Re lectionofToday’sGospel~John2:13-22
The first two chapters of John’s Gospel show us the very
beginning of Jesus’ ministry. After the first of Jesus’
“signs,” the turning of water into wine at the marriage
feast at Cana, John shows us Jesus fast-forwarding to
the end of his ministry and the very greatest of the signs
he will perform: his saving death on the Cross. In some
measure, his fate has already been sealed because of
the manner of this first public disclosure in Jerusalem (at
the time of the pilgrim feast of Passover, when many
Jews were there). Jesus, aghast that commerce is being done in the sacred precincts of the temple, makes
a mess of the place, upsetting the settled practice of
“money-changing,” the profitable business of supplying
worshippers with the proper coinage for the purchase
of the elements offered in the temple sacrifices, as well
as the business of the sale of those elements. This act,
which so early in his ministry will put the authorities on
notice as to the dangerous and unconventional sort of
figure that Jesus was, is connected with Jesus’ death
because it spells the beginning of the ire of those who
would move to take his life. And it serves notice on the
Jewish teachers that what they have countenanced is
unacceptable. Still more, it signals that Jesus’ whole
ministry, from beginning to end, will be about going to
the heart of things, of a deepening of the teachings of
Judaism, of an uncompromising opposition to any accommodation of the Spirit of God with the spirit of the
world. That should still be our stance today as regards
the sacred spaces where we assemble for worship as
well as our hearts, both of which are to be houses in
which our heavenly Father can be rightly worshipped.

Dear Sacred Heart Families,
During the month of October, we make an annual appeal for Stewardship. As I am asking each of you to reflect
upon the gifts received form the Lord and renew your commitment to Stewardship through your time, talents,
and treasure, I am pleased to present our Annual Report and Key Initiatives. This report highlights the commitment
and the accomplishments of our Parish and staff to serve God through the use of their gifts. This past year, Sacred
Heart Cathedral has grown through evangelization, faith formation, and service. It is our heartfelt desire to
continue to focus our efforts to worship, teach, and serve both now and into the future.
The growth of the parish is exciting as we continue to be a vibrant force for the on-going development and living
out of our faith in Christ. We are striving to reemphasize the importance of education, fellowship and hospitality,
and open communication. We want to be the face, voice, and hands of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our mission statement is as relevant today as ever: As a Catholic Parish, we are a diverse Eucharistic community
sharing the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus through evangelization, faith formation, and service. Your support is
an expression of your faith in which you feel our mission is worthy and that you are willing to make a positive
difference in the lives of others. I am humbled by your devotion and grateful to you as a member of our Parish.
Thank you for your service and prayers.
In Christ,
Fr. David

PASTOR’S SUMMARY
The year of 2013 has seen Sacred Heart Cathedral grow through evangelization, faith formation, and service.
Sacred Heart Cathedral has achieved several of its goals identified by the strategic plan. These goals represent
a part of a long term strategy that was put into place over three years ago. Those achieved were:
Faith Formation:
•
Hired Adult Faith Formation Director
•
Hired Youth Discipleship Program Coordinator
•
Established Cathedral Kids, Rush for middle school ages, and Xlt for high school ages
•
Established Café and Wednesday night programs for adults to encourage fellowship and growth in faith
•
Added Adoration Thursdays 6:00-7:00 p.m.
•
Revamped RCIA to include Symbolon to welcome newcomers
•
Developed a Ministries catalog for stewardship opportunities through time, talent, and treasure
Unity in Diversity:
•
Hosted our Lady of Guadalupe
•
Developed a Hispanic Women’s Guild
•
Active Masses for Korean and Filipino communities
FeastoftheDedicationoftheLateranBasilicainRome•• November9,2014
Facilities:
•
Convened a Master Planning Committee in February 2013 and hired BarberMcMurry Architects to complete
a comprehensive space planning and “needs analysis” study. Barber McMurry along with Ecclesiastical Consultant Duncan Stroik developed a site master plan as our road map to show how we can continue to grow
and minister to the needs of our parish community. This process helped us to construct a vision for the future.
•
Convened a Steering Committee to increase engagement and involvement regarding a potential
campaign from the Sacred Heart parish and school family. Currently, we are blessed by the gifts of many
leaders throughout our parish that are serving on our Home campaign team.
•
Held Parish Presentations to receive input and feedback from the community during Pentecost 2013, held
Parish Town Hall in August 2013 to increase awareness, held campaign announcement weekend in June
2014, followed by a campaign kickoff weekend in September 2014.
•
After the extensive review of RFPs from 6 construction firms, Merit Construction was named as the Project
Manager to assist in the design and cost analysis of the Master Plan.
•
In November 2013, a campaign planning study was launched to help determine size and scope of project
and identify key initiatives for a Diocesan campaign plan. More than 1000 Catholics across the Diocese
participated in the planning study with over 72% in favor of proceeding with a campaign.
•
Based on feedback from the study, Modifications were made as to size and scope of the Cathedral project.
James McCrery and Associates were hired to aid in the new design.
Communication:
•
Developed parish and school logo that reflects the traditional elements of the Sacred Heart
•
Weekly Parish Updates via email
•
Revised Bulletin
•
Allocated Communications Director to Sacred Heart Parish as priority
•

The growth of our Parish is exciting as we continue to be a vibrant force for the on-going development and living
out of our faith in Jesus. We strive to reemphasize the importance of open communication, faith formation, and
service as well as stewardship and servant leadership. The key initiatives from our staff at the Parish for 2014 work
to further enhance our core values. The Core Values that we adopted in 2011 are Witness, Worship, Community
and Service, Stewardship and Leadership, Education, Open Communication, and Hospitality. Each one addresses the issues that have been brought to our attention from our members as well as where we want to go to fulfill
our mission. Our mission statement is as relevant today as it was in 2011: As a Catholic parish, we are a diverse
Eucharistic community sharing the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus through evangelization, faith formation, and
service. The objectives set out by the Parish staff for the year 2014 correspond to the core values and objectives
in meeting the long term strategic plan.
To ensure that we remain focused on the goals and objectives outlined in this report, I have convened a Parish
Advisory Board to help me continue listening to the needs of our parish and to respond to the call of evangelization. This group will enhance communication, encourage open feedback from members, make decisions timely,
and improve our ability to move strategies quickly for the benefit of His Holy Church.
Finally, the vision for Sacred Heart is clear and simple. We want to be the face, voice and hands of our Lord Jesus
Christ. I would like to thank the members of our Parish, staff, and advisory board for their service and prayers. You
have my sincere gratitude.
