I believe that the next five years will see some of the greatest change in
the history of education. New affordable technologies will change the
way that content and instruction is delivered to students.
In the past, education has been dominated by a model with a keeper of
knowledge leading the classroom from the front of the room. Since
there is such a vast storehouse of knowledge available to students at
their fingertips this model is changing. We are still trying to catch up to
the change, and we have not entirely embraced it yet.
So what does this mean for the traditional classroom? The keeper of knowledge in the front of
the room will need to adapt to the new paradigm where the learner may have more current and up
to date information and may be able to retrieve information that they do not possess. I do not believe that this makes the teacher obsolete; to the contrary I think it makes them more valuable in
guiding the student learner in the process. Teaching the student how to retrieve, adapt, analyze
and apply the information they learn. Teaching discernment is also a role for the teacher. A lot
of information that is available is not helpful and can lead the student away from their intended
outcome. Knowledge is good, but we also want the students to develop wisdom in using the
information they learn.
There are many opportunities out there to learn with the use of new technologies. Some students are able to learn by reading something online and can engage and stay motivated with an
online text, while others students are not able to stay engaged with this type of limited format.
A blended instruction tends to meet the needs of many students. One nice thing about some of
the new technologies is that they allow for a lot of flexibility in how and when a student engages
with the content and instruction.
Webberville High School has started a new journey this year with the implementation of a one
to one program. Each high school student has been given an I-Pad to use for school work. The
opportunity was made available through the Whole School Technology Transformation Grant
from the Michigan Department of Education that provided 14 schools (5000 students) with a one
to one pilot opportunity.
We have begun the implementation of our new one to one program and it will take us a year or
more to get all of our current goals implemented with our I-Pad roll out. We are learning how
to manage the I-Pads in the classroom so that they are an enrichment and not a disruption. Our
goal is that we gain additional hours of instruction and time engaged with the content, and not
lose educational time to gaming and unstructured surfing.
We recognize that in Webberville we are just beginning to learn how to use this new tool and
to better engage students in the learning process. This pilot will continue to challenge what we
know as educators and will require us to consider how we have taught in the past, and how we
must change to be effective in the future.

Are your children safe while online? Michigan families, especially minors, are becoming inundated with
advertisements from alcohol, tobacco, pornography
and gambling marketers through different internet and
cell phone inboxes. Texting their advertisements is the
newest marketing effort that many of these companies
are using. Thankfully, the State of Michigan offers a
free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching e-mails, mobile phones (text messaging ads) and
instant messenger IDs. The Michigan Child Protection
Registry, like the federal Do Not Call List, is a free donot-contact service for Michigan’s families and schools
and can be located at www.ProtectMIChild.com.
As a strong supporter of this registry, we would like to
encourage you to sign up your entire family for the registry and inform your friends and colleagues about how
they can protect children and families from unwanted
adult advertising.
Sign up only takes seconds. Just go to
www.ProtectMIChild.com and keep your family
safe.
District Notification of Asbestos and Pesticide Use
Asbestos Notification: In compliance with EPA requirements, the Webberville Community Schools will
go on record as notifying all parents that asbestos-containing materials do exist in both the high school and

encapsulate these materials.
Pesticide Notification: In compliance with PA
131 of 1993, the Webberville Community Schools
will go on record as notifying all parents that
pesticides will be used in the elementary and the
secondary buildings on non-school days or after hours.

