The Spartan Vision To be a premier school system that will set the new standard of excellence A publication of Webberville Community Schools November -December 2014 What Will Teaching and Learning Look Like in Five Years? New affordable technologies will change the way that content and instruction is delivered to students. In the past, education has been dominated by a model with a keeper of knowledge leading the classroom from the front of the room. Since there is such a vast storehouse of knowledge available to students at their fingertips this model is changing. We are still trying to catch up to the change, and we have not entirely embraced it yet. So what does this mean for the traditional classroom? The keeper of knowledge in the front of the room will need to adapt to the new paradigm where the learner may have more current and up to date information and may be able to retrieve information that they do not possess. I do not believe that this makes the teacher obsolete; to the contrary I think it makes them more valuable in guiding the student learner in the process. Teaching the student how to retrieve, adapt, analyze and apply the information they learn. Teaching discernment is also a role for the teacher. A lot of information that is available is not helpful and can lead the student away from their intended outcome. Knowledge is good, but we also want the students to develop wisdom in using the information they learn. There are many opportunities out there to learn with the use of new technologies. Some students are able to learn by reading something online and can engage and stay motivated with an online text, while others students are not able to stay engaged with this type of limited format. A blended instruction tends to meet the needs of many students. One nice thing about some of the new technologies is that they allow for a lot of flexibility in how and when a student engages with the content and instruction. Webberville High School has started a new journey this year with the implementation of a one to one program. Each high school student has been given an I-Pad to use for school work. The opportunity was made available through the Whole School Technology Transformation Grant from the Michigan Department of Education that provided 14 schools (5000 students) with a one to one pilot opportunity. We have begun the implementation of our new one to one program and it will take us a year or more to get all of our current goals implemented with our I-Pad roll out. We are learning how to manage the I-Pads in the classroom so that they are an enrichment and not a disruption. Our goal is that we gain additional hours of instruction and time engaged with the content, and not lose educational time to gaming and unstructured surfing. We recognize that in Webberville we are just beginning to learn how to use this new tool and to better engage students in the learning process. This pilot will continue to challenge what we know as educators and will require us to consider how we have taught in the past, and how we must change to be effective in the future. 2 District Calendar Proud of our past, promoting our future N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 1 2 3 6:00PM WES Boosters Mtg 4 Election Day 5 6 6:00PM Varsity VB district finals @ Morrice 7 8 9:00AM K-6 Basketball Skills Camp 14 15 7:00PM Choir Concert 6th-12th 9 10 4:30PM MS VB vs Bentley 11 Veterans Day JV & Varsity Girls BKB practice start 6:30PM WJAA Mtg 16 12 4:30PM MS VB vs Dryden 6:30PM Athletic Boosters Mtg NHS Food Drive - Bring in donations! 17 Boys BKB practice starts 18 4:30PM MS Wrestling @ Goodrich 19 3:00PM Jr. Garden Club 20 21 22 ICHD Hearing 2:15PM Elementary Screenings Award Assembly 4:30PM MS VB vs Genesee 6:30PM Fall Sports Recognition Night 4:30PM MS VB @ Beecher 4:30PM MS Wrestling vs Byron, NL, 4:30PM MS VB vs Perry and Montrose Hamady 7:00PM Board Mtg 23 24 4:30PM MS VB @ Morrice 6:30PM Family Movie Night 25 4:30PM MS VB vs Montrose 4:30PM MS Wrestling @ Durand 30 13 26 NO SCHOOL 27 NO SCHOOL Happy Thanksgiving! 28 NO SCHOOL 29 District Calendar 3 www.webbervilleschools.org DECEMBER 2014 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday 1 2 3 4 4:30PM MS VB @ 4:30PM MS Wres- 4:30PM MS VB @ NHS Blood Drive Atherton tling at Byron Bendle 6:00PM WES Booster Mtg 7 6:00PM Girls Varsi- 7:00PM MS/HS ty BKB vs Burr Oak Band Concert (no JV game) 8 9 4:30PM MS VB vs 4:30PM MS WresMorrice tling @ Lake Fenton 6:30PM WJAA Mtg 5:30PM Girls JV & BKB vs Genesee 10 4:30PM MS VB @ Genesee 5:00PM Varsity Wrestling @ Corunna Saturday 5 6 Secondary Progress Reports Calculated 4:30PM MS Wrestling @ Goodrich 11 12 13 4:30PM MS Wres- 5:30PM Boys JV 8:00AM ACT tling @ Goodrich BKB @ LCHS 9:00AM Varsity 7:00PM Choir 5:30PM Girls JV Cheer @ HoughConcert 6th - 12th BKB @ Hamady ton Lake Meet 7:00PM Boys Var- 9:00AM Varsity sity BKB @ LCHS Wrestling @ Onstead 7:00PM Girls Varsity BKB @ Hamady 7:00PM Girls Varsi- 6:30 Athletic ty BKB vs Genesee Boosters Mtg 14 Friday 15 16 17 18 19 20 4:30PM MS VB @ 5:30PM Boys JV 3:00PM Jr. Garden 5:30PM Girls JV 5:30PM Girls Var- 9:00AM Varsity Montrose BKB @ Atherton Club Mtg BKB @ Dryden sity BKB vs Dryden Wrestling @ Maple Valley 5:30PM Boys JV 5:30PM Girls JV 5:00PM Varsity 7:00PM Boys JV 7:00PM Boys VarBKB @ Burr Oak BKB vs Atherton Wrestling vs Quad BKB @ Dryden sity BKB vs Dryden 6:00PM Girls JV 7:00PM Boys Varsi- 6:00PM Varsity BKB @ Ashley ty BKB @ Atherton Cheer @ Goodrich 7:00PM Board Mtg 7:00PM Girls Varsity BKB vs Atherton 7:00PM Boys Varsity BKB @ Burr Oak Governors Traveling Art Show in the Spartan Center 7:00PM Girls Varsity BKB @ Ashley 21 22 CHRISTMAS BREAK 23 24 CHRISTMAS BREAK 25 CHRISTMAS BREAK 26 CHRISTMAS BREAK 27 CHRISTMAS BREAK Merry Christmas! 28 29 CHRISTMAS BREAK 30 CHRISTMAS BREAK 1 2 CHRISTMAS BREAK 3 CHRISTMAS BREAK 4 CHRISTMAS BREAK 4 District News Proud of our past, promoting our future BREAKFAST SERVED DAILY AT SCHOOL Students have the opportunity to eat breakfast every day at school. Are your children safe while online? Michigan families, especially minors, are becoming inundated with advertisements from alcohol, tobacco, pornography and gambling marketers through different internet and cell phone inboxes. Texting their advertisements is the newest marketing effort that many of these companies are using. Thankfully, the State of Michigan offers a free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching e-mails, mobile phones (text messaging ads) and instant messenger IDs. The Michigan Child Protection Registry, like the federal Do Not Call List, is a free donot-contact service for Michigan’s families and schools and can be located at www.ProtectMIChild.com. As a strong supporter of this registry, we would like to encourage you to sign up your entire family for the registry and inform your friends and colleagues about how they can protect children and families from unwanted adult advertising. Sign up only takes seconds. Just go to www.ProtectMIChild.com and keep your family safe.
