DEAR PARENTS AND FRIENDS
LIFE
The Arts rock at St Eugene College!
Our Instrumental Music Program goes
from strength to strength. Come along
next Wednesday, November 19 at
7.00 pm for our Parent Information
Evening in the hall and watch our
bands and ensembles perform for the last time in 2014. This is
an evening for prospective students and their parents as well
as an evening for parents of current bands and ensembles to
enjoy the performance. Meet our five Instrumental Music
teachers and talk to them about how the program works for
your child. Starting time for instruments is dependent on
children’s developmental needs…..
I am a fan of the David Attenborough series” Life”. I find the
photography amazing and have met some of the workers who
film for a whole year to produce the extraordinary five minutes
that we see. I am less keen on the commentary which is a
voice over that takes the years’ work and sometimes makes it
a cute story. A couple of years ago we were in Canada and had
the good fortune to catch up on some of the amazing wildlife;
whales, moose, bears and eagles thrilled us in the natural habitat.
 Keyboard - begin anytime from Yr 1

Strings– begin anytime from Yr 2
 Woodwind and brass instruments – Yr 4
 Drums and Percussion – Yr 4
 Guitar – Yr 4
All the information re costs, commitment, instrument hire/
purchase, practice, bands, etc will be there for you on the night.
Please come along and join the band! Playing an instrument
allows your young maestro to study Music as an Academic
Subject (presently OP) right up to Yr 12.
Following interviews last week, we welcome four new teachers
into the Junior School and Yr 6 next year; Kim Walburn, Joanne
Brignell, Melinda Mullins and Imogen Dominello. We also say
farewell to a number of staff who have put their heart and soul
into this place and now move on to greener pastures!!! Luke
McKenna is taking a year off to pursue his passion for student
leadership and welfare. Michelle Buiatti is seconded to
Brisbane Catholic Education for a year. Angela Porteous will be
Head of Maths at St Joseph’s Toowoomba following her
marriage in December. Paul Cook moves to Head of House at
Iona College. Mat Scott has accepted a transfer to St Kieran’s,
Brighton. Donna Young is with BCE for a 6 month secondment
as a Support Accountant looking after 15 Primary Schools.
Stephen Morton is starting up his own practice as a Clinical
Psychologist.
Greg Hohns goes on Long Service Leave next week, a prequel
to his marriage to the lovely Karen on December 6. Best wishes
and lots of blessings to you both, Greg and Karen.
Next week is the final week for our third
Senior class at the College, a week of
celebration, journey and farewells. On
Monday the theme of journey is explored
through a Noosa National Park walk. On
Tuesday they are reflecting on their time
at the college in Retreat at Sails in Redcliffe. Wednesday and
Thursday are looking at setting these fine young people up for
their future….and Schoolies! Thursday evening is their
Graduation Mass and Dinner and on Friday morning we have
our whole school Graduation and Farewell Assembly. It will be a
week full of cheers and tears!
Blessings

and
I was very keen to see
the salmon run and got
lucky in a little town
called Hope. They had
filmed the Rambo movie
there for its wild Canadian beauty and when
we asked, we were told
that the Salmon were
running and got directions to the tributary
where we could see it. We parked, chased up a remote track
through the bush at dusk and got lucky. I got very excited and
decided that I could be the apex predator and catch salmon
with my bare hands. I did and was very chuffed until the commentators voice interrupted my joy. It was my wife who finally
added the voice of reason to my prancing in triumph holding
the Salmon. “ Do you think that the bears will be grateful for
not getting their paws wet and accept the fish from you without
killing you?“
So we quickly started to retreat in the drizzling rain and darkening gloom nervously jumping at rustles and night noises and
finally stumbled into the car. The bears we had seen the day
before didn’t appear and my confidence as apex predator had
vanished. Often the commentator’s voice is the voice of reason
and sometimes we hear it a little too late. At St Eugene’s, the
teachers often feel like the voice over commentator. We encounter a situation of youthful exuberance or sometimes plain
silliness and we add the voice of reason. The students are still
in the moment and struggle to hear the wisdom that is being
spoken. We actually are trying to avoid the repeat of foolish
actions before something serious happens. I got lucky on that
creek, got smart enough not to repeat the mistake and am
happy to be here to tell the story.
With God’s grace, so will our students.
Have a great week

