
by rallying from a 20-7 deficit to upset N.C.
Central 21-20 during MSU’s Homecoming on
Oct. 18.

NO HUDDLE
• Morgan State QB Robert Council
has thrown 130 passes without a single
interception so far this season.
• PK Chris Moller nailed a 38-yard field
goal to help the pullout a 38-35 victory vs.
Howard in Week 4 ... it marked the second
time of his career that he’s booted in a
game-winner - he connected on a 27-yarder
as time expired to give the Bears a 24-23
win over North Carolina A&T on Nov. 9, 2013
at Hughes Stadium.

Morgan State redshirt sophomore running
back Herb Walker Jr. has been added to
the 2014 Walter Payton Award Watch List,
announced today by The Sports Network.
• Walker will attempt to be the first-ever
player from the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference to earn the prestigious award.
• Walker took over as the Bears’ No. 1
option after the first game, and he hasn’t
looked back. The small, elusive back has
gone over 100 yards in five of his last seven
games, including twice over 200 yards,
while scoring 12 total touchdowns. Overall,
he is averaging 131.1 rushing yards per
game, ranking first in the Mid-Eastern
Athletic Conference and No. 10 in the
nation.

Morgan State’s offensive line, “The Mob”,
has kept its’ quarterbacks well protected so
far this season.
• Under the direction of new O-Line coach
Dwayne Foster, the largely veteran group
has only allowed 10 sacks, ranked No. 1 in
the MEAC and on pace for 13 for the year.
• Last season they allowed 22 sacks (ranked
No. 4 in MEAC).
• This week the offensive line gets a test
from N.C. A&T. The Aggies are one of the
league’s top pass rushing teams and have
posted 23 sacks, which is third-best in the
MEAC.
LOST ON SUMMERS’ ISLAND
Morgan State CB DeShawn Summers is
putting together another great season for
the Bears. No matter who he’s faced this
year, Summers has not only shut some
of the league’s best receivers down, but
he’s done it solo, with man coverage. He
doesn’t have the gaudy statistics that he did
a season ago, however it’s hard to get stats
when teams aren’t even throwing to his
side of the field.
• Last season, Summers led the Bears with
three interceptions.
• So far through nine games, the Hampton
(Va.) native has 33 tackles (25 solo) and
leads the team with five pass breakups and
he recorded his first interception of the
season during a win at Hampton.
• He also has a tackle for loss and a forced
fumble.
• The Bears have allowed a league-low
151.8 passing yards per game (No. 6 in
FCS) and are among the nation’s leaders
ranked No. 7 in pass efficiency defense
(100.7).
• A cornerback like Summers creates more
flexibility for the entire defense.
