On Thursday, October 30, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as
The Creature and Jonny Lee Miller plays The Doctor. The
roles will be reversed for the screening on November 2.
National Theatre Live’s smash-hit broadcast of Danny
Boyle’s Frankenstein, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and
Jonny Lee Miller in alternating roles as The Doctor and
The Creature, returns to cinemas as part of the National
Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebration!
This stunning adaptation of Mary Shelly’s classic horror
tale Frankenstein enjoyed a sell-out run at the National Theatre
in 2011, and went on to win awards including the 2012 Olivier
Award for Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee
Miller. Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle (Trainspotting,
Slumdog Millionaire) directs a sensational production with
Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness, BBC’s Sherlock)
and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, CBS’s Elementary)
alternating roles as Victor Frankenstein and his creation.
Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s
bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his
horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes,
the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful,
determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying
deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental
neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and
evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing
classic gothic tale. (Running time: approximately 135 mins. with no
intermission, Not Rated/Contains mild violence and partial nudity)
Digital
The world looks to Portland, Oregon as an example of how
bicycle culture can blossom out of the ruinous freeways of caroriented civilization. Aftermass is the first feature documentary
to explore the events, people, politics, and social changes that
led to Portland becoming the first major bicycle city in the
United States. Aftermass features many of the leaders and major
participants behind the growth of bicycling ridership since 1971.
The narrative demonstrates the complex dynamic throughout
the 1990s between advocacy organizations, politicians, city
planners, and the then new, grassroots Critical Mass ride. The
film is full of smiling faces on two wheels, but also explores the
controversies, setbacks, and bumps along the way, including
riots, political roadblocks, and an illegal police spy. The film
provides new and vital insights into Portland’s transportation
history as well as into paths other cities can follow to healthy
planning and a green future. (Dir. by Joe Biel, 2014, USA, 75
mins., Not Rated)

“Electrifying. Gillian Anderson is unmissable.” –

Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece A Streetcar Named
Desire comes to the screen in a captured-live broadcast live
from their London home, presented by National Theatre Live.
With Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) as Blanche DuBois, Ben

turns to her sister Stella for solace – but her downward spiral

Kowalski. Visionary director Benedict Andrews returns to the

ELSA & FRED
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5 AT 7:00PM
geNerAl ADmiSSioN: $12 • lofT memberS: $10
Please Note: We cannot accept passes or Groupons for this screening.
See the new romantic comedy Elsa & Fred before its
national theatrical release at this special New York Film
Critics Series preview screening, featuring a captured-live
post-film discussion with the film’s Oscar-winning star
Shirley MacLaine, moderated by Rolling Stone film critic
Peter Travers! The New York Film Critics Series, broadcast
to 50 selected major markets, takes place exclusively in
cinemas and is never available on TV or online.
Oscar-winners Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer star in this
remake of the 2008 Spanish/Argentinian hit of the same name, playing
late-in-life lovers who see the world anew through each other. Elsa
(MacLaine) is a feisty widow with a thing for Fellini, and a tendency to
stretch the truth a few extra notches. Fred (Plummer) is a dyed-in-thewool curmudgeon, seemingly content to grumble at anything within the
proximity of his spacious New Orleans apartment. When a housewaresrelated mishap brings these next-door neighbors together, the sparks
that fly are far from the love-at-first-sight variety. As the two come
into increased contact with each other’s considerable quirks, however,
some exhilarating new possibilities begin to enter the picture, and Elsa’s
fantasy of re-creating the iconic Fontana di Trevi scene from Fellini’s La
Dolce Vita just might become a reality. Bolstered by an exceptional
supporting cast (including Marcia Gay Harden, Scott Bakula, George
Segal, and Chris Noth), MacLaine and Plummer generate a unique
chemistry that’s a wonder to behold. Viewers with a fondness for La
Dolce Vita may wish to have a few extra tissues handy. (Dir. by Michael
Radford, 2014, USA, 104 mins., Rated PG-13)
The New York Film Critics Series is the first-ever live national premiere
screening series. It is dedicated to producing inspiring events in a
collaborative environment and to nurturing the long-term success
of better, smarter movies. Each NYFCS screening brings prestigious,
live New York City screenings of soon-to-be-released films to the best
independent cinemas in America. These screening events are moderated
by Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers, and include a preview screening
of a new film prior to its national release, interviews with talent from
the film and special behind the scenes content. These screenings are
scheduled to take place once a month and will happen approximately 12
times per year. Recent NYFCS premieres and live chats with directors/
stars have included such films as Gone Girl, Chef, Nebraska and American
Hustle.

