SADANAND “Blood donation my passion,” says ICF employee DREAM COME TRUE! I had been a dreamer all my life but the one that I had at sunrise in my palatial house ‘Padmalayam’ in the village in Kannur was so surreal that I unreservedly rejected it as unhappenable but, with a hope that if Hitler could go mad, my mother, made of sterner stuff than Hitler’s composition, could brave the journey from Nairobi to somewhere in India across the Arabian sea and reach us. This was the dream that catapulted me from bed. For aeleven-year old, bed is heaven until disturbed. Mother had set sail in a country craft from Africa with my younger brother who was about 8, as steamers were busy carting war materials and soldiers and the hope of escape from Africa was dwindling day by day. Mother’s bravery was seconded by father whom his British bosses would not let go when Hitler was hitting them badly for sixes. So Amma and Kanthu, my brave brother, trusted wind power and sailed India wards reaching Kathiawar in Gujarat after nearly a month. Two huge tins of her special heavenly biscuits brought for her three children cooped up in Kannur saved the two from starvation as the sail boat had provision for less than 15 days only. From Kathiawar it was cattle class train to Bombay and a repeat class from Bombay to Madras from where mother telegraphed us which reached us through the telegram-runner Nambiar ten minutes after mother and brother reached home to a teary welcome by us all. That night the four children and mother cried, cried and cried, and pledged never to separate from each other. In that family of father, mother and four children, I, at 81, am the sole survivor now. I here by declare a war on wars. By Our Staff Reporter J. Jaishankar, a grade II technician of Integral Coach Factory, Perambur, has been donating blood to needy patients for more than 5 years. TREES Centenarian passes away Page 7 By RANDOR GUY He was one of the greatest sons of Mother India who sacrificed everything he had, his life, his career as a successful lawyer, his soul, body and blood on the altar of the fight for freedom of Bharat Mata. However, sadly, his contribution for the cause of the Indian Freedom Movement has not been properly recognised to this day by the powers that be except in a very haphazard manner. Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu, to give his full name, was popularly known as T.Prakasam who lived most of his working life as a lawyer and patriot in his modest residence in T.Nagarin Madras city. He was one of the very few politicians who were returned unopposed during the General Elections in the 1940s, which isa rare event in the political history of this country. He won the elections without anybody opposing him when Congress party swept the polls in 1947. He had some unusual achievements which many are not aware of today. He was perhaps the only political leader who held the office of the Chief Minister of the composite Madras province and later of the Andhra Pradesh State. Besides, he was also a member of the Central Cabinet at Delhi, a signal achievement for a politician which is not remembered by many this day. Somewhat obstinate in his mental makeup, he would not easily yield way to the wishes of other people. Once he made up his mind on something, he fought tooth and nail for it without bothering about the consequences. That was T.Parakasm. As a practising barrister of the Madras High Court,he was one of the few Andhras among the of the Indian community in those days when most barristers were Britishers and a few were Tamilians. He appeared in many interesting cases which created history, one of them being the historic and sensational Ashe Murder Case. It is interesting to narrate at some length his life history from the time he was born. He was born on August 27, 1872 to Subbamma and Gopala Krishnayya in a Niyogi Telugu Brahmin familyin the village of Vinodarayunipalem (or Vinoda Rayudu Palem), 26 km from Ongole in the then Madras Presidency (now in Prakasam District, Andhra Pradesh). When he was 11 his father died and his mother had to run a boarding house at Ongole, a business that was looked down upon at the time. When E. Hanumantha Rao Naidu, his teacher at school, moved to Rajahmundry, he took Prakasam along with him as that place had better opportunities for his education. In the school he acted in ‘Gayopakhyanam’ a famed play by the noted Telugu writer, playwright and cult figure Chilakamarti Lakshmi Narasimham in 1890 along with his teacher. He was interested in becoming a lawyer since childhood, but failed in his matriculation examination. However, he managed to go to Madras and become a second-grade pleader in the subordinate courts. Returning to Rajahmundry, he eventually became a successful lawyer there. He was elected as Municipal Chairman of Rajahmundry in 1904 when he was only 31 years old. This election was a tough one at that point in time. During one of his professional visits to Madras on a court case, a British barrister was impressed with his legal acumen and suggested that he become a barrister. As a second-grade pleader, Prakasam could not argue cases at higher courts as only barristers were allowed to do so. Prakasam took the idea to his heart and decided to go to England to pursue his legal studies. It was considered a sacrilege to cross the seas during those days. However, as Mahatma Gandhi had done before him, Prakasam made a promise to his mother that he would abstain from eating non-vegetarian food, smoking and drinking. He reached England in 1904. In England, he joined the Royal India Society and worked for the election of Dadhabhai Nawroji to the British House of Commons. November 8 - 14, 2014 RPF seize 145 kg red sandalwood Patel, one of the prominent leaders of the Indian Independence movement, ensured the integration of all states in 1950. He was considered as the ‘Iron Man of India’. Temporary foot over-bridge installed near Central Station By Our Staff Reporter About 145 kilograms of red sandalwood was seized by personnel of Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Central Railway Station on the night of Oct. 31. According to RPF, the parcels were booked under the category of electronic items by a person bearing the name Ravi. When they grew suspicious of the size and weight of the consignment, they opened it and later on verified that it was red sandalwood. Forest department officials assisted them in confirming the veracity of the consignment. Red sandalwood is used to make idols in the northeast states. It is also used as traditional medicine in China. Further investigations are on.
