FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR
Happy February Everyone!
By now, residents/families eligible for both
Medicare and Medicaid should have
received notice that you are eligible to sign
up for MI Health Link that starts on March
1, 2015.
This is a pilot program designed with the
hope of better coordinating care for those
eligible for Medicare and Medicaid,
otherwise called “dual eligibles”. This
program will be overseen by Upper
Peninsula Health Plan (UPHP). We are
still learning about this program and
encourage you to contact Ruth or Beckey
in the front office if you have questions.
Groundhog Day 2015 has come and gone
and Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow
and predicts six more weeks of winter.
Presidents’ Day is on Monday, February
16th. A little history to share with you is:
It is celebrated on the third Monday in
February. It was established in 1885 in
recognition of President George
Washington, it is still officially called
“Washington’s Birthday” by the federal
government. Traditionally celebrated on
February 22—Washington’s actual day of
birth—the holiday became popularly
known as Presidents’ Day after it was
moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday
Holiday Act, an attempt to create more
three-day weekends and less overall
holidays for the nation’s workers
(Lincoln’s birthday, also in February, was
eliminated as a Federal holiday). While
several states still have individual holidays
honoring the birthdays of Washington,
Abraham Lincoln and other figures,
Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed
as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents
past and present.
February also has Valentine’s Day on the
14th and is my cue to get my wife flowers
because our anniversary is on the 15th.

Lending Library
During the month of January, we were
fortunate to have been the recipients of
books from the Peter White Library and the
Superiorland Library Cooperative. We were
excited to receive these books free of charge
and to receive so many large print editions.
Our Lending Library is open to everyone and
we ask that if you take a book, you return it.
When you get a chance, check out the library
located in the Main Dining Room.
Additionally, we are in the process of placing
bookshelves and “mini” Lending Libraries in
the 200 and 400 Wing dayrooms. Happy

Tami has been a real patient advocate for my brother.
She goes above and beyond to let him know that she
cares about his well-being and she is always
supportive and receptive to our needs, too. We know
we can call her for anything and she is always
prompt to respond. We are very grateful for her
compassionate care. You have an employee who is
not only a social worker, but an aide and nurse. I
would love to have her working on my team, but sure
am grateful she’s here for my family member. My
brother loves her.
Thank You Alice
Blizzard, our facility dog, made his first trip
for grooming on January 13th. He took a ride
to PetSmart in Marquette where Alice
pampered him and sent him back tail-awagging. Alice was kind enough to give
Blizzard his bath and haircut for free. Thank
you Alice!

Social Committee
The MCMCF Social Committee is independent of the facility but supported by the facility.
The main purpose of the Social Committee is to raise funds for the Annual Christmas Party
and Awards Banquet. Throughout the year, numerous fund raisers are held with the goal of
reducing the price of tickets for the Christmas Party and to give out as many prizes as
possible. Please support the fundraisers so the Christmas Party can continue to be a success.
Some of the fundraisers being held are 50-50 raffles, bucket raffles, prize raffles, dress down
days, bake sales, etc. Watch for the postings throughout the facility for the exciting, new
fundraising events being held in 2015.
WELCOME
Four new employees joined the Facility this January. They include Anna Williams,
housekeeping, Amy Carlson, a nurse aide, RN KaRissa Porter and
Jan Prey, dietary aide. Please join me in welcoming these new employees
to MCMCF. Also, for employee dental and vision coverage it switched insurers
from Guardian to Ameritas. The new dental and vision cards are in and
are available for pick up in the front office.

Every February the staff of MCMCF takes the time to
vote for the “Sweetest” Male and Female Residents.
This year the ballot box was stuffed full of votes with
the names of so many wonderful candidates. After the
votes were tabulated, we had our 2014 King and Queen
Valentine!