A free monthly series showcasing great new and
classic family-friendly films from around the world!
Presented by Trail Dust Town!
On the first Friday of each month at 9:00pm, Red Meat’s Max
Cannon hosts the biggest, baddest short film contest in town –
just bring us your short films and we’ll play them on the largest
movie screen in Southern Arizona!
In case you’ve never been to a First Friday Shorts show, here are
the rules: We’ll play anything you’ve made that’s under 15 minutes
long and is brought to us on a DVD, thumb drive or BLU-ray (one
film per person, and DVDs must be playable on a regular DVD
player and films on drives need to be in by 8:00pm). Submissions
are only taken on the day of the event, and all entries MUST
BE RECEIVED PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACTUAL SHOW
(we cannot accept films after the show has begun, or during
intermission). All films are played in the order they’re received.
Every film is guaranteed to play for 3 minutes, but after that the
audience can call for the dreaded “gong” if they’re displeased. If
the gong is struck, our intrepid host stops the film and the next
movie begins. But don’t despair … if your film is gonged, you can
re-work it and bring it back to see if the changes you’ve made
have pleased the audience. This is a great way for filmmakers
to try out new ideas and see how an actual audience responds,
so take advantage. You cannot submit the same film more than
once unless it has been re-worked. Remember, the audience
decides the winner each and every month, so keep them happy!
PLEASE NOTE: We only take the first 15 films that are brought in each
month and the spots have been filling up really fast. We start taking
submissions as soon as we open the day of the show so get your films
in early!
PLEASE BE ADVISED: Since we don’t pre-screen First Friday Shorts
entries, we don’t know what each month’s “film content” rating will be.
Be advised that some material may not be suitable for all audiences.
Congratulations to Dom Villarrubia and Gilbert Rateazyk
for winning the October contest with their short film, The
Mouseketeer!
Pre-show activities hosted by Mildred & Dildred

activities with FC Tucson!
“The world’s most popular sport has never looked
as acrobatic or as inventive as it does in Shaolin
Soccer, a delightful blend of comedy, kung fu,
soccer and special effects.” – Carla Meyer, San
Francisco Chronicle
Filled with tons of action, eye-popping special effects and
nonstop laughs, Shaolin Soccer is a hilarious martial arts comedy
about a team of misfits who take their best shot at winning a
soccer championship! Sing (Stephen Chow, one of Hong Kong’s
top screen comics) is a modern-day Shaolin monk and kung fu
devotee who is renowned for his “leg of steel.” Unfortunately,
these days there isn’t much call for a Shaolin warrior, so Sing
and his fellow monks earn their keep working menial jobs until
a soccer coach gets the bright idea of translating Sing’s talent for
kicking to the soccer field. Soon, Sing becomes the star player on
a team made up of his former Shaolin brothers, and together they
work to win a big money prize in a national soccer competition.
Using an unlikely mix of martial arts and newfound soccer skills,
it seems an unbeatable combination … until they must face the
dreaded Team Evil in the ultimate battle for the title! (Dir. by
Stephen Chow, 2004, Hong Kong, dubbed in English, 87 mins., Rated
PG-13)

“Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales isn’t just a movie.
It’s an apocalyptic piñata that’s been bazookaed open… it feels like a nightmare pumped with
laughing gas.” – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe
Director Richard Kelly’s controversial follow-up to his teen angst/
sci-fi classic Donnie Darko is a wild apocalyptic extravaganza
bursting with offbeat action, scathing social satire and even
the occasional over-the-top musical number! Set in a futuristic
Los Angeles, which stands on the brink of social, economic and
environmental disaster, Southland Tales tells an epic story of
terrorism and time travel set over the course of three days that
culminate in a massive 4th of July celebration. Boxer Santaros
(Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) is an action movie star stricken
with amnesia. Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is an adult
film star developing her own reality television show (when not
working with Boxer, her lover and writing partner, on an unusual
screenplay called “The Power,” which tells the story of the end of
the world). Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott) is a Hermosa
Beach police officer (with an allegedly evil twin!) who holds the
key to a vast conspiracy that just might trigger the End of Days.
From its truly strange supporting cast (including Wallace Shawn,
Zelda Rubinstein, Christopher Lambert, Bai Ling, Miranda
Richardson and such Saturday Night Live alumni as Jon Lovitz
and Amy Poehler) to a show-stopping musical number featuring
Justin Timberlake lip-synching to The Killers while vinyl-clad
women cavort, Busby Berkley-style, around him in a pinball
arcade to a legitimately WTF? finale which somehow manages
to incorporate a floating ice cream truck, modern dance and the
resurrection of Christ, Southland Tales is a truly unforgettable
(not to mention, unclassifiable) movie experience. (Dir. by
Richard Kelly, 2006, USA, 144 mins., Rated R)

Alive Inside is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to
reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity.
Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing
experiences of individuals around the country who have been
revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. His
camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and
how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls
short. This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen,
founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights
against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to
combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering
from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the
miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers
illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist
and best-selling author Oliver Sacks and musician Bobby McFerrin. An
uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind, Alive Inside was

Oil and Water tells the true story of two boys coming of age as
they each confront one of the world’s worst toxic disasters. Hugo
and David were born on opposite ends of the oil pipeline. Hugo
comes to the United States to fight for the survival of his Cofán
tribe in the Ecuadorian Amazon, while David goes to Ecuador
to launch the world’s first company to certify oil as “fair trade.”
Their journeys lead them to explore what could be a more just

born with oil beneath their feet. (Dir. by Francine Strickwerda &
Lauren Spellman Smith, USA/Ecuador, 77 mins., Not Rated)
From director Jennifer DeLia and producer Julie Pacino comes a fascinating
and absorbing portrait of a troubled artist, Billy Bates, walking the tight rope
between brilliance and madness. Billy seeks solace in his beautiful lover, Kaia, an
angelic singer he meets at an art show. As the two together attempt to navigate
his mind-bending reality, the film becomes a cacophony of voices, music, and
memories that take us through Billy’s kaleidoscopic world of underground parties,
a psychotic break, and on the rise as an artist. All throughout this journey, Billy
creates his newest body of work and is coined ‘the Warhol of his generation.’ Billy
Bates stars James Wirt and Savannah Welch and features Margherita Missoni,
Josephine de La Baume, Zoe Twitt, and Sally Golan. Music by Moby’s band The
Little Death, the Trishas, the late Arthur Russell, and more. Original artwork by

