Kurt: Our Parish Family The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Patrick: Please join me in congratulating Fr. Valdi, the staff, and the parish family of SS. Cyril and Methodius as they celebrate their 130th Anniversary as a faith community. I look forward to joining our neighbors and Bishop Jack Gorman at the 4:30 P.M. Mass this Saturday, November 8th. We ask God’s blessings upon this faith family as they look forward to the next 130 years and beyond. On Monday evening, November 10th, from 7 P.M. – 9 P.M. in the church, Dr. Mary Amore from Mayslake Ministries will be with us to share her insights about “Renovating Our Inner Spirit.” You will recall that “Doctor Mary” was with us for Eucharistic Minister training as well as for our 2014 Lenten Parish Mission this past spring. She is a very dynamic and engaging speaker who brings much wisdom with her about the spiritual journey. “Doctor Mary” is part of our Inspiring Speaker Series as we continue to celebrate our 175 years together in faith. I know this promises to be a very entertaining and informative evening for all of us. Our brothers and sisters at SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish will be hosting us for the Tri-Parish Anointing Mass and luncheon on Saturday, November 15th beginning at 11 A.M. Fr. Valdi, Fr. Brian and myself, along with other priests from the area, will be sharing this special sacrament of healing with those who wish to be anointed. As you already know, this awesome blessing has meant so much to me in my own recovery and healing process. I hope you can join us for this special bi-lingual celebration. On Sunday, November 23rd at the 5 P.M. Mass, we welcome Fr. Ken Carlson, Pastor of St. Benedict and St. Isadore Parishes in Blue Island. As we give thanks for all the veterans of our community and those who presently are serving in dangerous parts of our world, Father Ken will share with us his experiences as a “parachuting chaplain” during the Iraq War. Father Ken was a student of mine when I taught at Mundelein Seminary back in the 1990’s. I especially invite the young people of our parish family to meet and visit with this courageous and charismatic servant of Jesus Christ. Our Tri-Parish Advent Mission will take place December 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. I have invited Fr. Bill Bruning from the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas to be our mission presenter. I met Fr. Bill during my time away last winter in Minnesota as he battled his own addiction to chemicals. He has a great story to share with us about his “new life in Jesus Christ.” As you hear Bill’s story and meet this man of deep faith, you will soon discover, as did I, that he is a walking miracle. Please try and save these dates! Finally, beginning on Tuesday, I will be away from the parish on retreat with Monsignor John Canary to celebrate my own “first year in recover.” I will be praying over the writings and teachings of St. John of the Cross. I will be back in time to celebrate weekend liturgy with you. Please keep me in prayer as you will be in mine. God’s blessings of hope and healing, Renovating the People St. Patrick’s inspiring speaker series continues… Monday night “Renovating the People” Monday, November 10 7pm to 9pm at St. Patrick Church Dr. Mary Amore U ND E R ON RUCTI CONST Join us for an evening of prayerful reflection as we explore the ways in which the Lord is calling us to renovate our hearts as we celebrate our baptismal identity as members of the assembly and as sons and daughters of God! Time will be given for discussion. Dr. Mary Amore holds a Doctor of Ministry Degree and Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Catholic Theological Union. Dr. Amore is the author of Primary Symbols of Worship and the Call to Participation, as well as the author of the new DVD series, Eucharist: Journey to Transformation, Healing and Discipleship. A Cardinal Bernardin Scholar, and distinguished member of the North American Academy of Liturgy, Mary has been a presenter at the LA Congress, University of Dallas Ministry Conference, as well as a highly sought after presenter of parish missions and workshops. A monthly blogger for CatholicMom.com, Mary serves as the Executive Director of Mayslake Ministries in Downers Grove. THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA Page 3 Altar servers needed If you are in 3rd grade or older, consider being a part of our Altar Server Ministry. The rewards are great and can also contribute to needed service hours. If you were once in the server ministry and left, for whatever reason (too busy, wanted to sleep in… etc), please consider rejoining. If you would like to return for holiday Masses or weddings, please let us know. We are always in need of mature & experienced servers for special occasions. Server Training dates coming up November 13th & December 11th from 6:30pm-8:30pm each Mass takes place each weekend, why not be of service (look smart, and be really awesome) to our wonderful priests and parishioners? Call or email the Parish Office for a registration form. 630-257-4640 or [email protected] LEMONT FOOD PANTRY It's hard to believe, but the holidays are “right around the corner”. For many, it means lots of trips to the grocery store to get all the “extras” for the special meals we prepare. And as you are putting these special extra items into your carts, we ask that, if possible, you remember our friends from the Lemont Food Pantry. A jar of olives, a few cans of cranberry sauce, boxes of jello, instant potatoes, gravy...whatever you choose will help to make the holidays a bit more special for so many! As always, we say “thank you”, and as we head into this special time of your, may your blessings be many! St. Pat's Outreach Team The affordable housing crisis is a growing one in today’s society. Fortunately, PLOWS may offer a solution through the Shared Housing Program. Our goal is to match home providers, those persons with an extra room to share in their home, with individuals looking for a place to live. People participate in the program for economic reasons, companionship and to maintain independence in the community. This program serves all ages; however, one person in each match must be a senior. We interview and check for references for potential participants, introduce appropriate persons, facilitate an agreement between the provider and sharer, and are available for follow- up. Call 708-361-0219 or visit: http://www.plows.8m.com/shared.htm for more information. NEW SERVERS TRAINED IN OCTOBER! Hope’s on the Way to Washington, IL th The14 service mission for Hope’s on the Way, which will be our first commitment outside of the Chicagoland area in our home state. A 12 volunteer team, with 5 members from