Endowed Scholarships
Luis H. Ball ’49 Endowed Scholarship: Established with a gift from the estate of Luis H. Ball ’49
to provide assistance to students from Venezuela and other South American countries. Luis was a
member of the Board of Trustees from 1982—1985, an admissions interviewer until 1995, and
chairman of Choate Rosemary Hall's Endowment Plus campaign in Venezuela in the early 1980s.
Bartels Family Scholarship: Created by Kenneth G. Bartels '69 and his wife Jane F. Condon in
honor of Ken's parents, Henry E. and Nancy Horton Bartels.
Cody Carter Belzley ’99 Scholarship Fund: Established to provide assistance to current students
through Students for Students, an organization on campus which helps coordinate fund raising
events in support of the student scholarship fund. Cody served as co-chair of Students for Students.
Beninati Family Endowed Scholarship: Joseph P. ’83 and Rhonda (Madoff) ’83 Beninati
established The Beninati Family Endowed Scholarship in to provide financial aid for talented
students with a demonstrated financial need as identified by the Admission Office, in
particular, post-graduate students of noteworthy character and leadership ability with a
preference for applicants with recommendations from clergy and/or individuals who have
captained one of more varsity athletic teams hailing from families requiring significant financial
assistance in order to send their children to the School. An additional preference would be that
the Scholarship be awarded to students whose parents did not attend college.
Naomi A. and G. Gordon Biggar Memorial Scholarship: G. Gordon Biggar, Jr. ’56 established
this scholarship in memory of his father with these words: “Because of my parents’ love for Choate
and respect for its ideals and traditions, I am honored to establish this fund in my dad’s name.” This
scholarship is to assist students that come from middle-income families.
Charles M. Brennan III ’60 Endowed Scholarship: Established by Charles "Chip" Brennan, a
former member of the Board of Trustees.
Ann Bronfman ’50 Scholarship: Established by former Trustee, Ann Loeb Bronfman ’50 to
provide financial assistance to a “promising young woman” in an effort to perpetuate the legacy of
Rosemary Hall. In creating this Scholarship, Ann Bronfman reaffirmed the school's belief that the
future of Choate Rosemary Hall must be built upon the strengths and traditions of the past as well as
the enthusiasm and promise of the present.
Lawrence Newbold Brown ’70 Memorial Scholarship: Established in his memory to provide
financial assistance to a student from Hawaii or to a student who is musically inclined. Lawrence
was fluent in the Hawaiian language and spent many years promoting Hawaiian music as well as
rediscovering Hawaiian performers of many decades past.
Campione Family Scholarship: Established by Dr. and Mrs. Matthew P. Campione, P’75, ’78 in
an effort to support students of Italian descent.
Ronald Chao ’91 Memorial Scholarship: After his untimely death in 2010, the family of
Ronald Chao ’91 established this scholarship in his memory to provide financial assistance to
scholar-athletes of Asian descent.
Celeste and Owen Cheatham Scholarship for the Arts: Established by former Trustee, Ms. Celeste
S. Cheatham, P’83, ’85, ’87, in honor of her late parents, Owen and Celeste Cheatham, to provide
financial assistance to students gifted in the arts.
Chicago Area Scholarship: First established by James R. Getz ’29 and further funded by Burton W.
Hales, Jr. ’49 and R. Peter Hunt ’54, among other Chicago, IL area alumni, the Chicago Area
Scholarship is designed to provide financial support to students whose families reside in the greater
Chicago, IL area.
C.W. Chu Scholarship: Designed to provide financial assistance to a student exemplifying good
character and academic achievement as well as demonstrating a distinct interest in the field of
science, computer science, or engineering. Dr. and Mrs. Albert E. Chu, P'94, established this
scholarship in honor of Dr. Chu's father.