ABOUT THE TRAIL RUNNING FILM FEST:
Those of you who have run a Rainshadow race know that we’re all
about community and celebrating the greater community of traillovers. We bring the same laid-back enthusiasm and trail-loving
camaraderie to showcasing trail running films of all shapes, sizes,
and varieties as we do to our dynamic and beloved Northwest
trail race series. And, like our races, we also feature local beer and
good friends. There are a lot of talented filmmakers in this closeknit and extended trail community, and we wanted to create a
way to showcase everything we love so much about trail running
while simultaneously highlighting local, regional, national, and
international filmmakers. Thus, The Trail Running Film Fest was
born. We had an extremely successful debut tour throughout the
Northwest in March of 2014, and we’re back again – this time
to bring you a nation-wide tour kicking off in the fall of 2014.
We hope you’ll join us for an unforgettable evening of trail films,
good beer, and great friends!
ABOUT RAINSHADOW RUNNING:
Rainshadow Running has been offering destination trail races in
the Northwest since 2008. We believe no matter where you’re
traveling from, you’ll be glad you did. We showcase world-class
courses on stunning trails that highlight the best this region has
to offer. Every course is unique, beautiful, and tough, and all our
races feature a dynamic and organic post-race party, with great

PART OF OUR ESSENTIAL CINEMA SERIES
See classic art films the way they were meant to be

“The film is wonderful and funny and full of real
emotion.” – Vincent Canby, New York Times
New German Cinema pioneer Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire,
The American Friend) brings his keen eye for landscape to the
American Southwest in Paris, Texas, a profoundly moving
character study written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright
Sam Shepard. This unique road movie, winner of the Palme d’Or
at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival, follows the mysterious, nearly
mute drifter Travis (Harry Dean Stanton) as he unexpectedly
emerges from the desert after being missing for years, and
tries to reconnect with both his young son, who is living with
his brother (Dean Stockwell) in Los Angeles, and his runaway
wife (Nastassja Kinski), who had abandoned the family years
earlier. From this simple setup, Wenders and Shepard produce a
powerful statement on codes of masculinity and the myth of the
American family, as well as a stunning visual exploration (lensed
by frequent Jarmusch cinematographer Robbie Muller) of a vast,
crumbling world of canyons and neon. Driven by an evocative
slide-guitar score by Ry Cooder, Paris, Texas is a haunting and
poetic slice of cinematic Americana. (Dir. by Wim Wenders, 1984,
USA, 145 mins., Rated R)

“Smart, fun and thoroughly enjoyable, it’s

Turan, Los Angeles Times
Can Rise of the Planet of the Apes tell us anything about our
current world? Veteran UA Humanities Seminars instructor
Richard Poss will help us see how a 2011 science-fiction movie
can illuminate our lives and concerns, in commentary before the
screening. In this blockbuster prequel to the original 1968 Planet
of the Apes, Will Rodman (James Franco), a scientist at Gen-Sys,
is trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s, a disease which is slowly
pulling his father (John Lithgow) away from him. When a baby
chimp at the lab is orphaned, he takes him home and raises him,
but this single act of both compassion and arrogance leads to a
war unlike any other — and to the Rise of the Planet of the Apes!
(Dir. by Rupert Wyatt, 2011, USA, 105 mins., Rated PG-13)
Richard Poss has an academic background in comparative
literature and currently serves as Associate Professor in
Astronomy at the University of Arizona. As such, he brings
dynamic, multifaceted perspectives to even the most popular
cultural products of the day — such as the Planet of the Apes
flicks. He promises to respect the thriller excitement of this
perfect “Saturday afternoon movie” but also to probe into the
compelling ethics and moral quandaries of this film. He’ll also
talk about technology and literature, and acting and sequels
— more than enough to look at the Planet series with more
critical and understanding eyes. So, come share and afternoon of
popcorn, entertainment, and illumination with a talented guide.

“A magnificent documentary! The band are
fascinating, the music is amazing and, at the
center of it all, the people of Sheffield make the
city positively glow.” - David James, We Got This
Covered
Florian Habricht’s witty, innovative documentary follows the
legendary band Pulp (perhaps the smartest and most charismatic
in all of BritPop) as they prepare to say farewell after 25 years of
performances. Though culminating with the farewell concert the
band played to thousands of adoring fans in their hometown of
Sheffield, England, Pulp is by no means a traditional concert film
or rock doc. As much a testament to the city and inhabitants
of Sheffield as it is to the band, Pulp weaves exclusive concert
footage with man-on-the-street interviews and dreamy staged
sequences to paint a picture much larger, funnier, more moving
and more life-affirming than any music film of recent memory.

behind some of the key objects that document Bowie’s artistic
career. The exhibition curators, Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey
Marsh, provide fascinating insight into the most memorable
music videos and original costumes, as well as more personal
items such as never-before-seen handwritten lyrics, album
cover artwork, set designs and diary entries, which reveal the
creativity and evolution of Bowie’s ideas. The documentary was

“A beautiful and profound new film.” – Tracy L.
Barnett, Huffington Post
This new documentary tells the urgent story of the mystical
Wixarika People, the Huicholes, one of the last pre-Hispanic
cultures in Latin America. Their struggle against the Mexican
government and multi-national mining corporations to
preserve Wirikuta, their most sacred territory and home of the
famous peyote cactus, forms the basis for the film. The mining
activities of the Canadian companies that received concessions
in 2010 to prospect this protected area, rich in silver, gold and
other minerals, are seen by the Wixarika and their supporters
as a great threat to the delicate biodiversity of this unique
ecosystem, listed by the UNESCO as World Cultural and Natural
Heritage. A controversial battle between the Huichioles and
the transnational mining corporations triggers a global debate
about ancient cultural values, the exploitation of nature and the
inevitable development of the peoples. The Wixárika people,
native to the Sierra Madre, have since time immemorial made
their pilgrimages to this sacred land; now they find themselves
at the forefront of a spiritual crusade to protect their way of life.