College News
Dear Year 12 student
As you close in on the end of year, there are a few items of note
with regards to your laptop:
 All laptops need to be returned to the Tech Support Depart-
ment, prior to your final day at the College. This is so they can
be wiped and reimaged back to their original setup. Software
used as part of the College1:1 laptop program is used under
licence, on a yearly agreement, from Microsoft by Brisbane
Catholic Education. Part of this agreement is that the software
is only used on devices that are part of the College pool of
equipment. Any device that is removed from this pool must
have all licensed software removed. This is a legal requirement, and the College has no option but to comply. Failure on
the part of the College to abide by these legal requirements
can result in significant legal repercussions.
 To assist the College in meeting its obligations, we require you
to return your laptop to the Technical Support Department, to
allow us to ensure all student laptops have all licensed software removed. Failure to return your laptop to the College by
the required date could jeopardize the timing of release of your
graduation documentation, and result in a fee being charged
for the cost of the laptop.
 Thus, you will need to return your laptop and power adaptor to
the Tech Support Department as soon as possible. Please
ensure you no longer need your laptop for educational use
during this time, and you have returned it to the Tech Support
Department no later than the morning of Monday 17th November. You will need to ensure that you have a backup of all data
on your laptop, as all information will be removed.
YEAR 3 – 5 SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Last Friday the year 3, 4 and 5 students competed in a swimming carnival at the Morayfield Aquatics Centre. It
was an exciting morning with students
participating in a number of events and
as the carnival continued we had more
students wanting to swim in extra races. It was wonderful to see
their enthusiasm and excitement. There were a number of outstanding performances and I would like to congratulate Poppy
Gatfield, Riley Fiorin, Jayden Spiteri, Lachlan Grace and Carys
Lavia.
The teachers and Year 12 Certificate lll in Sport and Recreation
students worked hard making the carnival a great success.. I
would like to thank them and the parents that came to support
their children.

YEAR 5 WHITE STALL FOR ST VINCENT DE PAUL
To help support St Vincent de Paul in the lead up to Christmas, we
will be running some stalls near the junior tuck shop at first break
this Friday 14th November. This will help to raise money for St
Vincent De Paul and assist in the great work that they do. On Friday we will be selling:




 The College has investigated the possibility of this model of
laptops (e4310) being made available for ‘purchase’, as many
are beyond their service life span. Those students who have
been at the College since 2011 (Year 9) and have been continuously enrolled in the College 1:1 Laptop Program will have
the option to purchase one of the laptops available for a nominal fee.
 Once it has been established that a student is eligible to pur-
chase a used laptop, the fee will need to be paid to the Finance Department, and the receipt can be presented to the
Tech Support Department. A laptop will then be available for
pickup. Please be aware that this laptop will have the original
operating system that was initially installed on the laptop, and
that additional setup will be required. The Tech Support Department will not be able to assist with any further setup. Also
the laptop will be supplied ‘as is’, and does not have any warranty or support entitlements.
Please feel free to visit the Technical Support Department, during
breaks, if you have any further enquiries. List of students eligible
to take part in the laptop purchase agreement will be listed on the
Tech Support notice area by Friday 14th November.
Jelly cups $1.50 each
Lolly cups $1.50
Chips 50c
Cupcakes $2 each
This will be for first break only.

GRADE 8 GLASS HOUSE MOUNTAINS EXCURSION
DUNLEA RESOURCE CENTRE
All library borrowing ceases this week, Friday,
14th November with all resources being returned
the following week by November 22nd.
Born to Read Presentation
On Friday the 31st, year 8’s had the special chance to extend their
knowledge on the Glass House Mountain’s geological features for
SOSE and Science. Our first stop was at the Glass House Mountains Mining Quarry, where we learnt about how the rocks were
broken down, and their purposes. Our school was lucky enough to
have guest speakers that gave us an exclusive tour of the quarry.
These speakers explained what process they went through to produce sediments from ignimbrite (Igneous Rock) and the uses it
provided.
After morning tea, the Grade 8’s then
proceeded to Mount Ngungun, where
we trekked up the mountain to one
of the natural caves that was formed
by weathering. This cave bore many
empty cavities and interesting features that helped us to complete
some of our science booklet for our
upcoming assessment.
This was held last week on the Whole College assembly and presented to baby, Elijah Ian Warnett who is the nephew of students
Sam Halpin (Yr 12 & College captain) and Matthew Halpin (Yr9 ).
All the six Halpin siblings went through and still are going through
our college from prep, with Elijah’s Mum, Suzi graduating in 1999!
The grandparents of Elijah, Mark and Denise Halpin, have always
been stalwart supporters of our college for almost 25 years, putting in extreme effort and time volunteering their services. Little
Elijah was introduced by his Uncles and warmly welcomed by our
school community. He was presented with a library bag, quality
picture book, Moreton Bay flyers and recommended reading baby
list to support his parents nurturing his reading development. Do
we have any more babies from the college community to welcome
either at our assembly or elsewhere? Please inform library staff–
on 3491 4605 or call in to the library at any time.
Bookfair
The Bookfair is open all next week in the library for all our students and families to
browse and purchase some great bargains.
This is a great opportunity for our students to
stock up for the long Christmas holidays.
JANICE CHILCOTT—TEACHER LIBRARIAN
Later, we were invited into the Glass House Mountains Information
Centre to have our lunch inside. Another guest speaker informed
us on the formation of mountains, which were formerly intrusive
volcanic plugs. His interesting talk gave us more opportunities to
explore the mountain. After a hard day of climbing and working,
Grade 8’s were then treated with an afternoon swim to cool down
at Beerwah Pool. This excursion was an exciting experience and it
gave us the chance to learn more for our Term 4 assessments.
