Basal and Squamous Cell Cancer
Pathology for Mohs Surgeons
Overview
Objectives
Basal and Squamous Cell Cancer Pathology
is a one day course developed for physicians
who are already performing or beginning to
perform Mohs surgery, and wish to expand
their knowledge of skin cancer pathology.
After participating in this activity, physicians
should be able to:
This course will cover the most common
entities treated by Mohs surgery: basal cell
and squamous cell carcinoma. Instruction
will incorporate microscope slide study sets
and didactic lectures by Board-certified
dermatopathologists.
■
This “pure pathology” course will emphasize
differentiation between basal and squamous
cell and other anatomic structures, common
mimickers of these two cancers, and reactive
changes frequently seen at the site of
recent biopsies.
Participants may wish to enroll in the
Fundamentals of Mohs Surgery slide review
session for an opportunity to apply new
pathology knowledge to actual Mohs cases. (If
attending the full FMS physician course, the
Mohs slide review laboratory activity is included
in this global registration fee.)
See detailed schedule online at
www.mohssurgery.org.
■
■
Have increased familiarity with all the
different presentations of basal cell and
squamous cell carcinoma under the
microscope.
Identify other non-BCC and SCC tumor
structures that may be present in Mohsexcised tissue.
Demonstrate improved accuracy in the
histopathologic interpretations of BCC and
SCC skin cancer in surgical cases.
AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR MOHS SURGERY
Fundamentals of Mohs Surgery
Overview
This course has been developed for
dermatologists and dermatology Residents who
desire additional instruction in the basics of
Mohs surgery. Physicians will gain important
knowledge in all aspects of the procedure,
including practice in the interpretation of Mohs
histopathology. In addition, the program offers
practical information concerning Mohs office
and laboratory setup and instrumentation,
patient scheduling, insurance billing, and
CLIA-OSHA considerations. A popular feature
of the course is the Mohs “pearls” discussion,
practical tips and pointers presented by a team
of veteran Mohs surgeons.
Concurrent training for Mohs technicians also
is available. Beginners will receive detailed
instruction in Mohs tissue preparation and
processing, and become familiar with important
regulatory and safety standards for the Mohs
lab. More experienced technicians will spend
additional time on troubleshooting techniques
and quality assurance issues. Lab faculty
members are selected from high-volume Mohs
clinics around the country, and share both
their experience and unique dedication to
teaching Mohs lab techniques.
The primary aim of the Fundamentals of Mohs
Surgery course is enhancing patient care in
the treatment of skin cancer. While the course
constitutes a comprehensive overview of the
Mohs procedure, course completion alone
does not imply competency or certification of
any type. The highest level of Mohs competency
is achieved through a combination of rigorous
surgical and skin histopathology training in
dermatology Residency, post-Residency
fellowships or preceptorship opportunities,
regular participation in Mohs-related CME
activities, and/or direct sharing of skills and
knowledge by other experienced Mohs surgeons
and pathologists.
See detailed Physician and Mohs Technician
schedules at www.mohssurgery.org.
Objectives
After participation in this activity, physicians
should be able to:
■ Recognize the appropriate indications for
Mohs surgery based on histologic subtype
and anatomic location.
■ Demonstrate enhanced technical skill and/
or precision in the execution of the Mohs
technique.
■ Describe important Mohs practice efficiencies,
including the use of specialized
instrumentation and the management of
patient flow and tissue specimen transfer.
■ Identify Mohs mapping techniques to
ensure proper orientation and correlate
histologic findings to the surgical wound.
■ Explain the successful integration of surgical
excision and histopathologic interpretation
in Mohs surgery.
Accreditation Statement
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements
and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint

credit in the form of Contact Hours, provided by the National Society for Histotechnology (NSH).
About the American Society for Mohs Surgery
The ASMS is a professional medical education society with over 1100 active physician and Mohs
technician members. Physician membership is comprised primarily of Board certified M.D. and
D.O. dermatologists who share a strong interest, training background and practical experience in
the Mohs surgical technique. Due to the high incidence of skin cancer and the efficacy of Mohs
surgery in treating certain basal and squamous cell carcinomas, the ASMS advocates high-quality
Mohs training for all surgically-oriented dermatologists, both in Residency training and beyond.
In addition to the current fall courses outlined in this brochure, each Memorial Day weekend the
ASMS sponsors a cutting edge clinical symposium, Dermatologic Surgery: Focus on Skin Cancer.
New and expanded topics are introduced regularly to coincide with members’ ongoing educational
needs. This meeting includes an overview of the latest clinical research in dermatology and skin
cancer, as well as discussion of topics such as melanoma treatment, medico-legal concerns for
dermatologists, and other current controversies in the practice of dermatologic surgery.
Also scheduled in May is the ASMS Closure Course, which focuses on Mohs reconstruction
techniques and considerations such as defect size, anatomic location, and important patient
characteristics. This course includes a hands-on laboratory session, in which participants apply
and practice new reconstruction approaches on high-fidelity visco elastic models, under
the supervision of experienced Mohs surgeon faculty.
The ASMS offers a Peer Review case submission program to foster ongoing quality assurance in
Mohs surgery. Another popular activity is our Clinical Observational Preceptorship program, which
pairs newer Mohs surgeons with highly-experienced surgical mentors. In addition, members have
access to a variety of ASMS patient education resources for use in their practices. A quarterly
newsletter, The Beveled Edge, contains highly detailed recaps of ASMS educational activities and
other items of interest to practicing Mohs surgeons.
