Duties: Nutrition and management
consulting, working directly with horse
owners and farm managers regarding both
diet and management, making
recommendations for improvement,
balancing rations to meet specific nutritional
requirements, feed and hay analysis
interpretation, on-farm analysis of nutrition
and management practices, as well as
owner/worker education. Managing
research (both in controlled and in-field
settings), coordinating required procedures
with real-world application and management
by working directly with owners and
managers of various farms and ranches to
ensure protocols are adhered to as well as to
ensure data collection and interpretation are
accurate. Involved with the data analysis
and technical writing required to publish
research in a variety of peer-reviewed,
professional media, as well as creating
training and educational materials for all
levels of horse owners and those who work

breeds and
disciplines of young growing
horses and developed methods of data
collection that could accommodate the
variety of management requirements while
still maintaining the integrity of data.
Parameters evaluated included: growth
parameters of body weight, feeding rate,
body condition score, hip height, height at
the withers, heart girth, rump fat, soundness
scoring, radiographic analyses of fetlocks,
pasterns, hocks, stifles, and left third
metacarpal to evaluate bone growth and
health, as well as blood analyses of CBC,
serum chemistry, osteocalcin. Spontaneous
activity, weather conditions, and insulin
sensitivity were also evaluated.
2008-2009 Equine Specialist, Land O’Lakes Purina Feed
Oversaw Field Testing and data collection of
geriatric diet at SFASU in
Nacogdoches, TX.
Parameters evaluated included: weight,
body condition score, feeding rate, rump fat
ultrasound, hoof quality and hair coat
quality.
Bloodwork parameters included:
Hematocrit, Hemoglobin, Total Red Blood
Cell count, Serum Total Protein, Serum
Bilirubin, and Serum Urea Nitrogen.

Assisted with protocols associated with
weight control ration development and low
starch formulation development. Using the
MinMod method over 5900 blood samples
were taken to evaluate glycemic responses
to each of the research diets, and the diets
plus exercise.
Additional parameters evaluated included:
body eight, body condition score, feed
intake, urinary and fecal excretion via
equine hygiene harnesses, heart rate
measurements before, during, and after
exercise, and time to recovery.
