CORBIN Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times Rabid defensive tactics and proof of a very versatile offensive arsenal catapulted the Cranford High School football team way over the Voorhees Vikings, 42-7, in a battle of the unbeaten at Memorial Field in Cranford on October 10. The 4-1 Vikings appeared to be keying on quarterback Jack Schetelich and receiver Luke Christiano, but they quickly found out that there more than just two offensive threats. Despite, Schetelich (23 rushes, 58 yards) had touchdown (TD) runs of two yards and six yards. He also completed eight of 10 passes for 171 yards and a pair of TDs. Christiano, who rushed six times for 31 yards, had two recep- tions for 77 yards, including a 31yard TD grab. What the Vikings did not expect was the exploits of running back Donavin Walker and the leg of Joe Norton. Walker, who carried seven times for 71 yards, got the opportunity to run the pass route that Christiano had been so familiar with and pulled off a 50-yard touchdown reception. The Cougars’ defense pressured Viking quarterback Charlie Rodenberger and limited him to 26 rushing yards in the first half and another 51 in the second half. He managed only to complete one pass for 23 yards. The Vikings totaled only 140 yards rushing on 31 carries. Defensive back Kevin Trotter (2 tackles, 8 assisted), linebacker Niko Cappello (tackle, 7 assisted, sack) and lineman Nick Ballas (4 tackles, 2 assisted, sack) were all over Rodenberger. Jake Matthews, Mike Palumbo, Brian McGovern, Ethan Toms and Colin Scanlon also made their presence well known. “It’s really the whole team. Everyone had their own time to take a shot. Everyone had their chance to get that kid,” Trotter said of Rodenberger. “The Rodenberger kid is an outstanding athlete. You watch him on film you hold your breath, because every time he gets it, it looks like he can score. We didn’t stop him because he broke a few runs, but we were able to contain him for the most CONTINUED ON PAGE 16 More photos at Ballyhoo Sports Brooks Crandall for The Westfield Leader and The Times BRINGING DOWN A TIGER...Raider defensive lineman Rashaad Perry, No. 50, brings down Linden running back Kyle Phipps as Raiders Ed DePaola, No. 75, Giancarlo Lorusso, No. 52, and Kobe White, No. 9, close in for the kill. THOMAS 174 YDS, TD; JENSEN FUMBLE RECOVERY TD Tigers’ Late Touchdown Stuns SPF Football Raiders, 20-14 By BROOKS CRANDALL Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times More photos at Ballyhoo Sports David B. Corbin for The Westfield Leader and The Times PRODUCTIVE EVENING...Cougar running back Donavin Walker, No. 36, had a 50-yard touchdown pass reception and carried seven times for 71 yards against the Voorhees Vikings in Cranford on October 10, Cranford also won big, 42-7. Weichert Upset was in the air with the hosting Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School football Raiders, who jumped to a 14-0 lead in the third quarter, but a late surge and a successful fake punt resulting in a 40-yard touchdown play awarded the 5-0 Linden Tigers a 2014 victory on October 11. From the start, the 2-3 Raiders stopped Linden with consecutive three-and-out series led by linebacker Kevin Maxwell (8 tackles, sack), Rashaad Perry (5 tackles, sack) and Andrew Ciccarino (10 tackles). The Raiders and running back Emendo Thomas, who rushed 23 times for 174 yards, with effective blocking from fullback Maxwell, marched deep into Tiger turf until they were denied advancement on a fourth-and-1 at the 10 yard line. Early in the second quarter, Linden threatened when quarterback Juwan Dolbrice connected on a 24 yard dart throw to wide receiver Tymir Hinton, but the Raiders then shut them down with linebacker Thomas making some crucial stops. “Emendo is a tremendous athlete and a tremendous competitor and he is now our outside linebacker too. We started him slow, he had a knee injury over the summer, and each game he has done a little more for us. He is a warrior and he works hard.” said SPF Head Coach Jon Stack. The Raiders’ first scoring drive was ignited by a critical third-and-9 conversion with a perfect throw from quarterback Marques Taylor (4-for9, 21 yards) to wide receiver Cameron Smith. Thomas added a 30 yard gain. Thomas then angled to the outside, eluding a Linden defender and cruised into the end zone untouched for touchdown with 6:26 left in the half. The PAT was successful. The Raiders defense, led by a great play from defensive end Ryan Jensen (5 tackles, 3 sacks), stuffed Hinton for a loss and registered another threeand-out. Linden, however, put together another drive with Dolbrice connecting on two throws and driving to the Raider 22. Lineman Rashaad Perry answered with a five-yard throw for a loss. Jordan Jones broke up a long pass in the end zone then a few plays later, Linden was forced to punt and the Raiders ran the ball until time ran out. On the first series of the second half, Thomas had a 40-yard run but CONTINUED ON PAGE 14 Real Estate Mortgages Closing Services Insurance ® Sales Associate of the Month Renata Dias Top Sales for the Month of September OPEN HOUSE: SUN., 10/19 1-5PM WESTFIELD.
