Never could we have guessed that the 23rd World Scout Jamboree would become such a big news in Sweden just a few days after we arrived at the airport after a month of traveling in Japan. Indeed, the news about the possibility of meningococcal infection among swedish scouts spread like wildfire in Swedish media. Though, this is just an aftereffect of a Jamboree where over 35 000 scouts from more than 150 countries participated. For 10 days, a new city consisting only of scouts was build in the middle of Kirara Memorial Park. The theme for this Jamboree was “WA A Spirit of Unity”. Scouts were exchanging friendship, knowledge and a lot of other important things. Sweden was one of the biggest countries participating. Almost 2000 swedes was in Japan to attend the World Scout Jamboree. The World Scout Jamboree takes place every fourth year, which makes it only possible to participate once in a lifetime, due to the age limit 1417 years old. If you are above the age limit you are only allowed to go as a unit leader or as a member of the International Service Team, who are helping out at the Jamboree. There are always thousands of scouts who gathers in a chosen country. In 2011, Sweden was chosen as hosts and 40 000 people came together in Kristianstad. The official start of the Jamboree in Japan was the 28th of July. On the opening ceremony there was a lot of different performances, renewal of the scout law and the flag handover ceremony where Sweden’s representatives gave over the World Scout Flag to Japan, to show, that the Jamboree is now under their care. One of the official representatives of Sweden was Julianna Holmberg, student at IES in Linkoping. There were also activities each day for participants to enjoy and to learn from. Some were Onsite modules when participants stayed on the Jamboree site. Modules onsite could be Science, Culture, Global Development Village or Water, and at each module (except for water) different countries held the activities and let the participants walk around and choose where they would like to stay. There was a big variety of stations, everything from programming a robot or learning about umami at the science module to enjoying a tea ceremony or dancing at the culture module. “Amongst all the Onsite modules, Global Development Village was best by far. The others felt like they were not very well planned, and there was a lack of activities which led to a lot of waiting.” The Offsite modules were a bit different. When going Offsite, Units had to be at the busstations at least 20 minutes before the bus departed. The program could consist of everything from going to Hiroshima to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which was something that all scouts on the Jamboree did, or to visit a local school in a city close by. All scouts did all modules, but due to the great amount of scouts participating on the Jamboree, some modules, such as Community were split and scouts did different things. What was very important was for all participants to care for themselves by drinking a lot of water and staying away from the Sun as much as possible, since the temperature could reach 0

C some days. But this did not keep scouts from moving around. From early in the morning to late at night, scouts could be found taking photos, trading badges or standing in line for the Scout Shop where it could take more than an hour to come in, if you were coming in the wrong time. Though, on a Jamboree, this is an excellent opportunity to chat with others and make new friends. Getting to know more people are important, and getting to know new people with the same interest are the best thing. In the end of May we went to an education in Stockholm, and now we’re Young Spokespersons of the World Scout Jamboree. We’re 7 Young Spokespersons in Sweden and each and every one of us got a special mission to do at the Jamboree. Anna Lundberg, student at IES Johanneberg (Gothenburg) represented Sweden as a country at the memorial ceremony in Hiroshima the 6th of August. It’s 70 years since the atomic bombing, and still innocent people are suffering. As one of 200 she got the honor to give the Children’s Peace Monument 1000 cranes to support the worldpeace. In the end of 6th of August, more than 100 000 cranes were given to the Peace Monument by people hoping for a friendly world. Jamboree is a life changing experience, in fact, we are much more confident with ourselves and braver than before. This summer, we saw the world with our own eyes, we made new friends all over the world and we experienced the japanese culture, all in one month with the best leaders on Earth. Aldrig någonsin trodde vi att 23:e Världscoutjamboreet skulle bli en sån stor händelse i de svenska medierna bara några dagar efter att vi hade kommit hem till flygplatsen efter en månads resa i Japan.

På plats i Japan var det knappt 2000 svenskar. Ett Jamboree inträffar vart fjärde år, och det gör att man som deltagare endast kan vara med på ett Jamboree. Åldrarna som deltagare är 1417 år. Om man är äldre än deltagargränsen men ändå åker bli man en del av International Service Team som tar hand om aktiviteter, och hjälper till med allt tänkbart. Man kan även ansöka om att få bli avdelningsledare. Det är alltid tusentals av scouter som deltar på ett Jamboree i ett utvalt land. Sverige var utvalda värdar till Jamboree 2011 då 40000 scouter kom tillsammans i Kristianstad. Den officiella starten för Japans Jamboree var den 28:e Juli. På öppningsceremonin uppträdde det massor utav olika japanska artister, scoutlagen sades och det var en flaggöverlämningsceremoni där Sveriges representanter gav Världs Scout flaggan till Japan för att visa att Jamboree vaar i deras ansvar nu. En av Sveriges representanter var Julianna Holmberg, elev på IES Linköping. För alla deltagare fanns det aktiviteter att göra varje dag. Några var på plats på lägret och andra utanför lägerområdet. Moduler på plats kunde vara Kultur, Globalt, vatten eller vetenskap. Det fanns massa stationer som man fick gå till, varje land hade var sin station. Om vi ska välja vilken “på plats aktivitet” som var bäst väljer vi nog Global. De andra kändes inte jättevälplanerade, eller så var det för lång kö. Det var stor skillnad när man åkte iväg till en aktivitet. 20 minuter innan bussens avgång skulle man stå vid en stor parkering och checka ut. Aktiviteterna kunde vara att besöka Hiroshima, Hiroshimas freds museum, som alla scouter på Jamboree besökte, eller åka till en skola i en by nära lägerområdet. Ibland blev vi indelade i mindre grupper, så alla har inte gjort samma saker. På dagarna kunde temperaturen komma upp i 40 grader så det var väldigt viktigt att dricka massa vatten och skydda sig mot solen. Men inte ens värmen kunde stoppas oss scouter från att röra oss på lägret för att träffa nya kompisar. Från tidig morgon till sen kväll kunde man se scouter ta foton, byta märken eller stå i kö till scoutshopen som det kunde ta mer än en timma att komma in i om man kom på fel tidspunkt. Ett Jamboree är det absolut bästa sättet att snacka med nya människor och skaffa vänner. Att lära känna nya människor är viktigt, och att lära känna nya människor med samma intresse är det bästa som finns. I slutet av maj gick vi en utbildning i Stockholm så nu är vi Unga Talespersoner för Scouterna och speciellt för Jamboree. Vi är 7 stycken Unga Talesperoner i Sverige och var och en av oss fick ett specialuppdrag att genomföra i Japan. Som en av 200 fick hon äran att ge Barnens Freds Monument 1000 papperstranor för att hedra världsfreden. I slutet av den dagen hade mer än 100000 papperstranor skänkts till Barnens Freds Monument av människor som hoppas på en bättre värld. Jamboree är en livsförändrande resa, ja faktiskt så är vi tryggare med oss själva. Denna sommaren har gjort så vi har fått se världen med egna ögon, vi har nya vänner från hela jorden och vi har upplevt den japanska kulturen, allt under en månad tillsammans med de bästa ledarna som finns.