Class of 1944 Memorial Scholarship: Established by the Choate class of 1944 at their 25th reunion
to honor the memory of ’44 classmates who died in the years between 1944 and 1969, including
several who were killed in action in World War II. In 1989 the fund was expanded by an anonymous
Rosemary Hall alumna to commemorate the Centennial year and her 45th reunion. This scholarship
has first preference for family members of the Classes of 1944.
Class of 1946 Memorial Scholarship: Established by members of the Choate Class of 1946 at its
25th reunion to honor classmates who had died between 1946 and 1971.
Class of 1980 Scholarship: Established by the class of 1980 at their 25th reunion in an effort to
provide financial assistance to middle income families.
Class of 1981 25th Reunion Scholarship Fund: Established by members of the class of 1981 in
honor of their 25th reunion.
Class of 1985 Endowed Scholarship: Established by members of the class of 1985 in honor of
their 25th reunion.
Kathleen Nichols Coxhead Scholarship: Established by the Nichols Foundation as a tribute to
the senior member of their Board and a very special member of their family, Kathleen Nichols
Coxhead. This scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to middle income families.
Di Capua Family Scholarship: Established in 2008 by Piero and Laura Di Capua, P'11.
Thomas B. Curtis ’81 Memorial Scholarship: Established in 2010 to honor the
memory of Tom Curtis ’81 and designed to provide financial assistance first to the family
of a day student at Choate or secondly to a boarding student from Northern California.
Davidow Family Endowed Scholarship In Honor Of Juliet Yoko Davidow: Established by
Hiroko and Robert Davidow in honor of their daughter, Juliet who graduated in 2001, to provide
financial assistance to a talented student with an interest in dramatic arts.
Marten Y. de Schepper ’68 Memorial Scholarship Fund: Established in 1992 through a bequest
from Cornelia Westerman in loving memory of her grandson, Marten Y. de Schepper ’68. In
accordance with Marten’s interests, this scholarship is directed at a student with an interest in
biology. Marten attended Middlebury College where he received a B.S. degree in Biochemistry.
Dort Family Fund: Established in 1978 by Mr. and Mrs. David T. Dort, P'61, ’68 in an effort to
support Choate Rosemary Hall students from middle income families.
The Eifler Brothers Scholarship: Established by Carl M. and Elizabeth R. Eifler, P’05, ‘11, ’13.
Edward E. Ford Foundation Fund: Established to provide financial assistance to students of
color from middle income families. Edward was the son of A. Ward Ford, who founded and
developed a manufacturing business in Binghamton which ultimately became a part of International
Business Machines Corporation.
A. Mary Gilbert Endowed Scholarship: Established by A. Mary Gilbert, Rosemary Hall '57.
Glendorn Foundation Scholarship for Science: Established in by the Dorn and Miller families
through The Glendorn Foundation, a Texas charitable foundation and designed to fund two twoyear scholarships to students interested in the sciences. Preference is for recipients who reside in the
southwestern United States, particularly Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico and
Arizona.
Goergen Family Student Athlete Fund: Established by Robert B. Goergen ’89, a member
of the Choate Rosemary Hall Board of Trustees and the Goergen Family Foundation to
assist Choate Rosemary Hall in attracting students with athletic promise who might not
otherwise be able to attend due to the cost of tuition.
Robert C. Graham ’32 Memorial Scholarship: Established in 1994 by a bequest from Mr.
Graham and intended to assist Choate Rosemary Hall in attracting students display an interest in
international affairs and/or Russian Studies.
Andre N. Guevorguian ’74 Memorial Scholarship: Established in 1990 by Tatiana Guevorguian
in memory of her son, Andre, who perished of Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988 over
Lockerbie, Scotland. The scholarship is designed to provide financial aid to the families of students
making application to Choate from De La Salle Academy in New York City.
Henry and Ginger Harteveldt Scholarship: Established by former Trustee, Robert L. Harteveldt
'80 in honor of his parents.