St. Pat’s, will leave Lemont on November 10-14, 2014. Our dedication is strong. We ask our volunteers to give us their time, talent, and energy, travel 160 miles and spend five days serving the needs of others. It is one thing for a volunteer to give a week to serve; it is another thing to ask them to make a financial contribution as well. Our success depends both now and in the future on your assistance. Please consider a free will donation: Cash or check. Make payable to St. Patrick’s Church Memo line: Washington Mission Nov. 2014 Please: Keep us in your prayers for a safe and healthy mission trip helping others in need. We have been participating in the National Red Ribbon week here at St. Alphonsus-St. Patrick School. You may have noticed the red ribbons that adorn the trees on our campus. Inside the school you will also find red ribbons everywhere, including two very large ones on our gym wall. Health classes and younger students have created posters that emphasize the themes of avoiding dangerous substances, making good choices and living a healthy lifestyle. Each morning this week, a student council representative has shared important information about the dangers posed by drug and alcohol abuse. On “Red Ribbon Wear Red Day”, the entire school posed for a photo under our Celtics sign that has been adorned with Red Ribbons this week. The photo has been entered and accepted into the Red Ribbon Photo Contest! Our school has the chance to win an additional iPad and $1000 that can be used for health education and drug prevention programs. In order to win in our region, our photo will need to get the most votes. Voting begins on the Red Ribbon website starting November 5th. We encourage you to tell all of your friends, family members, colleagues and school contacts to vote for our entry at www.redribbon.org. Thanks for supporting our students as they resolve to make good choices and live healthy lifestyles. 630-257-8012 [email protected] Child Lures Our Archdiocese mandates that the Child Lures program be taught in our Religious Education programs. Child Lures deals with basic personal safety skills for children, including how to protect themselves from child predators. It is taught each year to our first graders. If you have any questions or do not want your child to participate in this program, please contact the RE Office. Baby Bottles Thank you to all who participated in our Fall Service Project, raising money for the Women’s Center of the Greater Chicagoland Area. Many women and children in need of our help will benefit from your generosity. We will publish a total dollar amount as soon as it is determined. CATHOLIC HOME STUDY SERVICE (CHSS) SPONSORED BY THE MISSOURI KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, IS A MINISTRY THAT HAS BEEN OFFERING COURSES ON THE CATHOLIC FAITH SINCE 1935. COURSES ARE FREE, EASY, ENJOYABLE, AND FAITHFUL TO THE TEACHINGS OF THE CHURCH. http://www.amm.org/chss/chss.asp 573-547-4084 What is RCIA? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process by which the Catholic Church welcomes new members into its communal life. RCIA is a living experience of the Church, and not just a series of classes that teach knowledge about the Church. Although there is instruction in the facts of the faith, instruction is but one part of a larger experience of knowing and sharing with other members of the Church. **Note-We also have an RCIA process teens and a program for children as well . If you are interested in learning more, please contact your pastor or call Doreen at 630.257.2414. Also on November 20th, after praying the rosary, members of Women's Club will be having their monthly meeting at a local restaurant. All women of the parish are invited to join Women's Club and to participate in all activities. Page 5 ASK FATHER KURT Q: Dear Father Kurt: I am one of your “flock”. I know that August was a tough month for you and your mom as you mourned the loss of your brother, Mark, and now your dad, Henry. How are you both doing and feeling? Are you sticking with your “health plan”? Please know that many are praying with you and for you, especially as Christmas approaches. A: Dear Friend: Thank you for your kind concern and supportive prayers. For a very simple and humble man who worked his way up to Accounting Supervisor for the U. S. Postal Service, I am seeing that my dad sure impacted lots of people with his life. As I like to say, “He truly made a difference.” My mom and I are still receiving handwritten notes, cards, and Masses in his honor. They are very touching as well as consoling. I am reading each and every one to my mom, who is now having trouble with her eyesight. I am grateful to my “flock” for accepting Dad. One of his proudest moments he talked about quite a bit with me was when he shared “his story” of military service with you at Mass and with our school children. I know, through his sharing, those experiences made him feel personally like his life and his sacrifice still meant something today. Thank you for that gift to Dad and our family. He was humbled by your applause and your private moments with him. Mom and I are still hurting from the loss, but we take comfort from your faith and ours combined. I am grieving in a healthy way this time, unlike when I lost my brother, Mark. I have a “no-nonsense” support group of priests and laity who have all been in contact with me. One of the first people I spoke with was my Spiritual Director, Monsignor John Canary. He reminded me that Dad “gifted me in spades” through his personality and witnessing to be the strong, silent type. He strongly encouraged me to not carry the weight of this change for my family all by myself. Monsignor John, using Jesus as an example, helped me to see that even our Savior of the world needed community around Him when facing the challenges and crosses of life. Personally, I am talking my feelings out, all of them, with good listeners. I am exercising every day and eating much better. I see my doctor monthly. She is a doctor from India, who immigrated to this country. She is tough, but caring. She is also very skilled! My back is feeling much better. I am also seeing a counselor, to help me deal with my limits as a human being and my anxiety issues. My doctor is very closely monitoring my anxiety meds and painkillers. I am not self-medicating. I am in contact with my counselor, Peter, in Minnesota on a regular basis, and met with other professionals from Minnesota last month. I learned very clearly in my recovery last fall and winter that I cannot be “all things to all people”. I am grateful to the staff and to Mrs. Sue Raymond, in particular, for helping me to set healthy limits. Please continue your prayers for me as I promise my prayers for you and your loved ones.
