This year, he currently has only one film waiting for release and he now plays just two tennis matches a week. Still, that’s not bad, considering the veteran actor, producer, and director turns 100 this weekend! “People are always asking me for the secret of long life,” said Mr. Lloyd from his home in Los Angeles. “Well, I have no secret and I suspect it’s partly luck. But I do know one thing. You’ve got to stay active as you get older. And tennis is a great way to do that.” One of Lloyd’s memorable singles opponents, whom he first met in the 1940s, was a childhood idol. “Charlie Chaplin loved tennis and I was invited to his home by a friend to play,” recalled Lloyd. “We became good friends, played regularly, and after would sit on his sun porch and drink a Scotch Old-Fashioned.” Off the courts, Lloyd appeared in some 40 films and numerous TV shows but was equally comfortable behind the camera as director or in the front office producing. “Alfred Hitchcock hired me to direct many of his weekly mystery shows,” said Lloyd, who also produced more than 200 episodes between 19571965. “I’ve been directing and producing since my early Norman Lloyd played the villain in “Saboteur,” in 1942, and helped create this memorable Hitchcock film sequence, staged from the lofty heights of the Statue of Liberty. days in theater.” Lloyd and Hitchcock were no strangers on a train. The pair had worked previously on two films, “Spellbound” (1945) and “Saboteur” (1942). As a villain in “Saboteur,” Lloyd helped create a memorable Hitchcock film sequence, staged from the lofty heights of the Statue of Liberty. “Hitchcock recreated the arm of the Statue from the elbow up to the torch at full scale, on a Universal Studios stage,” said Lloyd. “The closest I got to the real Statue during filming was the base.” In a scene with Bob Cummings atop of the Statue’s torch platform, Cummings lunges at Lloyd with a gun. “Then I fall over the rail,” explained Lloyd. “Hitchcock was a master of ‘writing with the camera’ from his silent film days and wanted the scene in one take. So instead of cutting to a stuntman, he asked if I would do it. I was an accomplished tennis player at the time and quite athletic – not to mention being young and foolhardy – so I agreed to do a backflip over the rail.” Out of camera view, Lloyd says a platform had been constructed to catch him, but the stunt was still risky. “The platform was about 14’ high and covered with mattresses and a man was there to catch me and prevent me from rolling off. But in the scene, after I go over the rail, I grab onto a ledge and Bob tries to pull me up by my jacket, but the stitches begin to break and I fall. Hitchcock didn’t use any music in the scene, just the sound of wind which was brilliantly effec- Norman Lloyd (upper left) with fellow “St. Elsewhere” cast members (clockwise) William Daniel, Ronny Cox and France Nuyen in 1987. tive.” On TV, Lloyd was a regular in the groundbreaking ‘80s medical series “St. Elsewhere.” He played Dr. Daniel Auschlander in over 130 episodes during the show’s six year run. “The show dealt with subjects never discussed before on television,” noted Lloyd. “To my knowledge, it was the first time that AIDS was featured. It also examined issues such as the expense of dialysis for patients, and other topics included religious themes.” Lloyd can also claim one of the longest marriages in show business history – to stage actress Peggy Lloyd, who passed away in 2011. “A couple of days before she died, she asked how long we had been married,” recalled Lloyd. “I told her 75 years and she said ‘It should last!’ I thought that was charming.” As his Nov. 8 milestone birthday approaches, Lloyd knows exactly how Peggy would want him to celebrate. “My tennis friends and I are going to have a big tournament on my 100th birthday,” he said. “Perhaps at that age they may forgive me if I cheat a little.” NICK THOMAS teaches at Auburn University at Montgomery, Ala., and has written features, columns, and interviews for over 450 magazines and newspapers. NEW BUILDING DRUG CHARGES FM Woman faces multiple charges Public votes to name the new conservation building The Bonny Buyer North, November 5, 2014 7 Bears, Indians were part of life in Iowa’s early days JANE M. JOHNSON the next day, the squaws were sober enough to begin the trip. Caroline told them she would pay them more and give them much more food if they would get her home quickly. They arrived home the next day. [email protected] They arrived above the white settlement in eight days and then had to follow an Indian trail. It took ten days to get to the Indian trading house. They followed the road that led away from the river getting lost with nothing to eat but dried meat. They met 300 soldiers going in the opposite direction on the trail. The cow was startled by all the soldiers and music and ran off along with the Indian guide. They finally reached their destination but not until Charlotte fell off her horse with Caroline’s baby and dislocated the baby’s shoulder. In October, the men went further up-river to build a house to trade with the Indians. In a few weeks they returned and in a few days started down the river. William did not go with the men this time. But he did go to Sweet Home on business. Her maid left to return to the man who owned her husband. ALONE AGAIN Again, Caroline was alone and quite lonesome. She rode horseback every day and sang to keep from being so lonesome. One day while picking walnuts she encountered a large bear. She left the walnuts and ran to her horse. After that event, Caroline says she became more cautious about venturing out in the woods. One time (February 1836) while William was gone to Sweet Home, Indians came to rob the trading house. She gave pipes, tobacco, flour and venison and honey to the demanding Indians. She suspected they were stragglers from the Black Hawk war or a rebel band. They had been to the Raccoon and saw fires on the prairie and then heard the Sioux had killed some of their tribe on the Cedar. They were afraid so they decided to wait till spring to fight the Sioux. The keel boat that started down river sometime in late October or early November did not make it to the mouth of the DMR. It was caught in the freezing river about 50 miles downstream. So, William and his men left to retrieve it in early March. William hired an Indian boy to stay with Caroline but he was extremely afraid of the Sioux and would hide at any noise. Food was scarce; they ate honey and corn. He finally ran away. Caroline was alone with two babies and a big dog. Wolves ate the meat hanging on pole by a side door. The wolves threatened them every night. She held the door every night to protect her family. She blindfolded her