Hayden Foundation Scholarship: Established in 1957 to assist families of boys who qualify for
financial assistance and who reside in the New York and Boston metropolitan areas.
Tommy Hilfiger Scholarship: Established in 1994 by former Trustee, Silas K. F. Chou P’93, ’96,
’02, this scholarship is to be awarded to a student who is particularly interested in design, the apparel
industry or international business.
Hodge Family Scholarship: Linda Joyce Hodge, a Rosemary Hall graduate of 1973, and
member of the Choate Rosemary Hall Board of Trustees, established this scholarship in an
effort to provide financial assistance to the families of students of African-American origin.
Holt Family Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Kevin D. Holt P'10, '11.
Marianne Crawford Howard Memorial Scholarship: Established in 1997 by Hal Bowen
Howard ’43 as a memorial of gratitude to his mother, Marianne Crawford Howard and
designed to provide financial assistance to the family of a student from the Memphis, TN
geographical area.
Richard Hunter Scholarship: Established in 1998 by Edwin Goodman ’58 who later renamed the
scholarship to honor Richard Hunter, a former member of the faculty.
William E. Ireland ’65 Memorial Scholarship: Established in 1971 by Robert L.
Ireland III and Jacqueline M. Ireland, in memory of their son. Preference is to qualified
candidates from The Boys' Club of New York or to boys who reside in New York City,
New York State, or the State of Connecticut, in that order.
Jellinek Family Scholarship: Established in celebration of his graduation by the family of Peter
Max Jellinek ’93 and designed to provide financial assistance to families of students who excel both
academically and athletically.
Brett M. '88 and Grant D. Johnson '88 Scholarship: Established by Brett Johnson ’88, a member
of the Choate Rosemary Hall Board of Trustees, and his brother Grant Johnson ’88.
Jennifer W. Johnson ’98 Memorial Scholarship: Established by Worthington Johnson ’70 and his
wife Marie, in memory of their daughter, Jennifer W. Johnson ’98.
John Joseph Memorial Scholarship: Established in 1983 to acknowledge the thirty-three year
teaching career of John Ferris Joseph and designed to provide financial assistance to families of
students who are talented writers.
Kanders Brothers Endowed Centennial Scholarship: Established by Warren ’75 and Alan ’83
Kanders and designed to provide financial assistance to families of students with an interest in
economics and the fine arts.
Carl L. Kempner ’41 Memorial Scholarship: Established in 1995 by Michael C. Kempner ’74 and
Carl L. Kempner, Jr. ’71 in memory of their father, former Trustee, Carl Loeb Kempner ’41 and
designed to provide financial assistance to families of students who attend De La Salle Academy in
New York City.
The Federico J. Klemm Scholarship: Established by an anonymous donor.
Lau Family Scholarship: Established by Mr. Thomas Luen Hung Lau and his wife, former Trustee
Linda Lau, P'07 and designed to provide financial assistance to families from mainland China.
Lee Wai Lee Scholarship: Established in 1992 by Mr. and Mrs. Henry So-Ping Kao, parents of
Geoffrey Kao ’96, in honor of Geoffrey’s grandfather. The scholarship is designed to provide
financial assistance to the families of students of Chinese origin.
Gary Leinbach ’51 Memorial Scholarship: Established in 1972 largely through the class of 1951’s
25th reunion effort, this scholarship honors “a Choate student who embodies the qualities and warm
humanity toward others that Gary Leinbach exemplified: leadership, scholarship and a keen interest
in extracurricular activities.”
Daniel Louchery ’36 Scholarship Fund: Established with a bequest from Daniel Lochery '36.
Madden Family Scholarship: Established in 1997 by the family of Michael Madden ’83. The
scholarship is designed to assist the families of students who reside in the state of California and are
interested in a post-graduate year of study.
George James Mandes Wallingford Student Scholarship: Established by George James Mandes
’76 to assist families of students applying to Choate from the town of Wallingford, CT.