PART OF OUR ART ON SCREEN SERIES
Enjoy the performing arts on the big screen, with thrilling opera,
ballet and theatre productions from around the world, captured
live and presented in beautiful high definition!
Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan star in the highly anticipated
West End production of David Hare’s Skylight, directed by
Stephen Daldry, captured live in London’s West End by
National Theatre Live.
Based on filmmaker Darious Britt’s own life experiences, this
story of love challenged and a relationship torn and mended
portrays an epic battle of wills between mother and son.
Regi (played by writer / director Darious Britt), a filmmaker
embarking on his dream project, must battle his mother’s
condition, the healthcare system, and his worst fears to get
her the help that she needs and reclaim his life. As played by
Toreenee Wolf in a fearlessly charismatic performance, mom
Darolyn is an ultra-clever schemer capable of bamboozling
medical staff and authorities with her charm, only to turn on her
son in destructive wrath. University of Arizona graduate Darious
Britt has made an astonishing and powerful debut feature film,
with the simmering intensity of memory to back it up. It’s also
a subtle critique of the Kafkaesque nightmare of mental health
bureaucracy. (Dir. by Darious Britt, 2013, USA, 94 mins., Not

On a bitterly cold London evening, schoolteacher Kyra Hollis
(Carey Mulligan) receives an unexpected visit from her former
lover, Tom Sergeant (Bill Nighy), a successful and charismatic
restaurateur whose wife has recently died. As the evening
progresses, the two attempt to rekindle their once passionate
relationship only to find themselves locked in a dangerous battle
of opposing ideologies and mutual desires.
Bill Nighy, whose extensive film credits include Love
Actually, Notes on a Scandal and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and
whose stage roles include Pravda and the world premiere of David
Hare’s The Vertical Hour on Broadway, plays alongside Carey
Mulligan (Inside Llewyn Davis, The Great Gatsby, An Education)
who is making her West End stage debut, and Matthew Beard
(An Education, One Day, The Look of Love).
Skylight is directed by Academy Award-nominated director
Stephen Daldry, who recently directed the sell-out West End
production of The Audience with Helen Mirren, which was also
broadcast to cinemas by National Theatre Live. David Hare is
the author of 29 plays for stage, including Plenty, Racing Demon
and Amy’s View. His many screenplays include The Hours and The
Reader. Skylight was originally produced at the National Theatre
in 1995, before transferring to the West End and Broadway,
and won an Olivier Award for Best Play. (Running time: 165

Warren Miller’s 2014 film, No Turning Back, pays homage to the
65 years of mountain culture and adventure filmmaking that has
lead WME to every end of the winter world. We’re taking a legacy
that dates back to before skis had edges and mountains had
condos and we’re running with it to the steepest peaks around
the globe and back to the Mom and Pop hills that define skiing
and riding.
Since he began creating films in 1949, Warren Miller has known
that as skiers and riders, there’s no need to look back, we have
to continuously drive to keep our edge and chase the snow.
This year, we prove that not much has changed when it comes
to why it is these athletes tilt and turn down mountains and
pray for storms. Sheer delight. Welcome this winter season and
remember there’s No Turning Back.

