Academic project undertaken – Study of properties of composite materials
Increasing needs for different engineering application invite the development of new materials. Utilization of naturally available, eco friendly
materials have gained special importance in today’s world. Composite materials are materials made from two or more constituent
materials with significantly contrasting physical or chemical properties, that when combined, produce a material with characteristics
different from the individual components. In our project work, natural fiber extracted from areca leaf was introduced for the preparation of
areca fiber reinforced epoxy and vinyl ester composites. Epoxy and vinyl esters are polymer matrix which has high strength and high stiffness
with low density matrix. The density, hardness and water absorption capacity of the resultant product in distilled and effect of salt water was
studied for different percentages of fiber reinforcements. The resultant product was found far more superior than the individual parent
products
