200 Saginaw Ishpeming, MI 49849 (906) 485-1061 http://mqtcmcf.org NEWS - MCMCF Volume 14, Issue 11 November 2014 FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR Happy November to All. November is a great month, with Thanksgiving, and especially (for us hunters) DEER SEASON. My downstate colleagues are shocked when I tell them many U.P. school districts cancel school on opening day. We have made some changes to our Wi-Fi network to allow access to Facebook and other social media sites if you log in to the “Guest” wireless network. This network has no password. For those of you unfamiliar with Facebook, this is a great way to stay in touch with and share pictures with your family and friends. I was surprised to find the feature on Facebook called “FaceTime” which connects users both with audio and video. With this feature, my parents were able to visit with my niece and see their great-grand daughter in Washington who they hadn’t yet met. In trying to keep up with the times, we have also created a Facebook page for the facility. As a reminder, included in the newsletter are direct dial phone numbers that allow you to call directly to whomever you are trying to reach by phone. We encourage everyone to use these numbers! During October, we tried a “breakfast to order” on each wing. This included allowing residents that wanted fried eggs to choose how they wanted them cooked along with other options. There was a good response from everyone and the facility was full of the great smells of breakfast cooking. Thanks to our great Activities Department for taking the lead on this. Even though the residents enjoyed it, this type of program works best if they come down to eat in the dining room. I know that this has been in the newsletter for several months, but I’m told now that residents and families will be receiving paperwork from Upper Peninsula Health Plan (UPHP) about the new dual eligible insurance program, now called MI Health Link, at the end of November or early December. We will be happy to answer your questions as best as we can. Remember, this is not part of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). We have been told that if you do not respond to this mailing, you will automatically be signed up. If you are happy with the way things are now, you must optout. If you have any questions, Ruth or Beckey in the Business Office will be glad to help. Jerry Hubbard Honoring our Veteran’s Veterans Day honors ALL American veterans. Veterans Day is intended to thank veterans for their dedicated and loyal service to our country. November 11th of each year is the day that we ensure veterans know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made in their lives to keep our country free. Thank you! The 300 Wing Dayroom is used to display the lost items on the last Friday of every month (November Lost and Found will be held on the 21st due to the Holiday weekend). To accommodate Family members varying schedules, the articles are left in the room through the weekend. Please make an effort to check out the items that have been “lost”. It is our goal to have all of these items returned to the rightful owners. Please remember to clearly mark these items with a permanent marker or tag so they won’t become “lost” again. They include Tabitha Peredo and Danielle Garnett, Nurse Aides, Peggy , Dietary Aide and Taryn Gleason, RN. Please join me in welcoming these people to MCMCF. Emergency Preparedness Behind the scenes, Jerry Hubbard, Administrator, Mary Seppala, DON, Tina Johnson, ADON, Dee Perry, Education Coordinator, Dennis Henson, Physical Plant Manager and Dave Hammar, Personnel Coordinator have been putting final touches on the Emergency Preparedness Plan for MCMCF. The Plan addresses actions staff will take in the event of emergencies, including fires, severe weather, hostile incidents and other events which could result in evacuation, partial evacuation or sheltering in place for Facility residents. The plan follows the Incident Command System which designates a chain of command for responding to and managing facility emergencies. In addition, it includes emergency contact information, evacuation routes and memorandums of understanding with local vendors and evacuation shelters. In the near future, staff will participate in exercising the plan, in conjunction with the State of Michigan Region 8 Emergency Preparedness staff, based out of Marquette, by doing a table top exercise of for a partial evacuation of the Facility. This will help us identify any weaknesses in the plan ahead of having to implement a partial evacuation in an actual emergency. All staff will also be trained in the specifics of the plan, including plan location, evacuation procedures, staff roles in the event of an emergency, etc. David Hammar, Personnel Coordinator Save the Date We will be hosting our annual “Holiday Open House” on December 10th starting at 2:00 p.m. We encourage everyone to stop in for a snack or two. Ho-Ho-Hope you can join us for this casual, fun way to celebrate the holidays. THANK YOU The Activities Department would like to thank everyone who donated candy for the Trick-or-Treaters. The residents really enjoyed passing out the treats and having a treat or two themselves. Your generosity is appreciated.