Close your eyes and the films of
Paul Thomas Anderson will come
back to you with a visceral force:
the ill-fated visit to the drug dealer’s house
in Boogie Nights… the ocean of oil cascading from
the derrick in There Will Be Blood… the startling
amphibian downpour in Magnolia… these are just
a few of the most indelible passages in modern
movies. Undoubtedly influenced by masters such
as Welles, Kubrick and Altman, Anderson has also
demonstrated a distinct, risk-taking style unique
to his own body of work. His earliest features
like Hard Eight and Boogie Nights exhibit his talent
for immersing viewers in meticulously-observed
subcultures that serve as backdrops to explore
profound, universal themes. This signature
quality is expertly developed in more recent films
like There Will Be Blood and The Master, where
issues such as power, greed, capitalism and cult
lurk in the background of ambitiously sweeping
narratives. While grand in scope, Anderson’s films
are at their core driven by dynamic, endlessly
intricate (and often damaged) characters and their
personal journeys amid complex webs of human
relationships – thanks in no small part to frequent
collaborations with some of contemporary cinema’s
finest actors (perhaps most notably the late, great
Philip Seymour Hoffman). Expansively epic and
intimately personal, universally meaningful and
obsessively particular – Anderson’s work is a
collection of unique contradictions that firmly
cements his status as a true American auteur.
BOOGIE NIGHTS • THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6 AT 7:00PM
Paul Thomas Anderson’s sprawling, exhilarating, crazy-quilt love letter to late ‘70s excess is an epic
story tracking the meteoric rise of a super-stud porn star through the golden age of the adult film
industry. Both intimate and epic in tone, Boogie Nights is an electrifying homage to the art and chaos
of making movies, a tribute to the families we create and a clear-eyed look at America’s slide from the
innocent hedonism of the 1970s into the darker realities of the 1980s. (Dir. by Paul Thomas Anderson,
1997, USA, 155 mins., Rated R) 35mm Print!
HARD EIGHT • THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13 AT 7:00PM
Paul Thomas Anderson’s thrilling debut feature is a zig-zagging, modern-day film noir set in the neonlit world of professional gambling. Featuring stellar performances by its finely-tuned cast (which also
includes Samuel L. Jackson), Hard Eight is a gripping look at lives on the fringe, and an early, genreinflected exploration of the themes of fate and family that would later occur throughout Paul Thomas
Anderson’s body of work. (Dir. by Paul Thomas Anderson, 1996, USA, 102 mins., Rated R) 35mm Print!
MAGNOLIA • SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15 AT 7:00PM
Paul Thomas Anderson’s extravagant comedy/drama is a wildly audacious, multi-character study set
during one action-packed day in the San Fernando Valley. With Magnolia, the young writer/director
followed the bright colors and disco madness of Boogie Nights with a strikingly original, ambitious and
moving mosaic of American life woven through a series of comic and poignant vignettes centered on a
group of seemingly unconnected characters in Southern California. (Dir. by Paul Thomas Anderson, 1999,
USA, 188 mins., Rated R) 35mm Print!
PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE • THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20 AT 7:00PM
With Punch-Drunk Love, Paul Thomas Anderson delivers a delightfully odd and bracingly original
concoction – a manic depressive romantic comedy with the soaring soul of a movie musical. The
unconventional casting of Adam Sandler in the lead role was a surprising move for Anderson, but
the gamble paid off as the director manages to perfectly channel Sandler’s barely-suppressed anger
in surprisingly effective ways. Anderson also won the Best Director Award at the 2002 Cannes Film
Festival for his highly inventive, aesthetically gorgeous portrait of innocent love contrasted against a
world of corruption. (Dir. by Paul Thomas Anderson, 2002, USA, 95 mins., Rated R) 35mm Print!
THERE WILL BE BLOOD • SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22 AT 7:00PM
Daniel Day-Lewis stars in Paul Thomas Anderson’s multi-Oscar nominated historical drama, a visually
stunning and enthralling exploration of American greed, capitalism and violence. A dark and soaring
drama, There Will Be Blood is a sometimes shocking, always thrilling piece of cinema that both employs
and ingeniously transcends the conventions of epic cinema. Featuring a gorgeous, anachronistic
soundtrack by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, a raft of memorable moments (“I drink your milkshake!”)
and stunning cinematography, the film is a mesmerizing character study of power and corruption in the
grand tradition of Citizen Kane. (Dir. by Paul Thomas Anderson, 2007, USA, 158 mins., Rated R)
THE MASTER • THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29 AT 7:00PM
An ambitious and inventive tale of individualism set against the epic backdrop of post-World War II
America, The Master paints a striking portrait of drifters and seekers on the rocky road to enlightenment.
Set to haunting original music by Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood, and constructed with impeccable
period detail, Paul Thomas Anderson’s stunning exploration of religion, power and the dark recesses of
the American Character features astonishing performances from Phoenix, Hoffman and Amy Adams.

“An inspirational true story … with humor, heart

One Chance is the remarkable and inspirational true story of Paul
Potts, a shy, bullied shop assistant by day and an amateur opera
singer by night. Paul became an instant YouTube phenomenon
after being chosen by Simon Cowell for ‘Britain’s Got Talent.’
Wowing audiences worldwide with his phenomenal voice, Paul
went on to win the popular TV talent show and the hearts of
millions with his stunning rendition of Puccini’s “Nessun
Dorma.” Since then, Potts has performed for Queen Elizabeth
II, released a multiplatinum album, and written a memoir. But
Potts’ seemingly overnight success was a hard won victory,
as One Chance winningly illuminates with heart, humor and
“against all odds” enthusiasm. Fresh from his Tony Awardwinning Broadway run in One Man, Two Guvnors, James Corden
(The History Boys) stars as Potts, and is supported by an acclaimed
ensemble cast that includes Julie Walters (Billy Elliot), Colm
Meaney (Get Him to the Greek), Jemima Rooper (Kinky Boots).

Awake: The Life of Yogananda is an inspiring, unconventional
biography about legendary East Indian mystic Paramahansa
Yogananda, the man credited with introducing yoga and
meditation to the West in the conservative 1920’s. His spiritual
classic “Autobiography of a Yogi,” has sold more than four
million copies in 34 languages and become the go-to book for
modern seekers, scholars, and yoga enthusiasts, including
George Harrison, Russell Simmons and Steve Jobs (it was the
only book he had on his iPad). By personalizing his own quest
for enlightenment and sharing his struggles along the path,
Yogananda made ancient teachings accessible to a modern
audience, attracting countless followers and paving the way for
the millions who practice yoga today. Filmed over three years
with the participation of 30 countries, the film takes us from
holy pilgrimages in India to Harvard’s Divinity School and its
cutting-edge physics labs, and from the Center for Science and
Spirituality at the University of Pennsylvania to the Chopra
Center in Carlsbad, California. A compelling story of one man’s
journey that impacted the world, Awake is ultimately the story
of humankind itself: the universal struggle of all beings to free
themselves from suffering and to seek lasting happiness. (Dir. by