Margaret F. Marshall Endowed Scholarship: Established by faculty and friends of Margaret
Marshall James on her retirement after 25 years of service to the Choate.
John S. McCormick, Jr. '31 Scholarship: Established by John S. McCormick ’31 in an effort
to attract students from the state of Vermont whose families qualify to receive financial
assistance.
McCurdy Family Scholarship Fund: Established in 1998 by former Trustee, Lisa Maddox
McCurdy ’73 and her husband, Charles ’73, this scholarship is designed to provide financial
assistance to the family of a female student.
Paul Mellon ’25 Scholarship: Established by the School with a bequest from Paul Mellon’s
estate and to honor his desire to make a Choate education accessible to students from a broad
spectrum of socio-economic, geographic, racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Richard King Mellon Scholarship for Pittsburgh-Western Pennsylvania: Established by the
Richard King Mellon Foundation and designed to provide financial support to families of students
from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and/or Western Pennsylvania.
Mark Michtom ’44 Memorial Centennial Scholarship: Established with a bequest from Mark
Fell Michtom ’44 and designed for provide financial support to families of students who are gifted in
the arts.
Mullins Family Scholarship. Established in 1998 by the parents of Michael Mullins ’00 to be
awarded with first preference to a qualified student from St. Luke's School New York City needing
financial assistance and then either a New York City student or other deserving student with financial
need.
Murphy Family Scholarship: Established in 1997 by John and Grace Murphy P’92, ’93. ’96 for
their three sons. The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to families of students
from the state of Rhode Island.
Nason Scholarship: Established by Alexander Nason ’77, P'06, '10.
Neiman Family Scholarship: Established by Cary L. Neiman '64, former Chairman of the Choate
Rosemary Hall Board of Trustees.
Charles W. Nichols, Jr. ’29 Scholarship: Established in 1973 and funded by the Nichols
Foundation, the Nichols Family Scholarship was renamed in 1995 as the Charles W. Nichols, Jr.
’29 Scholarship and is designed to provide financial assistance to middle income families.
Ortense Family Memorial Scholarship: Established with a bequest from Joseph Ortense, Jr. in
honor of Joseph Ortense, Sr., Frances Louise Gianotti and Joseph Ortense, Jr. and designed to
provide financial assistance to families of students if Italian American descent.
Orthwein Family Scholarship: Established by the Orthwein brothers, Adolphus ’61, twins Peter
and Stephen ’64, and David ’77.
Chester G. Parsons Memorial Scholarship: Established by the Parsons family to provide
financial assistance to students of color who have an interest in foreign language study.
George M. Pitkin ’50 Memorial Scholarship: Established with a bequest from George M. Pitkin
'50.
Dr. Oscar Morgan Powell, Jr. ’42 Scholarship: Established in memory of Dr. Powell
and intended to provide financial aid to a student who has indicated an interest in
science and a potential desire to study medicine. Dr. Powell received his Bachelor
degree from Swathmore and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of
Pennsylvania. He practiced nuclear medicine in California.
David Todd Pryor ’64 Memorial Endowed Centennial Scholarship: Established in 1987 to
honor the life of David Todd Pryor ’64 and to provide financial assistance to boys from, but not
limited to, Nassau County, Long Island, NY who have distinguished themselves as students, leaders
and athletes.
The Reader’s Digest Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established by grants from funds established
by DeWitt Wallace, the founder of Reader's Digest. This scholarship is designed to provide financial
assistance to middle income families. Grants given to this endowment were made from two private
foundations established by Mr. Wallace as well as the Reader’s Digest Scholarship and Leadership
Fund and the DeWitt Wallace Fund #3 at the New York Community Trust.
William C.S. Remsen ’39 Memorial Scholarship: Established by William’s family, friends and
funds given by Johnson & Johnson. The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to
scholar athletes, particularly those interested in hockey.