dog so he couldn’t see them through the cracks in the door. Finally after eleven days according to Caroline, William and his men returned home with the keelboat. They started downstream and before long arrived at a trading house at an Indian town. Caroline writes that they expected to live here. William started down to the Mississippi to catch a steamboat to St. Louis. When he returned, Caroline went down to Sweet Home. It had been eleven months since she had seen a white woman. She stayed two weeks to rest and visit. FINDING HER WAY HOME She needed to find a way to return to home. Some squaws in a canoe came by going up the river so Caroline went with them. She slept at houses of white settlers overnight. When she could no longer find a house to stay, she slept at Indian camps. The squaws brought whisky along and on one afternoon wanted to stop early at an Indian camp. The squaws became drunk and began fighting. Caroline left the camp with her two children and sat on a log and cried. An old squaw who she befriended by letting her have flour and meat offered her a place to sleep at her camp. She sat up all night keeping the dogs off the children. Late in the morning, In June she went in a canoe with a half-Chippewa man to the Mississippi. They stopped to sleep at a tavern overnight. Caroline bought her Indian helpers meat and bread and the landlord allowed them to sleep in the house. The mosquitoes were so thick that Caroline stayed awake all night fanning them off her children. One night, she boarded a steamboat to Oquawka and then went to S. Phelps and stayed five days. TO KEOKUK Then she went to A. Phelps’s house. Her son Charles was born on July 17. She was waiting for a boat to come down the river to return home when William came up on a steamboat. In three hours a boat came down river and they went on board to Keokuk. They stopped at Campbell’s Tavern to rest. Caroline was feeble and sick (seems to be the same place she stayed on a previous trip). Two men, Jake West, an Indian, and a Frenchman were hired by William to take her upriver. William went to St. Louis and elsewhere. Again, Caroline stayed at homes of white settlers. Jake West got drunk. She found two Winnebagoes to help who knew a little Sauk to take them to the trading house. Within a few days they were home but the trip was not without peril. A thunderstorm occurred while they were on the river and nearly blew them over. They finally made it to shore safely and trudged up a steep hill to get to her cabin. The Indians carried the children. But the house was filled with sleeping Indians so she made a place for herself and slept. She felt rested and refreshed in a few days. Caroline asserted that her health was better now than she had experienced in three years. William returned home from his trip. JEFF HUNT/DAILY DEMOCRAT Building upgrades Upgrades began last week to the shelter house at the park in West Point. According to Paul Scott, above, of Paul’s Plumbing and Heating, work is being done on the bathrooms, the kitchen and masonry work at the building. The West Point Development Committee planned the work, which should be done in the spring of 2015. The idea is to have the building update completed long before the West Point Sweet Corn Festival so that families can continue to use the shelter for gatherings. LCHD offers assistance with ACA open enrollment The Affordable Care Act requires individuals to be insured with coverage that meets certain minimum standards. Individuals and families can access coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, which allows those seeking coverage the ability to “shop” by comparing plans, networks, and prices. This Marketplace has an open enrollment period that will begin Nov. 15 and end Feb. 15. This means that unless there is a qualifying event that changes a person’s circumstances, this is the only time individuals will be able to enroll in coverage with commercial insurers and take advantage of tax breaks. If individuals do not have minimum coverage or remain uninsured, they risk facing a tax penalty for 2015. CHIP (hawk-i ) and Medicaid are available year-round. Coverage through the Marketplace can start as early as the month following application. Small businesses can learn how to offer minimum coverage to their employees and receive tax benefits at the SHOP (Small business Health Options Program). To access the marketplace, go to healthcare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596. LCHD has three certified application counselors, Melissa Calvillo, Rachael Patterson-Rahn, and Leslie Klesner, available to help with enrollment. To discuss enrollment with one of the LCHD counselors call (319) 372-5225 or (800)4586672. At the time we had a small assortment of products including around 200 bolts of fabric and a few patterns, books and notions. However, what we lacked in inventory we made up for in high hopes and dreams for the future of our store. The goal was to create a fabric and quilting shop that would serve all our customer’s sewing needs and be the best in the area. Customer service is our number one priority and that’s what you will get from our fun and friendly staff. Whether you take one of our exciting and informative classes or just browse the store, you’re certain to find great ideas and inspiration for your next sewing project. Pictured: Ellen Bloomberg and her daughter, Jenny Heater Today, we carry over 2000 bolts of fabric and our selection of patterns, books and notions has increased as well. We have the largest selection of sewing, embroidery and sewing machines and are Southeastern Iowa’s Premier Sewing Machine retailer. We are proud to carry all the Pfaff and Baby Lock products including Baby Lock sergers with the exclusive ExtraordinAir and Jet- Air threading systems. Ellen’s Quilting Corner has come a long way from its humble beginnings. We have seen our store become a destination shop for sewers and quilters alike. Stop by today and see why we’re considered one of the top sewing shops in the state. As business owners for 26 years we wanted to advertise where we know our customers will be informed of what’s happening at Floors, Decor & More Abbey Carpet, and that is why we advertise in the Bonny Buyer and Daily Democrat. When advertising in the Bonny Buyer and Daily Democrat, they make sure we are satisfied by assuring our information for the ads are current and our ads are attractive. We see a positive response with our ads we place in both papers. When they have special rates or upcoming features our rep, Tracy Pauly, advises us ahead of time so we can take advantage of it. We recommend using the Bonny Buyer and Daily Democrat as it is our local community paper. 319-372-6421 • 800-798-8819 • P.O.