If the worst day of your life consisted of accidentally killing
your girlfriend with an axe, chain-sawing your own arm off,
and watching in horror as your closest friends were devoured
by a zombified Nazi battalion, you’d have to assume that things
couldn’t get much worse. In Martin’s case, that was only the
beginning. Picking up immediately where the original left
off, Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead wastes no time getting right to
the gore-filled action, leaving a bloody trail of intestines in its
wake. After his horrific experiences in the first film, Martin
(Vegar Hoel) wakes up in a hospital bed with a new arm - but it’s
a super-powered Zombie arm that wants to kill him, and anyone
else it can reach. Martin’s PISSED. And with the help of his new
Zombie Squad pals (Martin Starr, Jocelyn DeBoer, Ingrid Haas),
he’s going to deliver some payback to the evil Colonel Herzog and
his precious Nazi gold - by raising an undead army of his own.
Director Tommy Wirkola returns to the helm with a vengeance,
coming up with more inventive ways to maim and dismember
than you ever thought possible. Combining wry humor with
horrific worst-case scenarios, this follow-up to the 2009 classic
original is sure to shock the weak-of-heart and delight even the
most hard-core fans of the horror genre. (Dir. by Tommy Wirkola,

Pump is an inspiring, eye-opening documentary that tells the
story of America’s addiction to oil, from its corporate conspiracy
beginnings to its current monopoly today, and explains clearly
and simply how we can end it - and finally win choice at the
pump. Today oil is our only option of transportation fuel at the
pump. Our exclusive use of it has drained our wallets, increased
air pollution and sent our sons and daughters to war in faraway
lands. Pump shows us how through the use of a variety of
replacement fuels, we will be able to fill up our cars - cheaper,
cleaner and American made - and in the process, create more
jobs for a stronger, healthier economy. The film features notable
experts such as John Hofmeister, former President of Shell Oil
US; Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors; Peter Goldmark, former
president of the Rockefeller Foundation; and other noteworthy
figures who share their passionate views and knowledge. Right
now we have the ability to change our country’s future, but we
never knew it. Aren’t we tired of being taken for a ride? Pump is
the movie that could change that. (Dir. by Joshua Tickell & Rebecca

It’s happening again. This time with a whole new line-up of

ABCs of Death 2 is the follow-up to one of the most ambitiously

spanning from Nigeria to UK to Brazil and everywhere in
between. It features segments directed by over two dozen of the
world’s leading talents in contemporary genre film. Inspired by
children’s educational books, the motion picture is comprised of

assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given
free reign in choosing a word to create a story involving death.
Provocative, shocking, funny and at times confrontational, ABCs

Award-winning documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy (Ghosts

people desperately attempt to escape. On the ground, American
soldiers and diplomats confronted a moral quandary: whether
to obey White House orders to evacuate only U.S. citizens or
risk being charged with treason and save the lives of as many
South Vietnamese citizens as they could. With time running out
and the city under fire, an unlikely group of heroes emerged as
Americans and South Vietnamese took matters into their own

Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award
for Breakthrough Talent, Dear White People is a sly, provocative
and often laugh-out-loud funny satire of race relations in the age
of Obama. At prestigious Winchester University, biracial student
Samantha White begins her radio show, “Dear White People,
the amount of black friends required not to seem racist has
just been raised to two. Sorry, your weed man, Tyrone, doesn’t
count.” Sam becomes president of the all-black residential hall
Parker/Armstrong, whose existence is facing extinction in the
name of diversification. TV reality show Black Face/White Place
smells gold in Sam’s story and decides to follow it, rejecting the
proposal of fellow black student Coco Conners, who pitched
her show Doing Time at an Ivy League. The clamor over Sam’s
rise also becomes a career-defining opportunity for black misfit
Lionel Higgins when he is asked to join the school’s all-white
newspaper staff to cover the controversy, even though he secretly
knows little about black culture. With tongue planted firmly in
cheek, writer/director Justin Simien makes an auspicious debut
with Dear White People, a witty and whip-smart examination of
black militancy, post-racial fantasies and the commodification of
blackness. Nothing is black and white in this playful portrait of
race in contemporary America. (Dir. by Justin Simien, 2014, USA,

Based on the novel by Joe Hill, and directed by genre ace Alexandre
Aja (Haute Tension, The Hills Have Eyes), Horns is a darkly comic
supernatural thriller driven by fantasy, mystery and romance.
The film follows Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe), the number one
suspect for the violent rape and murder of his girlfriend, Merrin
(Juno Temple). Hungover from a night of hard drinking, Ig
awakens one morning to find horns sprouting from his own head
and he soon realizes their power drives people to confess their
sins and give in to their most selfish and unspeakable impulses
- an effective tool in his quest to discover the true circumstances
surrounding his late girlfriend’s tragedy and for exacting
horrifying revenge on her killer. Wickedly blending laughs and