John Minott Rivers, Jr. ’63 Endowed Scholarship: Established in 1991 and designed to provide
financial assistance to families of talented students from North or South Carolina.
Robie Family Scholarship Fund: Established and initially funded by Richard S. Robie, Jr. ’50 and
Ann Robie, together with funding from their son, Richard S. Robie III ’78 and his wife Susan Robie
P’06, ’07, and Susan’s parents, James and Natalie Haslam.
John H. Sack ’76 Memorial Scholarship: Established in 1999 by John H. ’76 and
David L. Sack ’75. The scholarship was later renamed as a living memorial to John and is
designed to provide financial assistance to families of students from the Connecticut
shoreline.
Schwartz-Seaman Family Scholarship: Established by Alan and Nancy Schwartz P'11.
R. Christopher Schwarzenbach ’61 Memorial Scholarship: Established as a
permanent memorial to Chris Schwarzenbach ’61by Chris’ parents, Brigitte and Robert,
and designed to provide financial assistance to the family of a boy of African-American
descent.
Frank Coolidge Shattuck ’30 Memorial Scholarship: Established by Frank’s
brother, James ’34 and sister-in-law, Martha Shattuck, and designed to provide financial
assistance to middle-income families.
Ophelia B. Snyder ’10 Scholarship Fund: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Brian Snyder P'10, in honor
of their daughter. The purpose of the endowment is to provide scholarship support for middle
income students with financial need.
Margaret and Seymour St. John ’31 Scholarship: Alumni, trustees, and friends of Margaret and
Seymour St. John ’31 established this scholarship in their honor. Seymour St. John succeeded his
father as headmaster of Choate, serving from 1947 until his retirement in 1973.
Henry G. Stifel III Endowed Centennial Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Henry G.
Stifel, Jr. in honor of Henry Stifel III and designed to be awarded to a student who, like their son, has
overcome some form of handicap or adversity and, in so doing, has exhibited those same qualities as
have been exhibited by Henry III: courage, endurance, optimism, compassion and spirit.
Joanne C. and Susan M. Sullivan Scholarship Fund: Established in 1992 by members of the
Board of Trustees, this scholarship honors two sisters whose combined careers represent 54 years of
dedicated service to Rosemary Hall and Choate Rosemary Hall and designed to provide financial
assistance to two sisters who are students at the School.
Edward S. Tallmadge, Jr. ’54 Memorial Scholarship: Established by family and friends of
Edward S. Tallmadge, Jr. ’54 in his honor.
Memorial Fund in Honor of Harold L. Tinker: Established in 1997 by the family of Victor H.
Kramer ’31 to honor the distinguished 39 year teaching career of Harold L. Tinker and to provide
financial assistance to middle-income families.
Thomas R. Wall IV ’76 Scholarship: Established in 1997 and designed to provide financial
assistance to financial assistance to students of athletic ability and high scholastic aptitude. Tom’s
father, Thomas R. Wall III, is a 1950 alumnus of Choate. Three brothers and a sister are also Choate
Rosemary Hall graduates: Joshua ’77, Christopher ’80, Jonathan ’82, and Cinda ’83.
Stacey Gillis Weber ’81 and Jeffrey A. Weber Scholarship: Established by former Trustee, Stacey
Gillis Weber ’81 and her husband Jeffrey P’ 12.
Baker T. Welch ’72 Memorial Scholarship: Established in 1979 by Baker’s family and designed to
provide financial assistance to students interested in Choate Rosemary Hall’s tutoring program and
community development or to provide financial assistance to families of students from Texas or the
Southwest.
White Family Scholarship: Established by former Trustee, Mr. M. Anthony White and his wife
Clare, P'03, '06.
Carolyn Seely Wiener ’66 Scholarship: Established by former Trustee, Carolyn Seely Wiener '66.
David L. Wolfson ’88 Memorial Scholarship: Established with gifts from family and friends in
honor of David L. Wolfson ’88.