Jacqueline La Rosa-- Spanish Teacher
Ashley Justice - College Advisor
I am a 2011 graduate of
Michigan State University,
where I majored in Spanish and minored in TESOL
( teaching English to speakers of other languages). At
the end of my college career,
I studied abroad for three
months in Valencia, Spain.
After graduation, I completed my student teaching here
in Webberville, and loved it. I took a long term sub position in February of last year and accepted the full time
Spanish position for this school year.
Hello, my name is Ashley
Justice and I’m the College
Adviser for Webberville
High School. I am here
from the Michigan State
University College Advising Corps, where I am a
recent alum. My job as the
College Adviser is to help
students get to college, and
I do this through meeting
with students one-on-one,
classroom presentations, workshops, and parent
meetings.
I am very excited to see what this year brings with all of
our talented staff and awesome students!
Right now, we are focusing on filling out college applications and I have challenged the Senior Class to
fill out 100 applications. If seniors meet this challenge, Moo Hoos has agreed to provide ice cream.
Also, I have challenged the Seniors to fill out three
or more applications. They will be competing with
Waverly, Sexton, Eastern, and Holt High Schools to
have the highest percentage of students with three or
more applications.
Kellie Schultz - Second Grade Teacher
I am a recent graduate of
Baker College where I graduated Magna Cum Laude.
I received my degree in
Elementary Education with
a minor in Social Studies. At
Baker, I was the President
of the T.A.L.L (Teachers As
Lifelong Learners) Club.
I completed my student
teaching at Webberville in
first grade under Maureen Monroe. I was also a regular
substitute teacher in the building. My family consists of
my lovely six year old daughter Lily and my husband
Bob. My daughter also attends Webberville Elementary
in the first grade. We are enjoying every minute of the
Webberville Community!
To help provide Seniors with some extra support,
on November 7, during their Senior English Class, I
will be helping students fill out applications. Several
colleges offer free applications during the week of
November 3-7. In addition, I will be helping students
to begin getting their pin number for their FAFSA applications and also begin filling out scholarships.
Please feel free to contact me, I am at Webberville
on most Mondays. The best way to contact me is
through my email at ajustice@webbervilleschools.

Math Intervention Program in the Middle School
Recently, students in Middle School Math classes
have seen a change. Department Chair Travis
Brown has been involved
with interventions in both
Mrs. Krumrei’s and Mrs.
Estep’s rooms.
Selected students in Mrs. Krumrei’s classes have received small group (4-6 students) intervention during
the first 20-25 minutes of class which entails some/all
of the following on a daily basis: pre-teaching the lesson taught explicitly by Mrs. Krumrei later in the period, practice test taking strategies, reviewing homework
and/or practicing for Unit Quizzes/Tests.
Furthermore, in the last 20-25 minutes of Mrs. Estep’s
classes, Mr. Brown has been giving support to students
within the classroom setting by way of ensuring their
“exit tickets” are complete, homework for the evening
is started, and/or pressing questions related to the class/
homework are answered.
From time-to-time, individual students will be pulled
from the classroom to receive intervention in a one-onone scenario to help improve their mathematical ability
and confidence. The extra interventions will lead our
students to greater success and confidence in their math
abilities.

Webberville FFA Member, Hayley Wagner To Take
The Stage at National FFA Convention
When the lights are dimmed and hush
descends upon an audience of more
than 60,000 at the nation’s largest annual student convention this Oct. 29
through November 1, 2014, in Louisville, Kentucky, Hayley Wagner will
be in the spotlight in a musical performance that will inspire the crowd and
provide memories to last a lifetime.
Wagner of the Webberville FFA Chapter has been selected to play in the National FFA Band. She
submitted audition tapes and was among just 80 young students selected nationwide to be a member of the prestigious
group.
“This is an honor for our chapter, community and members.
It is wonderful that Hayley took the challenge and initiative
to compete and earn a spot, said FFA Adviser Colleen Scott
Keiser. “We are excited that Webberville students continue
to contend with their peers at the State and at the National
levels.”
The band will perform several times at the 87th National
FFA Convention, adding excitement and motivation to the
sessions through their music. National FFA Band members
were chosen from nationwide a pool of applications. The
young musicians arrive in Louisville three days before convention begins to rehearse.

50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The National
FFA Organization changed to its present name in 1988 in
recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and
agricultural education. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their
potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career
success through agricultural education.