A modern-day Grapes of Wrath, the award-winning documentary
The Overnighters is an intimate portrait of job-seekers desperately
chasing the broken American Dream to the tiny oil boom town
of Williston, North Dakota. Tens of thousands of unemployed
hopefuls show up with dreams of honest work and a big paycheck
but step into the stark reality of slim prospects and nowhere to
sleep. The town lacks the infrastructure to house the overflow of
migrants, even for those who do find gainful employment. Over
at Concordia Lutheran Church, Pastor Jay Reinke is driven to
deliver the migrants some dignity. Night after night, he converts
his church into a makeshift dorm and counseling center, opening
the church’s doors to allow the “Overnighters” (as he calls them)
to stay for a night, a week or longer. They sleep on the floor, in
the pews and in their cars in the church parking lot. His wellmeaning project immediately runs into resistance with his
community, forcing the clergyman to make a decision which
leads to profound consequences that he never imagined. (Dir. by
Jesse Moss, 2014, USA, 102 mins., Rated PG-13)
In January 2013, filmmaker Laura Poitras was in the process of
constructing a film about abuses of national security in post9/11 America when she started receiving encrypted e-mails
from someone identifying himself as “citizen four,” who was
ready to blow the whistle on the massive covert surveillance
programs run by the NSA and other intelligence agencies. In
June 2013, she and reporter Glenn Greenwald flew to Hong
Kong for the first of many meetings with the man who turned
out to be Edward Snowden. She brought her camera with her.
The film that resulted from this series of tense encounters is
absolutely sui generis in the history of cinema: a 100% real-life
thriller unfolding minute by minute before our eyes. Poitras
is a masterful storyteller: she compresses the many days of
questioning, waiting, confirming, watching the world’s reaction
and agonizing over the next move, into both a great character
study of Snowden and a narrative that will leave you on the edge
of your seat as it inexorably moves toward its conclusion. (Dir. by
Laura Poitras, 2014, USA, 114 mins., Rated R)

“A howlingly funny black comedy with really
sharp teeth.” – Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, A.V. Club
“Writer-director Alex Ross Perry has made a
bracing and very Philip Roth-y study of ambition
and itchy literary yearning.” – Michael Phillips,
Chicago Tribune
A multi-generational story of love and marriage, Love Is
Strange depicts the delicate nature of two people trying to build a
long life together, and the possibility for love to grow deeper and
richer with time. After 39 years together, Ben (John Lithgow)
and George (Alfred Molina) take advantage of the new marriage
laws and tie the knot in a City Hall wedding in lower Manhattan.
On the return from their honeymoon, however, and on account
of their vows, Ben gets fired from his longtime job as a choir
director for a co-ed Catholic school. Suddenly, with no real
savings to count on, the couple finds that they can’t afford the
rent on their small Chelsea apartment. Only days after they have
gathered to celebrate the nuptials, this tight-knit community of
family and friends now has to come together again to help figure
out how to help their two friends. Also starring Marisa Tomei,
Love Is Strange is a heart-rending tribute to friends, family and
above all, love. Fom director Ira Sachs (Keep the Lights On, Forty
Shades of Blue). (Dir. by Ira Sachs, 2014, USA, 94 mins.,Rated R)
Anger rages in Philip (Jason Schwartzman) as he awaits the
publication of his sure-to-succeed second novel. He feels pushed
out of his adopted home city by the constant crowds and noise,
a deteriorating relationship with his photographer girlfriend
Ashley (Elisabeth Moss), and his indifference to promoting his
own work. When Philip’s idol Ike Zimmerman (Jonathan Pryce)
offers his isolated summer home as a refuge, he finally gets the
peace and quiet to focus on his favorite subject — himself. A
complex, intimate, and highly idiosyncratic comedy, Listen Up
Philip is a literary look at the triumph of reality over the human
spirit. (Dir. by Alex Ross Perry, 2014, USA, 108 mins., Not Rated)

“It’s a blast! A short, sharp shock of a film that
barrels through three highly imaginative short
stories and a wraparound with gleeful abandon.”
- Geek League of America
V/H/S: Viral is the third installment of the twisted found footage
horror anthology franchise. This latest chapter expands the
universe and continues a streak of terror, violence and a wicked
sense of humor set forth by the previous films. V/H/S: Viral
brings together contemporary genre directors Nacho Vigalando
(Timecrimes), Marcel Sarmiento (Dead Girl), Gregg Bishop (Dance
of the Dead) and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Resolution).
A police chase after a deranged ice cream truck has captivated
the attention of the greater Los Angeles area. Dozens of fameobsessed teens flock to the streets with their video cameras and
camera phones, hell-bent on capturing the next viral video. But
there is something far more sinister occurring in the streets of
L.A. than a simple police chase. A resounding effect is created
onto all those obsessed with capturing salacious footage for no
other purpose than to amuse or titillate. Soon the discovery
becomes that they themselves are the stars of the next video,
one where they face their own death. As the terrifying videos
unfold - from a highly-peculiar magician to a garage scientist’s
bizarre discovery to a rowdy bunch of skateboarders who mess
with the wrong local legend with expectedly bloody results
- the horror goes viral in ways no one could anticipate. (Various
directors, 2014, USA, 97 mins., Rated R)

“GRADE A-. The rare kind of moviegoing
experience that will haunt you long after
you leave the theatre.” – Chris Nashawaty,
Entertainment Weekly
A critical hit at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it was
awarded the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard, this wickedly
funny and precisely observed psychodrama offers a daringly
provocative look at morality and marital relations. Force Majeure
tells the story of handsome Swedish businessman Tomas, his
willowy wife Ebba and their two blond children as they enjoy
a skiing holiday in the French Alps. The sun is shining and the
slopes are spectacular but, during a lunch at a mountainside
restaurant, an avalanche suddenly bears down on the happy
diners. With people fleeing in all directions and his wife and
children in a state of panic, Tomas makes a shockingly impulsive
– and perhaps unforgivable - decision that will shake his
marriage to its core and leave him struggling to reclaim his role
as family patriarch. Replete with bravura sequences — from the
frighteningly realistic avalanche scene to an incredibly extended
crying jag that teeters between the harrowing and the hilarious
— Force Majeure is an unsettling and darkly comic psychological
thriller from director Ruben Östlund (Play) that is guaranteed
to have audiences talking. (Dir. by Ruben Östlund, 2014, Sweden/

“Like The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, Irving’s
study of brown pelicans is affectionate, at times
humorous and reveals a sense of wonder and awe
at the birds’ simple beauty.”— Carolyn Jones,
San Francisco Chronicle
In a true story of friendship, survival and the spirit of flight,
filmmaker Judy Irving (director of the smash hit The Wild
Parrots of Telegraph Hill) follows a wayward, starving California
brown pelican from her “arrest” on the Golden Gate Bridge into
care at a wildlife rehabilitation facility, and from there explores
pelicans’ nesting grounds, Pacific coast migration and survival
challenges. The film is about wildness: How close can we get to
a wild animal without taming or harming it? Why do we need
wildness in our lives, and how can we protect it? A moving,
humorous and affectionate look at our complicated relationship
with nature, Pelican Dreams stars “Gigi” (for Golden Gate) and
Morro (a backyard pelican with an injured wing). (Dir. by Judy
Irving, 2014, USA, 80 mins., Rated G)
“Do you want to die?!” seven-year-old Samuel asks his stressedout single mother, Amelia. She wonders if his question is a threat
or a warning. After dealing with Samuel’s frantic tantrums his
entire life, Amelia suspects that her son has begun directing
his violent misbehavior toward her. However, after a dark and
foreboding children’s book called Mister Babadook mysteriously
appears on Samuel’s bookshelf, Amelia must decide if her son is
truly deranged, or if there really is a bogeyman lurking in their
darkened halls at night.
First-time feature director Jennifer Kent vividly captures the
vicious turbulence of Samuel’s shrill outbursts, generating
a real sense of horror from his aggressive unruliness, all the
while subtly hinting at the weary Amelia’s own deeply troubled
nature. The Babadook builds up tension and dread in this
damaged family’s home before deftly introducing the terrifying
possibility that something even more ominous may be stalking
the dysfunctional pair. (Dir. by Jennifer Kent, 2014, Australia, in
English, 93 min., Not Rated)

BRAINSMASHER: A
LOVE STORY
EVIL LAUGH
KILLING
AMERICAN STYLE
ATTACK OF THE
CRAB MONSTERS
NINJA III: THE
DOMINATION
Exactly how much awfulness can
one movie sustain? Find out when
Amir Shervan, the highly “unique”
director of Samurai Cop, unleashes
a tidal wave of crap in which a gang
of escaped convicts hold an innocent
family hostage and a peaceful man
is forced to start killing… American
style! Throw in gratuitous bikinis,
weird acting and surreal The Roomlevel awfulness, and the word
“absurd” just won’t do this justice.
“From the depths of the sea… a
tidal wave of terror!”
“He’s the ultimate killer. She’s
the perfect weapon.”
When giant mutant telepathic crabs
get their claws in a tizzy while trying
to take over the world, it’s going to be
a seafood buffet of terror for a group
of befuddled scientists whose only
hope for saving humanity is to find a
VERY large vat of melted butter and
about a million plastic bibs.
It’s the age old story: sexy aerobics
instructor becomes possessed by the
spirit of an evil ninja who uses her
body to seek revenge on the cops who
killed him, her lunk-head boyfriend
just doesn’t understand and a good
one-eyed ninja is called in to perform
an exorcism. Hijinks ensue. WHAT?
See it and be forever changed.
(Dir. by Albert Puyn, 1993, USA, 88
mins., Rated PG-13)

killer ninjas. Save the world. No

“Ten years ago, something
terrible happened in this house…
this weekend it’s about to happen

For all those who think Andrew
Dice Clay can’t convincingly play
a sensitive nightclub bouncer who
comes to the aid of a sexy supermodel
being chased by a passel of deadly,
kung fu-fighting Shaolin monks,
well… you’re probably right, but here
it is anyway, so just deal with it!
When a group of brain-dead medical
students attempt to reopen an
abandoned orphanage (what fun!),
the stage is set for a weekend of
alleged evil involving a murderous
maniac with a nervous giggle, death
by microwave oven and Scott Baio’s
much-less-famous brother, Steven!
Oh, the inhumanity.
“What we have here is a very deep
movie about punching… easily the
second best bouncer movie ever

SPIRITED AWAY
PAN’S LABYRINTH
When the roundhouse kicks and
spinning punches get to be too
much for young Daniel Laruso (the
eternally youthful Ralph Macchio),
he turns to handyman/peaceful
mean machine Mr. Miyagi (Pat
Morita) for help. Boasting one of the
most iconic training montages ever
filmed, some serious nose-honking
and a totally legendary example of
the crane style, The Karate Kid is a
true ‘80s classic.
Who killed Mr. Boddy, and
in what room with what
weapon? In this cult-tastic spoof
of McCarthy-era paranoia and
1950s wholesomeness, the crazed
characters and crackerjack plot are
drawn from the popular Parker
Brothers board game of the same
name.
A crazed, slapshot assault on
television
and
pretty
much
everything else, UHF is perhaps the
perfect cinematic vehicle for the
spoof-ilicious sensibilities of wild
man Weird Al, who takes uproarious
swipes at everyone from Ghandi to
Rambo, while bringing a spazztacular
assortment of ‘80s/’90s comedy
luminaries along for the ride. Don’t
touch that dial!
